It is the only song off of DM they have not played live (perhaps due to the piano intro - which could be brought in via a tape). I like U3 a lot and hope we see a video or "short film" (what they called The Day That Never Comes) for it. I like the extended vid for the 1st Unforgiven. What I find a little strange is that The Unforgiven 2 and Low Mans Lyric are on the same album. Low Mans Lyric has tons of "please forgive me" parts in it. It's is really hard to not respond to douchebag remarks like that. This is a great opportunity for them to pull it out live. As far as the piano's, they are using taped intros to a lot of their songs now, so what's the difference. Speaking of taped stuff, my cousin george is in a local band, and a tech at a lot of the local gigs. He was telling me this weekend how many bands that play to that click-track thing live. He said metallica(and godsmack) definitely does not, but lots of other well known bands do. So if they miss a cue the song will be fucked up big time. I never realized all that stuff. For what it's worth I completely agree with what he's saying about UIII; while I enjoy Metallica's return to thrash (certainly they've found the fire again in terms of playing live) there's some songs on Death Magnetic that are definitely a bit contrived, a bit forced. JD, always the sign of a classic and enduring album when it constantly grows on you. Especially tunes that you didn't dig at all at first, then they become your favorites in the long run. I have picked out things I didn't grasp at first with certain songs and know its like "I understand them" more. Agreed, manguy... sadly, there are at least two songs on the album that don't work for me: My Apocalypse and End of the Line. Some amazing songs: BBS, ANL, U3 and S&R... heck, even JK. TWJYL has grown on me quite a bit, too... and Cyanide has it's moments. That said, I think most of the guitar solo's are weak... James' solo on S&R is the best on the album (IMO). James' vocals are top notch, but the album suffers a bit with the lack of harmony vocals (this stuck out like a sore thumb on the first listens of the album, but I really don't notice it as much now). Well, I don't agree with the "forced" or "contrived" thing at all. Could this not just be exactly the record they felt like making right now? I'm kind of bored to death with conspiracy theories. And yet, if this was contrived, it doesn't take one bit of pleasure away from it for me. Is it contrived to go in a new direction? stay in the same mold? or return to an old direction? The answer can be yes or no in any of those examples. And I would guess no one is in James' head to answer that. I think My Apocolypse was fantastic, yet have frequently seen negative opinions of it. JD, I do agree that I was not blown away by the solos. The presence of solos was great and they were OK, but Kirk didn't do anything totally outstanding with them. But James solo in S&R had more soul than any of the others. I'm sure many of you have heard some of the demos over the years that had James soloing on it. I don't know why he doesn't do it more. No conspiracy theory from me... not gonna try that. It's just my opinion... the song rings a bit hollow for me. Just like some songs might on other albums (Escape, Tread, Struggle, Thorn Within... once upon a time a song like Leper would've been included in that list). There are some good bits of soloing... but, yeah... James' piece stands out for me. Frankly, it seemed like Kirk relied a little too mich on improvising too much, and well... that wah. James has really grown as a guitar player, his leads are getting tastier and seem more thought out. (Let's not forget that the very lead heavy songs of Whiskey and Ecstacy of Gold are mostly James). When I have discussions with my buddies about the great guitar players, inevitably Metallica enters into the debate. For obvious reasons. However, lately I have found that James is getting more kudos. Perhaps, it has to do with the fact that we, as fans and fellow guitar players, are also maturing and realizing that good skills at guitar encompass much more then just blazing speed. James has great composition and feel. Not saying Kirk no longer does, but no where near what it used to be. I find he improvises a little too much, to the point where there is zero structure. I have to agree with the improvising on Kirk's solos. I think that is how he should lay down the basics of the solo, but then go and refine the thing. It shows on this record, and live. I still have no problem with my apocolypse, I agree with the escape comment though. One instance that I think they forced the issue was with st. anger. It was forced to not have any solos present, as a couple of live versions showed solos could fit into those songs. And then the song length. They looped the same shit over on a couple of the songs just for