04/26/2010 Entry: "MISC.ALLICA"

ABC News and RIA Novosti reports that not even a volcano stops Metallica. Although using a bus again has Kirk saying "When we boarded the bus again this week and had to travel overnight, I realized that those bad memories are still here. I still haven't overcome the fear of buses. But the show must go on,"

What's Jason Newsted up to? The SF Weekly tells us 'an exhibit of Newsted's (art)work will be on display starting May 4 and running through July 27 at the downtown Micaela Gallery, with a big opening party for the public on Thursday, May 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Yes, the show must go on...

ENOUGH bro. We get it. Why don't you contribute to JD's post of rare gems or something?

Posted by kurt @ 04/26/2010 05:41 PM EST

Carrying on JD's thread from the other...
"...Going to put you somewhere that you can get the help that you need..."
Maybe they can cover some of Rob's previous songs. I think James singing Institutionalized would be awesome. I don't know why else it would come to mind...

I love the Diamondhead covers, and Helpless and The Prince don't get played nearly enough, so those are always welcome.
Minus Human is probably the one that I've most wanted to see/hear, but I don't know if the correct level of oooompphhhh can be achieved without a low brass section.

Posted by Azrael @ 04/26/2010 07:32 PM EST

Institutionalized isn't a "Rob" ST song. That song came out quite a bit before Rob joined the band. I guess that would be akin to covering a Flotsam song... although ST is quite a bit more well known at the time Rob joined the band than Flotsam was when Jason joined.

I actually saw ST with Rob (opened for Queensryche) before I saw Metallica. I think my cousin and I were the only two paying attention to ST. My call would be toss up twixt You Can't Bring Me Down and Lost Again, there's some great (potential) downpicking I'd love to see James tackle.

Posted by JD @ 04/26/2010 10:22 PM EST

....and a good call with -Human.

Posted by JD @ 04/26/2010 10:22 PM EST

I posted on the last thread... My pick is for Fixxxer

Posted by EPDA @ 04/27/2010 11:41 AM EST

Rare gems I'd love to hear live would be more songs from St. Anger like My World, Shoot Me Again and The Unnamed Feeling.

My Friend Of Misery even with Jason out of the band, would be a great song to hear live in it's entirety. One of my personal favorite cover songs by the band is Sabbra Cadabra/National Acrobat mesh, so yeah I'd love to hear that one live.

Of course I'd love to hear Until It Sleeps played live regularily again, another one of my personal favorites.

Metallica equals perseverence.

*********(me) equals perseverence.

You equals perseverence.

When my hate became love, the show
must always go on... peace brothers.

Posted by Acillatem @ 04/27/2010 11:46 AM EST

EPDA, kind of a cop out, there. I know I (if not most folks) consider Fixxxer something a classic.

*********: you're starting to weird me. Relax... chill.

Posted by JD @ 04/27/2010 03:52 PM EST

I'd also love -Human, but I agree with the above post that I don't know if they need the orchestra to give it the power it had on S&M.

I love fixxer, but it has so many effects on it that I don't think it would be pulled off live very well, unless they did as they did with All within my hands and totally reworked an acoustic arrangement.

Just found out when I go to the carnage shows they will be doing Seasons and Rust in their entirety. That ought to be pretty cool, although I'd prefer to get Peace Sells. I have to give mustaine a little credit, he asked for fan suggestions on what song to drop from the setlist in order to add another. I think that's pretty cool.

Posted by kurt @ 04/27/2010 04:18 PM EST

I might be wrong but Escape has never made it to any setlist, ever, right? That would be another nice pick, I remember that being one of my favorites the first time I heard RTL.

Just to keep things alive...what would be your pick for a re-recording?

Posted by EPDA @ 04/27/2010 07:09 PM EST

RE others posts:
The Unnamed Feeling
Fixxer
Human
Escape( obvious, we;ve been talking about this for a while.)
Sound great. I know I said of Wolf and Man, but I also thought of The God That Failed. I know it was played lived before but I think its a heavy kick ass song for them to play now and then. However, I would like them to play Ronnie once. I know it's different, but I do love that song!!

Posted by MONSTER @ 04/27/2010 07:32 PM EST

EPDA, not sure what you mean by a re-reocrding, but it would be interesting to hear AJFA with Rob playing bass. I am used to to the sound and I have no complaints, but I know a lot of people that want to hear BASS.

Posted by MONSTER @ 04/27/2010 07:34 PM EST

House that jack built for sure!

First off the verse riff is just so gruesome..Metallica at their best... The chorus is kinda strange to me..not bad...just strange

But man what an ending...when James is like.. "Open my eyes...it swallows me... is that you there? mm I twist away!!!"

love that!

Posted by Tony @ 04/27/2010 07:40 PM EST

Escape is a funny song. I've played around with an acoustic version of the song for when/if I ever get my band together.

