The Detroit Free Press reported earlier this week that Lars will be auctioning off another Jean-Michel Basquiat painting - titled "Untitled (Boxer)." This one is expected to sell for about $14 million and could set a new Christie's record. Basquiat was a New York graffiti artist who died of a drug overdose in 1988. (more here)
Death Magnetic's reign atop the US charts lasted 3 weeks. The album dropped to third after being ousted by rapper TI.
More tour dates are popping up over at metallica.com; MetClub members should keep an eye on their inbox or check the site for backstage pass info.
sweeeet. I'm curious as to how they're going to group it; are they going to split up the songs era wise etc? If so I can imagine a lot of people just playing the first four or five levels :D :D

I have a Wii and PS2 and Guitar Hero for both, but I never tried them out yet, my roomates are batshit over them. But if I had it, I think I would try them all, but the most fun albums would be Kill'em All and Ride the Lightning, and maybe Load since it is so full of grooves. If the 'tallica is gona put out this Guiatr Hero I just might have to give it a shot. But in my mind, I am already a guitar hero!! Air guitar anyhow!!
(Seriously I fucking wail on the air guitar!!!)

Looking at this new batch of tour dates that's slowly being posted, I gotta be honest, it's looking less and less likely that they'll be another leg in North America. At least, not until next fall at the earliest.
the guy that introduces them is JUANES a very successful latin pop artist....i present you the best motherfucking band of the world...metallica!

who the hell would spend millions of dollars on a stupid painting by some druggy homeless bum? I don't get it. Lars is a great drummer but the painting thing I just don't get. Oh well, it's his money. Like he said in the SKOM documentary that he parks his money on the wall(paintings) and not the bank. lol

5 songs from DM played yesterday.
Setlist: That Was Just Your Life The End Of The Line Harvester Of Sorrow Wherever I May Roam One Broken, Beat And Scarred Cyanide Frantic Until It Sleeps The Four Horsemen The Day That Never Comes Master Of Puppets Fight Fire With Fire Nothing Else Matters Enter Sandman - - - - - - - - Last Caress Blitzkrieg Seek and Destroy
Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 10/18/2008 11:53 PM EST
Ugh. Frantic continues to find its way onto the setlist. I love All Within My Hands and wish we could see a non-acoustic version live. Until it sleeps is the only other week spot, but other than that, that's a hell of a setlist. TDTNC is a much better song live than it is on the album, but I wish they'd replace it with UnIII. Nice to see Caress back on the list, but I'd love to see Damage make a permanent spot. I don't hate S&D for a closer like General does, but I do agree that there are better tunes to close with. Whaaah whaahhh whaahhh. Seeing so much DM is awesome, and I'm going to focus on that.
Posted by Azrael @ 10/19/2008 03:09 AM EST
I love Until It Sleeps, but not as a live song. There's more emotion on the CD in my opinion. I've said it before, I think Whiplash would be a perfect closer.
TDTNC is really awesome live. It looked like at least 2 people got on stage on that performance.

OMCTD or whomever you are... as I stated in last posting you were to e-mail me. You did not, you chose to find a way around the banning, thus further slapping me and this community in the face.
So, I really so no choice but to continue the ban and to ban this new IP address and the names. You could've done this a little more maturely.
Posted by IS-JD @ 10/19/2008 02:09 PM EST
Of the five songs from DM played live so far.. I really only care to see 1 1/2 of them live. Oh, one and two halves.
BBS for sure, and kinda One Minute and kinda The Day...

Come on Metallica, less End of the Line, more All Nightmare Long. Also no Sandman and Judas Kiss. PLS THXXXX
Posted by caspian @ 10/20/2008 04:26 AM EST
I'd replace Cyanide and BBS with All nightmare long and Judas Kiss. Close the set with my apocolypse, whiplash or damage inc.
My only problem with frantic is that they played it live plenty of times, give me sweet amber. I also love All within my hands, but don't see them pulling it off too well live.
I'd also love to hear Am I evil live again(only once back in 1992).

Any clue with South American tour dates?
Posted by EPDA @ 10/20/2008 01:03 PM EST
My only real complaint about the setlists is I really wished they'd move away from the 2 short songs and then Seek encore.
Otherwise, as long as they mix up things (and I think we'll see more as the tour actually starts) from night to night, I'll be fine.
Posted by Trace @ 10/20/2008 02:21 PM EST
JD, do you not like TWJYL and TEOTL?
Posted by kurt @ 10/20/2008 02:55 PM EST
I'm convinced no matter what they do or do not play in Columbus I'll go home simultaneously thrilled and disappointed. Such is life as a superfan...
Posted by missing1inside @ 10/20/2008 06:25 PM EST
They're definitely not faves. While TWJYL has grown on me a bit, TEOTL is still tied with My Apocalypse as my least fave songs on the album... ok, TEOTL probably has the edge.
Posted by IS-JD @ 10/21/2008 12:15 AM EST
Still hoping they will play Fixxxer live, but I am not holding my breath... Also, someone needs to find out why the lyrics for Cyanide have "End this war" in them for the credits, but in the actual song he doesn't say that at all. What the hell is that?
Posted by Nick @ 10/21/2008 12:15 AM EST
Nick, if you look back at some of the early reviews for DM, you'll notice that some folks suggested that one of the songs that got previewed be called "...End This War." So, I'm taking a guess those lines were taken out pretty late into the production of the album.
Posted by IS-JD @ 10/21/2008 12:33 AM EST
Good call. The weird thing is is that it's still in the CD booklet and on Metallica . com. Curious lyrics seeing Metallica doesn't like politics and James being a Republican. Wish someone asked them a question about this, just a curious.
I think you (and others) are taking the "end this war" out of context of the lyrics. It doesn't necessarily mean any actual war or conflict going on in the world currently.... or more specifically about Iraq or Afghanistan.

Don't want to get into politics but most Republicans and Democrats are not "pro war". Most do not want a war just for the heck of it.

