12/14/2008 Entry: "BANDitems"

As you should know, Tony Smith was the originator of the MetClub and Metallica's tour manager, personal assistant, jack of all trades for years and years. What can we say? Without Tony, there is no Inter Sandman! (and probably not Metallica.com or MetOnTour.com as we know them)... anyone see that nice little bit in Metal Edge where he interviewed Tony? Nice touch. Anyhow, Tony's been a great a friend to Inter Sandman, and we're happy to give him a little plug:
From BANDitems:

You better watch out, better not pout... I'll tell you why: BANDitems has more swag in eBay! An amazing set of items from the Black Album tour: a black mock turtleneck, a Surf Team sweatshirt or a itineray! Not enough? What about Metallica's first CD-ROM? Or guitar pics? Need more, ok... an James Hetfield ESP guitar? check all these items out now on eBay!

Great find, Nick... I added the link. Wonder why James is playing that new style ESP Explorer thingy??

cool! too bad i dont play video games...damn!

Posted by xino @ 12/15/2008 11:41 AM EST

The new style ESP Explorer is UUUUGLYYY. The reason Hetfield is shown using it in th GH article probably has something to with Gibson suing ESP over the explorer design. I think Hetfield was shown with a variation of the new style explorer in the Simpsons cameo as well.

make sure everybody clicks on the link and votes Death Magnetic for best album of 2008!

I was just going to say the same thing EET FUK. That is why all his new custom EPS's aren't the old explorer look anymore. Sucks! Not a fan of the new version as much.

Gibson really need to stop suing other companies other their shapes, it's really starting to get irritating. I've got a Les Paul, but perhaps from now on I'll be sure to buy non-Gibson guitars.

Posted by caspian @ 12/15/2008 07:22 PM EST

Heh, I loved Lars' comments in that Blender Article.

"We have the No. 1 haters in the world. I'll put our haters up against any band's. Fuck you and your fucking entry-level haters! Ours fucking rule!"

Posted by caspian @ 12/15/2008 07:23 PM EST

I like that comment too. It is so true, everyone bags on MetallicA, but yet they do have every album, and go to the shows. Look at blabbermouth for example. All those people talk shit like they hate MetallicA so much, but yet they have to read the article to post. Obviously they have some reason to waste their time reading up on a band that they hate. I think they talk shit because its "the cool thing to do" but inside, they love MetallicA.

Posted by Robert @ 12/15/2008 09:36 PM EST

When you have people who love Metallica so much, you will have just as many who hate them so much. IN many cases, its the same people. There is such a visceral attachment to this band, its unreal.

Wow, all that talk of Kirk saying "he doesnt know if its real or not" on the video was just a set up. That was brilliant, in its own way. He had us all dieing to see what this fotage was. Very good job on the video, and that youtube thing with Kirk.

Anyone here from so cali? If so, I am going to the show at the forum tomorrow night, and I have an extra ticket. If anyone wants to go, I will give it away. I would rather give it away then let it go to waste. Also, does anyone know of anywhere around the forum where parking might be a little cheaper. $25 is a little high. Anyway, if interested, email me at RobertW1324@gmail.com Thanks.

i know its out of context but fuck i need to vent...i've been struggling with my neighbors for the last couple of weeks, first off all i live in a loft in NYC and sadly the walls between apts are really thin, so my neighbors have been cracking music every single day for the last 2 weeks, weekdays until 1 or 2 in the morning and even though we knock on the walls and their door they never answer...fuck it i know i need to deal with it more maturely (i'll have a serious conversation with them tomorrow) but tonight at around 8pm they started with the noise (really gay music) so i just turned the volume of my stereo (old receiver with huge pioneer speakers) all the way...Pantera is annoying them...fight fire with fire!

