The last year or so has been great, I guess now we're back to 4 or so years of wilderness. "Uninteresting Metallica appearances", "some new live dates" and so on.

Posted by caspian @ 04/27/2009 01:44 AM EST

Nah, they have other tour legs coming up. Gonna have to get used to the breaks though, due to family obligations.
They are playing on my bday. Can't complain!

Posted by manguy @ 04/27/2009 07:55 AM EST

Well, it sure has quieted down. I am resigned to the fact that it will be another 5 years before the next record. What I'm hoping for in the meantime is a live DVD and/or release of rarities(presidio stuff, unreleased DM stuff, whatever). Hell, they've added on some new covers(hole in the sky, remember tomorow) that could part of some kind of package.

Whatever it is, there has to be something good they can release. I think they know five years is too long with nothing, and there is no SKOM movie this time around to kill some time.

Posted by kurt @ 04/27/2009 08:33 AM EST

I also hope we hear some new/unreleased material soon. Hopefully a little quicker than 5 years...maybe 2 or 3, but I doubt it. I think James even acknowledged that 5 years is too long. I also want the U.S. to get the Summer Sanitarium tour back.

Posted by Thingy @ 04/27/2009 12:32 PM EST

James pretty pointedly said 5 years was too long, but then again that was said after st. anger too.

He also said the last year was spent with lars tweaking shit and the record could have been done about a year earlier.

Posted by kurt @ 04/27/2009 05:39 PM EST

yeah, I'm hoping maybe a year off and then they get back to it again while they seem on a roll...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 04/27/2009 09:04 PM EST

I think at the end of recording Death Magnetic Lars hinted at a long wait again, citing they are getting a bit older and need more time with family and whatnot, at a point in their career where they can take their time sorta stuff, but that was last year. I would guess though new record in mid late 2011

Posted by Yukoner @ 04/27/2009 11:32 PM EST

My bet is the next albumn wont hit us until the end of 2013 - if there even is one.

Posted by F1XXX3R @ 04/28/2009 04:49 AM EST

I think they'll tour through next summer for DM, with stadium dates on each side of the pond. There's already been mention of a Russian date. After that.....probably 2012 or 2013, but who knows, maybe they'll surprise us. After all, they did release four albums in four years just over a decade ago. Even if one of those was a cover album and the other a live album.

Posted by Trace @ 04/28/2009 12:55 PM EST

I know we've heard from others before, but when it comes to
D. Magnetic after almost 8 months, What are your standouts-likes/dislikes?

For me, my Favorite song is Broken, Beat & Scarred. I really love the riff from 5:12-5:19! Now the rest of the CD is in order.

TWJYL: 9/10 I think the heartbeat is really cool to start the CD. I watched an interview where Lars mentioned that they we're going to have a flatline sound at the end, but said it sounded too silly. Sorry, no link for the video at this time.

TEOTL: 8.5/10 I love the slow break down and guitar tone @ 5:19.

TDTNC: 9/10 To me, and others have mentioned it, as well,it reminds me of One. I think James sounds pretty good on this one.

ANL: 8.7/10 Cool beginning and some cool riffs. Rippin' solo.

Cyan: 8.5/10 Cool beginning. I had the beginning as a ringtone for a while. I like the concrete angel part in the song. I also like the guitars in this part, especially @ 3:47.

U3: 10/10 Love the beginning-moves me and can listen to it repeatedly. I definitely like this more than the 2nd Unforgiven. I haven't listened to the 1st one in a while, so I need to see which one I prefer. Right now, it's U3, probably mainly due to the fact that it's newer. James is really emotional on this song. Also has a rippin' solo. "Set sail to sea" part is stuck in my head now...I'm guessing this is the next single and hopefully, a video.

TJK: 9.5/10 Awesome beginning. I like the sound @ 23 seconds and always crank it. I also like the "So what now" part. Of course, the "Bow Down" part is also cool. "Judas lives" part and the slower break down are also cool. I also like The drumming during this part.

S&Red. 8/10 Pretty cool, rippin' solo, but a little too repetive. I can't remember, does James do the solo on the Non-Guitar Hero version?

Apoc: 8.4/10 Growing on me a little more. I think the beginning is awesome. "Crushing Metal" part is pretty cool. Awesome solo and I like the wobbly part @ 2:43. I also like how it starts over @ 2:54. 3:43 guitar chugs are cool.

Overall, I think it's a solid effort. Even after listening to it this long, I'm still able to kind of hear different things. Maybe we'll hear some D.Mag riffs tonight on Time Warp.

Posted by Thingy @ 04/29/2009 05:49 PM EST

I hate the damn album. Won't come out of my cd player for some reason. ;-)

WTF is that ? Never seen Kirk's guitar like that before, is it fake ? I guess $18.000 says it is not ?