Posted by Nick @ 10/21/2008 03:38 PM EST
man, Suck and Destroy as the closer AGAIN? It must be cause they are tired at the end of the night and they want something easy for the last song, and not because they think its hug fan favorite. At least make it like the binge and purge 20 min. version, lol. jk.
Posted by The General @ 10/21/2008 05:24 PM EST
Man, ESPN was playing more MetallicA tonight, UN3 was on.
Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 10/21/2008 11:06 PM EST
General, in their defense, S&D is just ridiculously fun to play. I am good enough on guitar to know how bad I suck, but I can just sit and crank out the main chug riff and pretend that the amazing crunch sound coming from my guitar has something to do with my competence, rather than being a side effect of one of the greatest simple rock riffs ever written. At the end of the night, it must be nice to play something on autopilot that sounds so perfect. But no, it's not the closer that Breadfan or Damage is. "Here's everything we have left, watch it melt the stage." There's nothing like that feeling of a sprint to the finish and fall down exhausted with nothing left to give. S&D is more of a jog to the line when you're so far ahead you can't be caught. It lacks the drama and danger of something more challenging. Still, you're seeing Metallica. I've seen them so many times, but I'm just as jazzed every single time ecstacy of gold starts. If you aren't enjoying it just because the closer is S&D, it's time to get some tix to see some awful band like Dragonfarce and remind you why we all go to the live shows anyway. BTW, who is going to the most shows this tour? I've already seen Ozzfest, going to Des Moines this weekend and Tulsa on the 18th. Trying to decide on Houston. I'm sure there's plenty of people here who can humble me with 5 or more shows....

Posted by Nick @ 10/22/2008 01:01 AM EST
Oh, and if you ARE going to get tix to see Dragonfarce, make sure it's with money you stole from a crack whore. That way you don't have to feel dirty about spending hard earned cash on a band that has the artistic integrity of an Irish Spring jingle.
Posted by Azrael @ 10/22/2008 01:08 AM EST
Well, I'm tyring to get myself into a situation where I can to do two shows. I got one for sure now (Philly).
As for S&D, I'm okay with it closing. I just don't want it to be the closer every night.
Posted by Trace @ 10/22/2008 01:13 AM EST
Oh and in Glendale, it appears that they're sticking pretty close to the script laid out in the rehersal show. The setlist so far:
1. Life 2. End of the line 3. Sad 4. Roam 5. One 6. BB&S 7. Cyanide 8. Frantic 9. Until it Sleeps

Frantic is OK, but does it really need to be in the set? ugh... Where is Dyers? Damage? FIXXXER!!???? I would like them to play at least 1 song off of each Load and Reload too. Devils Dance anyone? Wasting my Hate?
Posted by Nick @ 10/22/2008 05:10 PM EST
Really guys, is this setlist that bad? I've heard sandman enough, but they have a fair amount of fans that started at TBA, so it's sort of a must to play that. I agree it should be no more than three TBA songs per night, but I think overall it was a pretty decent mix. I would prefer to swap Until is Sleeps with something else from the loads, but they aren't going to ignore them altogether.
Nick, I love Dyer's too. But I wouldn't be surprised if they never play it again. For one thing, James never got the whole set of lyrics right. I own every livemetallica version of it, and it was screwed up every time. We might see damage(serious fav of mine). Fixxer will probably never happen. I could go for Wasting, DD, or even bitch over sleeps.
In all honesty though, it's a fair mix of their history. AND IT'S ONLY GIG #1. It's gonna be mixed up.

14 MILLION?????? FOR A FUCKING PAINTING?!?!?!?! Give me a damn paintbrush! I've missed my calling all these years!
Not a fan of "Until", live or otherwise. If you're doing Load songs, "Bleeding" all the way baby... How about "Outlaw Torn"?
Posted by Mark @ 10/22/2008 05:50 PM EST
I would love to hear Fixxxer live, not that I'm expecting it anytime soon. Hopefully, though, we do get some stuff off the albums in 80's and 90's that they've never done live.
One little thing I would change is, if they're going to do NEM every night, I would move it to the start of the encores. Having a slow song in the middle of that power punch at the end can't help but kill the momentum, I think, but it would fit in well at the beginning of the encore when everyone is already a little spent.
But, as mentioned, it's the first official show. We know they're going to mix things up.
Posted by Trace @ 10/22/2008 07:57 PM EST
Just so you guys know - there's a guy on the Metallicab boards (Moderus) who has come up with the definative GH3 mix of Death Magnetic.
This version has heaps of punch but doesn't distort like the CD. It actually sounds exactly like what the CD should of sounded like.
I'd love to hear some Fixxxer! Also, Trapped Under Ice, Whiplash, Outlaw, Lightning, Damage, but skip NEW & Until It Sleeps. Oh well, it was just the 1st night of the tour like you guys said. I'm just glad they'll be in the states for a while.
Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 10/22/2008 11:30 PM EST
I have a feeling once the next Guitar hero is released we may hear Trapped Under Ice a few times. As for the setlist first show of the tour I think we will see some different songs come through. In regards to the black album 3 to 4 songs a night would be good and rotate In God, Wolf, Holier they at least broke those songs out in the last 4 years. Nobody says It always has to be the singles from TBA As for Load/Reload I have no prob with songs from them I just want it to be some songs they have never played or rarely played. I was lucky enough to get Outlaw in 2000 and would love to get Fixxxer, Wild things or Carpe. Load Wasting My hate and the Thorn Within. It might happen since james said in an interview how much he likes some of the songs on Reload. Hell I don't even have to be at the show they play those songs at I just want to get the download. Hopefully when I see them In Denver on Nov 4 I get 7 New songs. 5 will be from Death and 2 from any other album . I have seen the boys seven time and have only heard 3 songs from Justice, 4 from Master 4 from Lightning, and 4 from Kill.

you want the "superior" mix of the GH3 version, hit me with an email.
Nick - thats fine if you don't want to hear it but there might be others here who do.
My sole intention was to provide a kick-arse version of the album (that doesn't distort) to other Metallica fans. What is your intention by telling me to "give it up"?
Im with Nick on this one honestly. we've heard about this 'superior' mix way to much. we're beating a fuckin dead horse here. if you want it, go to a torrent site and type death magnetic in the search, its not hard. personally ive heard both and I like the album version better..i dont care about the distortion 'issues' and i guess my ears arent keen enough to hear this clipping everyone complains about. Either way DM rocks!
Posted by Mark @ 10/23/2008 10:07 PM EST
Mark - it is widely accepted that the version I posted is better than any other out there (so if someone just went to the torrent site they wouldn't know which one is the best there are so many on there). Again, if it upsets you that I posted it just ignore the goddam post.

I would just like to say that i dont care how widely accepted it is that this version is better, i was only stating which one I like better. and when you search Death Magnetic on a torrent site it is easy to tell because it actually says "GHIII" version. Just giving my opinion man...relax, you'll live longer.
Posted by Mark @ 10/23/2008 11:27 PM EST
Well thats fine Mark but I was responding to the other guy telling me to 'give it up'. It's the first time I've posted that version of DM here so it's not like I've been flooding this place with it.
Fuck it - I try and post a link to a version that has made many, many Metallica fans very happy and I pretty much get told not to do it.
Is this sort of information not 'highbrow' enough for you? If you don't like it then keep listening to the CD or whatever else. It doesn't matter to me. I was just trying to spread the word on something that has excited a few Metallibrothers and Metallisisters.

