04/01/2010 Entry: "TO HELL & BACK"
APRIL FOOLS!
"To Hell & Back": is it just name of the tour Metallica will set out on the summer of 2011? Is it just the name? The tour, which is said to rival Pink Floyd's extravagent show for their concept album 'The Wall' is now being described as more than just a stage show.
As expected, the tour will be well documented via HD cameras AND in 3-D(?). "We plan to capture the full Metallica show and make use of all current technologies - this will tbe Avatar of concert films." Mensch added "did I say concert film? It's much more than just a concert film."
When pressed for details, he hinted that guest stars will appear. "Obviously Michael Kamen cannot be there. But, his ideas will be there. What he started will be expanded on."
"We, or Metallica will take you to hell and back."
From Billboard.com.
UPDATE: The General reports that Sirius satellite radio's Liquid Metal reported on this and included that the tour is expected to be preceded by a "interactive DVD" that may include new songs (song titles that were speculated on included 'Shine' and 'Hell and Back' - in a possible concept/storylined release).

Been there before (Hell, that is), too. Been a lone wolf before, too... I'm a papa wolf now. Both my parents are longer in human form, never knew what love was, now I do and it feels truly great to be back. I'm doing now what I was always meant to do, to be the best human I can be, here on earth.
This tour will be the best, period. I love you Metallica and I always will... peace bros.

Wow, don't know what to say about post 1.
But damn, what the hell is this show gonna be? Symphonic? A show based around lyrics? Actors?
I'm all for something totally new, of course the bashers will attack. Fuck em.
I've been flipping through the book by Chris Ingham(metallica: the stories behind the biggest songs). I'm up to about 1/2 way through puppets and I'm not sure this guy knows his ass from his elbow. Some stuff seems more or less right, but some seem off base.

@kurt: Most of the books about Metallica seem waaaaay off base on a few things. Even the one that creditted IS, seemed to just rehash alot of stuff from released Metallica stuff. But, Joel McIver is hands down the worst... the guy's a hack and a half.

I read the McIver book. Easily the worst book I've read on any topic. Not worthy of wiping my ass with. He could have summed it up with, "hey, I'm a thrash fan, and all non-thrash metallica music sucks". For that reason I won't buy that greatest guitarists book.
I went on a barnes and nobles shopping spree the other day and bought the book I already mentioned, along with To Live is to Die, the Ross Halfin metallica photo book, All that Matters, and the complete lyrics book.
To which my wife said: "when I said you read too many star wars books, this isn't what I had in mind". Hey, me likes me music biographies and me star wars novels.

I think All That Matters is the latest... includes a credit to IS. Funny book, I'd read something new then read 100 bits of rehashed info (including quoting the Live Shit book)... just real odd. A very decent attempt.
I just wish I would've had the time earlier to take a stab it.

Manguy, are you serious or are you the one whose trying to be a funny man, now. If not, there's a word called compassion, ever heard of it or are you fresh out of it? I connect with James and his band more than anything else in my whole life and you spit at me for that... where's your heart, bro? I share parts of my life and you try and crush me for that... maybe I deserve it for what I've done in the past. I've been nothing but real and honest these days. Never fear Manguy, I'm a Western Canadian, always have been and I always will be. Would be nice to take my family to California and to meet someone there who's very special to me, someday perhaps.
Caspian, the drugs and alchohol don't fix anything... anger was my drug of choice, it was my crutch. Not anymore, I'm crutch free, these days. I'm bi polar no more... I only play for the good team, now. That's it, enough's enough.
JD, that April Fools news was so good it has to be true... will find out for sure in 2011... fingers crossed.

Aside from the extremely irritating news that Metallica are going to be touring Australia THE EXACT SAME MONTH that I'm going to be holidaying in Scandinavia, I thought this was interesting:
“We’re staying out and doing dates up till November, in Australia and New Zealand is where we’re heading in November and then after that we’re gonna take a little bit of chill time, ’cause it’s been a couple of years on the road, and then after that I think we’re just gonna go back and continue with another record. There’s no particular plans to do anything else.”
So basically at least half of 2011 off, start recording perhaps midway through the year (optimistic), and if we're lucky.. late 2012 release for their next record.