the sake of a longer song. I felt that was a mistake. The live cd's from mexico sound good. My only problem with Unforgiven III is I feel the production for J.H's vocals are too raw sounding/unfinished/under produced(most of the vocals on the album is this way for me). I love the intro as opposed to using the horns again. Rick Rubin does not know what J.H's vocals should sound like on a Metallica record...he should of given Bob Rock a phone call first for pointers on how to properly produce a Metallica record. Death Magnetic is the very first album for Metallica where there is no mention/credit of production duties, this bothers me big time(I am trying to get over it. Time heals everything, right?). Metallica made a big mistake giving 100% of the production duties over to Rick Rubin. Next album (if there is a next one), I hope Metallica does not give the producer(Rick Rubin most likely) total control again. With all that control/worshipping Metallica gave Rick Rubin, he practically wrote the whole damn album. Had Rick Rubin followed/recaptured Bob Rock's production wizardry on the Garage Inc. album, Death Magnetic may have become the greatest Metallica record ever. Kind of like Escape gets a bad rep because it's a mediocre song in the middle of a great album. Cyanide probably would have been better received if it was just another song on the album instead of the one they chose to debut first. But neither of those "weakest songs on the album" is a bad song like "Invisible Kid." I know that's a logical fallacy like "Budweiser is ok because it's not as bad as Coors Light" but I don't skip over Cyanide in the playlist, whereas I cannot listen to Invisible. I do think Cyanide loses some steam because it was the debut song. It's got a great hook... But might have the best example of a bad solo. Still not a bad tune at all... And it's not a skipper (ala Apocalypse or say... Prince Charming). S&R is pure classic to me. The biggest downfall if that tune to me is that it seems too short... I like Azrael's point about EOTL being his fav, while JD doesn't like it. Hearing various opinions, most people have a different favorite off the record. I don't dislike any of the DM songs. A couple of minor things that I can do without: hearing suicide to much on Cyanide. Granted, it's the chorus and I'm not squeemish(sp?), but it rubs me wrong. Otherwise I like the song, even though it is more simple than the rest of the songs. I like S&R, but I feel the first half drags a little too long and I too expected another section of the song to flare off in another direction. I like all of mets instrumentals(don't really listen to anethesia though), but I'm not really an instrumental kind of guy, so I'd rather have all songs with lyrics in it. Driving home last night I realized what I thought of Kirk's DM solos. They reminded me of slayer. NOT in style at all, but in the way that all of slayer's solos seem totally unstructured. These solos were like that, whereas RTL-TBA were well structured( I don't really count KEA since they were based off of Dave's work). Still, I'll take what was there over no solos at all. Do you think Allicatem realized RR is probably the most "hands off" producers out there? Or if he saw any interviews where the band said they had him listen and his input was either good song, bad song or you can do better? Yeah I shouldn't respond to him, but sometimes you just have to. Just got back from the show in Aneheim California. Probably the best show I have ever seen out of Metallica. Highlight of the night was Fade to black. James actually used an acoustic guitar for most of the song. Also gotta hear shortest straw, and trapped under ice. That was pretty cool. Only bad thing about the show was this chick standing behind me who was screaming like she was being raped or murdered. The thing is that while I'm sure most people (with working ears) would agree with you that the production is shit, your overall points are terrible. James and Lars at the very least would've had a big say in the final sound of the record- that's obvious. And Rubin helping out (or guiding, whatever) with the songwriting? No chance- I think maybe that subtle little e-bow in TDTNC was Rubin's doing, but anything else? Yuppers... world's of differece between opinion and fact. I can judge things (especially art - in its many forms) by my personal taste. Regardless, to me, Metallica's worst is still better than 90% of the rest's best. Just because I don't think My Apocalypse is as good as Master or BBS, doesn't mean that it has zero worth to me... it's just (again IMO) the band sets its bar so high, when a song or two doesn't quite reach that bar, it's a lot more noticeable to me. ...and just to add a few more cents. I like Escape a bit better than Apocalypse, or End of the Line, or Struggle, or Attitude... etc. My least favorite Met tune is easily