Every song from Death Magnetic has now been played live in concert. The Unforgiven III made its live debut in Oslo, Norway at Telenor Arena. (Thanks to Manguy!)
In other news... the Metallica vinyl re-release continues with Load scheduled for May and Reload slated for June. Both will have both regular and deluxe editions.
surprised by how well this song works, sounds great. intro still sounds like an ad for a charity though.

I'll wait for the livemet version to have an opinion on it.
I got a copy of the new ozzy single and I have to say it's the best I've heard from him since Ozzmosis(underrated IMO) or maybe even No rest for the wicked. No slight on Zakk, but this guy may have given ozzy's sound a nice kick in the ass.
Posted by kurt @ 04/16/2010 01:14 PM EST
BTW, doesn't this make it the first record since justice puppets to have every song played at least once. Justice was close, but they've never done the full version of to live is to die.
Posted by kurt @ 04/16/2010 01:15 PM EST
The intro (as well as the whole song) is a haunting, beautiful and emotional piece of music. I love it, wouldn't have it any other way.
When the livemet version is up, someone please post a link for it. Thanks in advance.
I guess I'll have to check out Ozzy's latest and greatest, apparently.
Metallica's desire to play all songs from Death Magnetic live prove's that they feel this is their best stuff, I would have to agree. St. Anger is still my favorite, for personal reasons, as you already know.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 01:42 PM EST
YOu are right Kurt, they havn't played ALL songs from TBA, the LOADS or St Anger.
Here is the list of MIA songs from the live set (that I know of). Some have been doodled or played in acoustic form, but not the full song
TBA:
Don't Tread On Me My Friend of Misery Struggle Within
Load:
House Jack Built Cure Poor twisted me (acoustic only) Ronnie
Reload:
Better then You Slither Carpe Diem Bad Seed Where the Wild things Are Prince Charming Attitute Fixxer
St Anger:
Some Kind of MOnster (played an abbreviated version) Invisible Kid My World Shoot Me Again Purify All Within my hands (played and abbreviated acoustic version).
Posted by manguy @ 04/16/2010 01:53 PM EST
Out of that list(and I include SKOM and all within as being played, don't recall poor twisted acoustic), I would really like to see the following.
Dont Tread Struggle within Cure Poor Twisted Bad Seed Fixer My World Also, not mentioned, I'd like Minus Human.
I don't think they've ever played escape, and don't care if they do.
Posted by kurt @ 04/16/2010 02:23 PM EST
You know your Metallica, brother. Job well done. Whenever you feel the urge to spew out more Metallica facts, feel free to do so. I appreciate it.

Manguy... I like that kind of stuff, keep up the good work you do.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 02:25 PM EST
I've just collected too many bootlegs, that's all. Plus, recently my sons asked me to make a live cd of each of the records. It was a fun little project.
I have to say of the st. anger stuff, the live versions of dirty window and sweet amber were good and should have been played more. SKOM was bad. I don't know if it was because they edited it down or what, but they screwed it all up the couple of times I heard it.
Posted by kurt @ 04/16/2010 03:35 PM EST
Kurt, you are right about Escape, I was just focusing on the post Justice Albums.
Of course, then again I didn't think of Minus Human. I think I also forgot Thorn Within, that hasn't been played.
If we count Garage Inc. there is another batch there.
I would love to hear Astronomy live.
Posted by manguy @ 04/16/2010 04:08 PM EST
Kurt, you're so right about Dirty Window and Sweet Amber, I especially like the live versions of DW. You're right brother, they could seamlessly fit in a couple of St. Anger tracks on their setlist. From my point of view, it would make sense and it would be very cool.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 04:39 PM EST
Astronomy would be a interesting song to hear live.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 04:41 PM EST
I've never really liked astronomy, but I like Loverman and have never heard anyone else say they like that one. I think James sounded pretty demented in it.
To me the live versions of St. Anger tunes allude to "what could have been". The little solo section in DW, the little mini-solos/tails in frantic. They would have sounded good on the CD.
Posted by kurt @ 04/16/2010 04:58 PM EST
Well, you finally met someone else who loves Loverman, Metallica's version isx superior, but I do enjoy Nick Cave's own style. Hetfield's vocals are amazing on this track, haunting and twisted comes to mind as well as demented. It's kind of a dark song... a story about a bad wolf, if you know what I mean. Men should never harm an angel or an angel's child. In my mind, that's the ultimate sin. I have never heard Metallica play it live, yet.