Well, I'm searching/waiting for some new tallica music.
I saw an Anthrax interview(benante/ian) where they said there was "talk" about a dvd of the big four shows. That would be great. They were asked about whether or not the big 4 would do shows in Australia. The reply was more or less that it was metallica's hands. I suppose that would also be true for US shows.

JD, just one more post here and I'm through cluttering up your threads for a long while... I will try my very best.
There's a small but hopeful chance that a close friend of mine from the old days comes to this site and reads the messages. His name is Jeff and I wanted to say a few words to him. He was the one who introduced me to Metallica way back in 1994 when he lent me his copy of the Live Binge & Purge box set... after that I was hooked and madly in love with Metallica to this day.
Jeff, almost everything you ever said and tried to teach me was spot on, I was just too stupid and ignorant to figure it out, back then. You were an amazing friend and human being... best damn friend any dumb shit like myself could hope for. You were more than a friend, you were like the big brother/dad I never had. If I had more balls I would try and track you down and tell you this face to face... I will do this soon. I hope you're still alive brother and doing welI, I have a family now and would like you to meet them, someday. I love you man, I really do. Peace.

I live and breath me and stare back at my own reflection every single day and I can now honestly smile and be proud of the man I see. There's a constant storm in my head that try's to pull me down and drown me, I won't let it... I'm weathering it every day. I'm in calm waters now... love for life, my life and everything in it, keeps me alive.
This search goes on... this search is over, I have found love.

Whoa.
Not tallica related, but I saw on blabbermouth that Rush was going to play Moving Pictures in its' entirety on this upcoming tour. I think I'm going to have to go. I have seen em three times, but not in about 16 years. For me the period of Farewell to Kings through Signals is their best stuff, with Moving Pictures at the top, so I'll be pysched to see this show.
I picked up the slash cd yesterday, but have yet to listen to it other than sampling it in the car quickly.
I also grabbed the scorpions cd, although I don't expect much of it. But I bought into the hype a little. I'll play them both here at work and see how they are.
I get to send out $30,000 today to the US government. Thanks Obama. My accountant assures me it will be much worse in the next two years thanks to "univerasal" health care. Massachusetts already has that(called masshealth), so I will be paying for masshealth and obama's plan, while paying 1,500 for insurance for my family(self employed rate).

People have no godamm idea how bad this universal health care thing will be. I've seen a lot of it. The government will be deciding what services they feel are necessary for you. If you are enrolled, the government will have access to EVERYTHING to do with you: bank accounts, everything. So, if they provide a service that isn't fully covered by the insurance, they can tap into your accounts. Nice, isn't it.
In a year this guy has like quadrupled the deficit, and what is there to show for it? Other than an increase in government jobs, not much. We elected a socialist, if not a communist.

St. Anger is a work of genious and art, just like the rest of Metallica's catalogue.
Hey, just wanted to say how much I still love the album St. Anger, I play it all the time, I can't get enough of it... It's my therapy album. It's a very comforting and soothing masterpiece of music that I can't help but play front to back and/or on shuffle mode whenever I get the chance. It's easily my favorite album of theirs. It's fuckin' great music and I know it helps that I can relate to so much... anyone else feel this way?

Lol @ you guys raving about universal health care. Well, we have it here, and yet despite the HUUUGE DRAIN it puts on us, we have (according to the UN) a higher living standard then you guys, an economy that is somewhere between a million and a billion times healthier then yours.. oh and universal health care. My health care? Costs me a few hundred dollars in tax. It's of a good quality, and accessible to everyone. Oh, the humanity!!!!1
I like America and I like Americans, but your country's take on capitalism (not to mention the farcical and straight out confusing "SOCIALISM AAAARGH" thing you guys have going) is flat out bizarre. Rich get richer, poor get incredibly low minimum wages, no union rights (no set minimum annual leave????) and no healthcare. Sounds like a great place to live, huh. Personally I think Obama needs to be more of a communist.. Hoping America sees sense, ignores Alex Jones and the right in general and votes for the left in droves in '12.

