04/04/2009 Entry: "TONIGHT!"
Tonight Metallica joins the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. Who will be there? Apparently a lot of the band's friends dating back to the begining. Jason Newsted returns for a couple songs along with Rob on bass guitar, and it's said that Ray Burton, Cliff's father will join the band onstage to represent his son. Who else is there? Folks spotted in Cleveland include Anthrax, Flea, Harald Oimoen, Brian Slagel...
Fuse TV will broadcast on cable television on on their website.

I appreciate the vid links guys but they all have this little screen covering the middle of the major screen showing everything. Just gonna wait and hopefully download a good quality version of the whole show.

That was pretty cool. It was great to see Jason and awesome at the ovation he and everyone else got.
The last jam was killer too with Page, Beck, Flea and Jason.

First off, I HATED Fuse's coverage- way too many commercials, strange edits and worst of all- it wasn't even live despite that little "live" trademark in the corner of the screen.
That said, it was indeed a very cool night. Flea's induction was simply outstanding. Great choice as a presenter. I loved seeing Cliff's father speak (and his mother crying in the audience proved to be one of the most emotional moments of the night). All the band members were very classy with their speeches. It was great seeing their families. Loved that they all mentioned the fans and also liked James pimping some other bands for induction. I was surprised to not see Dave mentioned by name, although James did mention all other former members of the band.
As for the five-man Metallica? There seemed to be some sound issues during Puppets, but both songs rocked. And it was just a blast to see Jason playing with them again. Loved seeing the bass players sharing a mic.
The finale performance of Train Kept a Rollin' with Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Ronnie Wood, Joe Perry, Flea and the five-man Metallica may have been the highlight of the night. That was in a word- awesome.

I have some Megadeth CDs and like some of their music, but I'm tired of hearing Mustaine cry all the time. As we all know, heck, Jason was in the band for 14 years and we don't hear him whining.
It was cool seeing Jason and Rob jamming together. Flea gave a great speech, along with all of them. It was pretty cool to watch them perform Master and Sandman, but I really liked Train Kept A Rollin'. Pretty good show.

You could almost tell that Jason was trying to show "this is what you are missing". Particularily the backing vocals.
Its almost like you could see James looking over at him, like "man that feels and sounds good!"

I'd take Rob over Jason any day of the week. Not saying I don't like Jason. Seems like a cool shit, but Rob just brings a whole new level to Metallica that Jason could not of brought.
What has Jason done since he left Metallica???

I had hoped Jason would form a new band where he would front it. I dont know what song writing abilities he has, but in some of those old Live Shit vids and stuff on youtube where Jason sings whole songs he sounds pretty awesome.

Jason has not done anything since leaving Metallica as far as I know. But what does that have to do with playing with the band? I just think it's a better vibe with Jason. I am not taking anything away from Rob, you can argue that he's better than Jason at playing bass. I just think Jason fits better.
Posted by Johnny @ 04/06/2009 07:22 PM EST

|
|
Problem with Jason was Jason had an opinion. Ultimately, that wasn't a good thing. I believe that part of the reason that James and Lars got so far apart was because they had to pay attention to Jason's bitching and their own, instead of just focusing on fighting with each other. "I want more guitar and faster." "I want more drums and laid back grooves." "I want to write crap like Wild Things Are and bitch about album covers." Just too many opinions. Kirk and Robert are both great musicians who put their ideas in and then let the other two fight over how to use them. It's a better dynamic, in my opinion, which is the opinion of someone who isn't there and has no actual basis for believing this to be true, except that they seem to get along better now.

Jason has better backing vocals. Rob makes the band play 10 times better as a group in their current state (post black album tour). Its the move that had to happen to push the band to make Death Magnetic. I do like Jason but I agree there's only (and barely) enough room for James & Lars egos in the band.
Posted by marcus @ 04/07/2009 10:15 AM EST

I think that they should have Rob AND Jason.
Jason's vocals are sooooo much better, and it gives James' voice a break. Rob has the attitude.
Listening to the mix of the R&R performance, the two bass guitars sound awesome!

Marcus, I thought Jason made the band play good too all those years. I saw Metallica 9 times during the 1990s, every show was awesome. I've seen them with Rob twice and they are still awesome. I don't think they are any better or worse if Rob or Jason is playing bass. I think the band HAD to make a record like Death Magnetic because St. Anger was so terrible. It was Rick Rubin who helped get them back on track, not Rob. If Jason was playing on DM, how much different would the sound have been? If James wasn't being an asshole and letting Jason have some creative input back in the '90s, what kind of sound would they have had? Would St. Anger sounded like it did? I think I am so partial to Jason because that is my Metallica - James, Jason, Kirk, and Lars. I became a fan when I first heard One in 1989. I was crushed when he left seven years ago.