I know the sound issue and the GH3 has been going on for what seems forever but that version I posted has only been around for a few days and it blows all the other ones away.
On a different note - it's great to see Blackened back on the setlist (they played it tonight). How long before we hear The Judas Kiss?

Maybe it's just me but I think Europe and other countries seem to get a little more love than we do in terms of the setlist. The 2 New Songs the entire Puppetz album, And Justice played for the first time since 1989. Hopefully I get a backstage pass and can have a conversation with Lars about some of this in Denver. Don't get me wrong I love Sad but True but I don't need to hear it live every time that I see them. Besides getting 5 songs off of Death. The setlist tonight wouldn't have offered me anything that I haven't heard. My hope is to get Ride, Justice, the God that failed Disposable, Damage, or Orion in Denver. If I only get one of those songs I'll be happy hell it's not like I'm and asking for Dyers Eve or Misery. just my 2 cents
Posted by theoutlawthatfailed @ 10/24/2008 03:21 AM EST
Well, considering there's been about 50 concerts in Europe over the last four years compared to just a handful in North America, I'm not really sure we can draw much, if any compairson between the setlists that Europe gets and the ones that we get.

Just got back to Dallas after the Des Moines show. Damn loud. I was thrilled that they didn't play Frantic or Sleeps. Would have preferred Caress over Darling, but that's my only complaint from the band. I was a little annoyed about the Lurch lookalike next to me who just stood there through the whole concert. Seriously, dude. You paid. Enjoy yourself. The 5 new songs were almost flawless. I was a little nervous that they weren't going to get the riff changes down for Life, since they were a little ragged for the album premiere. Was just an awesome show, as always.

Pure speculation on this, but I think the reason that Europe gets more love from the boys is because they get more love from the europeans. We all know how much backlash Metallica got over napster and St. Anger here in the good ol USofA. If I were them I might be a tad resentful that so many fans here turned their backs on them in their time of need. Even though I think St. Anger is a weak album as far as Metallica albums are concerned, I never went on an anti-metallica tirade like many american fans did. The napster thing never bothered me, IT'S THEIR FUCKING ART! Anyways only the boys would have the answer to this speculation, that's just my 2 cents.
Posted by ole @ 10/28/2008 01:50 PM EST
People can wine, cry and bitch all they want about Napster, but it is illegal end of story. I never understood that... "Mommy Metallica won't let me steal their music anymore and now I have to pay for it, it's not fair!!!"
Posted by Nick @ 10/28/2008 03:20 PM EST
I'll think about it, JD.
Some people complain about spending $12 for a CD and not being able to get their music for free, but then they'll go spend over $100 for a North Face jacket.

So there I am in the car with the wife, who has XM channel 81(bpm). All uptempo club stuff, which I have to say I prefer over pop radio, but in general not my style. One song catches my attention, and I figure out that the main beat(some kind of keyboard/synth thing) is a complete duplicate of Insomnia from megadeth. I wonder if that was intentional, and if mustaine even knows the song exists.

Kinda cool how James' "Scary Guy" drawing has evolved over the years....from a stick figure guy from Live Shit to the vulturous thing.

Yeah I am pretty sure if you walk into a book store, photocopy all the books and hand them out for free on the streets, someone will shut you down quick. It's theft. Napster is no different, I always sided with Metallica on this. Nothing in life is free.
Posted by Yukoner @ 10/31/2008 01:55 AM EST
I don't think that many people would say that it isn't theft. I think most people (for good reason) are just completely sick of the heavyhanded and often illogical approach of most anti-piracy campaigns (RIAA suing random people for insane amounts, the DMCA act and other retarded bits of legislation etc).
Metallica's approach was a good deal gentler then that, however, various actions by the RIAA (among others) have alienated most people completely to the anti-piracy lobby. I don't blame them.
Furthermore, you really have to ask- did Metallica need to sue them? Would've been simpler if they'd just pointed the downloading out to their record label and went "oy take care of this for us".

Well, here's the thing Nick- suppose I download someone's music that I had never heard before and was thus never going to buy (this happens fairly often). How is this costing the artist anything? At worst, I'll just keep the mp3's and no one will be any worse off. At best, I'll buy the album.
Of course, this doesn't happen with everyone. And say you lose some CDs/Mp3s you bought- download some mp3's to make up for it? Oops! That's illegal and you're as bad as any other person. It's laws like that that understandably frustrate people.
Hmm, regarding the RRHOF thing; I can see what James means with Dave not being on stage but it would be damn cool to see him there, although highly unlikely.
Posted by caspian @ 11/03/2008 07:04 PM EST
Dave should be in the HOF, but with Megadeth, not Metallica.
Posted by manguy @ 11/04/2008 01:04 PM EST
That's why there is itunes where they have 30 second previews of songs and they are 99 cents each to see if you wanna buy the whole thing or not. Not to mention many other sites do this too. They also have these programs that you can import your music on and back it up. Maybe it's a good idea for some people to get in the 21st century. Hey there's even ipods! lol

There are other choices but Americans will not vote for them all though they are better choices.

A lot of the other parties aren't particularly worthwhile.
Not surprising obama won. I hope he does well; overall I can't really see either McCain or Obama being any better then Bush was. I'm really, really glad I don't like in America.
Oh well. 4/8 more years of big business and bombing.. BUT NOW WITH A HIP BLACK MAN IN CHARGE WOOOOOOO

I wanted to vote for Hetfield on the spot where you can write in a candidate of your choice, but then I thought, well, if everyone else thinks Hetfield should be president, then we would have no more Metallica, that would kind of suck. But I will vote for him when Metallica hangs it up (if they ever do). Is he democrat or republican??
Posted by Robert @ 11/05/2008 01:12 AM EST
Republican.
Well, no reason why he couldn't be both a president and play in Metallica. They've relaxed the side project rule, haven't they?
No cameras at the iWirless Center on Saturday. Originally, I was thinking about taking my big camera in, but I might just sneak my POS Sony camera in. Was thinking of doing a banner, but haven't had time yet. Not sure if I'll be able to get it done in time. Plus, I'm way up in the nosebleeds.