Cure... which ironically is on the album that I would reccomend to a first time listener. I've been following this forum for years and have never posted anything on this forum before. But I've been following this thread and was knocking back a few and got the urge to listen to some of the stuff that I like off of Load and Reload. When it comes to the debate about production, song quality, Kirk's solos, and lack of metal during the Load/Reload era, why doesn't anyone mention Devil's Dance? That's a classic metal song with a very dirty, yet unique and innovative solo. I'm just surprised that no one mentions Devil's Dance in a discussion about which songs are weaker and which are stronger. I think it's a classic metal song that, stylistically speaking (I know it's not a cover), could be the sixth track on the original Garage Days. To me it has the same feel as those songs. On another note, I would really like to hear some Load/Reload songs on the current tour. Yeah, when I first hear Load it was a shock as far as the direction they took. I don't like every song on that album, but there's some good shit that they never play: Until it Sleeps, Bleeding Me, Wasting My Hate, Outlaw Torn. I have always had a liking for many songs of Reload that have never been given any attention from Metallica in terms of live play. Carpe Diem Fixxer Wild Things Prince Charming. I never try to compare these tunes to the classics, I take them for what there are. They almost have a small, intimate live setting feel to them. Would be cool to here them. I love a lot of the feel that ReLoad has... it's almost like classic rock meets thrash vibe at times. Carpe Diem Baby and Fixxxer are amongst my faves... and I love Wild Things to death. It's easily the fastest, heaviest and meanest (I'm the one who doesn't look quite right as children plaaay) song on the loads and would go great live. Wow, lots of topics brought up over the weekend. Regarding the whole Rubin thing: I think his greatest attribute to them was helping them focus on what they wanted to do(back to the core of the band). I don't think he has anything to do with song structure/writing. The production, well Rubin is to blame for pushing that sound, and James/Lars are to blame for agreeing to it. They said in a So What interview that they heard it the way it sounds on Guitar Hero and on the CD and they agreed with Rubin and chose the way it was on the CD to be released that way. So the boys can suck up the blame for that. I always thought Devil's Dance was the load records' Sad But True. Heavy and thick. Sure, I think Metallica has made mistakes. The Load records should have been one, then cut out the filler and/or save some for b-sides or soundtracks. Now what tracks to be left off? That is tough based on some of the opinions shown here. I do like Prince Charming, Carpe Diem and Cure(I've never understood the Cure hatred). Now cure and poor twisted are similar bluesy songs, so go with the better of them. I don't think we needed Unforgiven II at all. Attitude, better than you were not good. Mama Said should have been a Hetfield solo song and NOT on a metallica record. There's about 5 less songs. Make one solid record and keep the others for other releases like I said above. Other mistakes: They have said that they were rushed making st. anger(after all the delays they felt they needed to make some kind of release date). I liked a lot of st. anger, but I feel it could have been much better had they spent the time needed. Fuck deadlines, you're the biggest heavy band in the world. Other than that, I think small things like releasing dvd's or something during the long hiatus's(like between the end of the st. anger tour through the release of DM). They are releasing all these dvd's now, well unless they are going right back into the studio following this tour(not happening), they should hold off on this to give us something while they are on their next break. haha, I actually LOVE the Cure. Its just a really good hard rock song in my opinion. I think the Load album was fantastic. Reload on the other hand overall I thought could've been cut in half but whatever. They had started playing Devil's Dance a little bit in Europe on the last tour but dropped it. Cure is a good example of something "off-beat" for Metallica. And I don't mean that in a bad way. Great song. What does it for me are the bluesy solos and other interesting effects. So what if they are not thrashy but they were still at a time when Kirk had feeling in them and they fit the song better. DM is lacking that from the soloa. First the good news: received the Mexican CD/DVD set today from that eBay seller. The picture isn't a clear as the French DVD. I dunno, sure there are a few songs from the Re/Load era I might not like, but... I think it works as a whole. I think Load is easily their most diverse album. ReLoad is a