I'd really love to get more DVD surround mixes... especially Load (w/Fixxxer).

Posted by JD @ 04/27/2010 08:17 PM EST

I'll go with:

Escape - doing the disco dance
House Jack Built
Where the Wild Things Are - another bit of a mindfuck but still very cool
My World
Astronomy

Posted by manguy @ 04/27/2010 09:16 PM EST

WTWTA always struck me as a real weak song... I'd love Fixxxer as well but yeah, ain't gonna happen.

I'd be stoked for House Jack Built and Astronomy. And as I mentioned earlier, I reckon Prince Charming could absolutely crush live.. lots of big riffs.

Still, I'd happily swap all the unplayed ones for a short and nasty hour long set of all their fastest songs, or for that matter just cutting sandman and NEM off the set list.

Posted by caspian @ 04/27/2010 11:06 PM EST

Well MONSTER, I got lucky and saw one of the performances of The God That Failed in 2004, and I considered myself lucky to get And Justice For All in 2009. They pulled them off both really well.

I'm pretty sure I've heard James say he hated Escape, so it'll probably never be played.

Re-recorded? Several thoughts:
Before I get started, I'm used to the sound as it is, so I'm not asking for any of this.

KEA: Love the songs, but for the most part they all sound more powerful in the live setting. Obviously it would be a sin to erase Cliff's stuff, so how bout recording it live in the studio like Anthrax did with the Greater(or lesser?) of Two Evils with bush singing all the old Joey songs. Thus KEA would still be there, but we could have a version of them more how they typically sound today.

AJFA: Obviously everyone points to the bass sound. But even re-recorded or mastered, they have said that part of the problem was Jason playing right along with James' rhythm parts. So what would you do? Have Rob create his own basslines so that they can be heard? Or just try to up Jason's stuff in the mix?

SA: The drum sound? No. I am used to it being how it is. But.......add in those little solos that Kirk added to the live versions of Frantic, Sweet Amber and Dirty Window. Edit out the repetitiveness of a couple of the songs AND/OR have James come up with more lyrics to eliminate the repetition. And DROP the retarded killkillkill at the end of All within my hands.

Posted by kurt @ 04/28/2010 09:11 AM EST

Just heard Prince Charming on shuffle and it's a great riffage/rockin' song, I love the lyrics too. Would work really well live. I agree with Caspian on this one.

The God That Failed has heavy riffage, which makes for an awesome live stomper. This song I always liked. Before I became a true fan of the band in 94', my mom's(RIP) boyfriend at that time around 91', 92' played the black

Posted by Acillatem @ 04/28/2010 12:41 PM EST

...Album all time and this song always struck me as interesting and very powerful, both musically and lyrically. I had know idea that years later I would love this band the rest of my human existence.

Posted by Acillatem @ 04/28/2010 12:45 PM EST

I guess my point is that I would like to hear every song live at least once, so I can make a judgement call.

I am sure there would be some surprises, songs that you wouldn't think would come off well, but end up killing.
Who knows?

Posted by manguy @ 04/28/2010 02:04 PM EST

I think kurt is right. Some interview I read years (has it been decades? Geez) ago said that Escape was the only song they had written specifically for the radio, and it didn't turn out great.

Posted by Azrael @ 04/28/2010 03:05 PM EST

I recall that too Azrael. The funny thing about that is it kind of kills the whole "sell out" notion.
Some say they sold out to radio with Enter Sandman, or to Mtv with "One".
Hell, they could say they sold out when they signed a record deal.
Point being they always did things their way, maybe Escape was the one time they maybe comprimised their morals or something.

Posted by manguy @ 04/28/2010 04:11 PM EST

My recollection of that was that after that song James said he would never purposely do that again.

Selling out with TBA? Obviously a much more polished record. But I always ask, what was on rock radio at that time? Nothing as heavy as TBA. I think the heaviest record to be really high up the charts was Appetite for Destruction. And that was a heavy rockNroll record, not metal.

So yes, I do think they purposely polished the sound, but I don't view that as a sellout move.

I've also always wondered this. If metallica "sold out" with TBA, how come the same acusation was not thrown at megadeth for Countdown To Extinction? Same time frame. Same cleaned up sound more or less. But mustaine doesn't hear "sellout" nearly as much. Is it purely because he didn't sell as well and the king of the mountain inevitably gets shots taken at him?

Posted by kurt @ 04/28/2010 04:30 PM EST

We're all sell outs oneway or another... you work for money, do you not? For love or for the love of money... we're all a bunch of fuckin' sell out hypocrites, at some point in our lives. Materialistic pigs too, right?

Who'd do you think you're kidding, not me?

Posted by Acillatem @ 04/28/2010 06:00 PM EST

Kurt, just to clarify, it was not me that was calling TBA a sell out, I am talking about what others have said.
Basically I was making a point that there are cynics out there who can criticize anything, they just have to look for it.