Alrighty, I'm outta here for the weekend. Be back monday.
Good to see a few conversations liven up in here.

Conversations with one another are true gift, one of the reasons of why we're all here on Earth.
Good and healthy weekend to all...
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 06:17 PM EST
Just had another listen to Metallica's Loverman and wanted to say that this song is the darkest and saddest song ever, period. It's a shame Metallica didn't write this one, they as if they did. It's almost too painful to listen to, maybe this is why they never perform this song live.
When I think about all the angels and children that have been harmed by men who choose the path of the dark/bad wolf... it just about brings tears to my eyes. I wish I could have saved every one of them. A man should never ever cross that line.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 07:37 PM EST
Peace brothers.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 07:38 PM EST
Metallica plays the song Loverman as if they created it, too bad they didn't. It's a dark and sad masterpiece... women and children are to be loved, not harmed.
Catch you all later and make the best of your weekend. All of our days are numbered.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/16/2010 07:46 PM EST
they played Some Kind of Monster (the full version) and I'm pretty sure they've played Better Than You as well. I could be wrong.
A few of those songs I imagine they just don't like anymore (or never really liked in the first place). Fixxxer would be almost impossible to pull off due to the layering. Still, I'll never understand why Jack, Struggle Within (was even a single, ffs) and Prince Charming are never played live. Those songs are up their with the best on their respective albums, and I reckon they'd absolutely crush live.. Struggle is probably my favourite post-AJFA song when I get down to it.
I had the misfortune of hearing DW live the one Metallica I've been at and it was real awful.. glad it's not played these days.
Finally, I have a feeling Hetfield with his avowed "don't care about politics" stance these days is a bit embarrased about Don't Tread on Me's lyrics.. Definitely wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

Question for you brothers.
How does one man save the world?

Since Metallica are in Norway, and the volcanic ashes are throughout the region, does it mean they will be delayed for the next few shows? Or will they travel by bus?

JD, I have been coming to your terrific site for about 5 or 6 years and I now truly appreciate it very much. I just wanted to say thank you for allowing me the time I needed to pour my heart out, you're a true brother and a good man. I just have one more thing I'd like to do here and that's say a few words to James Hetfield. Your site here is my only hope of ever contacting him. I'm not a member of the club, never have been... I'm just a fan of Metallica on my own. All I know is that I am drawn and connected to Hetfeild for whatever reason. I hope you don't think I'm wasting my time here and I should just move on and forget this Hetfield higher power/spiritual connection stuff? You may think it's getting a little silly? I don't think it is, it's who I am. I try to stuff it down and move on, but it's hard when my inner voice says otherwise. You guys may think I'm messed up in the head, I feel I'm unique. My thinking may or may not provide you guys with entertainment. It's who I am, please don't judge me. I'm not a judgemental person, it just pains me to know we are destroying each other and our planet.
Love equals path of destruction no more and I wish all people would get that.
James,
Please know this, I don't want your money, your fame, your status, your worldly things or your life. I don't want to be you. I want nothing from you other than the chance to get to know you, to have a conversation... eye to eye, while we're both still in human form here on Earth. Whenever the time is right for you is okay with me. I'm a happily married heterosexual family man who trusts and loves you wholeheartly. I'm your friend and (10 years younger) brother, whom you've never met and you can trust me. I mean you know harm. I would really love for my family and I (or just myself if you prefer) to meet you and your family someday. I'm not a millionaire, I'm not a famous guy... I have no real musical talents of any kind. I'm a nobody to you. My only hope is that you read this message one day and grant me my wish. I know and understand that you're a very busy man. I don't want to distract or interfere with the good work you do as both a family man and musician. Time is valuable and I understand and respect that. After this message, I will try my best to never bring this up again. I would appreciate meeting you someday very much, more than words can express. Peace and love to you brother.
JD, please don't delete this message or ban me for it. Thanks.