little more... um, direct(?). I'll take Mama Said, Poor Twisted Me and Low Man's Lyric all day everyday over Attitude, Cure and Prince Charming (which seem pretty routine to my ears). I love those songs because they dared to do them... they may fall flat to some, but I embrace them. I dunno... sometimes I think the albums and the songs and how they fit to you depend on where you were in your life when they came out, etc. I was young and brash for Master and TBA... but by the Load's I was (somewhat) older and more mature and wasn't afraid to stray and experiment some in my music. I've said this before but if load & reload were one cd then it would be killer. As it stands though there's so many sucky songs.. Cure, Twisted, Attitude, Better, U2, Wild Things.. And while Devil's Dance isn't terrible there's not really any good riffs, the intro tries way to be hard to be groovy, and the backwards vocals are really lame. I'd have no problem if they cut that one out too. I appreciate teh experimentation and intergrity of Load, and I love a few of the songs in that era but overall you can definitely tell that Metallica lost their way a bit; perhaps a loss of hunger after the world domination that was the black album and the following tours? See I like twisted and cure. I think they are both cool bluesy heavy rock songs. But again, one LP, one EP, a couple of left over b-sides and a couple of scraps. They really ought to do a load medley at their shows now. While at work here I've been watching a bootleg of 12/5/1986 in quebec city. I love them live now, but they were just nasty as shit back then. On the other hand, even their "slower" songs(bells, sanitarium) were played at a much faster pace than the recorded versions. I think the guys got (& still do) a lot of ribbing from Load & ReLoad than they deserve. What I like about this band is the fact that you can't put parameters around them. I agree that there are some weaker songs on ReLoad and prefer Load more. Metallica still seems to be really giving the metalheads whatever they ask for these days... it's all part of their redemption plan, I think. Devil's Dance is a great song, but Sad But True is better, can't see them having two slow stompers on tour... Sad But True wins. I still think it's significant that different people hear different things in the same songs. I have a great dislike for Wild Things and love Prince Charming. JD has the exact opposite reaction. Tastes vary, but it shows how wide a swath of musical tastes the band has cut. Not to badmouth Slayer, because I love their music, but if you don't like Angel of Death, you probably aren't going to like Silent Scream or Snuff. They just aren't a particularly diverse band. They create one kind of song, and they do it exceedingly well. (As a friend of mine used to say, they have no idea what they are doing, and they aren't about to let that hold them back.) Metallica has made such a wide variety of music, but all of it seems to find an audience that enjoys it. There's something special in that. (St. Anger not withstanding.) I'm going to agree with ******* on the Load/Reload should be one album thing. To paraphrase James, sometimes they polished some turds to get a full CD of music. The one CD concept wouldn't work, two reasons: 1.There are way more good songs than not so good songs on the LOADS. While we seem to disagree on which Load/Reload songs are bad, we can all agree (I think) that there's way more filler on those two then in their previous five albums. Nothing fidgety and uncertain about those two to me - at all. I don't get the (somewhat) dislike for UII, it's a clever little song. I don't think WTWA is a masterpiece, but I have a fondness for it... there are definitely weaker tunes out there. Some songs didn't age well from the Loads - the weaker songs from the older albums seemed to have aged better. So much so, that those weaker tunes are now classics. I never cared for UII. I just saw no need for it, it did not seem different enough in structure to be album worthy. UIII is completely different from I or II, which is how I like it. My big 4 running order: Metallica Megadeth Anthrax Slayer Yes, *********, SBT is significantly better than Devil's Dance, but it's played every damn night. I think Sandman is the only "have to" song they have(not that it's their best song, but overall most widely known). They could mix up every other song they have. Keep the same set framework(faster song here, slower/heavier here/mellower song here), but they have plenty of songs to fit in any and all of those categories. Yet again, the beauty of this band. Such differing opinions amongst hardcore fans. Live at the show, SBT is good, live recordings of it, not so much, it loses it's power without that volume. But TBA version of SBT to me is awesome. And the thing is, when it first came out, I usually skipped over