Re: Stanger, not a masterpiece. A flawed catharsis. Riffs are really boring death-by-pentatonic stuff (i.e variants on 0-3-5-6), the vocals aren't too great, songs are unfocused, some are just plain out awful. Has passion, a great production job and has integrity, but the music doesn't deliver for the most part.
I did a really in depth review of it on Metal-archives if anyone's keen on reading it..

Caspian, you're opinions are well thought out and I can respect that. Death Magnetic (and their first five albums) is by far a more superior sounding album, from a musical/technical/creative stand point, I won't argue that. I'm not that stupid. But St. Anger hits home on so many levels for me, from a personal stand point, it is my all time favorite of the band, so far. I just love every moment that was captured on St. Anger... it's a rare piece of musical history. My love for it grows each and every time I get the chance to enjoy it. Maybe it's just me, but I will always think of St. Anger as raw, powerful and emotional masterpiece of therapeutic music. Another great musical gift brought to us by the world's best band.

Ya, but Australia has nothing on the policies and regulations put in place on Canadian banks, which inevitably saved Canada from much of the grief felt in the U.S (even with our colossal cross border trade)
Prime Minister Harper has schooled everyone and has been doing speaking engagements all over the world to demonstrate our model.
Anyways, St. Anger is a hit and miss for me, many memorable moments/riffs, but lacking an overall feel and cohesion.

This is a serious question here, how does a nobody like myself, go about meeting PM Harper in person. Good, strong leaders like PM Harper and James Hetfield who are in the public eye, are the kind of guys I'd really like to invite over for supper some time or vice versa.
Any idea how I could make something even remotely like that ever come true or should I just wake up right now?

Yeah, from Australia. We technically didn't even go into recession, it was great. But we were shielded somewhat because most of our trade is with China, so.
*********, if you want to be completely serious:
You could probably get some face time, maybe 5 minutes, maybe longer, if you were willing to pay a lot of money. Getting the PM to yourself would be super hard because there'd be all sorts of security considerations, and he's probably a busier man then Hetfield. Hell, even if you could afford to put a lot of cash down he'd probably still say no. You might get lucky and if you paid some money to attend a "governor's breakfast" or something like that you'd get a few minutes of face time.
Hetfield, if you really wanted to meet him, pose as a journalist and book an interview. Have fun working overtime for a year so that you can afford that ;)

I met the entire band through metclub, meet and greet pass. That is probably your best chance (obviously means joining the club if you havn't already)
If you are willing to travel, submit and entry to each tour date, to increase your chances of getting one. I only submitted to Ottawa, where I am from, so maybe I got lucky.
I could probably meet Harper through my parish priest. I already met the mayor of Ottawa while doing shots of Chopin vodka in his kitchen, lol.

Yeah, national healthcare will work in a country like Austrailia where the population is only 20 million compared to 300 million in the US. We americans don't want the government taking over our health care decisions nor do we want to pay for it with higher taxes as in Kurt's case.
Australian economy does not come close to the American economy. We are the world's economy. When the American economy is in the tank, the entire globe goes down with us!

The whole world must pull together and rise above this, look to the north as an example. Compassion is required for your fellow brothers and sisters and their families. That's my two cents.
A five minute meet and greet/ass kiss session is not what I am after. I'm looking for a deep rooted friendship that lasts a whole lifetime and then carrys on into the afterlife, with these guys. How is that possible?
Anybody by chance have their personal email addresses? If you do, please shoot me an email if you don't want it known to general public. Wishful thinking here, again.

Listen, I know some things work in other countries that don't work or exist here.
For starters, the problem with things like universal healthcare in the US is that fact that it will be run by the US government. Most of us don't trust them to do it right. The whole economic crash was predicated on corruption and oversights in the government and high level beuraucracy.
Another thing I would like to point out to those who suggest that their healthcare is better. Not to be arrogant, but it is not. The polls that deal with mortality rates and all that good stuff DO NOT take into account murders and accident deaths, which happen at a higher rate in teh US. Take those number out and the US statistics soar.
So yes, we are a bunch or currupt, murderous bastards.
Another point, I read an article showing traditionally poor US cities over the last bunch of years have typically had an overwhelming Democratic leadership. Point being, democrats appeal to the downtrodden, which there are a lot of in the bigger and inner cities. Thus they keep getting elected there. It is a never ending cycle.
I'm sorry about the soapboxing. I RARELY talk politics with anyone. But the tallica news has been slow lately anyways, so at least we are discussing something.
The short clip of the new Ozzy tune sound promising.