Posted by xino @ 12/20/2008 08:49 PM EST

xino, it would be hilarious if you played the 18-minute Seek & Destroy. I have to deal with the same crap every now and then. As a matter of fact, I had to listen to it last night and this morning. I was in bed, watching Survivorman after midnight, and the "lady" upstairs decided to turn on the vacuum. I played a little D. Magnetic this morning just a little louder level than usual. She's lucky my surround sound isn't hooked up right now.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 12/21/2008 12:15 AM EST

i actually played it! haha i played 3 albums...Pantera live 101 proof, megadeth rust in peace and live shit...

Posted by xino @ 12/21/2008 10:39 AM EST

I think the best way to get back at them xino would to play your music really loud early in the morning and wake those fuckers up! Little 7am metal up your ass for ya...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 12/21/2008 12:50 PM EST

Live 101 Proof is one of my favorite live albums, that shit plays real nice real fuckin loud!! When I want to piss off my landlord Motorhead does a good job for me, I know hearing Hellraiser at 4am on a thursday got me in a pile of shit! haha

Posted by Yukoner @ 12/21/2008 11:34 PM EST

Where I live is on a hill, so the neighbors ground level(and back porch) is level with me and the kids bedrooms(2nd floor). Well, the neighbor was a doctor and got off late at night. She would START cookouts and little wine drinking sessions with a couple other yuppie types at midnight/1/2 in the morning. This was on a regular basis.

So, knowing she sleeps in, I rumaged through the CD collection, pulled out Morbid Angel, cranked it with the speakers in the windows(on repeat) and left for the day.

The little "porch parties" were a little quiter after that.

BTW, it's about the only use I've had for that CD.

Posted by kurt @ 12/22/2008 09:09 AM EST

That's a classic, kurt! Funny you left for the day when it was on repeat. She ever say anything to you about it?

My neighbor was swearing at the kids she was watching on Saturday. She woke me up, so I played Death Magnetic. It's been pretty quite since then...knock on wood. I just hope I don't piss her off too much and she decides to throw bleach or cement (Seinfeld episode) in my laundry, since we have to go to the basement to do it and her washer and dryer are right next to mine.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 12/22/2008 09:46 AM EST

No, face to face she placed nicey nice, and she didn't live there too much longer. She was OK enough in general, just rude as hell about that.

Well, I got plenty of Death Magnetic in this weekend. Roughly four hours of shoveling, and I played the Guitar Hero verion of DM a couple of times. Several subtle differences(minus the obvious regarding S&R).

Posted by Mark @ 12/22/2008 08:24 PM EST

I had a similar situation. I live in a town home, and one day while I was getting home from work, there was 2 cops at my front door saying there was a noise complaint, and that there was loud music comming from our place. This was like 9p.m. and in that complex music needed to be down by 10 p.m. Well it turned out that my girlfriend was playing some lynard skynard, so it was nothing hard and heavy. The music was not even loud, I could not hear it outside. So the next morning I mad sure to face the speakers toward the wall seperating the two town homes, about one foot from the wall, and I blasted "So What" as loud as my stereo can go. The cops were not called, but I am sure they got the point.

Posted by Robert @ 12/22/2008 09:37 PM EST

I am curious as to what you get as extra in Sucide and Redemption? Are there just more or different solos? Longer intro/outro? A whole new dynamic? I really like the tune on the DM cd.

Yukoner, on the official death magnetic release, the first half of the solo is James, the second half kirk. On the GH versions, one is just james soloing, and the other is just kirk soloing. Not that it is cut shorter, the overall solo time is the same, so basically each song you get 1/2 a solo that is not heard on the record.

My opinion is you get the best of each solo on the official release. But it is cool to hear James have an entire solo of his own. Had I not heard the GH version, I would have never realized the beginning of the solo was James.

Posted by kurt @ 12/23/2008 09:21 AM EST

You know Xino... If you really want to pay your neighbors back... just fuck your chick so they can hear the noise while you're blasting the Alvin and the Chipmunks Hoola hoop song.

Looks like the Lions could listen to Broken, Beat and Scarred for a few months.....

