03/10/2009 Entry: "JAMES ILL, SHOW CANCELED"

From Metallica.com:

Tonight's second show in Stockholm has been cancelled due to James falling ill and receiving medical attention at the hospital. The show WILL be rescheduled sometime this spring, so keep watching this space for more details. We apologize to all our fans who have travelled from near and far and we look forward to coming back soon.

That's the word from the official site. Other reports state that James has been released from the hospital (and show him leaving the hospital) and has returned to the US as this leg of the tour has taken a scheduled break. Speculation has run rampant with much of it centered on James having the stomach flu or food poisoning (one site even posted his alleged menu from an Indian restaurant), spokesperson Carolina Satterwell called it a "stomach bug".

UPDATE:
From Metallica.com:

Hey there,
James here, alive, at about 80% but getting better. I want to say sorry for missing the second Stockholm gig on Sunday due to illness. The cause/diagnosis at the hospital was narrowed down to either a 24hr virus or a bad oyster...yes, hate to admit, an oyster could have taken me down.

I acknowledge and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused fans who had travelled near and far for the show. I had done everything possible to make it, and was at the point of falling if I stood up. On a lighter note since my illness, the support band 'Swedish Oyster Cult' will be thrown off the tour. More Cowbell?...More barf bagz!!

Thanx for your understanding and support. It's not without notice from the whole 'Tallica Touring Family.

With Love and Respect,
James 'papa het'

Glad to hear he's feeling better. It was funny to make that "more cowbell" reference. I've had some bad bad oysters and clams before and I know how it feels...fells like you're dying.

I wanted to listen to some of Metallica's Bridge benefit again today (mainly All W/in My Hands) and noticed that the riff at 43 seconds on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8iy7Mpy5F4 reminds me of The Day That Never comes. It sounds a little faster on the Day, but I'm guessing it started from there. Pretty cool. Hard to believe that that performance was almost a year and a half ago.

Yeah Thingy I totally hear it now, I am still surprised they did Only Happy When It Rains... and impressed they did Brothers in Arms, which to me, is one of the finest written songs ever recorded.

yea, it is just like ktulu or no leaf clover also, it seems to be a comfort shape on the neck for james. plus it is really easy to match other guitars to that particular shape being that it is a simple major to minor progression

All within my hands at the Bridge Benefit was my favorite song they played. I mean they were awesome, even Garbage's song, but I was blown away how they can re-tool an awesome song and make it even better acoustic. Also, anyone see my noy Martin ties the most wins record last night?!! Jope he breaks it on St. Patty's day on home ice...that would be an awesome birthday gift for me.

It was pretty cool to see him do it in front of Roy, near his home town.

Encycmet is hinting a secreet gig in Texas for the guitar hero release

Posted by Yukoner @ 03/17/2009 01:05 AM EST

Yeah, got an email from metclub last week about that. from the way the email was worded it sounds like the boys are gonna play a bit of a show too.

Posted by Mark @ 03/17/2009 06:52 PM EST

Yeah, the rumor that I've seen going around is that they'll do a gig at South by Southwest in Austin. Friday is the day of the rumored gig.

Well, I live in Austin and would love to go.
Too bad I'm no longer in the MetClub...
Does anyone know if I would be able to attend if I joined today?

Please disregard my previous comment.
It seems there was a drawing and it's already over.

Bummer...

Looks like Broken, Beat & Scarred will be the next single (and video).

Flea will be inducting the boys into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Guitar hero secret gig played and no sandman for only like the 2nd time ever!

Posted by Mark @ 03/21/2009 03:35 PM EST

No Sandman? Here's hoping that set list modification becomes more commonplace. Metallica must be sick of playing that song, and I imagine most people are completely sick of hearing it.

Posted by caspian @ 03/22/2009 04:01 AM EST

No joke. I love the idea. Hell replace it with King Nothing. The progression is similar. (don't flame me, I'm just saying)

Posted by JoeCL @ 03/22/2009 01:17 PM EST

Keep in mind, it wasn't a full set. They only played 13 (as opposed to the normal 18) songs.

Posted by Trace @ 03/22/2009 05:17 PM EST

Flea is kind of a surprise but it's pretty cool, it wont be long till the 'Peppers are inducted in the RRHOF I am sure.

Posted by Yukoner @ 03/22/2009 05:48 PM EST

RHCP were eligible for '08, as well. Pretty sure their debut was done in 1983.

Posted by caspian @ 03/22/2009 08:47 PM EST

Fred Savage has been Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich in descise.

Posted by Bond @ 03/22/2009 09:40 PM EST

Yeah I saw that Family Guy episode too Bond. Too funny--too bad they didn't show Lars!

This made me chuckle a little..

Breaking News Buddies....

KIRK HAMMETT Confirms JASON NEWSTED Will Perform With METALLICA At ROCK HALL Induction - Mar. 25, 2009
METALLICA is less than two weeks away from its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the band has confirmed that former bassist Jason Newsted will attend the ceremony. Guitarist Kirk Hammett also told The Pulse of Radio that Newsted will perform with the group at the event as well. "Jason Newsted will be there, and he will be playing with us at one point," he said. "We went as a band when BLACK SABBATH was being inducted, and at that time BLONDIE was also being inducted that night. And there was so many politics and so much drama that, you know, we collectively said to each other, 'We don't want any of that,' because it kind of, it puts a really bad, sour note on the whole celebration itself."

Hammett also told The Pulse of Radio that the band is in the midst of deciding what songs it will play at the ceremony.

The Hall of Fame induction will take place on April 4 at the Hall's Public Auditorium in Cleveland. METALLICA will be inducted by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea.