Obviously Jason is better at backing vocals. But Cliff wasn't much on the backing vocals either. Rob all around makes the band play a bit more like when Cliff was still around.
I thought Jason was great every time I saw him play. However, creatively I think Rob adds more to the band. Maybe it is due to the fact that Lars and James are more receptive to it now. But bottom line, Jason got three writing credits over 4 studio albums plus 3 other tracks.
I thought having both of them play was awesome. Let the tired old bickering take a back seat, if not forever, than at least one weekend.
I thought that hug James gave Lars said alot about where the two of them are these days(personally speaking).
Finally, I thought it was awesome that James mentioned all the other bands that should be being discussed for the HOF.
Only complaint: When mentioning all members of the past, it wouldn't have hurt to mention the whiny Mr. Mustaine.
And what the hell was that sound glitch in MOP?
Posted by kurt @ 04/07/2009 01:52 PM EST

|
|
Jason only got 3 writing credits over 4 studio albums because James was such a close minded dick. James always had to lay down the bass line for Jason to follow. After Cliff died, and the auditions were held, out of all those bass players they picked Newstead. There must have been something about his style that they liked.
Posted by Johnny @ 04/07/2009 04:06 PM EST

|
|
It might help if I make my point, right? So my point is, I think Death Magnetic would've been just as good with Newstead as it is with Rob. It was Rick Rubin who got the band in the right place to make such a good CD. I am sure Rob's input definitley helped it be a success. I guess we will never truly know what Jason could have contributed creatively to Metallica.

I thought Jason wanted more "Metal" in Metallica and was frustrated with the direction? If so, why did he go out and make the music that was on Echobrain? I bought that CD because Jason was on it and I wanted to hear what he created. I also bought Voivod because of Jason. To be honest, I couldn't handle the stuff from Voivod and liked the Echobrain stuff more. I guess it doesn't matter now. The past is just that...Anyway, I've seen them live with both Jason and Rob numerous times and still like them. As far as musicianship (playing), I feel Rob is a lot better. As we know, he's great on Flamenco guitar, too.
As far as Mustaine, I'm sure we'll hear him whining about something Metallica/RRHOF related. And like Lars said, if Mustaine hadn't been kicked out, there probably wouldn't be a Megadeth.

I loved Flea's comments on how Metallica took the fast track to commercial success, putting in a 5 minute bass solo in their record. I loved all the speeches but I was most impressed with James' speech, he looked pretty emotional, thanking LArs at the end was a big moment too. I think they are the greatest band America ever produced and easily the top 5 the world ever had.

GO OILERS.... yeah.... right.... maybe next season.. or maybe 5 seasons from now... fuck! I wonder when Metallica will release another b-sides type disc, they'll probably leak them out on the internet or something. I am kind of disappointed with the way their singles have been, just live tracks attatched you can already download on livemetallica, they should be covers and unreleased songs and demos I think

I doubt we'll see the unreleased songs, other than Shine. I seem to remember that during the Grohl interview they said they stole the good riffs out of the other songs to assemble the songs on DM. So there's not much left to work with. It's interesting that Shine didn't find it's way into something, anything. Special download for GH-Met or something.

So here is a Metallica and Hockey tidbit...Some of you may remember that I ran into Mike Green and Alex Ovechkin at the Jan 15 show here in DC. Well the other day I was visiting the caps practice facility during my lunch break from work and I gave Mike Green the audio version of the Metallica Concert. He was very happy and thanked me several times for it. He also said he was going to listen to it on his way home and before the game that night. Thats what he did, he popped the CD into his stereo (White lambo) and pulled away with Metallica cranked! He had 3 points that night including a goal!

I remember seeing james and lars on tv at the Sharks game playoff game in '94. I know james is into hockey, he met jagr and jagr gave him some stuff back in 95/96. It's crazy that SJ is down 2-0 against Anaheim. I thought that SJ would face Detroit in the west finals, but not sure right now. I'm a Devils fan from NY. I really hope that we get past Carolina, we've ha d a lotta trouble with them in the past. Cooper, I was so happy to see the Rangers fall to the caps last night. I texted both my brothers(ranger fans) and pissed them off throughout the game. Somehow it seems that Metallica goes better with hockey than any other sport. I know football comes close, but I always think that the NHL's soundtrack should consist of Metallica all the time. I can't believe that the NHL isn't using BBS as theire playoff song. Am I crazy or does that song kinda resembles the NHL playoffs? oh....LET'S GO DEVILS!!!

MONSTER - yeah its been a good series so far. The caps finally started playing some playoff hockey and really took it to the rangers. Avery cost his team but the fans love him for it...I don't get it. He is such a tool and I love that the caps just goaded him into making more stupid penalties. I now believe that our young Russian netminder is the real deal...never cared for Jose too much.

It is pretty appropriate, there are so many good Metallica songs fit for hockey, Seek and Destroy, Battery, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Whiplash, All Nightmare Long, BBS, Sandman, Fuel, a bunch more.. of course lyrically some of them dont but those kller riffs would make anyone want to drop the gloves! You're absolutely right Mark. Avery is a piece of shit and doesn't belong on the ice. He is an asshole and i'm sure is driving his coach and his teammates crazy. A lot of his old teammates in Dallas couldn't stand him and were happy for him to leave. I think sooner or later it will happen to the Strangers. Ever since he pulled that shit last year with Brodeur and the Devils I couldn't stand looking at his face. Metallica is the perfect music for any hockey game. I've heard Sandman a million times, Sad, Bells, Battery, Seek, Fuel, creeping, memory and a bunch others at the devils ganmes and hearing it on tv watching other teams. I remember when the NHL had nothing else matters as their playoff song. With a lotta players getiing beat up and cut, i think it would be cool to show some big hits and some bleeding with "show your scars" in the background. Also I was too late to get tix for MSG in November. Anyone get tickets for those shows?

They have really rekindled my interest in hockey.