it. Once I saw them play it on the stadium tour with GNR, I went back to the record and really got into it. By significantly better, I did not mean to slight DD. I like it a lot too, but I've probably listened to it less than half the times I've gone back to SBT. All this talk definitely has me planning on putting reload back in the car for a few spins(I'll be taking out a pantera mix of songs). It's really a tough call as SBT is pretty much already a classic. It has the history and it's a song *everyone* know. To me, yes...it's an amazing song and the first song from Metallica that showed a little "groove" and it's waaaaay heavy. Looking at it a little closer, it's more than a tad repetitive - it just sort of plods and sits in it's little comfort zone. An amazing song... once song #2 came up on TBA, you knew the rules had changed.. the band wasn't afraid to sacrifice speed to make things heavy. DD just has that groove... it just goes places. It moves, it shakes. It's an unsung hero and underrated. It takes the groove and SBT and just makes it greasy. Let's not discount Thingy. Another D-tuned monster that trudges along. Man, if Thing would've been made during TBA, I think it would've crushed even harder than it does already... it's great already, but with the sound and their freedom to let things breath a bit more... Metallica is all about pleasing the majority of the audience at their live shows, no matter how monotonous it may become... and not only is Sad But True a better song than Devil's Dance, it's also a crowd pleaser. When it comes to a live show, the audience is always the boss. The audience calls the shots. No audience, no show... the bigger the audience, the bigger the business. Oh man Kurt. Thanks for bringing up -Human. My guess is it can't be reproduced properly without the low brass section, but I'd love to hear it live. Word from the band in the past has always been that they don't make as much on a festival tour as they do on a traditional tour. I remember Kirk saying during the 2003 Summer Sanitarium that there are so many bands, and they all get paid equitably (if not equally) so the shows just break even for Metallica. So the Big Dollars thing wouldn't be valid. Does anyone else remember this, or am I imagining it? I'm sure it'll be a crazy successful tour, but Metallica already sells out pretty much every show, and unless the ticket prices are run up a huge amount, it's not going to make much more money. I can appreciate the creativity in Low Man's Lyric, but rarely find myself really wanting to hear it. In my world, I have very little interest (if any at all) in Slayer, Megadeth or Anthrax... I've heard them all quite a bit and they all play their instruments extremely well, but that's not enough for me. These bands don't suck, they just don't do it for me. Probably doesn't help that I'm not much of a metalhead... I'm a Metallica fan. St. Anger might very well be Metallica's bravest and most honest album to date which showcases boat loads of talent and freshness if your willing to see (I mean hear) past the flaws. Don't be like everybody else, there are great songs on this album. Fans of future will see this album for what it is... a masterpiece of a different kind. Mark my words. Whoever said a masterpiece can't be flawed... both St. Anger and Death Magnetic(I've change my opinion on this album) are masterpieces in their own ways... flawed or not. Yeah, St. Anger, there's so much good on it, but... All Within My Hands is one of my favorite songs ever... right up to the "Kill Kill Kill" part where it falls apart for me. I still enjoy it, but... it's sad really. Authors have a concept of a trusted critic... someone who can look at what they have written (but it can apply to writing, painting, music, movie, whatever) and tell the writer if they think it sucks. The author can decide whether or not to listen to them if they feel that whatever they don't like is important to the artistic vision, but it's still important to have someone to say "Yeah, you're navel gazing here." Example is that if George Lucas had someone to tell him "Jar Jar bad" we might have been saved from three crappy movies. It's a simple concept, and I think it applies to St. Anger's problems. For a long time, Lars and James functioned as each other's trusted critics. They may have fought, but anything had to be able to survive the fire of the other's criticism in order to make it to the album. In my opinion, as the relationship broke down, they became less and less able to provide reasonable feedback, and the albums suffered. By the time St. Anger came around, they were afraid to truly tell each other what they felt for fear of breaking up the band. In particular, no one wanted to tell James when something sucked. "Hey, maybe write some lyrics for these verses instead of just repeating one over and over?" "Did you