Posted by Nick @ 12/29/2008 01:08 AM EST

Thanks a lot Favre and the Jets. Pats go 11-5, after all the injuries, and don't make the playoffs thanks to that "probowl quarterback" who has 22td's and 22 picks. Over-rated slob.

Posted by kurt @ 12/29/2008 09:08 AM EST

Nick,

The Lions are definitely brutal.
As a Steelers fan though, I am concerned about Big Ben, after getting ruined in a meaningless game (they still won).

Posted by manguy @ 12/29/2008 09:25 AM EST

Brett Favre is not over-rated. If you wanna talk about THIS year and only this year, then yes he was over-rated.

Posted by Nick @ 12/29/2008 01:23 PM EST

Nick, no denying he's put up lots of numbers. But he's been in two super bowls. He lost one. The one that he one, they scored no second half touchdowns offensively. I'm not saying the pats would have won that one, probably not as they were overacheiving just to be there. But had desmond howard not runback the kick for a touchdown, GB may well have lost that too. And the reason is, the great Brett Favre did nothing in the second half of that game. He's right up there with the most interceptions in history, AND many of his pics come at key moments in the game/season.

Thus, lots of great numbers, and over-rated.

Posted by kurt @ 12/29/2008 03:49 PM EST

Well, my take with all sports is that if my team isn't in it, I tend to root for someone that has never won it all. So I'll be pulling for carolina, atlanta or minnesota.

Unfortunately, my prediction is an all Manning Bowl. In which case I'd only be rooting for each defense to destroy the opposing quarterback.

Had a dream list night that I was at some festival and Metallica was playing. Lars wss counting in the intro. to Broken, Beat and Scarred to a kid who didn't know it. I was clapping my hand to the rhythm and Lars noticed me and let me sit in on drums for the entire song. Near the end, when I was playing, Lars' snare fell off or the snare stand fell down. Also, the high-hat fell apart. They fixed it and let me play again. Very strange.

The NHL should be ashamed of itself...last years MVP, scoring champion, most exciting player to watch...well on his way to be this years MVP, and right now he currently is near the top with most hits and is currently tied for the scoring lead. He is on track to score as many if not more Goals then he did last year and he is on track to break the record for the most shots since Phil Espisito. Why on earth isn't Alex Ovechkin a starter for the NHL All-Star game is beyond me.

Sorry had to rant a bit

Posted by Cooper @ 01/06/2009 02:37 PM EST

I agree with you Cooper but it's not the NHL's fault. The starting line up is determined by fans votes. Since this year it is Montreal, everyone and their mothers voted in MTL and thats why there is 4 MTL players that are starting. Kinda crazy....no it's SAD BUT TRUE!!!!!!! and yes Ovechkin should be starting more than anyone else.

Posted by MONSTER @ 01/06/2009 08:24 PM EST

Well, I'm a Habs fan... so GO HABS GO!!! HAHAHAHA

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 01/06/2009 08:53 PM EST

Not a single player from the defending Stanley Cup Champs on the team, either. Heard some talk on the radio about this earlier... evidently Chicago had some kinda huge voting promotion going on as well.

The system has failed (sorry) and needs to be looked into - maybe have the press nominate the top 5 or 6 players per position and then let the fans vote on the starters based on that?

Posted by IS-JD @ 01/07/2009 12:06 AM EST

I don't even care for hockey and that pisses me off....

Posted by Nick @ 01/07/2009 01:20 AM EST

The system has indeed failed...some of the best players this year will be sitting at home watching.

Of course the only thing the NHL knows how to do is promote Crosby - who has to be one of the biggest whiners in the game....he really has been showing his true colors as of late hasn't he?

He is a good player but the comparisons to Gretzky have to stop. Whats more exciting than a player who can score in bunches, racks up assists, hits like like a frieght train, and is as fast Tallica's fastest riffs?

But I guess Crosby has a pretty face but in my eyes Ovechkin is the superior players - his stats do all the talking.