I'd pay 10g's to hang with Lars for a day and pick his brain, but it's not going to happen.
Take the advice that was given already and pay 70 bucks to get into the metclub. I got backstage once and met Newsted. My brother met the whole band including Rob a while back.
Just 2 winters ago when they came to Detroit I got hooked up with backstage access through a connection in Machinehead's tour crew. My brother met him in the bar of the hotel they were both staying at in Los Angeles.
Unfortunately we couldn't link up with the guy until 2 songs into the Metallica set, but he did come through and took our freezing asses from outside and into the backstage door where all the gear comes in and out. Had it worked out a little better, we would have been back there much earlier, with a chance to maybe see or meet someone. It was still pretty great.
What I'm saying is that the opportunity is out there. Move to San Francisco..Join the club...go to more shows.
If you want it that bad..you could be doing more to get it.
At the very least, join metclub.

I saw on blabbermouth about a month back that there was supposed to be a hetfield book coming out this month. Anyone know anything about it?
Better late than never... I just finished joining The Club. Thanks Tony, you gave me the push I needed. You're right brother, it's one step closer to maybe getting a chance to meet James Hetfield.
I had no idea about the book coming out... that's fuckin' fantastic news! An early birthday present is always cool. Even if it is a book. Every now and then I'll pick up a book and actually read it.

What do you think the chances are that James Hetfield would actually get my message and invest time in reading it... possible or impossible?

Well, what other news is there besides touring and when they might write the next album?
Basically we are all just hoping for some rarities in the live set, otherwise its keeping tabs on lastest surfing expeditions and Kirk Hammett energy drink recipes.
Posted by manguy @ 04/20/2010 07:12 PM EST
Monster I wish there was something worth talking about regarding the band. But manguy is right, we just check the setlist to see if anything unusual was in there.
Right about now would be a good time to release shine/holy revolver on itunes.
Posted by kurt @ 04/21/2010 08:38 AM EST
I know there's not much going on with Metallica. I do agree it would be nice to get shine/revolver available to us, but the record company prob has difft plans for it. I didn't mean to just talk about Metallica, but I was getting a little tired of the love fest!! No offense, but I come here to hear some Metal news or anyhing regarding Heavy Metal, Hard Rock or music in general. I was getting bitched at for talking about the NHL playoffs last year. Anyway, regarding Metallica, I think I'm gonna go ahead and get Load and Lightning on vinyl. Times are a little tough, but I know it will be worth it. I just need to get a good record player....my dad threw mine out years ago. Any suggestions?? Went to a record store and they only had ones for $250 - $500....and they were old as hell. Wish I had my brothers from back in the day.
Posted by MONSTER @ 04/22/2010 07:00 PM EST
Interesting point, Monster. Death Magnetic was the last album on the recording contract with Elektra/Warner. Since Shine was recorded for that album, does it belong to the record company, or does the band own it? Given the unique nature of the contract (band pays for recording/production, label pays for distribution/promotion, band gets half of the profits) it's possible that they have more control over than another band would. And is this question a legal issue that is slowing the release of the song? Or does the song just belong to the band and they are holding it back until they figure out whether they want to sell it on iTunes or put it on the next album? Perhaps they are using it as a bargaining chip to create an advantageous contract with Apple for iTunes distribution? This would be similar to the delay tactics they used when negotiating the contract for the black album. I'm sure iTunes would love to have the official exclusive distribution deal with Metallica for their future music. Hmmmm. What's in this pipe? Appears to be special rhetorical question herbs.
My dear wife purchased a copy of the Hetfield book last night for my birthday on my Amazon.ca account. Don't really know how long I have to wait for it, but it will be worth all the time and money. A true investment... I know it's going to be an emotional and honest read and it will most likely bring some tears to my eyes... tug on the ol' heart strings a bit. Can't wait... even though I'd much rather have an eye to eye conversation, this will do for now.
Thanks again James, you have and always will help shape the man I am.
Posted by Acillatem @ 04/23/2010 11:19 AM EST
Azrael, I seem to recall reading about the band's legal battle with Elektra somewhere back in the mid-1990's (just before Load came out) that resulted in a pretty sweet deal for Metallica. Part of this deal was that the band retained control of all their masters (a rarity back then--- not sure how common it is now.) I would think "Shine" would be in the sole control of the band. I really can't see them releasing it while they are still touring. We all know how anal they are with releasing stuff. If they were to release it, they would want to spend a ridiculous amount of time tweaking/remixing/overdubbing. I, like everyone else, would love to hear it ASAP, but I'm not holing my breathe.