know that it's been proven that Invisible Kid causes aneurisms?" "Slow section in Frantic blows goats and destroys the momentum of the song." "Purify does not need lyrics. Let it be a brutal instrumental" "Two Words: Guitar Solos" If they had been able to have a fight, the great ideas that are all over the album could have been stripped of the really crappy parts, the production problems could have been fixed, and it would have been a great album. "Dirty Window", "My World", "SKOM" all contain the pieces of what could have been Metallica's greatest album ever, if the songs had just been assembled properly. Ian Christie has stated on one of his shows that inexperience with Powertools also contributed to the problem, and that the dvd live rehearsal versions are much better (he's right about that part) but I think most of the songs have too many defects to ever function in their current form. I respect Lars' statements about not going back and revisiting the past, but there's so much brilliance in that album that gets lost in the bad ideas and production that it's really a tragedy that it had to end up that way. Maybe someday they'll feel comfortable with going back and fixing it. Not holding my breath, though. I think St. Anger will always be a tragic example of wasted potential. Yes, st. anger is overanalyzed. I like st. anger. The only songs I dislike on it are shoot me again and invisible kid(at least I like some of the riffs on that). My biggest problem with st. anger(no, not the snare or lack of solos) is that in each song there is something I don't like about it. Some songs had the repetitive vocals, others had either large or small parts that made me cringe(minus frantic and my world, nothing really bothers me about either of them). But minus those two songs, I really liked the majority of the record. Like I've mentioned before, another 3-4 months spent on it probably could have made it noteably better. Still hope the outtakes and presidio material see the light of day. JD, yes, the flicks were more for kids(although episode 3 was not as much), but the continuing storyline in the novels is not. It's worthy of all the crap thrown at it, in my opinion. There's a few songs/moments where the raw fury that pervades most of the album does actually line up with some excellent music, but those moments are exceedingly rare- a riff or two here, maybe sweet amber in it's entirety... just the occaisonal moment. I don't buy the "flawed masterpiece" thing either- sure it's experimental, weird and rather unique, but so is Metal Machine Music (a lou reed album, look it up), so is a ton of really shitty artrock etc etc. Most of the riffs on stanger are mindnumbingly boring, death-by-pentatonic stuff that most people could think up by very quickly. The bizarre production is the least of it's problems (I actually like the production, myself). Indeed, the "quality" of the other music we've heard (i.e the snippets of presidio stuff in SKOM's soundtrack) suggests that Metallica's creative well was truly dry in the early part of this decade. Perhaps, as Azrael said, the James-Lars relationship at this point was the reason. Regardless, St.Anger blows and is an embarrasment to the band. *********- yep, clearly you're not a metalhead. Clearly, you're also an idiot. Megadeth has no variety? Wtf? Have you actually, you know, listened to any Megadeth? doesn't seem like it. And same with Slayer- the whole "every Slayer album is the same" thing just isn't valid if you've heard their earlier stuff. Show no Mercy, Haunting the Chapel, Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood (not to mention the far slower South of Heaven)... all rather different from each other (certainly more different from each other then RTL-MOP-AJFA) and all completely awesome. Sure, Empire and Sith are much darker and not as kid friendly... just saying that those of us that grew up with original trilogy had expectations that were way too high and forgot that these are still at the heart of it - kids films. The only song on St. Anger I thought that stood out as a great song was Frantic, and after seeing it live, with Hammett kicking in a solo it would have been a classic. I wasn't a big fan of St. Anger, but it also wasn't that bad of an album. I would say it was probably the most honest album they could have produced. Nickleback does seem to be one of those bands where you can tell they have a lot of love for the early metal pioneers, they just don't reflect that in their music. Or they aren't talented enough to be in the same ballpark if they tried. There have been little tastes of it where the have done doodles in their live concerts (like the Dimebag tribute they did) and a small medley of Metallica songs. *********, I can agree with you on John Bush. I find he gets way more crap then he deserves. I don't know too many people who have talked