$trangeR -
It's a limited edition 20th anniversary ESP.
There were only 20 or 21 made and Kirk owns two or three of them.
I think they originally sold for $8K or $9K, but are going up in value because of the rarity I guess.

In set list news, Metallica played Dyers Eve tonight in Hamburg. They also played The Small Hours for the first time in eleven years last week in Leipzig.

Posted by Trace @ 05/12/2009 05:52 PM EST

I don't like how livemetallica took out the album notes section on their page, I enjoyed those tidbits!

Posted by Yukoner @ 05/13/2009 02:33 AM EST

I can see why they would stop with that though. When they started it, it was when they started playing stuff rarely, if ever, played. Obviously Dyer's still fits that category, but they have pretty consistently played a lot of the older/rarer tunes since livemetallica has been up. They probably ran out of interesting things to keep saying.

Hell, now it is news if they played a load/reload/st anger tune.

I still say they could make a cool medley out of that stuff. I've always preferred the heavier stuff, but have lots of love for the other stuff too.

After taking a break from DM for a little, and actually playing a fair amount of st. anger, I put it back in the car a week ago and it hasn't left it again.

Posted by kurt @ 05/13/2009 09:05 AM EST

Pretty cool Metontour vid. is up. James mentioned that he got a new Orion tattoo for Cliff & Kirk got a DM Guitar. http://dashboard.metallica.com/ivergence/image/05may1209_pic18.jpg

I listened to some Garage Inc, Justice and Puppets last week, but DM is back in the CD player.

Got Ride the Lightning goin in the pick-up... Flea's comments on Fight Fire With Fire got me back into it.

Posted by Yukoner @ 05/13/2009 09:50 PM EST

Great, great series, Go Pens!

Posted by SRW @ 05/14/2009 03:23 AM EST

did Lars actually do the double kick on dyer's eve this time? I'm guessing no (as he seems to have lost most of his technique) but there's always hope..

Posted by caspian @ 05/14/2009 06:28 AM EST

I really dislike the negativity espoused by many regarding the live performances. In many ways, I'm just glad they are still playing at all.

That said, Lars didn't double kick much, and Kirk really butchered the solo on Dyers. He seems to be nailing most of the solos, particularly the DM songs. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that they haven't played it since 2004, and only a few times ever. But if you are going to play it, spend the time re-learning the solo.

Posted by kurt @ 05/14/2009 02:01 PM EST

So you "dislike the negativity espoused by many of the live performances" and are "glad they are still playing at all"...but then you follow it up with what in my opinion is a few negative comments about the live performance of Dyers Eve...

Posted by Mark @ 05/14/2009 02:31 PM EST

Yes Mark. That was my point exactly. I am not one who regularly bitches and complains "no double bass", "kirk missed a solo", yadda, yadda.

But in this case, someone asked here, and on another site, how they pulled off Dyers. So I gave an honest opinion.

So yes, when I hear a mistake I notice it, but am still very happy that in 2009 I am still able to see them live.

Posted by kurt @ 05/14/2009 03:16 PM EST

If our boys have the balls to play Dyer's Eve live....we should not complain. Come on, how many people can play that song?? We should expect that they may not play it perfectly, but hey let's appreciate that they want to play it. That's a crazy song and I love it but I know they're not praticing it on a regular basis so ease up on them. They want to have fun and play difft song....we shouldn't be too critical...I agree with many, thank God they're still playing and making awesome music!!

Posted by MONSTER @ 05/14/2009 11:10 PM EST

I know what you guys Mark & Kurt are saying and I respect it. i was talking more for the ones that will start bitching just to bitch and find something wrong with our heroes that are playing at a high intense pace in their 40's.

Posted by MONSTER @ 05/14/2009 11:13 PM EST

It's live, they'll mess up here and there. Like others, I'm just glad they are still playing constantly and they still enjoy it. I was listening to some Lightning tonight and some Symphony. The beginning of Battery is so awesome with the power of the symphony. Live, I wouldn't mind hearing -Human again or Outlaw. Come to think of it, and since they're using the intro tapes a little more, I say let's hear it on For Whom The Bell Tolls...maybe record 4 or 5 chimes and then let the band kick in live. That's the 1st song that got me hooked on MetallicA. That song is awesome with the symphony-love the echo parts.

Posted by Thingy @ 05/14/2009 11:34 PM EST

Well, on blabbermouth they posted the metontour vid of Dyers, you ought to see all the bitching there. Regarding Kirk's solo, I think he can play it fine, he just fouled up this particular time. Since he's nailing all the DM solo's, I don't think it's a matter of chops.

Thingy, man I would love to hear -Human. I wonder why they don't ever play it.

Also on my wishlist:

Frayed Ends
Struggle Within
Cure*
My World*

*I'm pretty sure these two have virtually NO shot of being played live, but maybe my first two.