Its amazing to see how many people basically want to lick Obamas ass already when he has done nothing concrete in governance. I understand he has brought so many people together because he fits the profile of hope, but lets see if he can transform rhetoric into reality. I think cautious optimism is the way to go. Trust me, I am happy to see a black man as President to show how far America has come in race relations, I just wish it was a different black man then him.
Posted by manguy @ 11/05/2008 09:24 AM EST
Wow this is impressive, and a nice gesture if true !!
The Enter Sandman rockers have been nominated for entry in 2009 - and Hetfield wants to use the opportunity to bring together every musician who has appeared on a Metallica album. Skip related content
He extends the invitation particularly to Newsted, who left Metallica in 2001 after falling out with the band's singer.
Hetfield says, “Everyone that played on a record should be there. You’re considered for the Hall 25 years after your first recording, not after you formed.”
“Jason Newsted should be up there - he was in the band for 14 years and played on quite a few records. And so should Robert (Trujillo).”
Man if people think the choices for U.S. President were bad check out Canada's last election.. talk about a stinker! but yes, if given the oppertuinity, I would vote for Metallica for Prime Minister of Canada. Especially if we can change our National Anthem to Battery, how awesome would that sound before hockey games?
Posted by Yukoner @ 11/05/2008 01:14 PM EST
I am Canadian myself and yes I agree, so we had 5 poor choices instead of two...Quality over Quantity is the ideal. There are parts of each one I would like to frankenstein into one high quality leader.
Posted by manguy @ 11/05/2008 02:08 PM EST
I wonder if Bob Rock will be invited to the RRHOF induction (if they are inducted)since he played bass on St. Anger and has writing credits on that album as well.
Posted by EET FUK @ 11/05/2008 03:41 PM EST
I think he will, he was also a major part of Metallica being succesful to the point where they are being nominated to the RRHOF, let alone being first ballot inductees (I am assuming) And yeah he did play and write on St. Anger. And good call Manguy between the 5 of them I think they coulda put together one decent PM. So long as one of them isn't Dion's voice I never understood a word he said during the whole election
Posted by Yukoner @ 11/05/2008 07:07 PM EST
Jason, Bob Rock & even dave Mustaine should be at the RRHOF. Jason was a big part of Metallica, even though I really am pissed at him for his actions when leaving the band, Bob was a big part of Metallica for helping them make their biggest record and Mustaine was there in the beginning and was part of getting the band rolling. I hope that he would mature enough to embrace the honor and not start shit with the band members, but I guess we'll see what happens. That was a nice gesture to Jason and I really don't thinnk that the boys will ever do a reunion thing with Jason. Maybe one day in the future, when they decide to hang up their boots, have him play with them on a couple of songs during their last tour? That would be cool in my opinion. Does anyone know when they officially announce that they will be inducted?? My in-laws live in Michigan so it would give me an excuse to go see them if I can get tickets the show in OH.
Posted by MONSTER @ 11/05/2008 10:50 PM EST
I happened to find myself on Blabbermouth yesterday, and there are so many people that think Hetfield is a prick for not extending the welcome to Mustaine if they are to be inducted. These people are morons--Metallica does not decide who gets inducted, the RRHOF makes that decision. They have their set criteria for who gets in and who does not, and in this case Mustaine does not...end of story...tough shit Dave!
Posted by EET FUK @ 11/06/2008 12:50 AM EST
Who gives a shit about Dave. I agree with James... whoever played on the records.
Posted by Nick @ 11/06/2008 01:19 AM EST
I'll be honest, I like Megadeth but I don't give a shit about Dave that much either. James does have a point about the records and thats fine....I guess he's right, if they have him then they would have to probably invite Ron McGovney too lol.

I picked up the Kerrang special thing with 'Tallica on the cover - lots of older pics I've never seen before. Impressive, most impressive.
Also spotted the guys on the ocver of Metal Edge, generally it's a mag I pass on. But, I decided to scan through it a bit... the article is by Lonn Friend. Better than that, he talks to Tony Smith in it. Great read.

Fellas I was in Denver they boys fucking killed. I got Ride, Damage, and Hit the lights for the first time. All the new ones sounded pretty tight with Broken Beat and Scared may have been the best and I say that with End of the Line being my fav of the ablum at this time. Something about BBS last night the passion behind it just killed. Also after they played Memory, Lars gave myself and my Buddy Joe each a Drumstick for rockin out so damn hard. Anytime he or I started chanting, We got the rest of our side going and it snowballed from there. My eighth show and I would have to say overall best setlist and best crowd. Now I'm stuck in Minnesota waiting for the weather to blow over so I can get home. If I had known this was gonna happen I would have presaled tickets to Omaha. By the way the early entry for Metclub is awesome, it's nice to see the club taking care of the people who shell out for it. My friend Joe and I were the 1st ones in the venue, and we were on the wide side of the stage with Lars drum set facing us. JD Damage sounded epic. I hope you get it in Ohio.

What did you think of the show, JD? I never bought any merchandise from the Moline show, but kind of wish I did now. Oh well, I'll look around the internet and see if I can pick up a shirt cheaper. Did you get any merchandise?
Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 11/10/2008 10:59 AM EST
Agreed, the merch appeared pretty expensive I opted to wait as well. Might've changed my mind had there been a program - a full tour without a program!? Bah.
A couple of things that I had feared seemed true. The two opener's (Life and End) just seemed to go on and on... noticed a few other songs where the band almost seemed like the song seemed to go just a little too long. The Day That Never Comes was an exception - they really seemed to like playing the long instrumental part.
James was very animated and energetic onstage. He really looks to be having fun up there. Rob seemed a little more reserved than I expected... Kirk almost seemed distant.
I think I would've traded the lasers for a few video screens. I wonder if their playing (somewhat) smaller venues to make up for the lack of video? I missed the Ecstasy vid and the Full Metal Jacket One bits... I'm not sure though, the laser had it's moments, but almost seemed too gimmicky.