about the album "the threat is real", but that is one of my favs of theirs. Well, put me in the boat that slayer doesn't stray very far from formula. I like slayer, but pretty much every album has 1-3 songs that stand out to me, and the rest all kind of sound like background music to me. Which is why I was surprised that a good 5 songs stuck out to me on World Painted Blood. Anthrax has a lot of great music besides sound of white noise. In fact, lately I've listened to a lot of Among the Living and Persistence of Time. Both of those records are cover to cover listens for me. I only like Be all/end all off of State of Euphoria and don't care for much off the first couple records. As far as the Bush era is concerned, White Noise is great, Stomp only has a couple of memorable songs(tester for certain). I thought Volume 8 had some really good songs, yet that record seems to have been written off. WCFYA had some good songs. Ironically, their most "metal" attempt on that record(black dahlia) totally sucks. Nickleback, well they have all but admitted they write pop songs cause it pays the bills. I think the lead guy is a metalhead at heart though. I took the wife to see Bon Jovi a couple of years back and nickleback opened for them. They played some pantera and metallica stuff, which I loved, and my wife was like "what the hell was that?" I don't like much pop rock, but I'm not offended by it as most metal guys are. Hey, that stuff opens the doors to many people to the larger world of heavier music. I bet you back in the day, slayer, metallica etc were discovered by kids AFTER being exposed to hair band stuff on the radio. Interesting shot at Dave mustaine by a former guitarist. A few things about the Mexican CD/DVD package. James yelling/singing the song title - notbably during The Unforgiven (twice around the solo, I think) is annoying. ...and speaking of The Unforgiven, Kirk's tone during (what's supposed to be) the twangy (clean) part is not even close to twangy. During the Roam tour, he used a Strat to get that sound and it worked (mostly), now he's using an ESP and it doesn't work to well to my ears. The edits on that DVD are a little too fast and furious at times. Drives the guitar player in me nuts as I might try to watch how a part is played or something, or just marvel at the playing a bit. Rob didn't seem to get too much screen time. I hope we get a DVD release of a full indoor concert. Just wanted add another thought to the whole Slayer/Nickelback "fallacy". When I listen to both these bands I hear two very uninteresting bands with potential. Now maybe if there was a way to mash up the two bands together, there might be something of interest there, in the likes/caliber of Metallca, Machine Head, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, TOOL and System Of A Down for example. The thing I was simply saying is that the first few Slayer albums were pretty much the heaviest things going at the time (still super heavy now), sounded like nothing else, have been ridiculously influential, and are rightfully metal classics. Sidestepping the current debate, last night I was watching the seattle binge and purge disc on a crappy dvd player. I'm not a technophobe, so I'm not sure the specifics, but music discs on this are loud on drums, vocals and rhytm guitar, while low on bass and lead guitars. There's some cool odds and ends on my Youtube account... mostly Load era, but some tasty Spastik stuff too. Yup, the most important part of this site - to me - is the comments. But, there is also so much information out there already - met.com and Blabbermouth, notably - that I'm at the point of what do I bother to post as an actual news item? I'll probably do a Misc. News piece mentioning the Big 4 and Metallica becoming the king of the Soundscan era today. There are parts of the Inter Sandman I really, really like design wise. I never was very good at flash - and it's kinda passe now - but the flash bits of the band members on the Resources/The Band page are nice, I impressed myself with that. The flash bit in the Calendar is cool... but very dated (no updates in 5 years), didn't age well (and yeah, the calendar was supposed to be a lot more like the one on met.com... but, the seeds of that stayed with those guys). Alot of this site doesn't carry over well with widescreen monitors (something I learned about ALOT of the sites I did back then once I got the 23"); There's a ton of research and time that went into the making of IS... and once I started getting a bit of a life (hah!) it kinda never got finished proper like.... I'm just sort of paging through the site... so this is all kinda stream of consciousness. Heh, not a thing in the 'Interact' section. Resources/Multimedia.. wow, I forgot about those desktop designs. Damaged Puppets - what ever happened to that!?! One day, I will finish that Metallica