Posted by manguy @ 04/28/2010 09:47 PM EST

Two things:

Re-recording KEA is about as bad an idea as repeating WW2.

Have a listen to Lars talking on the classic album doco on the black album. He was making that album, partly, to sell. TBA is definitely the artistic weak point of the metallica catalogue.

I think you'll find most peopel think Mustaine sold out on CTE. But yeah, Mustaine isn't as popular, and he redeemed himself somewhat with Youthanasia. There's a lot of hate levelled at the next two albums, though.

Posted by caspian @ 04/28/2010 11:47 PM EST

I remember going skiing in SoCal in 92 or so and looking down from the lift and seeing some idiot had scrawled "fuck the new metallica, fuck the new megadeth" in the snow. Apparently not everyone gave CTE a pass at the time. I think it's a great album, tho.

Posted by Azrael @ 04/29/2010 01:57 AM EST

Manguy, I know bro. I was just saying in general.

Caspian, I didn't get that vibe much. But in general, I'd say Lars seems more concerned with that stuff. But he doesn't write the music. He can arrange and tinker all he wants, but it's James' stuff for the most part, and I definitely don't get the vibe from him that he's overly concerned with sales.

However you are definitely right about this: Following the success of the One video, headlining Justice tour and stint on the Monsters of Rock, no matter what they released was gonna be big.

Posted by kurt @ 04/29/2010 12:28 PM EST

Like TBA or not, it was a gateway drug for a lot of people who otherwise would not have found their way to Metallica's back catalogue, as well as other bands in the genre. The fan base that more recent metal bands enjoy is what it is because of TBA. Metal survived and now thrives because of TBA IMO.

I know there's tons of clips of the non-backwards Blackened inro, but I thought this one was cool because it almost seamlessly mends the two versions:

I know everyone has a song they'd like to hear, but you know what I'd like?.. A fuckin' US tour! They could play spoons, and a fucking hambone, but Jesus... I know the Euro is more than the dollar, but c'mon guys! The Fucking Europeans get the "big four" when y'all are American! Yes, I'm frustrated

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 05/02/2010 10:23 PM EST

go and have a fuckin' cry. Living in Australia is far worse for bands, but you don't see me bitching about it.

Posted by caspian @ 05/02/2010 11:36 PM EST

Personally, minus the big4 thing, I say get off the road and into the studio. You don't have to tour for three godamm years for every record.

Posted by kurt @ 05/03/2010 09:00 AM EST

Are all Australians as rude as you Caspian? Bitching is all you do BTW, so please don't say you don't bitch.

Posted by Hmm @ 05/03/2010 11:28 AM EST

Does anyone know if that hetfield book ever came out? I can't find it on barnes and nobles website.

Posted by kurt @ 05/03/2010 05:57 PM EST

Hmm, the ironic thing is that every single post you've done has been a bitch about one of my posts. So please stop failing so hard, and perhaps consider stinking up a different part of the internet.

Posted by caspian @ 05/05/2010 01:30 AM EST

Kurt, and you know what the frustrating thing is.. they will probably wait a year or two before the get into the studio too. I wish it were the 80's and they were cranking out records every 2 years.

Posted by Yukoner @ 05/05/2010 02:26 AM EST

I can understand that it's not the 80's and they are older with families. However, if you are going to tour 1-2 weeks on/1-2 weeks off at a time, along with many breaks of a month or more, then I don't see the need for a full year off after the tour. I can definitely see the year off if they do a two year tour with minimal breaks like the old days. But these days they build the vaca time into the tour.

So when the magnetic tour is done, IDEALLY they would take off3-4 months then get their ass back in the studio. It's not like they do full time studio work either. They've said DM didn't take that much longer to record if you add up the actual studio time, but just like the touring, they spread out the work.

Posted by kurt @ 05/05/2010 09:46 AM EST

Kurt, I agree. Finish the tour, take a few months off, work 6 hour days in the studio and get the record done in another 6 months. By any (other) band's standards this would be a leisurely pace. Oh well.

To be honest, I think if they deliberately set themselves a short time table to record (let's say 3 months) then it could end up being a better record.

Posted by caspian @ 05/05/2010 11:33 PM EST

James has said it before, the bulk of the writing was done. Lars tinkered for around another year. My question is, with three other guys in the band, why not pull in the reins on lars?

Then again, if the change in My Apocolyspe's lyrics came in that last year, it was a good thing(based on the demo).

Anyone see Gary Holt fussing about the Big4 tour should be the Big5? He has never accepted that his band was second rate compared to the big4. He hangs his hat on coming out at the same time.

How bout Anthrax? Now Joey might be back again? Have you ever seen such a clusterfuck? Well, yeah, I guess there is Van Halen.