Posted by Cooper @ 01/07/2009 01:22 AM EST

Add me to the list of those that think Crosby is an overrated crybaby... all he and his coach did during the Finals last year was whine. They sure didn't represent the game I love in a good fashion and the NHL, whom already has some terrible marketing skills really screwed up by backing this kid way toooooo much.

Posted by IS-JD @ 01/07/2009 09:27 AM EST

It's just as Allstar game guys, who really takes this stuff serious? The next day you won't even remember who was playing for the damn thing. Don't understand why everone is getting their panties in a bunch over this.

Or maybe it's cause I'm a Habs fan that it doesn't bother be so much????

Either way, don't care. Just get on with the season!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 01/07/2009 10:19 AM EST

Nobody has even mentioned Jeff Carter. The guy is royally underrated.

Posted by manguy @ 01/07/2009 10:51 AM EST

Well, I don't pay attention to the all star games for any of the leagues. Why watch an athletic event that the particpants aren't giving it their all?

Football= glorified flag football game

Hockey= what the hell is the point of a hockey match with no hitting?

Basketball= no defense whatsoever

Baseball= closest thing to an actual game, but I still don't bother with it.

Posted by kurt @ 01/07/2009 05:14 PM EST

The beer league I play in is better hockey than the NHL allstar game. That Ovechkin (#2 in the NHL scoring race and hands down the most exciting player in the hockey--period) is not a starter just shows that the allstar game is nothing more than a popularity contest. Having the starting 6 for the eastern conference from the "Bleu-Blanc-et-Rouge" might seem cool if you live in Montreal or are a Habs fan, but it makes absolutely no sense in terms of promoting the league in the U.S., where many franchises are struggling. If the NHL wants to restore some cred to this game, let the sports writers vote on the starters as they do for various NHL awards. And give'em something to play for (like MLB does w/ homefield advantage in the WS).

Baseball is the closest thing to making me want to jump into a pool of rusty nails.

That is the most boring "game" I have ever come across.

NHL and NFL are the two most exciting leagues.

I'll take Malkin over Crosby or Ovechkin. I live in Pittsburgh and think Crosby whines too much. As for Ovechkin...anything bad short of death and dismemberment that happens to him is fine by me...and the Red Wings...the won fair and square. No crying from me.

Posted by missing1inside @ 01/08/2009 07:26 PM EST

I watched that interview with James on blabbermouth taken from the radio station, and I think I'd hit that girl who's doing the interview. There's something sexy about her.

Posted by Johnny @ 01/08/2009 07:55 PM EST

I don't like or dislike crosby. But it seems any new "phenom" that comes into a sport gets so fuckin coddled and pampered that they know of no other response than whining. Look at how good Lebron James is, but he can whine about the refs all day long. He whines games in advance depending on the opponent.

So, it isn't a defense of crosby(and it does seem worse in hockey), but it's not uncommon these days.

They've got a really cool billboard up here in Metro Detroit. It's one of those video billboards that changes. But in rotation is a white Metallica logo on a black background, with the Words "Hockeytown" and the # of days until the show on Tuesday.

Going to see them in Milwaukee tomorrow night!!! So Excited!!! I haven't seen them since the first leg of the St. Anger Tour. I think that was 03 or 04.... ugh can't wait!

Anybody know where I can legally download the mp3 for Met's version of Remember Tomorrow? I've checked Rhapsody, itunes, msnmusic and can't find it. Thanks.

I don't know if I would agree that promoting a young team with loads of talent is terrible marketing. The winter classic last year was a huge success, the playoffs had great ratings and I would think that had a lot to do with the Pens being involved. Although I admit, if I didn't live near Pittsburgh I would probably hate Crosby, although to be fair I don't think Crosby ever wanted to be this Golden Boy type player the media has tried to turn him into.

TTTSNB i dont think there is a way to downloading it legally, cause it was kinda like a promo CD that came with the magazine, if you can't find it online hit me up...