Can't believe I'm going to talk about this... Kurt, you may want to actually read what the health care bill does. You're wildly misled -- As are people on the left who think it's going to help anyone. It doesn't seem to do much beyond force everyone to have health insurance, sort of like compulsory auto insurance. Basically a way for the insurance companies to make a lot more money, but you can do the research yourself and see if I'm lying to you. Whoever told you what you're saying is lying to you, for what reason I'm not sure.

Azrael, what specifically are you referring to? You seem to be under the impression I think this is a good thing. I don't think it will be.
Massachusetts has Masshealth, which is basically the same thing but just for our state. Everyone in MA must be insured. However, this has not reduced the cost of private health insurance. In the past several years I have gone from paying 900/month to 1500/month.
Masshealth has NOT lowered insurance rates in MA by virtue of a cheaper alternative. Yet it has increased the wait time to schedule virtually any kind of appointment(other than emergency) exponentially. And this is what I have heard is the case in countries with universal health care. If it is not an emergency, you are waiting a long ass time to see the doctor.
Oh, and by the way, Masshealth has cost billions and this state, financially, is virtually bankrupt. So I am basically imagining that multiplied by all 50 states.

And since I'm ranting, where the fuck has all the money Obama borrowed gone to exactly? Sure, some good stuff. But how bout the million dollars put to some fuckin butterfly(or something, I forget) museum here in Mass?
Gee, that couldn't have gone to the schools, roads, police or fireman, could it?
OBAMA-OneBigAssMistAke.

Kurt, sounds to me all hope is gone in your world... there's always hope, remember that.
Azrael, a chocolate gun seems a little threatening, it might give the wrong impression...funny stuff.

Johnny, if it works here why wouldn't it work in the US? Sure we're a lot smaller, but you guys have more people to share the load so that's a complete non-argument.
Also, I wasn't saying our economy was bigger (as obviously we're a far smaller country) just that it's in infinitely better shape. And you say you're the world's economy? bah! India and china mate, America could disappear off the face of the earth entirely and we'd still be cruising along like nothing ever happened.
The right's attitude to healthcare in America is astounding. Sure, there's more taxes (having been on private for part of my life, there seems to be no increase in waiting times, except for elective surgery) but so what? Don't be a selfish prick and help out your fellow man. It's not going to send you bankrupt, just take a hundred dollars or so off your tax return. Can't believe how easily some of you guys swallow the shit the right is feeding you.

Share the load???? universal healthcare is going to cost tax payers TRILLIONS. I don't want to SHARE MY MONEY, especially money I work hard for. We drive the economy, the proof is there. The US has created jobs in India and China! We are an economic superpower because of capitalism, not socialism! So listen here mate....if i want to hold on to my money, i have that right to because I live in a free society. You on the other hand may like the government having control over your healthcare and your wallet!

BTW, i love how you guys from other countries tell us to open our wallets and read a 2,000 page health care bill!

We should all embark on a process of multi-lateral negotiations, working towards the establishment of a new country. The premise being that the citizens would be comprised of global Metalli-heads.
Policy initiatives that have demonstrated the most value-added to each respective country would be pulled and delivered to the citizens of this newly designed nation.
If this fails to materialize, we could at least consider signing on to a non-agression treaty. ********* would not have a seat at the table but perhaps be invited as an international observer.
And people think metalheads are stupid!

In addition to doing U3, they changed up 12 songs from night one in Oslo to night two. I hope they keep that up, at least in the multiple night spots on the tour.
U3 sounded pretty good. Looking forward to seeing the MoT clip, assuming we get one.