Posted by kurt @ 05/06/2010 01:45 PM EST

Please, enough with the haikus!!

Posted by MONSTER @ 05/06/2010 04:52 PM EST

Anthrax are a complete joke these days.. They really should just spit up. Also Exodus are great, but the big 5? Really? The big 4 - say what you want about quality of music, etc etc- have had waaaaay more commercial success. It just doesn't add up.

Posted by caspian @ 05/07/2010 02:23 AM EST

Seriously, find somewhere else to stalk. Your shit is just strange.

Kurt,

There is nothing we can say that will get him to cease and desist.
Either we all have to ignore him, or he needs to be summarily banned from the site.

Posted by manguy @ 05/08/2010 02:35 PM EST

I reckon that's his plan on meeting Hetfield. He's going to ascend to fame and fortune via his brilliant (?) poems and stanzas, and then meet him! I expect ********* to have lyric credits on at least half of the next Metallica record.

Posted by caspian @ 05/08/2010 06:46 PM EST

I think there is going to be another banning. *********: e-mail me.

Posted by JD @ 05/09/2010 10:27 AM EST

Joey Belladonna rejoining Anthrax. WTF? They had a great thing with John Bush, Belladonna was always their weak link.

Posted by JD @ 05/10/2010 08:36 AM EST

Yup, just saw the belladona news. I liked Bush's voice better as well, but I think Among and Persistence(along with Sound) are their most consistent, beginning to end, records. My only real gripe would be if this was a part time thing. I heard the Eddie Trunk interview with John Bush and he did state that he did have the desire for full time touring. He wanted to pick his spots. He was specifically talking about Armored Saint, but it seems to have been in regard to Anthrax too.

A problem I have is yet another mistruth from charlie/scott. They are either lying now about making new music with him OR more likely lying a few years ago when they said they tried to make new music with Joey but could just not make it work out. Joey denied they ever really tried at that time, and I tend to beleive him. I do beleive they preferred John for now, but John would not commit. That's their fault for shitting on him 5-6 years ago.

Regardless, stick with this decision and make the most of it. And put out some damn music. Through all this, I think they can still make some good stuff, there was good stuff on WCFYA.

Posted by kurt @ 05/10/2010 09:40 AM EST

For me, Among is by far the strongest album, but probably because that's the one where they found their sound. I remember Scott talking about how it was hard to write for Joey's voice, but with John they always sounded like Armored Sainthrax to me, so it lost something. Sort of like how Van Hagar was a great band, but had a different flavor than original Van Halen.

Posted by Azrael @ 05/10/2010 10:34 AM EST

Yeah, different bands with the different singers. I like bush and belladona, but they clearly wrote a different style of music with Bush. Like you said, same thing with Van Halen. They had plenty of good songs with sammy, but minus the solos it was a different(not to mention much more poppy) band.

Among is their best record IMO, followed by Sound, Persistence, Volume 8 and WCFYA. I'd love to hear the music they made with Dan Nelson, but it'll probably never see the light of day.

Posted by kurt @ 05/10/2010 01:12 PM EST

Sound, really? Also why isn't anyone talking about Turbin?

I'm METAL THRASHING MAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

Posted by caspian @ 05/10/2010 06:11 PM EST

James Hetfield(and Metallica) is one of the few people I truly trust here on Earth, even though I don't know him. I came here and unloaded more than you and I expected. I'm not like you, I open up too much, too often. I'm sorry, I'm in total control of my emotions now and I'm through making things akward here. It's a Metallica site, it's your site and not mine. I'm not real good at making friends here or anywhere, these are my struggles. I'm outta here and/or read only for now on this site of yours. Ban me if you may, I will not post messages anymore and that's a promise... peace, love and respect to all.

Posted by Acillatem @ 05/11/2010 12:03 AM EST

Sooo, I caught Lacuna Coil, Drowning Pool, and Five Finger Death Punch last week at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach. Not quite the Big 4 show, but it was definitely a fun show with a fun crowd. Never really listened to FFDP before, but they had a great following, the show was sold out, and after listening to their stuff, pretty damn good band!

Posted by BoNeZ @ 05/11/2010 12:27 PM EST

I am so glad that Metallica have NOT released a "The Best of __" album. Some musicians release these type of album after just two albums and call it the "BEST". For reall? Can Metallica release the best songs in one CD?

Posted by Bond @ 05/11/2010 04:00 PM EST

Eddie Trunk did a segment on this, and I recommend listening to him and not me, but basically there are two flavors of "Greatest Hits" albums. There's the contractual obligation album, and we know what those look like, frequently a band that's imploding and doesn't want to have to write together or record will release to get the contract out of the way.
The uglier one is where someone else owns the rights to the recordings and can just put them on an album whenever they want to try to make money. The late night infomercial "Hits of the 80's" albums tend to be filled with songs that are like this. A couple of pretty big bands have released a lot of greatest hits albums every other album or so, and those fall into this category, too.

