03/15/2010 Entry: "METALLICA'S "THE WALL"?"

From Classic Rock Magazine:

Metallica manager Peter Mensch has revealed the band have some major plans for 2011.

“Let’s just say that next year you will see a Metallica tour that will blow your mind. They will only play in 10 cities but it will be a huge undertaking. It will be Metallica’s equivalent of The Wall.”

This revelation came up when Classic Rock scribe Peter Makowski interviewed Mensch for a feature about the most powerful men in rock and asked him to define his role as a manager.

Mensch replied: “Coming up with ideas so that the lives shows are interesting. Just shooting off dumb ideas and, by the way, between you and me, some of it is recycling stuff that people did 25 years ago but no one’s smart enough to know that we recycled it.

“Saying something like: ‘I have this idea for us to play an equivalent of The Wall. So here’s some ideas so we can get the professionals in to they can tell me if I’m crazy or not.’ It’s like plotting out a canvas so someone else can fill it in.”

Hmm… so this could be a new version of an old idea? Metallica’s Wall? Any more clues?

Well, this could be a red herring but Mensch was insistent that Makowski checked out American opera singer Renée Fleming on YouTube. Apart from being a highly respected soprano Fleming also appeared on the soundtrack of The Lord Of The Rings singing in the imagined language of Sindarin.

2011 is also the 20th Anniversary of the release of Black Album... coincidence?

20 years....damn where have the years gone? The Black Album was the sound track to my high school years.

This "concert to rival the Wall" bit of info has me seriously excited. The bit with opera singer has me intrigued as well... I'm imagining full symphony and more... massive video screens, an all day show with the rest of the 'big 4'...

With both the Black album and Master celebrating milestone anniversary's next year... hmmm. The imagination is running wild.

Sounds intriguing. Might be taking a trip to Sydney? Hopefully they do throw us eastern hemisphere people a bone and play one relatively nearby. And hopefully the tickets don't sell out in 30 seconds :D

Don't really want a symphony playing with them. Maybe some new and hugely ambitious songs? Hopefully at the very least there'll be a DVD. If it's only a 10 city tour the production values must be amazing...

Posted by caspian @ 03/16/2010 01:47 AM EST

Let's see... 10 cities...
Prague, London, Paris, Helsinki, Barcelona, Milan, Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm... They never said it would be outside of Europe. We can hope, but I won't be surprised.

Posted by Azrael @ 03/16/2010 02:05 PM EST

Would be very surprised if there's not at least one US show.

Still, your theory has merit; if it's a real massive deal then they wouldn't want to cart it all over the world.

Hoping for new songs!!11

This is fantastic news, it's just the kind of news I'm been waiting for...anybody out there know how I can contact James Hetfield personally, I have something I would to tell him...peace bros.

I'm not some crazy obsessed fan... it's just that I feel I have this strong connection to him, we have a lot of similarities... this is for real. Him and his music have helped keep me alive. He's a great human being and I love him to the core. I need to meet him someday, someway, somehow and figure out what all this means.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/20/2010 12:49 AM EST

Unless it's the "Big Four" here on our turf, who cares.... That said, Avalanche, and Nuggets son!

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 03/20/2010 01:49 AM EST

contacting Hetfield would take a huge amount of time and money.

This is getting weird...with the love to the core stuff..

Sorry I have been awol lately. I am new proud father of a one week old girl.
Next generation Tallica fan!

Posted by manguy @ 03/20/2010 10:42 AM EST

Congrats manguy!! God Bless!! This Metallica news sounds cool, I'm sure we will get some trippy/heavy stuff. If they just play Europe, I'm sure we will get a DVD. I hope they come to NY like S&M cuz I was there and it was the most memorable concert I've ever seen. This sounds promising and I'd love to hear some new epic material. GH97, NJ Devils all the way!!!! (not a Bball fan.)

Posted by MONSTER @ 03/20/2010 04:26 PM EST

Hey Manguy, that's great news! I'm a married man with children of my own and I love them all to the core. My wife and kids are the best things that have ever happened to me and I will never take them for granted in this life or the next... I will never give up hope of meeting Mr. Hetfield someday... peace bros.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/21/2010 04:33 PM EST

Call me what you want, but I strongly feel I have some kind of spiritual connection from a higher power with James Hetfield, sounds crazy, but it's true. I had some kind of awakening you could say. His lyrics really do speak to me... in fact the "The Day That Never Comes" is me in a nutshell. I was meant to be a Metallica fan. So if anyone out there knows of a way that him and I could ever meet face to face, I would appreciate your help a great deal, it would make my world. I have nothing but love and respect for the man. I just find I can relate to him so much and it would be sad if I wasn't to meet him here on earth... peace bros.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/21/2010 10:41 PM EST

Well, I can second the whole idea of James lyrics really hitting home with me in many ways. As far as meeting him though, unless I win a meet and greet pass I'm certain it will never happen. Even if i saw him in public somewhere, I don't like pestering people. I was in vacation in Turcs and Caicos last summer and saw the coach and a player from the new york giants, two NBA players and a new england patriot. I didn't bother with them though, other than to point them out to my sons. Hey, they were on vaca too, y'know.