Nice little jam on A National Acrobat before the encores. Wish they'd kept going with it...
Posted by IS-JD @ 11/10/2008 01:14 PM EST
I had a lot of fun at the Columbus show. It exceeded my expectations. Personally, I like the first 2 songs on Death Magnetic, so I didn't find them too long. To each their own on that one. None of it matters though, I've finally seen Ride the Lightning live...I can drop dead today and be satisfied.
Posted by missing1inside @ 11/10/2008 04:06 PM EST
I rest my case. I have never seen a band so good and so successful, so criticized!!
There is always something to crab about. Guys need to chill, we should be gratefull we have them when there is so much shite music out there.
Posted by manguy @ 11/10/2008 06:24 PM EST
Open your eyes, Manguy... everything is critiqued to death. When you deal with other fans you tend to speak the same language.. it's often nuances that make the shows for me nowadays.
My first posts dealt with immediate reactions mostly written after a very long day - including driving over 7 hours, getting home very late (or early) and then writing. My brain often works in spurts... I remember pieces, then it's up to me to string them altogether. You got an honest, (semi) immediate reaction from me... but there's more coming in the next post.
Posted by IS-JD @ 11/11/2008 12:03 AM EST
Doesn't seem like 4 years. They're back and they're strong... James was on fire last night in Columbus - simply electric. He's always been the heartbeat and soul of Metallica, but last night he was the show, the star and the spotlight.
I got to see 7 songs I've never seen them play live. The 5 from the new album, and 2 oldies - Jump in the Fire and Leper Messiah. Both were electric, I lean a little more towards Leper - even if it seemed like it got a little too long there for a bit. As did a couple of the new new songs...
I'll be honest, three (or four?) of the five songs they're playing live from Death Magnetic aren't my faves from the album. Not that they're bad, it's just that I think there's much stronger material on the album. That Was Just Your Life and End of the Line opened the show... and both started decently... and both seemed to get a little too long about 3/4 of the way it... it even looked to me as if the band themselves were given each other bored glances. End of the Line especially seemed too long... of course, I make no secret my possible biasedness that it's also my least fave song on the new CD (or is My Apocalypse?).
Now, I've also critiqued the second half of The Day That Never Comes. It's got some crazy cool stuff happening there, but it doesn't really work as "song" to me. It's like part "A" is the song, and then there's this huge jam that seemed to be pasted on at the end. But, hold on! That jam at the end is killer live, it comes to life... breaths anew. I swear James left hand working the fretboard of his guitar could ignite from the friction. Total highlight of the new songs.
BBS... it's gonna take a while for the sing alongs to catch up to the road tested Die chants - but it'll be worth it. They seemed to really like this one, but again seemed to suffer a bit because of it's length and repetitiveness, but in time could be another Creeping Death.
Speaking of Creep - another old gem that the audience knew their parts. The lack of Jason's backing vocals (which seemed to hurt them big time on the Stanger tour) was no longer an issues... but, I'm not sure if that's because Rob and Kirk have stepped up or if the audience has... cause this crowd was loud.
It was a setlist that was about the new and the old. Material from 92-07 was mostly ignored (Die My Darling being an exception, although a cover). I am a fan of all of Metallica's eras, so I missed that they skipped such a great, diverse era.
As stated many times before by myself and others... Seek is not my closer of choice, and I think it needs a rest. I liked the old days where they closed on a cover.
...and just like the old days, I still took my piss break during Wherever I May Roam.
Posted by IS-JD @ 11/11/2008 01:25 AM EST
JD, my post wasn't aimed directly at you. Its a general comment.
Anyway, I am also allowed to critique the critiquers, lol.
I would probably be complaining more about things like parking and standing in line then I would about the show.
Cheers.

Standing in line as one of my favorite parts of my first Metallica show, a bottle of hot whiskey thats been sitting in my car all afternoon getting lit up with a bunch of other 'tallica heads. I even met Calgary Flames goalie Mikka Kipprusof (SP?) and then defenceman Mike Commadore. Even saw Ryan Smyth too, who at the time as an Oiler. That was a hell of a show and a hell of a night. It's too bad I have to pay so much in plane tickets and then fork over the cash for good floor tickets to see them again. Well worth it anyhow.

I've been thinking a lot about the tracklisting of Death Magnetic. When I got the downloads, I thought I was listening in order, but was not. I think this spoiled the overall "album" experience for me. Granted, MP3's tend to ruin that experience anyway... so the point is kinda moot. So, to stop some huge monolog type thing... this is how I would've put it together.
Metallica - BBS 1 Cyanide 2 Broken, Beat & Scarred 3 All Nightmare Long 4 The Day That Never Comes 5 The End Of The Line 6 Judas Kiss 7 The Unforgiven 3 8 That Was Just Your Life 9 Suicide & Redemption 10 My Apocalypse
Cyanide just seems more a Battery/Sandman type opener. I would've made BBS the title track. ANL is the downtuned third track... EOTL becomes the 5th song filler; JK becomes the side 2 opener, UN3 retains it's spot and strong side 2, track 2... Suicde and Apocalypse retain their classic spots as the instrumental second from last and last track. On second thought, I'd probabaly swap out TWJYL and JK to give JK that classic God That Failed/Leper Messiah tracklist feel. It's a toss up.

Well, I took out DM and listened to all the discs from KEA to SA. I forgot how much I liked TUI, Eye of the beholder, shortest Straw, Frayed ends.
But I was really surprised how much I liked many of the reload songs. I've kind of had a mental block of that being the "worst" record. But that is really just a couple of songs, and being sick of hearing fuel for the millionth time.
Then putting DM back in, it re-affirmed how good it is, and not that I was just happy to get new tallica tunes. I'm really hoping by the time they come to boston that they add ANL and/or JK to the setlist. I would freak for My Apocolypse, but I have a feeling it won't be in the set for a while.
Other reasonable(meaning they have played it before) hopes for the show: Am I Evil(favorite cover), Disposeable Heroes(the song that hooked me onto tallica way back in high school, 86) or Damage Inc.
Posted by kurt @ 11/14/2008 03:01 PM EST
I finally took out DM when I was heading to see MetallicA last Saturday night. I put in some other tunes, but right after the concert, DM went back in and has stayed in. I guess I still had a lot of energy after the concert and needed to hear the guys again. I really like DM. It's had me hooked since the beginning, unlike St Anger. DM will be replaced soon with Christmas music, but it will be in heavy rotation.
I went to the concert with my brother and we talked about how crazy it is that these guys are so big, but somewhat still seem approachable w/ the fanclub and all that stuff...regular guys. My brother asked me if I was ready to leave the arena after the concert and I said "no." I just wanted to stay there and soak it up. I've seen them 4 or 5 other times and it just blows me away that Lars and James got together from a little ad. in the paper and they created the biggest heavy band of all time. All the buses, motorhomes, their crew, pyro, stage and lighting, it's just crazy and hard to wrap your mind around it. I really wonder what it's like to work with them, whether it be their photographer, guitar or drum tech and be able to see the world, due to some guys bending strings, singing and bangin' on drum skins. Like the guys have said, they were just getting together to just jam and then BAM!