Posted by Azrael @ 05/11/2010 06:03 PM EST

I'd gladly buy a metallica GH package, but am equally glad they haven't made one. Truly, how could they do it? They had one album with "hits". There were singles from the loads, but did any of them chart really well. How would you treat the first four records? Or even DM?

Bands with a few too many hits packages: Kiss, Megadeth, Iron Maiden. Granted, it's not all their doing(probably the least at fault being megadeth with all their contractual issues), but they have something to do with it. Release a rarities thing if it's just to fullfill a contract.

My day started with my front window being busted out at my office. It's only gonna cost me $650.00. Great start to the day.

Listened to the new godsmack last night. Only gave it one spin, but I think 3-4 songs stood out as pretty good(which is about what they average with me since the first record).

Posted by kurt @ 05/12/2010 10:34 AM EST

yeeeeeew

Managed to score standing room tickets for the Metallica show here the 22nd of October. Only managed silver upper tiers for the gig on the 23rd, but still! So utterly stoked, and real glad that I managed to sneak standing room in the public sale (I doubt there's any left now). Will be there early to get a good possie (last time I saw them I was front row) and will most certainly be BANGING MY FUCKIN HEAD.

Just got in froma round of golf and read the Dio passed away this morning after losing his cancer battle.
I cannot express this right now as I am still processing the info and am more or less in shock. While I did know he was struggling, its still always hard to accept.

I am glad as I was able to see him with Heaven and Hell a couple of years ago.

God bless ya man.

A true shame indeed. H&H's first album was amazing, and I was keen to see what they were going to deliver next. Will be playing Mob Rules a fair bit today, I think.

RIP Dio.

On another note, just saw the MetOnTour vid for UIII premier. I know it's old, but Wow, just WOW. Great first performance of a song. I wasn't sure how that would go, but James delivery is just amazing, and the main riff is huge. They need to put that one in the set permanently.

There's an old site design we were about to propose to met.com... and lots of odds and ends. Lots of oddball stuff, some early S&M promo stuff we were working on. Other proposals...

One of the big4 shows will be broadcast at movie theatre's in the US. If that's the case, I'm sure there will be a dvd release of the show.

Posted by KURT @ 05/21/2010 09:23 AM EST

Got tix for the Big 4 thing. It's a Fathom show (those live shows you see previews for before a movie) and is playing at a LOT of theaters in my area, so I can't imagine that there will be a huge attendance per theater. Hope I'm wrong. How a live concert experience will translate on a movie screen is questionable. Depends on how the sound is mixed, I suppose. If it's the feed off of the mics without crowd noise (similar to the live metallica downloads), it could be pretty boring. The feedback with the crowd is pretty important. Also, it starts at 7:30. How much of the show will actually be played? I assume 4 bands x at least 1.5 hour sets (the other 3 wouldn't want to take "opening band status" and only play 30 minutes to an hour) so we're looking at maybe a 6 to 8 hour concert, sitting in a theater.
It'll be unusual to say the least, I just don't want to get my hopes up too much.

According to the write-up on Metallica.Com, "each band's entire set will not be shown, but trust us, you'll see most of the action."

I can't say I have too much interest in this, but that might change as we get closer to it and the Big 4 dates in general.

Anyone know if Jason's sideproject IR8 was ever released digitally or on CD?

Posted by JD @ 05/22/2010 12:22 PM EST

I got a bootleg copy of a couple of those tunes, but I don't think it was ever officially released.

Sad day for rock. Just found out we lost Slipknot bassist Paul Gray.

Lots of rock/metal deaths lately. Bummer.

I got a cd from a band called throwdown. I heard a tune on XM radio that reminded me of pantera. For the most part, I don't really dig bands that remind me exactly of another band, BUT since there is no more pantera I figured I'd give it a go. Listening to the whole disc(well about halfway so far), it pretty much sounds like Pantera mixed with Godsmack. So if you like either or both of those bands, you might want to check this out.

Also listened to the new STP yesterday. It had a couple of good tunes, but their harder/heavier days are definitely long over. Not that they were ever really heavy, but definitely less so now. That said, I liked it better than their last cd by a long shot.

I also picked up LaRaza(after having heard the bootleg) which is pretty good.

This has probably been discussed before but did anyone see the documentary Anvil? My friend just showed me the film over the weekend. That was interesting hearing Slash and Lars talk about the band.

Posted by SRW @ 05/31/2010 04:08 AM EST

I like that little big 4 promo... how weak Megadeth sounds through these speakers. hahaha

Metallica and Anthrax had the thickest sound...

This is a perfect way to get the point across, that maybe Megadeth and Slayer don't suck...you know if you weren't comparing them to anyone, then maybe you'd consider them decent bands.. But you throw Metallica in the mix and come on now, anyone out there still gonna deny that Metallica stomps every other metal band?