If I did get a meet and greet, I don't think I'd want an autograph. A picture and a handshake would do, and I'd let him know how much his music has meant to me. That would be it.

Posted by kurt @ 03/22/2010 08:42 AM EST

If I saw any of them on the street I may do a quick "METALLICAAAA" sort of thing. I dunno. I imagine if you're polite and quick with the whole thing they probably don't mind a few words and a handshake. "Hey, your music means a lot to me, thanks for making it", shake their hand, move on. That's not really pestering.

Posted by caspian @ 03/22/2010 11:08 AM EST

It's really too bad that the one person whose had the most impact on my life has to be a famous guy, so the chances of ever meeting him are next to impossible... kinda sucks.

Despite my troubled past with people, friends and women I had loved and my painful upbringing, I love my life now more than I ever have before and a lot of that is thanks to James Hetfield. I really do care about him, he's important to me. My whole life had been pain and suffering... him and his music helped give me the strength and courage I needed to battle my own demons. So if your reading this James, thank you for being the man I look up to and sharing your god given gift with the world. If we don't meet in this life, I guess it wasn't meant to be, here's hoping we meet in the afterlife... peace bros.

*********, you're starting to sound scary... creepy stalkerish, even. Please choose your words a little more carefully.

Posted by JD @ 03/23/2010 08:13 AM EST

Are you sure that's always him? He's said some off the wall stuff before, but this seems different.

Posted by kurt @ 03/23/2010 03:53 PM EST

It's always been me... currently I've been going this awakening in my life(what we do in this life determines what happens next when we're dead kinda stuff), sorta just ended up spilling my guts out to you guys... sorry if any of you were put off by this. It felt good to get it out of my system, though. Hopefully we're all still friends... and trust me, I'm not a stalker or anything close to that, I just have a lot of emotion inside.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/23/2010 11:37 PM EST

I was also thinking like a child attaching an E-mail address in hopes someone out there would magically grant me permission to meet Hetfield someday... my head was really in clouds about that, like that would ever happen. What an embarrassing idiot I can be sometimes... peace bros.

meth is bad, *********. say no to drugs.

Posted by caspian @ 03/24/2010 08:09 AM EST

Contrary to the way I think, I'm 100 percent alchohol and drug free. I'm a totally sane and happy person.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/24/2010 04:56 PM EST

This is his new troll angle. He had a number of different ones he tried out last year. Smile and wave boys, smile and wave...

Posted by Azrael @ 03/24/2010 06:19 PM EST

Let's not live the past...I've turned a new leaf.

This is the real me.

I promise you, I swear... this is the real deal me... I lie to you not.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/24/2010 09:39 PM EST

This is getting weird.

Been listening to a lot of anthrax and slayer lately. Heard some of the new Armored Saint too, pretty good. I like John Bush's vocals. Hope things work out in anthrax.

Do you think Anthrax can actually get it's shit together prior to the big 4 shows?

I'm itching for something new from the boys. James said revolver(or shine?) would see the light of day. How bout an Itunes release?

Posted by kurt @ 03/25/2010 10:51 AM EST

Scored a copy of the Black album on white vinyl thru the MetClub... Death Magnetic sold out before I had a shot. Damn.

Posted by JD @ 03/25/2010 04:07 PM EST

Sounds like you got yourself a piece of Metallica gold JD, I'm not much of a hardcore collector, just their albums and some concert DVD's I own.

Kurt, I second the iTunes release, can never have too many Metallica songs, Shine or whatever it's called, sounds like it's going to be another treasure for our ears.

Hey, sorry if I ever insulted/pissed any of you off in the past... I'm a changed man.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/26/2010 03:01 PM EST

Dude, we have heard the apologies many times before, only to return to the same bizarrio world.

Probably going to take some time before most people here truly believe that.

Peace.

