09/27/2009 Entry: "THANK YOU FOR YOUR BEAUTIFUL MUSIC"

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Cliff Burton. Cliff was Metallica's bassist on the first three Metallica albums and a huge influence on the band's work. He was killed in a bus accident in Sweden on September 27, 1986 at the age of 24. He would have turned 47 earlier this year.

"Cliff was so completely honest to himself and the people around him. He hated all this being-put-on-a-pedestal bullshit." - Lars

"He loved music. He was really intellectual but very to the point. He taught me a lot about attitude." - James

CLIFF'EM ALL!!!

The fiancée and I saw Metallica last night in San Antonio, TX.

I have published just a few pics on Facebook.

As usual- they rocked!

Surprises were "Phantom Lord" and "Stone Cold Crazy".

Favorites were "Master of Puppets", "Creeping Death", "Battery" and "One".

James's guitar sound on Master was amazing.

Kirk looked either tired or stoned and made a number of noticeable mistakes.
Also, the top of his head seemed darker. Either he's had plugs or he's using Ronco's GLH.

You degenerates still clinging to this long dead website anymore?

Posted by The Guy @ 09/29/2009 02:01 PM EST

Why do trolls bother with this site? I mean, we're a group of MetallicA fans who enjoy debating, discussing, and sometimes getting riled up at each other. Been this way for years. If ya don't like it, why do you even type it in the address bar? But I digress, RIP Cliff, your memory lives on forever...

LiveMetallica is now offering individual tracks for $.99 a piece.

RIP Cliff. Weird how long he's been gone and the influence he's had to this day.

Just back from Dallas show. Used to live in LA, so got used to the fact that bb arenas suck for sound. Staples is one of the worst. AAC in Dallas makes up in loudness what it lacks in sound clarity. Brutally loud. I'm not sure I ever remember not being able to hear myself screaming at a Met concert.
James was whipping out the growl and scream much more often than we've seen recently. Kirk and Rob split backing duties pretty well, especially Rob on the barking parts.
Dyers and Breadfan. If they'd added in Damage and Judas it would have been everything I've wanted to see this tour. They did Damage for Ozzfest last year, so I'm not too upset about that one.
Yes, James f'd up the vocals on Dyers, but not as bad as the first time. Some dipshit drunk behind me got in a fight (because he kept falling over the seats and landing on people) during Nightmare, so I only saw about half of that, but it was pretty impressive. BBS was INSANE. Holier isn't my least favorite tune from TBA, but not sure why they dragged that one out. No complaints, was a great show. I really won't be able to hear for a week, and tore my throat up in a way that's going to make me really succeptible to swine flu. Totally worth it.

Missed Gojira, LOG was good, although I'm not a cookie monster fan. Billy Milano showed up to do an SOD cover with LOG that was fun.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/30/2009 02:57 AM EST

Cookie monster fan... that's fuckin' funny as hell... those vocals are shit.

Lamb of God is great metal for kids in grade school.

Real men listen to Metallica... Rest In Peace Cliff... gone but never forgotten.

Posted by Acillatem @ 10/02/2009 12:29 AM EST

I have to disagree here. I'm not a kid(38 yoa) and I really like LOG. Of the fairly newer bands they are one of them stand out to me. I'm not a huge "cookie monster" guy either, especially these days when a bunch of bands do it and all sound the same. I think Randy Blythe does it in a way that you know it's him, and it's not all just straight growl. I think he and Phil Anselmo stand out from the rest of the growlers.

new iphone app from livemetallica.com is really good!

Posted by xino @ 10/07/2009 04:46 PM EST

Gave the new Pearl Jam a couple of spins. Not that good. The last one was much better.

Interesting little bit of James discussing Mustaine over on blabbermouth. I liked it cause James rarely gets involved in that stuff.

Right kurt, here's the link http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=128401

Posted by EPDA @ 10/08/2009 07:41 PM EST

OK, so how do you post the link exactly? When I'm on that particular page, just copy what's in the browser? I've always wondered that.