Posted by kurt @ 05/15/2009 09:10 AM EST

I want to hear a 17-minute version of Escape.

Posted by Seth @ 05/16/2009 03:40 PM EST

Why has Fade To Black been left off the tour? I thought it was a regular staple like Master of Puppets and Seek and Destroy..

Posted by Yukoner @ 05/17/2009 02:41 PM EST

It really hasn't been a play it every night standard since the mid-90's, although it was still played pretty frequently on the St. Anger tours.

I'm not really sure why they've played it so rarely on this tour although I have heard suggestions that perhaps they're aren't playing it as much because it has similar a structure to One and The Day that Never Comes. They did play it on Sunday, though, and even moved One down a few spots in the set to fit it in.

Posted by Trace @ 05/18/2009 12:27 AM EST

I would agree that it's because it's similar to one and tdtnc's structure, so how many of those can they put in the setlist every night. One is probably never going to be skipped, and tdtnc will not be skipped on this tour most likely.

Pretty cool clip of James playing Aesthetics of Hate with Machine head on blabbermouth. Apparently there are some pics from metallica.com too.

Posted by kurt @ 05/18/2009 09:04 AM EST

I am looking everywhere for the long sleeve shirt that has Kirks tattoo along the bottom of it, if anyone has a lead on one that'd be great.

Posted by Ra Lee @ 05/18/2009 01:04 PM EST

Well, they played dyers again, and on the same night as my apocolypse. I just kinda figured two faster songs like that wouldn't be in the same setlist.

And sure enough as we were discussing above, they played fade to black.

Posted by kurt @ 05/19/2009 04:42 PM EST

Question- after the DM tour ends in 2010 or whenever, which DM songs do you still see being regulars in the set?

Posted by Trace @ 05/20/2009 04:40 PM EST

I would think either that was just your life, or all nightmare long. Also, i see the day that never comes being played on the nights that fade to black, or sanitarium is not being played.

Posted by Robert @ 05/20/2009 10:48 PM EST

TDTNC, TWJYL or TEOTL I would say...not because they are the best but because they are the ones played every show

Posted by Mark @ 05/20/2009 10:52 PM EST

I definitely think Broken, Beat & Scarred will stay in. Also, The Day and maybe Cyanide, since James says it's a fun song to play. Just watched the Metontour vid. from 5-16 and it's pretty cool. The guys seem really cool and appreciative. I also think Rob's backup vocals are getting better.

Posted by Thingy @ 05/20/2009 11:57 PM EST

I see a rotation of twjyl, bbs, tttnc, all nightmare and my apocolypse.

I think Judas Kiss and Cyanide and eotl won't be often played.

I think UIII will eventually be played this tour, but I don't know about afterwards.

Posted by kurt @ 05/21/2009 01:38 PM EST

Well, to answer my own question, I tend to agree with Thingy, that the three that are most likely to stay are Day, Broken & Cyanide. I'm guessing Nightmare, Judas & Apocalypse will get rotated in here and there but not played as often.

And I actually think Life and End of the Line won't be played very much if at all.

Posted by Trace @ 05/21/2009 04:51 PM EST

It's kind of nice to hear a different song like Life instead of Creep. as the 1st song. I love Creep., but man, it's been played 1st too long with the exception of this tour...

Please give us some more of The Small Hours. I love the beginning of that song!

Posted by Thingy @ 05/22/2009 12:17 AM EST

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, for some reason other than listening to D. Mag., I've been listening to more of Carpe Diem Baby and Where The Wild Things Are. I'd like to hear some Wild Things, too live.

Posted by Thingy @ 05/22/2009 12:20 AM EST

I actually prefer Creeping Death as a late set or encore song. I think Breadfan and Battery are probably my favorite opening songs. I'm hoping they eventually start rotating songs in both that and the set closing slots.

Oh and I love Where the Wild Things Are. I would love to hear a live version of that.

Posted by Trace @ 05/23/2009 11:53 PM EST

Apparently All Nightmare Long is the latest "radio single" in the US. Heard an edit of it today here in Detroit.

Posted by IS-JD @ 05/24/2009 06:54 PM EST

I think nightmare is the strongest song on the album, and possible the most radio friendly, even though it is probably the heaviest song in the radio circut..

Posted by Yukoner @ 05/25/2009 03:46 PM EST

I'll agree that I think it's one of the strongest songs on the album (and at one time thought it was the strongest, but I waiver a bit on that now)... but, most radio friendly? I dunno about that. It's not the most commercial sounding at all despite a very strong chorus. I find it an agressive song that's way up front and in your face.

But, most radio friendly?? Not with TDTNC, Cyanide or U3 on that album.

