10/20/2009 Entry: "NIMES & OZZY"

Metallica's concert from July 2009 at the historic Arenes de Nimes in Nimes, France will be titled Francais Pour Une Nuit ("French For One Night") includes the full show, interviews and more is available November 23, 2009. The show will be sold outside of France via Metallica.com.

The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert Site has announced that "Ozzy Osbourne will join Metallica in their section of the show on October 30th. More special guest will be announced in the next few weeks."

UPDATE: The Rock Hall 25 site has updated that Ray Davies of the Kinks will also join Metallica onstage. The Kinks were part of the so-called 'British Invasion' of the 60's. The Kinks' guitar sound - much due to the cutting of slices into the speakers of their amplifiers - notably on the song 'You Really Got Me,' "arguably provided a blueprint for hard rock, and served as template for heavy metal." (Wikipedia)

Kirk's also mentioned Ozzy being part of the Metallica set at the Rock Hall show, he's also mentioned that Tony Iommi might join them as well (here). Metontour footage has footage of the band jamming to the Black Sabbath classic 'War Pigs' in their backstage practice space (here).

UPDATE: The Madison Square Garden website also lists Lou Reed as a guest during Metallica's set (but not Ray Davies).

Does that mean Ozzy and MetallicA on the same stage at the same time? If so, I for one can't wait!

Ray Davies is also going to play with Metallica.

Yeah, I can't wait to see this.

Gonna see Metallica tonight in Toronto. BUt here's a question for anyone who can answer it.

Who are the opening acts for Metallica? Are there any? I've been trying to find out but nothing on the net. Any clue?

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 10/26/2009 01:11 AM EST

I believe its Lamb of God and some Danish band that Lars brought out, Volbeat or something?
I have already seen Lamb, so I was hoping for Machine Head

Well, it looks like I'll be seeing the opening bands this time, I didn't win a backstage pass.
Ya, I know, boohoo;)

Posted by manguy @ 10/26/2009 08:11 AM EST

I checked out Volbeat, not too shabby, nothing too special but they got some pretty decent ruffs and songs, definately worth checking out

Posted by Yukoner @ 10/26/2009 10:24 AM EST

On metontour Toronto is referred to as Tornoto twice and they call the C.n. Tower "the space needle"

this ain't seattle...and wtf is up with not even being able to spell Toronto. Unsure? Look it up!

Posted by TONY @ 10/27/2009 12:06 PM EST

Saw that tony..funny thing is, they spelled Toronto wrong 3 times not 2, lol. But they spelled it Right once, odd, few too many drinks maybe. Leafs suck. Go Habs!

Posted by Mark @ 10/27/2009 02:08 PM EST

I emailed them... They changed it! I feel proud!

Posted by Tony @ 10/27/2009 07:11 PM EST

I checked out Volbeat. Theyre pretty fuckin good. Something new and fun to listen to. I ended up downloading three of their albums form itunes. I'd love to see them open for Metallica. They definitely have some good hard riffs and catchy tunes. Thanks manguy and yukoner for letting us know about them.

Posted by MONSTER @ 10/29/2009 03:47 PM EST

why the hell would you download an album from itunes? It's got all the price of a CD and the satisfaction of an MP3. Just pirate it and buy the cd ffs.

Hey I just noticed...this site is 15 years old now isnt it? Thats a milestone for sure. Good job JD.

Any clues on how to get a couple of good videos from the RRHOF concert from last week?

Posted by EPDA @ 11/03/2009 11:04 PM EST

Anyone hear the track World Painted Blood from the new slayer record. VERY similar main riff to All Nightmare Long. Not that it's a bad thing, I like the song. But I hear a lot of ANL and even some My Apocolypse(which people said was metallica sounding like slayer) in it.

Posted by kurt @ 11/05/2009 01:01 PM EST

I have seen Metallica close to 40 times and met them several times through a friend of ours who knew Jason from years back. Our friend lost his connection when Jason left but was able recently to get back in touch with them through Gio, Jasons now James bodyguard. He was at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I dont know why it bothered me but the story in the Metallica camp is that James is off the wagon drinking again. Not hardcore, but again will have some drinks. Not sure if I believed him or not but recently saw a video of what appeared to be James drinking. I drink so would never judge, but I wonder if anyone else has heard this? Not trying to be a dick and start something, just genuinely concerned after all the crap they went through.

Posted by Seek @ 11/05/2009 01:30 PM EST

My buddy has given us all access, watch the show from the side of the stage, stay on their hotel floor, etc, so I have no reason not to believe him on anything Metallica.