Posted by kurt @ 10/09/2009 09:00 AM EST

Yeah kurt, just like that....
Question, does anyone knows where to find the original interwiew with the metakhead mama? Thanks in advance

Posted by EPDA @ 10/09/2009 10:13 AM EST

Nice link, keep up the good work with the Met news, it appreciated...Dave Mustaine is one sad and fucked up dude, the guy can't let go... bashing Lars and/or Metallica will only make him look weaker... I always new Lars was/is the brainchild behind Metallica and James was/is the heart and soul of Metallica.

Posted by Acillatem @ 10/10/2009 12:14 AM EST

I especially like the part when James says Dave is in love with Metallica and they love him right back... now James is one cool and classy dude. Like I said, the Metallica news is always appreciated... keep it coming.

Posted by Acillatem @ 10/10/2009 12:22 AM EST

Nothing exciting, but "For whom the bell tolls" is used as an into song for the "Zombieland" movie. BTW, this movie kicks ass :)

Posted by $trangeR @ 10/11/2009 05:25 AM EST

Zombieland was fucking great! Most fun movie I seen in ages. Good Van Halen dig in there too

I could be wrong, but I saw the Halo 3 ODST commercial and the singer sounded like Marianne Faithful from The Memory

$trangeR, that's the first time i've seen him play that double neck Lawrence---looks killer. Must weigh a fucking ton though! I love the look of the Ken Lawrence Explorers awesome axes...too bad you have to pretty much be god to get one.

Posted by EET FUK @ 10/13/2009 11:12 PM EST

It's Dave Mustaine quote time again, although a slightly unexpected one:

""So, here are the answers you are waiting for and I after this, I am going to start saying no comment in the interviews because I just cannot stop this feud. It sucks that something that the bands don't even care about, is being kept alive by the fans, and the ones who complain about it are the ones who are keeping this terrible thing alive.

"Here goes: I did say that I thought that we have a better record, but I also said that this is the only time that I have felt like that, and that they have had many great records. I was really disappointed to see my quote taken out of context, and not just out in the net, but even here."

Yo Caspian,

There is a contradicting story on blabbermouth from Dick Mustardstain from Terrorizer magazine. His remarks... man, I've loved Megadeth for a long time, but fuck man... that dude is proving Kerry King's fat cheeseburger soaked ass right. Give Mustaine a media outlet and he buries himself. that said... It's ridiculous Metallica isn't making that DVD from france available here. Guess what... bit torrentz dudes... this thing sounds awesome, and I like the camera work. Here's a link, let me know if I'm insane for preferring the footage better than Cunning (which I still love).

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 10/14/2009 10:14 PM EST

I see Metstore will be carrying the Nimes DVD, will they not send it to anyone if they aren't in France? That would be an odd decision: "Yeah, all you people who want to give us money for this thing we spent silly money to film, produce, mix, and press? Yeah, you keep that money, we'd like to limit our profits."

On a different note, beware the return of the Hetfield Ammo belt, not seen in the wild in nearly 30 years. It was thought to have gone extinct, but there it is, returned from hibernation.
At least he's not wearing the spandex pants *shudder*

I loved Mustaine's earier comments on blabbermouth about his black magic days and his putting hexes on people, I mean I love his riffs and he has awesome songs but this guy has clearly been off his nut for a long time.

Terrorizer: Is [MEGADETH's new album] "Endgame" better than [METALLICA's latest CD] "Death Magnetic"?

Mustaine: "Yes."

Terrorizer: Why?

Mustaine: "To me, one sounds like a record and the other sounds like a jam. Plus we have two lead guitar players. In METALLICA you've got one [referring to Kirk Hammett. — Ed], and he ripped me off anyway.