To MONSTER, Azrael, and EET FUK: Thank you for the nontherapy, nonlovefest, METALLICA related posts. I know that there's not a lot going on with the band other than touring right now, but I'm tired of certain people using this forum as their therapy session and appreciate you guys getting things back on track.
You know what? I'm happy with my life, and I'm glad that certain other people supposedly are too. In fact, I'm happy to the point that I don't need to plaster it all over a METALLICA web site and keep telling every body on a METALLICA WEBSITE how happy I am.
To those sited at the beginning of this post, thank you for getting the discussion back on track. Even if there's no real news anything's better than the embarrassing, weird crap, that's been dominating this forum for too damn long.
This is a METALLICA website, not "I need to convince anonymous Internet users that I'm happy" website. I'm sure Dr. Phil has a website. Perhaps that would be a better place for some people. Hint hint.

Volcanic Ash Can't Stop Metallica On European Tour

Regarding Shine, unless metallica submitted it for official release, I beleive it is their property. So it can be released at their discretion.
I Hockey land, I think the Bruins will win this first round series, but not much else. The light at the end of the tunnel for them is that supposedly the first two picks in the next draft are "can't miss, NHL ready" prospects. Should they not manage to screw that up(it is the bruins after all), they may have a nice future for the first time since the 80's.

Posted by kurt @ 04/26/2010 01:36 PM EST
I've heard about James supposedly drinking before after shows, sometimes reported non-alcoholic and sometimes regular beer. I'm not sure if this concerns me or not. I myself, have had problems with booze in the past, especially hard alcohol. I love wine, but it gets me sleepy and it can also get me fired up. I can drink beer all day have a buzz but never get crazy. James is a grown man, I'm sure he knows what he is doing. I just hope that whatever it is will not harm him or Metallica in anyway like it almost did in '01-'02.

Kurt, Bruins look solid. I guess we'll see what happens tonight. If they get in the second round, they could be a threat. I'm an East Coast guy and I'd like to see the cup stay in the East, even though my wife is from MI. I did like the Wings b4 I met her, but I think the Bruins are due for another cup.

Ok, in an effort to move away from the "stalker" like comments... let's try something different to spur conversation. Pick one song... a song that's considered unsung or has never got its due and tell us why you feel it's worth noting. Bonus points if it hasn't been played live.
My pick: The House That Jack Built - just heard it in the car and it's mid-tempo stomper for sure. But it's very dark... something that might not always come through. The talk box is hit or miss, but the music could be the soundtrack to some horror flick. It grinds and has an eerie feeling... James' vox might sit a little high, but it's presentation is meaty enough to add to the ambience.
Posted by JD @ 04/26/2010 03:36 PM EST
I have always been partial to Frayed Ends of Sanity. I think the main riff is nasty and catchy as hell. Tempo shifts here and there. Tasty solos. Nice demented topic for the vocals. Plus the Wizard of Oz....."oooheeehoooh", can't go wrong.
I know it's been partially played, but never in it's entirety.