Posted by manguy @ 03/26/2010 04:28 PM EST

The dark cloud has finally been lifted in my life... I can't save the world, but I can save my world and I have. Thank you Metallica for the inspiration I needed... peace and a good and healthy weekend to you all.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/26/2010 05:00 PM EST

just stop posting all the fucking time!!! aaaargh. Continually going "I'm a changed man guys" is nothing but annoying. When you actually have something to say, say it. Otherwise, don't say anything. It's that simple.

Posted by caspian @ 03/27/2010 08:34 AM EST

And you added a ton to the conversation with that comment caspian. Pot calling the kettle black all the time for you isn't it?

Posted by Hmm @ 03/28/2010 01:36 PM EST

Who the hell is Hmm? *********'s second IP address?
Time to shut these guys down.

Posted by manguy @ 03/28/2010 09:12 PM EST

Caspian, you're right again as usual. That being said, it's never too late to flush out all the anger and fear which lies within... this is how I was able to fully become a devoted family man.

Manguy, Hmm is not me, it's someone else. I thought we were friends bro.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/28/2010 10:11 PM EST

not at all, hmm (AKA *********). Learn to use your cliches properly.

Posted by caspian @ 03/29/2010 09:32 AM EST

Believe me or not, it's your choice and it's your life... I just hope we're all friends here... peace bros.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/29/2010 01:17 PM EST

Bros, I used to have trust issues too, that's a thing of the past now... so don't feel too bad about it, just try and rise above it.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/29/2010 01:50 PM EST

I thought this was a Metallica site and board? What's with all the life revelations?? If you're happy and changed, God bless....but can we talk about something Metallica or metal related?

Posted by MONSTER @ 03/29/2010 03:50 PM EST

No shit, I second that thought.

So what can the whole concept be about with this "The Wall" type production? They don't really have a concept type album. TBA anniversary or something?

I'm wondering if there will be any Big4 US dates. I'll be seeing the re-scheduled American Carnage(in july or august), so that will take care of Megadeth(I've seen slayer on the ozzfest). Then I will have just not seen anthrax.

Speaking of megadeth, anyone see some of Dave's little nutty's lately? The PA thing in Baltimore and the thing with the fans that jumped up on stage the other night? Controversy just clings to him like static.

I think these long tours and many breaks has diminished much of the positive momentum the band got from death magnetic. They need to put something out. Single, DVD, anything. Maybe even make more metunes as downloads for guitar hero.

Posted by kurt @ 03/29/2010 05:51 PM EST

Soooooooooooo......is anyone terribly vexed by this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBmM79YadYM

Posted by Dave @ 03/29/2010 07:42 PM EST

That was nutty. The jazz version spliced with the actual lyrics? It's pretty amazing how the same song can be played in such a different way.

Posted by kurt @ 03/30/2010 01:25 PM EST

That was quite a long derailment... anyhow back to Metallica.

The band formed back in 1981, the year 2011 marks 30 years of Metallica... this is a huge deal.

Can't wait to see how they plan on celebrating this thing called Metallica.

Posted by Acillatem @ 03/30/2010 01:30 PM EST

OK, the Jazz version is just brilliant. Wouldn't listen to it for enjoyment, but amazingly well done.

LOG Set to Fail jazz version is pretty good, too. Radio Disney version of Wait and Bleed makes me cry.

Posted by Azrael @ 03/30/2010 04:24 PM EST

Just had a chance to view it and for a non jazz fan, it was very well done and enjoyable. The vocals were spliced in seamlessly, I thought. Kudos.

Caspian, I'm not *********. I also am not a friend of his. Just a MetallicA fan watching you cyber-bully someone who shares different beliefs than your own.

That jazz Enter Sandman was friggin great BTW, totally made my day!

Posted by Hmm @ 03/31/2010 05:58 PM EST

I got a kick outta that Sandman jazz vid. It was done very well, and I wouldn't mind listening to it now and then. At least it's something Metallica related. BTW, I remembered that we were supposed to get a video game like twisted metal with all metallica songs......is anyone else bummed about them scrapping the idea?? While it wasn't original, I would have loved to play it knowing that i'm in a car shooting/blowing stuff up while having 'tallica in the background. Maybe they should reconsider the idea with their 30th anniversary coming up.....?

Posted by MONSTER @ 03/31/2010 06:18 PM EST

That jazz Enter Sandman thing totally reminded me of Steely Dan. That was pretty cool.

Posted by Trace @ 04/01/2010 02:45 AM EST

when you read *********'s posts, do you think about john lennon being shot? no, just me?, ok.