Posted by IS-JD @ 05/25/2009 11:30 PM EST

Yeah I suppose you're right about TDTNC and Cyanide, I am actually kinda surprised Cyanide wasn't released as a single

Official Live DVD info. from metallica.com:
Live DVDs. . . In The Works!
5/27/2009

There's been a little chatter here and there about us filming a few shows this summer for potential release on DVD and among the countless internet rumors, these ones are actually true! We thought it would be cool to document a few shows that are unique and sure to be extra memorable for us, and hopefully for you too . . . first up are the three sold out shows in Mexico City, Mexico at Foro Sol on June 4, 6, 7 and later this summer, we also plan to have the cameras rolling at the sold out show in Nimes, France at Arenes de Nimes, the historic Roman amphitheatre where we'll be on July 7.
For any Metallica friends going to these shows, bring your war faces and don't be scared of the cameras!!

As usual, more to come...

Awesome!

Posted by Thingy @ 05/28/2009 12:13 PM EST

I'm looking forward to that. Hopefully they do some special stuff for those shows.

Cyanide was a "radio" single earlier this year. I think outside of TDTNC it's the song from DM I've heard the most on the radio.

Posted by Trace @ 05/28/2009 01:06 PM EST

Hopefully they bring out some rarely played songs for that live DVD. Should be good.

Posted by caspian @ 05/29/2009 02:21 AM EST

I can't wait. I've got some bootleg dvd's, but it's not the same as a well produced package. I wish they did the same as the stones did, release one dvd of each world tour(every 5 years or so).

This will certainly have a very different setlist than cunning stunts, that's for sure.

Seen this? sorry if I double posted it, hadn't been around very often lately.
It's just hilarious and so cheap. The guy seems to be cryin' all the time the "Metallica thing" comes up, but keeps fuelling the fire. The Kirk thing is sooooooooooo cheap it's just classless and reveals a really sad part of his character... Really cheap to tell that in a show. Big disappointment even for a not- Mustaine fan. Just embarassing...
How deep can one fall???

Posted by MORE BEER @ 05/29/2009 07:08 PM EST

well, Mustaine may be a major cry baby, but at least he never made St.Anger. Metallica have fallen further, however that was much shorter lived then Mustaine's downhill slide.

Posted by caspian @ 05/30/2009 04:59 AM EST

He kind of did release St Anger in a way. It was titled RISK.

Posted by metalica78 @ 05/30/2009 03:21 PM EST

I still think Metallica at their worst surpasses Megadeth's best.

Dave's done some amazing things musically... but it's a shame that he can't let go of a band that he was in for just a few months. Sure, he had a hand in what was Metallica, but let it go already.

The amazing turn over rate of Megadeth band members says A LOT and a seems most folks don't see that hypocrisy. It's funny how he's still riding the Metallica coattails 26 years after leaving the band.

Posted by IS-JD @ 05/30/2009 06:20 PM EST

Well... I think when you can't sell records anymore, and the media doesn't spend ample amounts of time on "your band" just being "your band", you have to name drop. Every metal band in every interview. Just look at how many page archives are there for Metallica when you search them in Blabbermouth. Kerry King is guilty too. It seems like every one who's in a metal band could be doing an interview talking about the weather, and then he's gotta have cred and acknowledge old Metallica.

Posted by GREENHELL97 @ 05/31/2009 02:12 PM EST

Picked up the new Cliff bio, To Live Is To Die. I'm not a fan of Joel McIver, in many ways he's a hack... a terrible biographer in my regard. Had hope after reading some material about the book... and once again, McIver fails, and fails hard.

Frankly, the book is worth a read for the Cliff material... (um, duh?) but, again you have to wade through McIver heavy handed, overly opinionated (if not biased, even) slop. This is not a telling of Cliff's life, it's barely a bio by any regards.

McIver takes a buch of folks' quotes and assembles them into not very coherent narrative, heavily filtered and processed by the author's personal feelings.

Sorry; to me, a biography is a telling of someone's life in a narrative form, through fair eyes that do not judge... merely tell the tale. This is a hodge podge or loosely connected series of interviews (or interview bits)...

Now, granted I haven't read the entire book cover to cover. But, I've read enough of it to realize that this is just a poor excuse for journalism. But, as a Metallica nut I'm glad to see some record of Cliff's life... he deserves it, I just wish a better author would've tackled the story.

Posted by IS-JD @ 05/31/2009 03:41 PM EST

JD, I have to agree about McIver. When he wrote his last book about metallica, it was promoted as behind the scenes this and that, more undiclosed info about cliff's death, the "true" reasons behind metallica's stylistic shift. That book amounted to toilet paper. He praised the early stuff, and pretty much slammed everything from TBA onward. That opinion is fine, but I can get that on the blabbermouth boards. Just say you are purely a thrash metal fan and leave it at that.