WEAK!

I'm very torn on the whole Big 4 Movie Theater gig.

#1 the closest theaters are a 45 minute drive or so.

#2 it's 4 frakking hours in a movie theater

#3 I'm not sure if any of my friends are going as it's on a Tuesday (I'll be on furlough)

#4 it's 4 frakking hours in a movie theater

This is one of those things where I think I'd like to show up for Metallica and any (ahem) extras that may show up. Metallica live in a theater might be just too cool to pass up. I just wish it would be a little easier.

Least favs..

KEA: Militia/Anasthesia
Lightning: Escape/Bellz
Puppets: Thingy/Battery
Justice: frayed/justice

Load: Ronnie/Thorn
Reload: Better than you/slither
Garage: Loverman/Chase

woops, my dumb ass didn't pay attention, those were favorites. here's my least:

kea: jump in the fire/anesthesia
RTL: escape/fade to black
MOP: ummmmmmm......orion?/sanitarium?
AJFA: eye of the beholder/to live is to die
TBA: don't tread/through the never
Load: mama said/hero of the day
reload: better than you/attitude
SA: shoot me again/invisible kid
Garage: astronomy/it's electric
DM: S&R/cyanide

As far as metallica in a movie theatre, I saw Some Kind of Monster at the movies and it was really good(standing ovation at the end). But that is two or so hours, 4 hours? I might wait for the inevitable DVD.

kea:No Remorse/Jump
RTL:Escape,Trapped
MOP: Leper, Thingy (not fair, perfect album, perfect songs)
AJFA: Eye/frayed (again, not fair)
TBA: Tread,Holier
Load: Wasting/Hero (but one of my faves on S&M)
Reload:Wild Things/Better
SA: INVISIBLE KID X 2
Garage: Free Speech/Loverman
DM: S&R/Nightmare (only because I liked the riff the way it was on Shadows/Demo - again, this is an album I listen to start to finish, so don't really dislike any)

My biggest beef with the Big 4 Show in Theatre is that it's in a freakin Theatre! I just can't do it, I have to be there live, but holy man to fly out from the Yukon to Europe plus tickets woulda set me back at least 3 grand! I can only pray they come to Canada or the US. I don't think I can handle just seeing it in a theatre...

My current favorites"
KEA: Metal Militia
RTL: Fight Fire with Fire\
MOP: Damage Inc.
AJFA: Shortest Straw
TBA: The God that Failed
Load: Bleeding Me
Re-Load: Unforgiven 2
SA: Frantic
DM: All Nightmare Long

however, these favorites change constantly, which is great. Metallica, I can listen to them a million times and find new favorites and old favorites and never get tired of it.

Posted by Yukoner @ 06/05/2010 02:16 AM EST

Ohh and I'll throw in my favorite Garage Inc tunes.. Damaged Case, and Mercyful Fate. And for S&M the grossly underrated -Human

Saw the movie, "Get Him to the Greek". Lars makes a couple cameos in it. Pretty funny stuff.

I was in London when Cunning Stunts came out and saw that in the cinema (National Cinema - or something like that) - Lars and Kirk were supposed to be there to introduce it but one of them ended up in hospital on the way from Germany. Dang!

Thats what it was - Kirk got appendicitis literally on the day they were supposed to be there. They had mikes set up at the front of the cinema but then we found out Kirk got sick and was rushed to hospital.

Seeing Cunning Stunts on the big screen with booming cinema speakers was pretty good anyway. Lots of Metallica fans there rocking out.

I've just listened to the last slash cd. OK stuff, but overall kinda boring. The MShadows song and the instrumental with Grohl/McKagan stuck out the most.

I also got the original 2 Quiet Riot cd's. Why? Because I wanted to hear Randy Rhoads stuff. I've only listened to the first one. All I can say is that it's such candy-ish stuff that I couldn't even really pay attention to Randy's playing. I've yet to listen to the second one. Maybe today.

Just an observation, but so far, of all the groups that most of us here are into(more or less), metallica is the only one that I've heard on XM 53, 48 and 42. Most groups are in one, maybe two of these categories, but not all three.

AJFA: To Live is To Die/Frayed Ends, again hard to pick anything
TBA: Don't Tread on Me/Struggle Within
Load: Poor Twisted Me/Thorn Within
ReLoad: Better Than You/Attitude

I posted 2 or 3 months ago saying it would be cool if they did some of the cool shit from Load and Reload live on the current tour. I didn't realize that they played The Memory Remains live on the Mexico City DVD. I stumbled across it on Youtube tonight. Pretty cool.

Posted by Friend of Misery @ 06/10/2010 12:26 AM EST

I still say it would be cool medley if they did a mix of the loads and st.anger.