Color me unimpressed with the All Nightmare tracklistings.
Remember when Metallica gave us new material on their singles? Not just already available live stuff? There's got to be some cool rehearsals of Hole in the Sky or Iron Man... Ecstacy of Gold, Remember Tomorrow? Shine? Not even the damn ANL demo.
Pft.
Posted by IS-JD @ 11/14/2008 06:21 PM EST
Agreed. I used to collect all the singles because of demos, RARE live stuff/jams or covers.
Wherever I may roam live? Why not just go with Enter Sandman studio 2008.

Maybe release the acoustic songs form the Bridge benefit instead of doing live versions of the same songs we hear over and over.

I have to agree with JD and manguy. I love the boys as much as anyone but they have milked the fucking black album to death. Acoustic stuff would be great or other DM demos. If I want to hear the old stuff live I'll throw in Binge and Purge or Cunning Stunts. Just my two cents anyways.
Posted by ole @ 11/15/2008 10:05 AM EST
I thought my sarcasm was obvious. I would of course agree with JD, unreleased stuff would be rad, or they could at least give us some slightly more "obscure" live tunes. Some stuff of KEA or something, a cover they don't play that often etc.
Posted by caspian @ 11/15/2008 11:11 AM EST
I knew you were being sarcastic Caspian. It was probably a fun shot at me for when I said something similar and here I am criticizing. Or maybe I was being sarcastic too in the first place? Maybe this is bizarrio world?

You can never be sure about the internet, and besides, this chat/forum thing is just so layered and intricate and meaningful. Will the deception ever stop?
Random rec: If you like your funeral doom, "Blood of the Black Owl" are a rather good band, it seems! Well worth checking out if you like things very slow, heavy and with lots of forest-like hippie undertones.
Posted by caspian @ 11/15/2008 12:06 PM EST
While I agree that some demos on the single would be cool, I have to say it I think criticising the order of the tracks on the album is ridiculous.
Minus Human
Posted by Minus Human @ 11/16/2008 07:19 AM EST
Minus Human, ridiculous? I obviously disagree.
I remember reading about the time and care the band (Lars) was taking in chosing the tracking order and that he felt that he didn't nail it with a previous album (I can't recall which specifically, but was either Stanger or Reload - I think Stanger).
The order of the tracks on an album is becoming a lost art, as digital playlists and shuffle defeats the time and energy spent on creating a flow and theme to an album. My first reacting to Death Magnetic was definitely strongly shaped by what songs I heard first and the order I heard them in. I turned the shuffle off on the iPod and let 'er rip -- I thought I was listening to the first song - I was wrong. Had I heard the first songs on the album in the actual order, I might've not been as impressed with it. But, hey... that's personal taste and opinion (cause I'll take All Nightmare Long over That Was Just Your Life anyday).
Anyhow, I posted an opinion and my alternate tracklist - and I backed up with why I chose certain things. I'm not saying it's better than the actual thing, it just works better for me.

I'm getting the boston show(4 copies actually) for buying the tickets through the club.
I have no problem with the tracklisting myself, it flows well enough for me.
I do have a gripe with the b-sides for the single though. Not that I ever listen to them, but the singles from the load records had all kinds of rare stuff on em. I bought the One single, and every single from TBA, loads, Garage symphony and st. anger. There used to be some decent rarity/collectible type of stuff. But this doesn't amount to much. I'll probably try to find it purely for the collection, but a st. anger demo, garage demo, anything like that.
Don't they realize that most people who would buy those singles likely have the O2 bootlegs already?

Posted by MONSTER @ 11/17/2008 01:30 PM EST
Little article over on blabbermouth about tom arays ripping metallica. Funny, I thought it was Kerry king's job to rip on everyone. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of slayer tunes. But I have heard these guys rip: tallica, megadeth, anthrax and lamb of god. That's just a few. So much for the "metal community".
Posted by kurt @ 11/17/2008 04:57 PM EST
You know the nice thing about MP3, CD players, etc.? You can put the God Damn order any way you want it. I know you guys are trying to express a preference, but it comes off as less opinion and more fact. I read shit about fat ass tom araya talking trash about DM, and it's pathetic. I hear Metallica bashers, bash, and regurgitate the same shit... pathetic. I watch metfans bitch about track orders, and it's pathetic. Nothing is perfect. My only bitch, is that I had to spend a ton of money drinking as lord knows Down is not a good show. I like the music, but "boring" live. I would've given Caspian's left testicle to see Machine Head open for Metallica!
Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 11/17/2008 06:40 PM EST
There is a REASON why Metallica doesn't ask that fans to name their songs/albums or figure out their track listing... I will leave it at that.
Tom Araya jumped off the deep end on this one not too mention he made no valid argument. He is not even close to being the front man James is either.
Posted by Nick @ 11/17/2008 06:43 PM EST
Watching metfans bitch about track orders may be boring, but it's nowhere near as bad as the constant bitching about the bitching, if you will. Yes! Metallica do get criticised. However, they also regularly get praised to the skies by every man and his dog. Quit having sand in your collective vaginas and get over it.
Posted by caspian @ 11/17/2008 07:24 PM EST
Just shows you how classy and mature the boys are. Recall when it was Anselmo bashing them for years, now he is opening for them with Down.
Man he had to swallow both his balls and his pride I am sure, to compensate.
Posted by manguy @ 11/17/2008 09:16 PM EST
Actually one thing I am very pleased with Metallica is that they've always conducted themselves well in interviews- well, as in they don't make a habit of bitching about other bands. It's good to see at least one of the big four conduct themselves with some dignity. (well I guess Anthrax don't bash a lot of bands, but those dudes lost credibility a long, long time ago).
Posted by caspian @ 11/18/2008 05:53 AM EST
You're right caspian. All the shots mustaine, gary holt and king/araya have taken(amonst many other lesser knowns) and you rarely hear them give it back. Lars is pretty much the only one who talks any kind of shit, and I don't think he's done that in a long time.
Scott Ian is pretty much the anthrax mouthpiece and he seems to love everyone, so they don't really bash either.
Posted by kurt @ 11/18/2008 02:43 PM EST
It's easy to bitch about Metallica, because it's easy to bash the best. They are at the top of their genre and possibly the top rock band in the world right now so when you're at the top you;re gonna catch a lot of flack from the wanna be's and never have's.
Posted by Yukoner @ 11/18/2008 04:04 PM EST
And Metallica never really lashes back because they don't need to, their massive record sales and their world record 5 consecutive # 1 debut albums speak loud enough.