Posted by Seek @ 11/05/2009 01:32 PM EST

http://entertainment.ca.msn.com/music/news/cp-article.aspx?cp-documentid=22491585 now that woulda been way too cool !! haha

Posted by Yukoner @ 11/06/2009 07:21 PM EST

well seek, perhaps James is cured to the extent that he can have a few without going crazy. That's what I think, anyway.

Look at it on the bright side, though: if he does become a raging alcoholic again we're a lot more likely to get another album of the first four's quality.

Posted by caspian @ 11/07/2009 06:16 AM EST

Just got tix to see the boys on the 14th and 15th at the Garden. Can't wait. I've never seen them back to back!!

Posted by MONSTER @ 11/08/2009 09:02 PM EST

If Seek is for real, then I am really concerned...I hope James is OK.

Hey guys i need some help, I Live in Colombia and a friend just told me that world magnetic tour will be hitting our country in 03/10, but i havent been able to find any official tour dates for 2010....any ideas?
Thanks

Posted by EPDA @ 11/09/2009 12:25 PM EST

After giving it a few spins, I have to say I like the new slayer better than endgame. They didn't break new ground or anything, and their solo's are pretty much a mish-mash of effects, but song wise it has more I'll listen to than endgame.

Posted by kurt @ 11/09/2009 12:52 PM EST

I'm playing Playing With Dolls a lot. This is the first Slayer I've bought in a very long time... and the first one I've appreciated since Seasons In The Abyss.

...I just wish they would've worked a little harder on the chorus of these songs. Seasons and South of Heaven at least had some amazing thrash bits that were catchy - in a sinister, evil way. This new Slayer seems to just miss that mark.

Posted by IS-JD @ 11/09/2009 04:37 PM EST

Well, I think it is much better than Christ Illusion, where the only song that has stuck with me over time is eyes of the insane. This one I like the title track, hate worldwide, snuff, psycopathy red and playing with dolls.

Since seasons, the only songs that have really stuck out to me have been the first death's head and stain of mind from Diabolicus, eyes of the insane and payback and bloodline from God Hates us All.

To be honest, I only really like a couple of tracks from seasons and south of heaven as well. So for me to like this many songs on a slayer disc is a bit unusual.

I never expected to like it more than endgame. It's too bad anthrax haven't gotten their shit together. It would have been nice to have a new release from each of the big four roughly within a year of one another.

Posted by kurt @ 11/09/2009 05:36 PM EST

If I bought a Slayer CD since Seasons, I can't remember... and I haven't added to iTunes (and that's 65 GB of music). I purchased this new solely on strength of the 'Dolls' preview that I heard on Blabbermouth.

But, I do have a weakness for a great deal of Seasons.

Anthrax looks likes they're getting it together, last I read, Bush was going to re-sing the parts that the new-old guy recorded.

Endgame... well, 44 Minutes is decent.

Posted by IS-JD @ 11/09/2009 09:27 PM EST

well I'm going to see MegaDave for the 1st time in concert in a few weeks and I am pumped. All I know is that guy puts together some of the baddest riffs in the history of metal. song structure and obviously his voice struggle but other than that so sincere.

Posted by marcus @ 11/10/2009 06:07 AM EST

Metallica announced a handful of Central and South American dates. Mostly in March with one date in January.

Posted by Trace @ 11/10/2009 01:59 PM EST

No doubt I will be attending the concert in Bogota!!!

Keey king interview.... complete on http://www.spin.com/articles/qa-slayers-kerry-king

"Do you look around at other bands that have had similar long-term success and compare them to Slayer?
There's a bit of that. But it's hard to compare us to other bands. The obvious thing to do is to compare us to the other bands in the "Thrash Big Four," but Anthrax has gone through so many singers that it's not the same band it was back in the '80s; Megadeth is it's own thing; Metallica became a pop band and stopped being metal. We never did. There's no one else like us."

Posted by EPDA @ 11/10/2009 04:47 PM EST

"There's no one else like us."...Thank fuck... one Kerrry King is already too much...Fuck Kerry King!

Posted by EET FUK @ 11/10/2009 06:11 PM EST

If anyone watches house, Metallica had a quick appearence in last nights show. House mentiond that lars ulrich is the greatest drummer in metal history, and they played a little bit of the video to fuel. Thought that was kinda cool.

Posted by Robert @ 11/10/2009 11:49 PM EST

Bit out of character for House.. isn't he supposed to be a very smart guy?