With the new year, I'm hoping we'll see some more surprises with their setlists, although I'm not holding my breath for it to happen. And if it doesn't, I fully expect to have a great time when I see them on Saturday.

Just got home from the show in Milwaukee! The played amazing! WAAAAAAAAAY more energy than the last time I saw them in 2004 during the St. Anger band. When you see them live you really see and feel how much better they are playing. Not just there playing, but the way they act on stage. I have never see them this lively on a Tour in a LONG TIME. Shit, James and Kirk were standing on top of the guitar amp monitors and soloing lol it was awesome.

TTSHB,
If you download a frees ound recorder then you can record it off of youtube. The recorder I have is free recorder 7.3.1 That's the only way I think you can get it. I've used that recorder to get a lot of stuff from youtube that I blast in my car. Let me know if it works.

I'm not sure if this will work, but below is the link to the MP3 of Remember Tomorrow that Andrew posted last summer.

I was at the show in Milwaukee and I sorry to anyone who likes Machine Head, but they were terrible just terrible. They sounded like a 747 and u couldn't hear shit.

Metallica got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The full list of inductees:

The performers:
Jeff Beck
Little Anthony & the Imperials
Metallica
Run-D.M.C.
Bobby Womack

Early Influence:
Wanda Jackson

Sidemen:
Bill Black
DJ Fontana
Spooner Oldham

No surprise, but very much well deserved. Now, the million dollar question- does Jason show up at the ceremony? I hope he does.

And who, if anyone performs some Metallica covers. Just not anyone from the MTV icon thing.

Anthrax?
Megadeth? lol

Machine Head are terrible? Make sure you add it's your opinion. While no one on earth can touch Metallica, Machine Head are hardly terrible. In fact, in 2006 for the Donnington (download, whatever) they were voted best live band. That damn band is full of passion, and Phil Demmel is a great guy (I've hung with him backstage) and an avid Met fan. If all you like is Metallica, that's fine, but Machine Head are far from terrible.

LMAO it is my opinion and I will say it again, they sucked live. Back up vocals were terrible and you could not make out anything they were saying or playing. I'm a Metallica fan and I would think I am a "good guy" just like this Phil guy you say is, but does that make shit turns into gold? I think you have the answer....

p.s. my opinion

Those stupid fucks from Fuse,on the above link, have in Metallica's Songlist Kill the Wabbit from Mark McCollum !!!!Assholes!!!

Ok, I am going this sunday night.

But what time does metallica go on? Or better yet, when does machine head start? Cause I'm likely to skip the sword, but with those "will call" tickets to pick up at the venue, I have nothing that says start time.

Thanks to anyone who answers.

Nick, I don't think you're a bad guy at all. I respect you don't like Machine Head, but a big part of that is because you may not know them. I'm not sure, but that could be a reason. Secondly, Metallica has touted them many times, and I personally would've rather saw them open versus Down. I enjoy Down's music, but with a beer and a smoke. You've always been a pretty intelligent poster, and lord knows a couple assholes have used my screenname and have had me banned. I've always enjoyed this site, and like debating, disagreeing, and calling some of you names.

Hey Kurt they go on a little past 9. I was at the Milwaukee show and figured it out the hard way, but it also says that on MetonTour if you don't believe me (in the blogs). I would be in your seat at 9 and you will be fine. They started at like 9:10 - 9:15. Hope that helps.

Thanks nick. Now I just gotta make sure I get this food poisoning out of my system(heck of a weight loss program: get a little food poisoning, lose 12 pounds in a day).

Again, those of us with the Wii get fucked. The Wii Guitar Hero doesn't come out until around may.

Jesus, couldn't download DM tracks(a couple made available, but not the whole disc), have to wait longer for GHM. Did someone over at Nintendo fuck over someone in the met camp or something?

what about the dumbass that said there was a lukewarm reception to Death Magnetic.....Jaymz just laughed in his face. That was great!!