As far as mustaine goes, I remember that comment about kirk's girl, and this supposedly occured after his "born again" status. I love a lot of Dave's music, but I summarize the comparisons like this:

Metallica's best is better than Dave's best.

Metallica's worst is not as bad as Dave's worst.

Risk is easily, by a long shot, the worst release by the two bands.

Furthermore, metallica own up to whatever choices they have made. Dave likes to blame other people for: Youthanasia(he blamed the producer harshly for this very good album), Cryptic Writings and Risk(blamed Junior and Friedman for wanting to make pop records). C'mon Dave, you are megadeth. There is noone to points fingers at.

Posted by kurt @ 06/01/2009 08:55 AM EST

It always crawls up my ass how Dave is considered more metal and metallica are sellouts.

Who made the first video?(not that it makes you a sellout)

Who did all the MTV stuff(rock the vote?)

Who made wrestling songs and appearances?

Dave sold out to mass media LONG before metallica, yet metallica are bashed for being sellouts. Nonsense.

Posted by kurt @ 06/01/2009 09:07 AM EST

The funny thing is he always picks the "weak" spots out. Back in '82 'twas mainly James he had fights with within the band and I remember back in the day he didn't slam single persons, but the whole band. The only thing I remember as far as slamming individuals is concerned that he repeatedly emphasized how shy/uncertain JAMES was, and that JAMES became what he now is by copying Daves' style...*cough, cough*
Now that Lars is the official scapegoat for everything on Blabbercow and Kirk with his calm nature, he picks them to unload his pile of blabber shit there.
And true, the last Megadeth Album that I can listen to as a whole is "Cryptic Writings", not Metal, but good songs, everything after that let me down badly.
Saludos!

I thought UA was OK. Had some alright moments, anyway.

I prefer Risk to St.Anger, though I will happily concede that Crush 'Em is possibly the worst song written by anyone, ever.

JD, while I would disagree that an author has to be unbiased, they at least need to back up that bias with some sort of references, facts, etc. Iver doesn't. I've read that bio too and it's absolute rubbish.

Posted by caspian @ 06/02/2009 09:54 AM EST

JD...i was about to buy to live is to die off amazon last night, but i decided to wait a bit more, cause i know McIver aint that good of a writer. I'll pro end up buying the book anyway. Regarding the Megadeth-metallica issues its funny how dave's career has been a metallica follow up...Metallica releases and justice for all (their most technical album) and mustaine releases Rust in peace (coincidence?) Metallica releases the black album, megadeth releases countdown to extinction (a more polished sounding album, not technical at all, compared to rust in peace) Metallica releases the loads, megadeth releases cryptic writings and risk (even getting a pop producer to polish even more their songs [and that's not selling out]) Metallica releases St. Anger (highly anticipated comeback to metal [which was in a way, but a totally different one]) and megadeth goes back to metal [idk the name of their last 2 albums] i dont know about you guys but i see a pattern...dont get me wrong, i like megadeth, its just Dave that bothers me

Blabbermouth had part of an interview James did with Classic Rock magazine. Pretty revealing.

They asked him about mustaine, and he basically just said he had to go because he had the same drive/ambition traits as he and lars, essentially too many cooks in the kitchen. That's not really new news, other than James rarely addresses the topic.

They asked him about the load period, particularly the photo shoots and stuff. He said he was really uncomfortable with a lot of that stuff, and a lot of the "image" stuff around that period was driven by lars and kirk.

Pretty interesting. I guess the mag will be out soon, but the clips on blabbermouth were from a 2-3 days ago if you guys wanna check it out.

JD, sorry to say it, but the Wings looked old tonite...Pittsbug just wanted the cu more.

...the cup more. lol!

Posted by EET FUK @ 06/12/2009 11:33 PM EST

They didn't allow Pittsburgh a shot in the 3rd period. They matched well against the Pens, just couldn't get the puck behind Fluery. Old? I don't think they looked old, they looked beat up.

BTW, one of the Pens goals came on a blown icing call. Why not call the icing... didn't make sense. This on top the totally embarassing officiating... Malkin should've been suspended games ago (ya know, when the Pens went after the Wings with goon tactics when they were blown out 5-0).

My biggest fault with the Pens winning, is Crosby's feeling of entitlement. He comes off as if he feels he deserves that Cup. Bettman and the NHL annointed him and basically handed him the championship... he didn't even have the class to get in the handshake line up.

Posted by IS-JD @ 06/13/2009 08:49 AM EST

I live in Pittsburgh, not a big Crosby fan. He should have shaken hands. Yes he whines too much (though he's gotten better).

I'm sorry to hear about blown icing calls and suspensions that didn't happen though (same could be said about Ovechkin on Gonchar in round 2 or Pens Matt Cooke on some Hurricane in east finals). I didn't whine about what I thought was medicore officiating last season. The Wings were a better team. I believe the Wings are still a better team, but blown icing calls and all that had nothing to do with their lack of cohesion in periods 1 and 2. Give the Pens some credit for beating the champs in their building. I respectfully disagree there.