"I was just speaking to Lars [Ulrich, METALLICA drummer] about the [Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame thing [Mustaine was invited to attend METALLICA's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in April, but didn't get inducted along with his former bandmates. — Ed.], and I said, 'You know what?! I don't give a fuck about you anymore.'

"I used to have this thing that I was secretly pining over one day, getting up there and playing with them again. And I'm thinking, what song would I play? And how could I even stand it?

"I like playing with guys who can keep time.

"I've heard people say that some of the best METALLICA songs they ever heard was when the guy from SLIPKNOT was playing the drums." (SLIPKNOT's Joey Jordison famously sat in for Ulrich when the METALLICA drummer fell ill and could not make it to U.K.'s Download festival in the summer of 2004.)

OK, so one minute he says something remotely nice, or at least says he doesn't want to talk about this anymore. Then he says shit like this. I'm more convinced than ever it's marketing on his behalf. Either that or he's bipolar as all hell.

Posted by kurt @ 10/15/2009 12:55 PM EST

Actually I wholeheartedly agree with Dave. One does sound like a jam, and that would be endgame. Numbnut.

Posted by kurt @ 10/15/2009 12:56 PM EST

Agreed Kurt, and yes he seems to be really bipolar. I don't think we'll see a big 4 tour.

Posted by MONSTER @ 10/15/2009 01:51 PM EST

Wow, i never actually watched Nimes till right now. Sounds amazing! I can actually hear Lars' bass drums (not sure if it was added in later, lol). This should definitely be in a full release all over the world. That venue kicks some major ass.

Posted by Mark @ 10/15/2009 03:26 PM EST

Yo Greenhell..wanna direct a brother to that, cant seem to find it. Would love to get it here for sure...hope its true we can just buy it from the metclub site.

Posted by Mark @ 10/15/2009 07:43 PM EST

Big Mark, what's crackin' player? I was trying to find some of that on youtube, but go to blabbermouth.net and type in metallica in the search part. It'll bring up quite a few articles, and it'll tell you footage from Nimes France. Azrael... that DVD is not going to be formatted for our region (if you're in the US like me). Fuckin' dumb ass move by Metallica, same with their Mexico footage... It's puzzling. I'd pay good dough for those shows man, but fuck it, I'll resort to bit torrentz to get it and buy it if they decide to make it an official release. Them euros already get more action from them, it's not like they need "special" treatment. Not knocking them, just pretty frustrated... back on tour in the states, and nowhere near Colorado.

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 10/15/2009 09:14 PM EST

Greenhell, since you said you'd be willing to pay good dough for the shows you would have some fairly cheap options. Very few U.S. dvd players you would buy at say, walmart, play the PAL format so you could buy a PAL/NTSC converter. Ebay has ones listed for 30 bucks. As for the the Region Code of your DVD player, that's an easy fix. A couple of buttons hit on the remote and Voila! you have a region free dvd player. Check out a site like the following for the code of your particular model.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks?dvdplayer=dvp3962&hits=50

Posted by SRW @ 10/15/2009 11:07 PM EST

Forgot to say, another option would work if you have a dvd burner on your pc. Software such as ConvertXtoDVD will allow you to change the format of a PAL DVD to NTSC. Also using software such as DVD Decrypter you can decrypt dvds and burn a new copy to watch on your home player.

It's that time of year ago. Renewal time... over a $100 outta my pocket to keep IS going. I still haven't gotten a dime from any of our ads.... so is it worth keeping up?

Also anyone in the Detroit area... I have a bowling fundraiser that I need some help with.

Also... I believe the French and Mexican DVD's were supposed to be region free?

http://dashboard.metallica.com/ivergence/image/10oct1309_pic21.jpg - no idea, odd that it has a cord rather than being wireless... heard that Kirk had a "special" guitar walked out in a case at the last gig at a particular time; the guitar was then put back in the case and walked back backstage - could this be that guitar?