Posted by caspian @ 11/11/2009 02:04 AM EST

MArcus, you will be impressed, I went to the Slayer Megadeth show, and I love both bands, Megadeth was the show for me. Which is funny since Slayer is supposed to be THE live act, I am told..

And Kerry King's comment.. if he had the chance to sell 100 million albums he would, but he can't and he never will. So remain as 'metal' as you need to be

Posted by Yukoner @ 11/11/2009 02:33 AM EST

The problem with Kerry is tact, or lack of it. What he was saying was actually not completely wrong. Metallica did clean up the sound(although calling it pop is a stretch, I still contend that at that time there was nothing as heavy as TBA being played on the radio).

If he weren't such an asshole, he could simply say that metallica have changed their style a bit over the years whereas slayer has stayed true to a particular sound. But no, he has to take a shot.

Speaking of shots from slayer, a few days ago there was a blabbermouth thread that had lombardo and king reviewing records. Lombardo, sarcastically, said "nice attempt" in regard to death magnetic. I'm used to that shit from king, but lombardo? Didn't he get up on stage and fill in for Lars? I didn't expect him to be a dick about it.

Posted by kurt @ 11/11/2009 05:53 AM EST

Its because he wishes he was Lars and its NOT the other way around.

Posted by marcus @ 11/11/2009 08:57 AM EST

Oh,c'mon ddon't you remember all the bitching when lombardo left Slayer & all the shit that they threw at each other when he was at Grip Inc?For example at an interview back then I remember Dave saying that when he was at Slayer he felt like a horse that they fed and not like a musician! Now that he returned it's like "We are the original Slayer, the 4 of us blah, blah, etc, etc.
Besides Slayer changed their sound at that time the only way they could in order to be more pop(=popular, that's what it means, isn't it?).They couldn't write ballads, but Nu-metal-groove songs, yes they could!Don't you remember Stain of mind?

Posted by Jesius @ 11/11/2009 11:09 AM EST

I think that what MegaDave was pointing out earlier this year is probably the closest thing to the truth: The bands themselves don't give a shit about all this stuff. The websites/rag mags have to have advertisers, so they need to prove web traffic, so they go to the bands and say "hey, Dave, Lars said blah blah about something sort of related to you, what's your response?" and then Dave says "Oh, if he said that, then he's a prick" and so the website goes back and posts "Dave says Lars is a prick." Voila, instant web traffic as everyone posts the link on their favorite forum.

If they can't get one of the bands to say something, they make something up and say "Sources within so and so's organization confirm..." and then use that to get the others to react.

The whole process is self-feeding, and Kerry and Dave get press for their bands by catering to it, but other than that, I don't think any of these guys really sit around their houses going "Damn, I don't know whether to buy a new Ferrari or to decide why I don't like Lars or Dave or Kerry or Scott."

Really, Kerrang and Blabbermouth and all the rest are the organized equivalents of forum trolls. They benefit from the strife, so they keep it going. I'd love to see them all out of work on the side of the road with signs that say "will make up shit about Kerry King for food."

Are these bands made up of a bunch of overgrown children with too much money who give each other shit for fun? you bet. Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? nope. Are assholes who pose questions to themselves in their own posts and answer them to make a point arrogant time wasting pricks who should get back to doing something useful? You bet.

Posted by Azrael @ 11/11/2009 01:51 PM EST

You're onto something their Azrael.

Regarding Dave on DM: Probably just insulting Lars' drum performance. Really, I like Lars but when it comes to thrash drumming he ain't got shit on Dave.

Robert Trujillo ate at my families restaurant (Pio Pio) in NYC a couple of hours ago...sadly I wasn't there but got a call from the manager. He approached Rob and told him about my obsession for the band and that we are going to see them twice in a couple of days, Rob offered to take pics with almost the whole staff...great guy!

Posted by xino @ 11/12/2009 12:47 AM EST

Cool of Rob, xino. Too bad you weren't there.

Posted by Thingy @ 11/12/2009 01:15 PM EST

Have you guys heard of or seen this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5gPVGkZbP8

I think its a documentary on HP Lovecraft, but then I also heard that there might be a film based on the Call of Cthulu story?

Also, I didn't realize that All Nightmare long was based on a Lovecraft story (Hounds of Tindalos)

Posted by manguy @ 11/13/2009 08:57 AM EST

You guys see all the crap with aerosmith? Jesus, they are a mess. I realize they are a pop band now, but I've liked em since the 70's(had get your wings on vinyl). There's no way they can tour without Tyler. He may not be a great vocalist, but he's pretty unique.