Luckily they only play 3 periods because they threw everything they had at us in the 3rd. Pens-Wings in the finals again next year...write it down. WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

and back to what pat said earlier...who's going to open on the fall tour? anyone going to be in charlottsville, va?? i will.

Posted by missing1inside @ 06/13/2009 02:27 PM EST

I think Crosby not shaking hands was just him getting caught up in the moment, I mean he's 21 years old and he just captained a stanley cup team, I'd forget a few courtisies as well probably, and he did skate over to finish his handshakes but most of them were off the ice. The Pens came out flying and nabbed that early lead and made very little mistakes afterwards. And howabout that save with 2.2 seconds! On a Metal note, I am checking out the Megadeth Slayer show, wish I was going to a 'tallica gig but this one should rock pretty good. Machine Head opens also!

Posted by Yukoner @ 06/13/2009 09:12 PM EST

The officiating was brutal throughout the entire playoffs, not just the finals.

Posted by EET FUK @ 06/13/2009 11:18 PM EST

I totally agree with you eet fuk, but I think it comes down to how you want the games ref'd. Personally, I have watched hockey for over 20 years, yet I prefer the "new" interpretation (post lock out) of the rules that you'd see during the regular season.

The playoffs unfortunately (imo) went back to the "old" style of play. The main thing I can say, is that I feel this year they at least applied those rules evenly, and every team had a chance to adapt.

If any of you have ever been to Pittsburgh, you probably know the Southside is the bar capital of town...the Pens took the cup out for a few drinks, view pics below

Haha good one JD. Make fun of Crosby all you want, but not Malkin ok? If you do that, I'll stop gloating that the mighty Wings blew it in their own barn...wooo! Just kidding man...my guys need to get a few more before I talk shit. But you gotta get 1, before you get 2...

Posted by missing1inside @ 06/14/2009 09:01 PM EST

I can't take credit for that... saw it another site and laughed about it. I'll definitely give you Malkin over Crosby... I think I'd take just about anyone over Crosby. There's a feeling I get about the kid like he feels he deserves some things... I don't like that Betttman has annoited him as the golden child and frankly I don't like him... whether it's the little slash he gave Maltby AFTER game 1, the way he nonchalantly admitted it at the press conference (no suspension, either) or the silly grimace he made when he hoisted the Cup... sorry, maybed I'm bitter but, he didn't look like a poster boy or a champion with that face he made with the Cup above his head.

It's been a gloomy weekend for me after that game Friday night... just gloomy.

There's been some more chatter about Crosby's handshake snub. Apparently, he took his sweet ass time getting to the line up and only shook hands with a few Wings... Draper was pretty pissed off about that, especially Crosby snubbing Lidstrom. I think it's definite poor sportsmanship to leave someone like Niklas Lidstrom hanging like that. I'm also not realy happy that they chose a Pirates game where they were playing the Tigers to bring out the Cup... that seemed a little low to me as well - especially seeing as Mike Illitch owns both the Tigers and the Wings.

But, I've been lucky enough to celebrate 4 Cups with the Wings and I don't wanna sound like a whiner... the Wings lost, for many reasons - but mostly because Pittsburgh seemed to want it more at times. I've also been lucky enough to raise Lord Stanley's Cup over my head and kiss it, although I was simply very lucky to do that, as I really didn't earn it.

Posted by IS-JD @ 06/14/2009 11:41 PM EST

Crosby is a douche bag plain and simple. I am in no way saying that he is not a good player but his actions and the way he carries himself on the ice leaves a lot to be disired. What he did was completely disrespectful to the sport and its traditions that span more years then Crosby has even been on this earth. I have never seen a hockey player complain so much to the ref and complain even more when someone takes the body to him. I remember when Ovechkin hit crosby along the boards and knocked him down - he immediately went running over to the ref to complain about a clean hit and then told the media afterwards that Ovechkin put a dirty hit on him. On the ice after the hit Ovie basically told him "this is hockey". The NHL is missing out on not promoting the most exciting player on the ice to watch - he scores big, passes, HITS like a frieght train, is one of the fastest skaters in the league along with one of the hardest shots and is always making the highlight reels - he may not have a pretty face but he is everything a hockey player should be. I don't think many people who know hockey would argue with me when I say Alexander Ovechkin is the superior player when it comes to comparing the two and the one who should be the face of the NHL.

Posted by Cooper @ 06/15/2009 04:21 PM EST

JD, again I'm not a Sid supporter, but I do think he can't win for trying. For example the Maltby slash...if Max Talbot does that, it's him being a hockey player. Sid does it, he's a baby. If he doesn't do that, he's a baby too because he won't stand up for himself. I'm just saying though, I really do think he whines too much, and frankly until Guerin got here he was an absolute abortion of a captain. Regardless of what the players though of Therrien, the captain's job is to make sure they didn't quit. They quit, so his "C" is tainted in my eyes.