Got the new So What, it had a long interview with Rick Rubin in it. Probably the most interesting thing was that he said the record was 90% done for about a year before they finished it. He basically said lars(mostly) liked to dissect the hell out of everything, but in the end mostly stuck with the original stuff anyways. I recall James saying he didn't think it should have taken so long to make the record(without saying lars had anything to do with it). Me thinks lars and axl have some similarities.
He also said he'd work with them again, which is good IMO.
Posted by kurt @ 11/19/2008 08:45 AM EST
wow, did yall see james' fuck up on the day vid(metontour)? i felt embarrassed for him, he did what he was supposed to do and just keep going, some people might not notice and most everyone wont care. it just makes the song/performance human. im just glad that he doesn't use a telepromter as reported by encycmet.com on a regular basis. and his voice sounded horsy, maybe he needed some lubrication for his throught
Posted by curtis moon @ 11/19/2008 02:35 PM EST
So james repeated the first verse twice in TDTNC. Big deal. He is also suffering from bronchitis, so cut him some slack!

Tulsa. Geezus. That was an insanely loud crowd. I don't know if I've ever heard a crowd like that, maybe in San Francisco, but I don't think I've ever seen another like it in 20+ shows. A lot of the time when James was doing a standard "Oh Yeah?!?" or whatever, the crowd was so loud that he couldn't be heard very well. The way the band feeds on great crowds, it really brought the level up. Tulsa should be proud. Band was amazing, watching Kirk try to play a guitar covered in shaving cream and silly string was awesome, because he just kept going.

METALLICA Contemplating Internet Release For Next Album - Nov. 25, 2008
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has told RollingStone.com that the band is contemplating the possibility of an Internet release for its next album. "We're free of our record contract," he said. "We have that element of complete freedom with the next record, so we can do whatever we want. We could do an Internet thing or even put it on Andy Greene's record label." He added, "I wouldn't hold my breath for another METALLICA record. I'm still decompressing and coming down from the whole experience of the last one, but if we spit one out every four or five years that's not so bad."
METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) just six weeks after its release on September 12 by Warner Bros. Records.
"Death Magnetic" debuted atop The Billboard 200 chart, METALLICA's fifth consecutive album to do so, making them the only band in chart history to have five albums debut at No. 1. It breaks the band's tie with THE BEATLES, U2, and the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, all of whom have four No. 1 album debuts. "Death Magnetic" remained at No. 1 for three consecutive weeks.

Posted by MONSTER @ 11/27/2008 10:47 PM EST
I think he and Lars are still cool with each other-I think he even had Lars up to play with them a few years ago when the new GNR last toured. However, I think James and Kirk have little use for him.

Okay, heard Nighmare on the radio for the first time as the new single off Death Magnetic... now when the hell are the boys gonna make a video for this thing?????
Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 11/30/2008 08:55 PM EST
Well, I've given Chinese Democracy a couple of listens. Some nice compositions, but what happened to the rockin tunes? Granted, it's many years later and Axl isn't the angry young man anymore(just the crazy old one), but the more uptempo songs on the record are, for the most part, just wierd. All in all, I think Axl forgot what slash, and more importantly Izzy, meant to that band. Izzy wrote a lot of the best stuff they ever did, but never got the pub slash did.
Posted by kurt @ 12/01/2008 09:26 AM EST
Forgot to mention it, but I saw a commercial for DM last week. It was the 1st time I saw it. I think it was on the Discovery channel, since I watch that frquently.