I'd really like to see the political commentary quiet down a bit. But... I do feel the need to share my 2 cents.
Caspian, it's easy to look over here from across the ocean and miss some of the big picture. I already see ALOT of my hard earned money taken out of my pay in the form of taxes. This country is getting further and further into debt..
There was an letter in a newspaper where a reired Navy man wrote in objecting to the statement that Obama and Congress was spending money like a drunken sailor. "As a former drunken sailor" he said, "I quit when I ran out of money."
A lot of people will liken this move to socialism. They can debate that all they want. I just know I already pay too much in taxes, and I don't see this new health care program as well thought out or well implemented. In the recession we're in, it's definitely not the right time to introduce this type of burden to the tax payers that actually pay their taxes.

OK, it's pretty easy to type in "Health Care Bill Summary" and come up with an explanation of what it does without having to read the entire bill. My interpretation of what I've read is that it changes the rules for how insurance companies restrict access to health care, specifically around pre-existing conditions and total lifetime coverage amounts. It also forces everyone to get health care and changes tax amounts on people making over $200,000 per year and employers to help people who can't afford health care to pay for the coverage they are being forced to have.
My prediction (based on what happened when auto insurance became compulsory) is that the insurance companies will make immense amounts of money and find loopholes to allow them to ignore the new rules.
My point is that by understanding what the bill really does instead of what FOX or MSNBC claim it does, we can start having a real conversation. People who are misinformed are easy to argue with or dismiss, so my suggestion was to learn what the bill really does. Not much good, and probably a whole lot that is bad, ultimately.
This isn't socialized medicine, it's just a way to funnel money to health insurance companies. It's not a conservative vs. liberal thing, it's a corruption thing. And the corruption exists on both sides and we should be fighting it on both sides. But instead we have mental patients organizing protests and shouting slogans at each other about philosophical ideas that don't matter when the system is rigged. And that is why I'll shrug my shoulders, go put my headphones on, turn it up, get some popcorn, and watch the whole system tear itself apart and burn to the ground. At least the soundtrack will be good.

Any program that is controlled by the governement is socialized and costs citizens money - welfare, unemployment, social security, medicade and now health care. Did you read all the loopholes and kickbacks in that "summary"?

An over abundance of greedy, negative, corrupt and self centered people won't stop me from being a positive influence on society and it shouldn't stop you.
Where did all the GOOD people go?
I'm right here, like a stone.

the government has control over my wallet? Not quite sure how paying a bit of extra tax translates into that, but if you want to go way over the top, then be my guest.
Capitalism was great (..so was the barter system back in the day, so was the monarchy etc.) but it's done its' dash.
Look up the UN development index and various other things like that; the most prosperous countries these days generally have a degree of government control. Northern Europe, Canada, Aus.. all varying degrees of socialism.
I find it ironic that the idea of the government controlling stuff is seen as dastardly and evil, yet letting corporations (who's only goal is profit for shareholders) control real vital stuff like water, healthcare, etc. is somehow seen as acceptable.

Well caspian, in short, it's because many of us here in the US beleive the government is already controlled by big business. All the politicians are in somebody's back pocket.
To me, voting isn't for a candidate, but rather whatever that candidate is supported by(insurance, pharmaceuticals, energy resources, etc). Problem is, most of us don't know what the ties are until after the fact.

You may have some valid points, but so what? As far as I can tell, your country's leader is a good man, but not a perfect man. Who is? We're all human? I think he's doing his best. Trust him with your tax dollars to do the right thing. I would. What more can I say?

Obviously you don't know shit about our president to call him a good man. He's a racist bastard and I would love to ship him to one of you guys. He would be perfect for Canada, Austrailia, and Europe.

Well. I think he is a sneaky, lying bastard. But most of our politicians are, and so are many of them in other countries. Power corrupts people. I'm sure there are many guys who got into politics with the best of intentions, who ended up as part of the corruption with the best of them.
A friend of mine from grade school went on to become a lawyer. One day he tells me he landed some selectman position paying something like 30-35K per year. For this money, he had to go to a two-four hour meeting two times a month. That was it, maximum of 8 hours a month for that cash. So of course he took it. It barely impinged on his day to day work. And he said there were like 10 of them in this county alone. Wasted cash. He's a friend of mine, and I told him I thought that was dirty shit, and admitted I would take it too.