Encyclopedia. Lots of names missing from that 'Thanks' page... I was fortunate to find a few old timers (AOL MMC - from So What! magazine - issue 2) on facebook, that was fun, they travled to see Met at Donington in 1995 and their trip was in a SW ish way back then too. I'd love to hear the presidio stuff, but I think their writing process is going to see those riffs and lyrics as spare parts sitting around on the floor to be used in future episodes of "Monster Music Studio." My understanding is this is the way they've always done it... Devil's was actually a riff that they tried to use in Sad But True that didn't fit (don't remember where I heard that, so might be BS-welcome to the internet) and we all know that Nightmare came from a reworking of the Cross riff from Presidio. So seeing them give up a bunch of potential song parts (especially when songwriting is such a long process for them) just seems like an unlikely scenario. Hope I'm wrong. I think it is possible we will hear the Presidio stuff one day. The material is recorded, and in some cases, complete (whatever that is) for the most part. Remember in SKOM when they were playing completed tracks for what would become St Anger for Cliff & Peter from Q-Prime. Some of the songs they played were Shadows of the Cross, Temptation, and some other material I do not know the name of..I don't expect to see it until they do some kind of retrospective box set, which will likely only happen when they call it a career. Hell, since they are out of their record contract, I can see them releasing a couple of songs hear and there via itunes, or their own website, or whatever, and doing short tours. I'd prefer full albums, but other groups are starting to take this approach and it wouldn't surprise me if they did. I said this when it came and it's true in my household. Guitar Hero would create new metallica fans. My sons are 10 and 7. I took the 10 year old to see metallica last january, and now the seven year old is turning into a metallica nut. He's got a pair of drumsticks and he takes them everywhere, air playing along to metallica(or bon jovi, although he told me bon jovi's drumming is too slow). I've got the livemet of the concert I went to and he sits in his room with his drumsticks while he's playing it. And this is all thanks to both of them being exposed to it by guitar hero. Now my only problem is I can't find him a t-shirt that fits him. He's especially pissed cause my 10 year old has one(he's an adult medium already). The wife does not like heavy music(bon jovi/recent aerosmith is as heavy as she goes) and she blames me. He's about 5'2", 130 lbs. He wonders why I don't throw him around like my younger guy(about 4'1", 60 pounds). I'm like, DUH, I can't. He's built for football, but he's kind of a passive personality. The doctor "estimates" six foot three or so. The kid grows out of clothes so fast it ain't funny. Of the DM songs, the first one I'd drop would be BB&S. Still, I'm sure they'll keep mixing things up, including which DM songs get played. Blackened in the encore seems an interesting fit. Cyanide and EOTL could be dropped. I liked bbs prior to seeing it live, but loved it afterwards. It should stay in the set. ANL was pretty powerful too. The one two punch from DM is cool, but I'd rather have Cyanide than TEOTL. Cyanide is catchy and the chorus is good for a concert. BBS is a great song and great live. Will they ever play U3 live?? Does anyone have the France show on Blue Ray? I do, and I swear the audio/visual is a split second out of sync. The love for metallica has had me sign up my seven year old for drum lessons. They start next week. He has asked me repeatedly if I thought it would be cooler to be James or Lars(and he has a mild form of autism, so beleive me when I say repeatedly, I really mean it). I never really answer him though, cause he'll end up choosing guitar or drums based on my opinion, and I want him to make his own choice. So far, he went with Lars. I was wondering, do you guys think they will play the whole Black album on it's 20th anniversary? It would make sense to me. And on the plus side, we would get some never before played songs. So I'm just finishing up work at 6 last night when I get a call to rush home. My 10 year old splits his forehead open and I've got to take him to the hospital where he gets 8 stitches. Meanwhile, my 7 year old stays home with his grandmother. He makes her sit through the France dvd. It was just finishing up when I got back from the hospital. I expected her to ask me about the music Alex was listening to. And she did ask, just not what I expected. She tells me she thought they were great and couldn't beleive how well they played their instruments. This is a 63 year old greek woman. I was shocked that that was her response. She said she wants to watch it with him again the next time she has to babysit.