Posted by kurt @ 11/13/2009 09:02 AM EST

http://www.theonion.com/content/news/steven_tyler_laid_off_from I am really surprised too, but this kinda made me chuckle... but yeah with no Steve Tyler, there is no Areosmith, and I dont know how good a solo Steve Tyler would be

Posted by Yukoner @ 11/13/2009 09:44 PM EST

Got my VIP ticket to the boys show here in Colombia in mid March/10....those became available today and got sold out in less than 2 hours, pretty amazing!!! Its been said that there will be more than 50.000 in that show, and considering the fact that besides from woodstock 99 the Bogota show was the show with more attendance, I think its very possible, I'll let you know...Peace!

Posted by EPDA @ 11/17/2009 10:14 PM EST

I hope they do another summer sanitarium stadium tour in 2010. That would be sweet if they gave us a little festival love again. I'm sure they can mix in a month or two for the home-turf along w/ Europe...

Posted by marcus @ 11/18/2009 07:13 AM EST

Just got tickets for the Slayer/Megadeth/Testament concert. I've only seen slayer once, a short set at the Ozzfest. Never seen the other two bands.

Posted by kurt @ 11/18/2009 10:11 AM EST

Happy birthday KIRK!

Posted by EPDA @ 11/18/2009 12:41 PM EST

Caspian... While I'll agree with Lombardo being a more superior technical player, bottom line is Lars played on Master of Puppets. Lars Played on RTL, AJFA, The Black Album and Kill 'em all. Fuck Slayer... Last respectable album was diabolus.

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 11/20/2009 08:27 PM EST

Sure, but Lars is the obvious weak points in those albums ;)

And damn dude, Lombardo played on Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel, Hell Awaits (<--fuckin' hell awaits!!) and Reign in Blood! An extremely impressive resume that's *almost* as good as Lars's.

Posted by caspian @ 11/21/2009 11:22 AM EST

Caspian... while I'll agree Lombardo has played on some great Slayer albums, Lars has played on some of the greatest albums of all time. I don't disagree that since Bob Rock, he's a bit lazy as a drummer, that said, Lombardo had played the same damn roll every song.

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 11/21/2009 06:21 PM EST

I cannot believe that we're even comparing Lars Ulrich to Dave Lombardo...R&R HOF'er Lars Ulrich...serious. You can always name a musician thats better than another technically but the guy was partially responsible for the album Master of Puppets. The drummer from Dave Matthews is better than Dave Lombardo technically. Whats your point here...

Posted by Marcus @ 11/23/2009 05:22 AM EST

Lets compare them all to Mike Portnoy :)

Posted by $trangeR @ 11/23/2009 11:18 AM EST

Well let us not forget about Neil Peart too...

Posted by Marcus @ 11/23/2009 11:39 AM EST

Yeah, I love arguments of, "well, he's not as good as .........". Who gives a shit? That doesn't mean he isn't any good, or that he doesn't fit this band. Yes, I think Lombardo is better, but I don't think his style fits metallica better. It works better in slayer.

Has there been any band in history that has had the best: vocalist(however you would determine that), best rhythm and/or lead guitarist, best bass player and best drummer. I don't think so. Since it's not an athletic event with a clear winner, there is no such thing as best guitarist or drummer anyways.

Posted by kurt @ 11/23/2009 03:13 PM EST

Lars kicks ass. James kicks ass. Kirk kicks ass. Rob kickas ass. Jason kicked ass. Cliff kicked ass. pretty fuckin simple. Who's better or not, doesn't really matter. It's all personal preference. Lars kicks ass and fuck kerry king!

Posted by MONSTER @ 11/23/2009 11:03 PM EST

Poor Lars gets bashed all the time. I agree that he fits the band just fine. He's also great at arranging and he seems like he's the "business" man of the group.

Listened to Veteran of Psychic Wars again the other day and James sounds pretty good. I think it would be cool if the guys did an all-acoustic album someday or released a 5 or 6-song rarity. I don't think James gets a lot of credit as a vocalist, which he deserves.

Posted by Thingy @ 11/24/2009 12:59 PM EST

Hey thingy, long time no see. Regarding the acoustic thing, I think that's what they should have done during the loads. Release one strong album, release a mellower(ie Jar of Flies) type EP, and can the couple of crappy songs from those two records. I bet they would have heard a lot less crap had they handled it all that way.

Posted by kurt @ 11/24/2009 02:30 PM EST

Have a good turkey day everybody. Eat, drink, be merry, get fat, get some from your significant other and crank a few met tunes along the way.