The Pirate thing literally came about overnight at the Pens request for reasons I don't know. The Buccos gladly accepted and said they would have done it themselves in about 3 weeks. That's being a bit oversensitive though, if 20% unemployment hasn't brought Detroit to it's knees, you expect me to believe a Pirates game is the straw that broke their back? Hardly. Osama bin Laden could throw out the first pitch at a Pirates game, and chances are nobody would notice...

Cooper, Ovie is a very exciting player...but he needs to win in the playoffs to make the case he is a superior player. If/when he does that, the promotion will have to follow. I'm not saying, it shouldn't already be there...but face it, hockey is run by dolts. It's the most exciting sport in my opiniopn, yet they barely get noticed. Whose fault is that? They have no one to blame but themselves. They say that guys like Malkin and Ovechkin won't sell because they aren't American and don't speak english as their first language...funny, that doesn't seem to hold the NBA back with guys like Dirk Nowitski, Hedo Torkolu, or Pao Gasol. Oh, I forgot...those guys must be from Texas or something. Believe me, I have respect for him (even after the Gonchar hit) because he plays hard and doesn't whine like a sissy. I'd much rather see him and Malkin go at it as the hyped match up than Crosby and him. Every game of the Caps series I didn't have tickets for, I spent at a bar here and everyone would get so upset when the score would toggle back and forth. I was like, what the hell is wrong with you people...yeah I don't want the Pens to lose but we're playing the best goal scorer and its like 2 heavyweights trading punches...regardless of how that series turned out I got my money's worth.

The Ottawa, Canada show has been re-scheduled to Nov 3rd.(I am going to this one).

For Metallica to move a concert date, it would have to be for a very good and big reason.
Rumours are flying that they will be playing with Megadeth and Slayer.

Posted by manguy @ 06/16/2009 08:30 AM EST

I didn't way it brought Detroit to it's knees... not even close. I mentioned that it was a bit of a low blow seeing as they decided to do this as the Pirates were playing the Tigers and Mike Illitch owns both teams.

It's a minor thing but a lil low in my eyes nonetheless.

I'm hearing Metallica might be playing Voodoo Fest down in New Orleans, which is why the Ottawa gig got moved back.

JD - Would you mind sharing the story of kissing the cup? That's awesome, what year and how did it take place?

Posted by SRW @ 06/18/2009 03:28 AM EST

During the Wings first (or second?) Cup win of the modern era, I worked at City Hall of the city I now work as a firefighter as now - this was not a political job. Someone pulled some strings with the Wings and arranged for some big celebration type thing in front of City Hall... and a stage was set up and all the political types were there... and then the Cup came.

I was one of a few that was able to hoist her over my head and plant a kiss on it. Most folks just got to sit next to it... unfortunately, my neighbor could not figure out how to work my camera. I do have pics of my neighbors with the Cup as well as my uncle and cousin -- and the Cup with the firefighters and the engine (which if you look you might find on our website, under desktops).

Felt like I was watching the Russian awards last night.

Ovechkin, Malkin and Datsyuk show.
Crosby wasn't even there I don't think. Douche

Posted by manguy @ 06/19/2009 08:20 AM EST

Being from boston, I obviously pull for the bruins guys. But it rings pretty hollow to get three awards and only make it as far as they did in the playoffs.

Posted by kurt @ 06/19/2009 09:19 AM EST

kurt - A cup is won by a team and not by any individual.
The caps do not need much at this point to get over the hump. The caps AHL team won the Calder Cup this year and the caps ECHL team won it all as well - so the future is very bright to say the least.
Game 7 against the Pens could have gone either way so I completely disagree with the hollow statement since this is not the first time Ovechkin has won these awards and like I said before the cup is not won by a single player.
Crosby has a cup with his team but as an individual compared to Ovechkin - crosby is not even close.

Posted by Cooper @ 06/19/2009 03:28 PM EST

Cooper, I think you missed my point. I feel the Bruins winning three awards was hollow since the team didn't follow through and at least make it to the finals.

Actually, I think hockey is the only sport that can have a series dominated completely by one person. That being the goalie. I've seem teams that were outplayed overall, but their goalie stood on his head and the lesser team won.

Posted by mightymurck @ 06/21/2009 11:16 PM EST

Ashes of the Wake is my personal favorite...As the Palces Burn a close 2nd. Wrath and Sacrament have their moments but don't live up to the first 2 in my very humble opinion. They are a growly vocal band...so if you aren't down with that, you're not gonna like them bottom line. If you are down with that...they are pretty f'n brutal.