Posted by kurt @ 06/10/2010 01:40 PM EST

Kurt, I agree with you. A medley of the loads and a st. anger one I think would be cool in the middle of their sets. I'd rather hear the loads medley personally. Hopefully it's something that they think of an incorporate sometime down the line. I just want to hear some news about them recording. Are they messing around writing like they ddi last tour? or are we gonna have to wait two more years by the time theyre done touring to think about the next album.

Posted by MONSTER @ 06/12/2010 11:44 AM EST

If memory serves, they're always recording in the tuning room, and that's where a lot of the riffs come from when it comes time to write. That said, my guess is that without an album owned on the contract, we are in for a very long wait.

Posted by Azrael @ 06/13/2010 09:05 PM EST

I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon there's at least another 3 years before another album comes out.

Posted by caspian @ 06/14/2010 04:30 AM EST

Fellas, we're not seeing a new cd for a couple of years. The only way we hear new stuff is if they release a single song or something since they are out of their record contract now.

I just saw a thing with kirk saying they were gonna finish touring by november and then see what's what. Which means probably a year break again, then back to the studio.

Posted by kurt @ 06/14/2010 09:15 AM EST

Caspian, I agree too. Metallica needs a year off in 2011 then they will start planning for another album sometimes in 2012. And with Metallica's schedule in the studio, I would think that the process of making another album will take anothe year. So espect a new album in 2013. Lets hope everyone who reads this will be there for that album.

Posted by Bond @ 06/14/2010 02:28 PM EST

Johnny why do you even pay attention to Metallica. Go listen to some other band.

Over on blabbermouth is a cool pic of all of the big4 guys(minus jeff hanneman). I tried to post the pic here, but it wouldn't let me.

Posted by kurt @ 06/16/2010 09:20 AM EST

Tonight's the night, BIG 4 in Poland... together again for the first time.

Anthrax and Metallica have jammed together in the past, Metallica has jammed on Slayer's Black Magic a few times... and the Metallica and Megadeth tie is obvious.

I'm not planning on any jam. But, it sure would be cool.

Posted by JD @ 06/16/2010 12:29 PM EST

Of anyone, I can see James getting out there someone else(probably anthrax). He seemed to love doing that with Machine Head. Dave on stage with met or vice versa, that would be gold.

I'm sure a copy of the show that will be in the movies will be availabe on ebay in short order, and I'll be buying it.

Posted by kurt @ 06/16/2010 02:57 PM EST

Honestly, I could see James coming out and doing some Mechanix.

Posted by JD @ 06/16/2010 03:46 PM EST

Honestly, I expect relations between Dave and the boys to be chilly, at best. Kirk specifically has reasons not to like Dave, and Dave is basically expecting Lars and James to give him some sort of acknowledgement that they should apologize to him for the way he was thrown out of the band. Lars has made overtures before, and Dave and Lars have been *friends* a number of times before Lars does something that causes Dave to feel disrespected and go off in a huff for 2 or 3 years. James has remained separate at all times from this whole mess, and seems to have no interest whatsoever in being involved with Dave. He's always seemed uninterested in the drama.

Posted by Azrael @ 06/17/2010 02:53 AM EST

I think Azrael is for the most part correct(particularly regarding Kirk, as Dave has repeated bashed him). However, there's lots of photos up and Dave and James end up pretty close to one another(only little scotty ian between them) with actual body contact. If it was that icy, I'm sure they would have more separated.

I bet once James and Dave actually had a couple of words, especially in the mindset that they both espouse to be in these days, all the bullshit went away and they were cool.

Posted by kurt @ 06/17/2010 02:17 PM EST

Re: the photos kurt spoke of..Is it just me, or is Kerry King looking alot like Rick Rubin these days?...lol All kidding aside, very cool to see Dave,Scott, Kerry, and James together in those photos.

Oh, LoG and Baronness, that's pretty OK. I was afraid they'd bring along someone like Disturbed or something. Not a huge fan of LoG but they aren't hugely awful, been meaning to check out Baronness for some time. Not bad indeed.

Looking forward to pirating the entire big 4 concert.. the megadeth, slayer, metallica order is going to be great. You just know the three of them are going to try to outdo the others. Oh yeah, and I guess Anthrax exist too.

If Bush was singing with Anthrax it wouldve been even more ironically cool. (from the theater)

Posted by JD @ 06/22/2010 09:33 PM EST

Thoughts of the big four...

Joey belladonna sucks. He belongs in 1982, he looks and dresses like an old man.

Megadeth sounded terrible, bad mix or something. Dave's voice is still a weak spot. And memo to Dave: it's ok to smile!

Slayer is Slayer. Kerry and Jeff have little charisma on stage... Tom smiles and enjoys himself.

Metallica sounded perfect... I don't know what James did to his vocal cords, but it was spot on.