Posted by IS_JD @ 10/16/2009 02:28 PM EST

JD... Look man, I know you and I have butted heads. This site is worth keeping up. I'm not sure if you can put some type of link for a donation, but I would like to contribute. No I'm not rich, but if a few bucks from me, and from my boys here like Kurt, Waverly, Thingy, so on and so forth... dude.. this is "the place" for us fuckin' dirt heads. Hopefully bygones are bygones. If you think I'm full of shit, I have my email attached. I know the beginning part to yours. Also... can you create banners to attach to myspace accounts? I'm only on myspace, and I think it would be a shame for this site to go down. Some of the posters are kinda new, but guys like me, Kurt, Waverly, Thingy, Caspian, Blaster, etc I'm sure can help out even if it's a tiny bit. Hopefully you all don't think I'm a prick as I'm not trying to speak on your behalf, but lord knows I've been banned from this thing more than just about anyone.

Side note... I have the Paris show now. I read somewhere it was region specific. All I have to say is "WOW". It's a very powerful concert film. James fucks up some lyrics, and Kirk is off on a couple solos, but you know what?... Fuck studio musicians and hired hands that are in Mustainadeth.

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 10/16/2009 09:08 PM EST

hey JD. I believe the site is worth keeping up. I've been checking almost daily for the last 9 years... you've done a great job with it and I'd hate to think it's not available anymore....

I appreciate your work on this site.

why don't you transfer the site to a free blogger account were we can have posts and comment on them, just like here.... this is an example www.2030byxino.blogspot.com i dont think its a bad idea, you can still put ads up and it's free...think about it

JD, if you could put up a paypal thingy on here, I'll contribut. I've got the means to pitch in and I still check this site daily, whether or not I post something.

I check out blabbermouth, this site and two star wars sites(yes, I'm a bit of a sw geek, no I don't dress up or talk in any make beleive languages) on pretty much a daily basis. It would be sad to see it go.

If you can't do the paypal thing, give me another way to contact you to contribute.

Kurt... I'm a regular on a movie prop forum where the main interest is Star Wars props. While I don't dress up, I do have more than one lightsaber in my collection (9 hilts, with several FX)... and a lifesize Vader in the basement

Posted by IS-JD @ 10/20/2009 08:36 AM EST

Ok, so Kurt and JD, what would be the perfect soundtrack for the Star War movies (any or them) using only `Tallica songs?

Peace

Posted by EPDA @ 10/20/2009 11:07 AM EST

EPDA, I haven't thought of that. But I will say that since they have done the Ecstacy of Gold, I have wondered what a tallica version of the main sw theme, or definitely the imperial march theme, would sound like.

I have a 7 and 10 year old, so I have revisited my youth by buying them tons of star wars toys. Myself, I dig the novels. They have basically extended the timeline to roughly 40 or so years past the last movies(and have a comic line about 150 or so years later), as well as going back in time to past eras. I am currently reading the first star wars "horror" novel, written by Joel Schreiber.

JD, any info on a paypal link for this site?

Posted by kurt @ 10/20/2009 01:37 PM EST

I'm not sure if I'm quite comfortable putting a PayPal link just yet.

Posted by IS-JD @ 10/20/2009 03:42 PM EST

A friend of mine on Facebook said recently (after I announced that I boought tix to Star Wars In Concert) that the best part of those movies was the music. While I don't agree 100%, the music is a huge part of that saga and a totally different animal without it... I wonder if it would've been quite as successful sans Williams' score.

Therefore, I can really see putting any Metallica tunes in those movies.

Posted by IS-JD @ 10/20/2009 05:57 PM EST

err, should've been: Therefore, I can't really see putting any Metallica tunes in those movies.

Posted by IS-JD @ 10/20/2009 05:57 PM EST

In a word, no. The music was a huge part of the movies. Even episode III, it has a great soundtrack. My son has me play a couple of the cuts from it on the way to school very often.

I can't see met tunes in it, just met covers of established sw themes.