My song recommends: As the Palaces Burn, 11th Hour, Vigil, Laid to Rest, Now You've Got Something to Die For, Omerta, Break You, Redneck, Descending (probably my fave). Those are all off the first three, I'm not too familiar with Wrath's songs yet.

How long of a drive do you have? It's about 4 or 5 from Pittsburgh. I'm going with a few buddies that aren't huge in to Metal...one guy is pretty much just in for the trip because he went to VT and wants to "take me south of the Mason-Dixon"...damn grits scare me haha.

Posted by missing1inside @ 06/21/2009 11:32 PM EST

by the way, i'm an idiot...i'm guessing you have about a 4 hour drive based on the fact you stated you have a 4 drive...solid. Do you have a hotel? We got a room at the econolodge that appears to be literally a stone's throw from the venue...score one for not getting a DUI that night. Ashame I bought parking before we booked that...

Posted by Cooper @ 06/22/2009 12:15 AM EST

Mightymurck: The best way to start with LoG is to never listen to anything they've done. Terrible band.

I do understand that Metallica are probably better off if they get a fairly well known support band, btu seeing as 99.9% of mainstream metal is rubbish, would it kill them to actually, you know, support the underground? Would it kill them to get some obscure band that's actually worthy of exposure and get them on tour?

Here's hoping we'll see more interesting (or at least a better) bands in the future. Granted, it's better then LP and LB, but not by a lot.

Posted by caspian @ 06/22/2009 04:11 AM EST

I too am diappointed with LOG as the opening band selection. Party because I already saw them open for Slayer once and was not impressed.

Was hoping for Machine Head, never seen them and they rip it live.

Posted by manguy @ 06/22/2009 08:36 AM EST

Well, I love LOG and I would have prefferred them to machine head when I saw them in january.

Clearly, if you don't like the growling vocals, those guys ain't for you. But I think Randy Blythe is the best of those guys out there, he can actually growl in many different tones and pitches.

Palaces, Wake and Sacrament are their best IMO. Lots of good stuff on wrath too. I think the Bloodletting(burn the priest) and New American Gospel tunes sound better live than on record.

As far as "underground" bands go, who do you want them to take? LOG may have sold a fair amount of records, but they sure as hell aren't mainstream.

Posted by kurt @ 06/22/2009 09:29 AM EST

Not mainstream in terms of MTV and the like, but they're certainly one of the bigger metal bands around. And come on Manguy: Machine Head? Are you serious? Congrats on naming a band even worse then LoG.

Random suggested bands: Holy Moses (amazing old school thrash who's comeback record is great). Manowar (particularly in America), Blind Guardian, Electric Wizard, Warhammer, Lord Weird Slough Feg (definitely a band deserving of exposure), High on Fire.

Wow Caspian, so you think you are king of knowing what bands are better then others?
Geez, its an opinion, we all have them and are entitled to them.

Would you say that to Hetfield's face? Doubt it. I am pretty sure he likes Machine Head more than LOG also.

Get over yourself bud.

Posted by manguy @ 06/23/2009 08:30 AM EST

Yeah, after all, how dare we say some bands are better or worse then others! Having (and giving)opinions is a great thing, and I don't see what's so wrong with mentioning them.

It's pretty unlikely I'd spend the typical thirty seconds of contact with Hetfield to tell him that Machine Head sucked. I'd have no problem saying it to his face though, it just wouldn't be my top priority.

Instead of me getting over myself, perhaps you should reevaluate your music choices and stop listening to excruciatingly bad music.

Posted by caspian @ 06/23/2009 11:48 PM EST

Hmm, so my choices are: continue this pointless argument with someone as royally stubborn and inflated as you are or drop it.

It is one thing to have an opinion, but when you colour it with inflammatory language, you cross the line.
THat is what you did and if you can't see that, tsk tsk.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson. I know he is a total opposite style of music then most of us listen to in here, but like Metallica, he is the best at the genre in which he sings. He made pop what it is today, and as an artist, I have the upmost respect for him. The entertainment industry lost a music icon. R.I.P.

Nice post, Robert. Couldn't agree more. Whenever one of his songs comes on at a club or a wedding, people go crazy. It's a testament to how great his music was that people could just see through all that controversy. And don't forget, Metallica jammed on "Beat it" during the 2003 VMAs.

But I have a hard time accepting the coverage of his death solely focusing on his music. He diddled kids, and bought his way out of it. That's unforgiveable.

Maybe I read it wrong but I think you actually get a real DVD with bonus features and the works it just won't be sold in stores outside of France. French music stores or Metallica.com to order it. Or am I totally reading that article wrong? And the concert will be streamed for free for 4 days online...

I agree, I've never heard of a DVD meaning an online download. As for stores outside of France it sounds almost as if regardless of where you live, it just won't be sold in stores, you'd have to order the DVD online.