The jam, the shots of James and Dave were inspiring. Didn't see anyone from Slayer til I saw Tom at the end. Belladonna tried to steal the spotlight.

Posted by JD @ 06/23/2010 12:24 AM EST

I didnt see the show, but it did sound like James was really pushin for a heavier voice, wanting to man it up in front of the boys, he sounded great!

Posted by Yukoner @ 06/23/2010 01:41 AM EST

Just from what I picked and pried from errant internet vids

Posted by Yukoner @ 06/23/2010 01:42 AM EST

Dave's voice was awful. It's amazing how everyone gives James shit and Dave gets a pass. James sounded pretty good.
Saw Dave and Kirk hugging. That was THE moment of WTF?
Dave L was onstage for all of Am I Evil. Didn't see Tom until the end. Kerry and Jeff were nowhere to be found. Jeff probably has to eat almost all the time to keep up the weight he's at, and Kerry was undoubtedly thinking up quotes for the idiots on Blabbermouth. It was really a downer to see those two douchebags were too cool to be onstage with everyone else. In their potential defense, the riff from Evil might be too hard for them, since it involves rhythm and not just strumming randomly as fast as possible.
I thought having Joey back with Anthrax just felt right. They were really pretty good.
I actually really like to watch Slayer because they are a living caricature of metal, and I get the joke.
Other than Dave's voice, Megadeth was really good.
There will be a DVD. Lars let it slip that this would be "the big 4 dvd." Totally worth it. Caught myself singing and cheering at a lot of places, completely forgetting I wasn't in the venue.

And again: F#*# Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman.

Posted by Azrael @ 06/23/2010 03:13 AM EST

Dave's voice is bad, yes, but his ability to sing live has gone completely out the window. Whenever he went for the high notes it became this weird baby mewling sound. He'd be better off figuring out how to sing in a different register and not try for the high ones. I've always admired Dave's ability to sing despite his limitations, but it was weird hearing him do that. JD may be right about the mix, it's possible he couldn't hear himself. He was actually good on the growling stuff like Sweating Bullets.
Jeff and Kerry not being there for Evil was just a classless dick move. Obviously they could handle the riff, but sitting there going "oh, hey look, everyone is there except Jeff, Kerry, and Tom" and having Tom only come out at the end for the picture was just a reinforcement of the fact that Slayer still wants to hold on to whatever animosity they have towards everyone else.
Interestingly, Slayer seemed to be the only time the people in the theater weren't interested. I'm not sure if that is because they are something that can't translate on a big screen, or if they are just the least accessible of the bands, but I heard one guy talking afterwards about "I went to sleep during Slayer" and another respond "We went and got food during that."

Posted by Azrael @ 06/23/2010 09:55 AM EST

Slayer got a lot of reaction at my theater... the cries of 'Slayer' are always fun, especially at church. Let's face it, Slayer is Dave Lombardo and Tom Araya... they are the glue that holds that band together. King and Hanneman have little stage presence and their guitar attack is very limited. Tom looked like he was having fun up there at times, he smiled way more than Mustaine did... They are Slayer they do what they do.

I sat second row, house right as I got there just as it started. The Megadeth mix was terrible... drums sounded too high, vocals were too high and couldn't hear Mustaine's guitar at all. While Megadeth's other guitar player seemed to hit all the notes, it just seemed robotic and stiff to me... little feeling - but, it also stood out like a sore thumb to me as I could her little of the rhythm guitar.

Anthrax. Sigh... Someone take Belladonna to a barber. He looks terrible, he sounded allright... but severely dated, almost like he'd rather be in a Dio cover band. Odd how Anthrax was the only band that played ONLY songs that were 20+ years old, the rest of the bands played newer stuff. They're trying to live off the big 4 hype and the past rather than getting with it.

As I mentioned, if John Bush was singing for Anthrax and this jam happened... it would've been very cool to see James/Dave and John sharing vocals. James the voice of Metallica, Dave the former guitar player and John the man who would've replaced James.

Posted by JD @ 06/23/2010 12:28 PM EST

Not that "look" or looks matter much to me. But I do agree, Belladona needs, well I don't know what. He still kind of has the permed mullett. You don't have to shorten it, but damn, do something with it. Araya and Mustaine can still pull off their long hair, take a lesson.

I haven't seen it other than the youtube clips of am i evil, but in that belladona sounded pretty bad, and dave not much better. But I kinda chalk it up to just plain preferring James' vocals.

Posted by kurt @ 06/23/2010 01:50 PM EST

Completely off topic, but I listen to the Mexico City CDs from Live Shit a lot. I was listening to Seek and Destroy on disk 2 tonight and realized that there's a strong "Load" sound when they're jammin'. Listen to Hetfield and you'll see what I mean. We're not going to hear anything new for awhile, so it's kind of neat to find shit like that.