Any one who wants a gnr history lesson should read Slash's Autobiography "Slash". There is a couple cool metallica stories in there. Easy read, very conversational. I can't beleive Slash is still alive after all the crazy shit he used to do.
Posted by ole @ 12/01/2008 01:59 PM EST
I'm not impressed with Chinese Democracy at all. After a couple listens to the full album I erased like half the songs on the album so they wouldn't be on my playlist. No songs on that album that will be remembered.
Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 12/01/2008 03:27 PM EST
It just pisses me off that Axl even calls its Guns N Roses. It should be Axl Rose or something totally different. Just cause your the singer doesn't mean you are equal to the name of the band. This is not Guns, it is Axl N Friends at best.
Posted by Nick @ 12/01/2008 04:49 PM EST
NoCreativeNameGuy, you said it in a nutshell. None of those songs will be remembered over time. Some decent stuff, but none that come close to the original stuff.
Posted by kurt @ 12/01/2008 05:38 PM EST
its only selling because of the brand name...u take guns n roses off the CD and it would sell less than half but it probably would be criticized less....
Posted by xino @ 12/01/2008 07:10 PM EST
I used to be a huge guns fan, and for about 5 years THEY WERE THE SHIT. But for axl to call Chinese Democracy a guns n roses album would be like James putting out a solo album and calling it Metallica. A "band" is a collective group of musicians that have worked together creatively over a period of time. While I don't think Chinese Democracy is an awesome album, I don't think there isn't any decent material on it. I really like the title track, and better and IRS aren't bad either. But I had the mindset when I purchased Chinese Democracy, that it wasn't a guns n' roses album, but rather an Axl Rose solo album. None of the former members of the band have had much success since they all parted ways, (Axl included), and I don't think they ever really will. Velvet Revolver's Contraband had some really good songs on it, just as Chinese Democracy does,(just my opinion) but neither one remotely compares to Appetite, Lies, or the Illusion albums. I keep hope alive that in this crummy economy we're in will force the guys to get back together for one more go around. Hey everyone said the eagles would never reunite, and then they released Hell Freezes Over and went on a massdive tour and made a bunch of cake. Money talks and bull-shit walks, right? Guns will always be my 2nd favorite band regardless of the fact that they were so short lived. Just my two cents.
God Country Metallica 4 life
Posted by ole @ 12/01/2008 08:01 PM EST
Ole you make a good point about Axl and Velvet being decent, but not great. I think they need each other for that greatness. Axl needs Velvets licks and beats which I think to lack, while Velvet needs Axl's polished sound and perfectionism.
Posted by Nick @ 12/01/2008 11:37 PM EST
Hey Xino, just checking Rubber Dreams, very nice man, very Gilmour-ish, really dig it. keep it up!
Posted by EPDA @ 12/02/2008 09:24 AM EST
I completely agree nick. I always felt gyped that I couldn't see guns together in concert before the break-up. All I have to go on is the few live dvds they have. I metallica/guns tour part 2 has always been a pipe dream of mine.
Posted by ole @ 12/02/2008 01:47 PM EST
Ole, I saw them twice. First time opening for Aerosmith(permanent vacation tour) and they were awesome. Second time, on the GNR/Metallica stadium tour. I don't remember it being as good as when they were openers. But that may well be because metallica came on before them and just crushed foxboro stadium. I was into metallica since MOP, but that show really made me think of metallica first, everyone else vying for second place. The Guns set just didn't hold up after tallica, I even left during paradise city(last song of the night), and that is the only concert that I have not at least stayed at the doorway watching the last song.
BTW, faith no more was pretty good and pretty weird opening for them. And GNR made everyone wait almost an extra hour, for which the cameramen in the stadium resorted to filming the titties in the crowd to calm everyone down.
Posted by kurt @ 12/02/2008 02:27 PM EST
I too saw the Met-GnR tour. Loved Faith No More, was weird seeing Metallica with it still kinda light out. Left about 3 songs into GnR's set... they were bloody awful.
Posted by IS-JD @ 12/02/2008 02:48 PM EST
JD, I chalked it up to all the extra fluff, like the backup singers, wasn't there multiple keyboard players and even some horns or something? It just wasn't the same band(of course izzy and adler were gone, but I don't think sorum for adler was a downgrade). I know I won't be bothering to see them if they come around again.
I am going to the boston show in January and got the tickets through metclub. It's that thing where you have to pick up the on-call(or whatever it is) tickets there at the metclub booth. I've never done that before(always had the ticks mailed to me). So, my qustion is 1) what time does the whole gig start? and 2) do I have to be there from the very begining to pick up the ticks at the booth? (because I could really care less to see the sword).
Posted by kurt @ 12/02/2008 04:35 PM EST
I am sorry to hear that some of you didn't get your money's worth with GNR. I know I mentioned it earlier, but I'm going to go ahead and plug the slash autobiography. Slash gives a lot of details about the Guns/Metallica tour, and how unprofessional Axl was. Slash gives big props to Metallica, more specifically about their work ethic, their punctuality, and their passion. By the end of the tour Slash said he could hardly look Het or Lars in the eyes because he was so embarrased by Axl's constant controversy. I've always thought Axl to be a phenomenal lyricist and singer but I think he might possibly be the biggest turd on planet earth. Anyways the book is great for any guns fan as it let's you into all that went down with the formation and destruction of GNR.
Posted by ole @ 12/02/2008 05:35 PM EST
the new megastain album, "united abonitations" actually kicks some ass. i think it came out last year but i didnt see it until recently. there is still the lame ass "talking to the microphone" crap and it is way over politically driven. the riffs chomp and bite with a double edged sword and the soloing is close to the old shit. to me it still sounds like watered down metallica but if it came before DM, it set the bar for metallica; not to finally let megadave's coinciding release become more publicly accepted and relevant. dave kicked out dave elefson (bass) after all these years, i read somewhere that there has been like 19 members of megadeth. seems to me that someone has attachment anxiety or control problems. has anyone heard or have and opinion on united abominations?
Posted by Curtis Moon @ 12/02/2008 07:30 PM EST
I'm clearly missing something on Chinese Democracy. The title track is pretty good, the second and third are ok, and then the whole thing just falls apart, particularly by the 5th song when the disco beat starts. So much falsetto, when you have an arguably interesting voice? And then all of the songs with the immense production, but nothing behind them. I was really hoping for something great or at least good, but this thing is mostly unlistenable. Even when it isn't just flat out bad, it's as if someone said to the band "hey, play chords while I push this button that says 'November Rain Overproduction effects and song structure.' Then keep playing for about 4 minutes while I make vocal noises that used to be interesting."
United Abominations was a much better album than Dave had a right to put out after firing Ellefson (I always loved the way little Dave played bass) and some really cool stuff on there. Too much of the speak instead of sing thing, but Dave deserves credit for being able to even play after the problems with his hands. That took a ton of effort to work through and get back to being Dave. Still a great songwriter, too. A friend of mine used to point out that the way he was kicked out sucked, but two great bands exist because of it, so the ends sort of justify.

according to marty friedman, ellefson wasn't a good musician, in the sense that for him to record his bass lines in time it would take him so long, also the reason behind dave kicking him out is because he was asking for too much money or something like that....

I've always liked The Day That Never Comes, but I've been listening to it a lot more laltely.

I think that Rubin should have been nominated for producer of the year.I haven't listened to an album this good in years.
After long and careful consideration I have finally come up with the list of my favorite songs on Death Magnetic top to bottom.
1. Nightmare (perhaps my favorite song ever) 2.The End of the Line 3.That was just your life 4.Cyanide 5.The Day that never comes 6.The Judas Kiss 7.Suicide and Redemption 8.Broken Beaten Scarred 9.Unforgiven III 10.My Apocalypse
Posted by ole @ 12/05/2008 02:03 AM EST
I think the reason that I like nightmare so much is because it is in dropped D tuning. I have racked my brain hard and I can't think of any other song that they have played on an any album in dropped d. I know St. Anger was dropped C# or something, but I'm sure it wasn;t dropped d. I am glad they went back to E tuning for the rest of DM, but I definitely wouldn't mind them dropping to D for a couple songs the next time they record. If nightmare is any indication of the sound they can get om D, I think it would work well for them.
Posted by ole @ 12/05/2008 02:11 AM EST
If anyone can remember another song Metallica has done in dropped D, could they let me know?
Posted by ole @ 12/05/2008 02:13 AM EST
im not quite sure why but they had a smaller stage in calgary tonight..plus it had a mini snake pit, which i got into, so there was no crowd around me, easily got front row in there. also they said no professional protography, which i understand..but they were taking regular digital cameras from people..including me..does that happen at all metallica concerts? Also heres the set..nothing too suprising.. That Was Just Your Life The End Of The Line Creeping Death Harvester Of Sorrow One Broken, Beat And Scarred Cyanide Sad But True ...And Justice For All Wherever I May Roam The Day That Never Comes Master Of Puppets Fight Fire With Fire Nothing Else Matters Enter Sandman - - - - - - - - Last Caress Breadfan Seek and Destroy

Posted by EET FUK @ 12/05/2008 06:44 AM EST
Better than you won a grammy? I forgot and/or never payed attention to that. That may be the worst song they ever did. Seriously, when I've considered the tracklist if the loads were only one record, that song would never make it.
I am surprised about how many people don't seem to like My Apocolypse that much. I love that song, but I've seen quite a few people say they don't care for it. What is it that you guys don't like about it?
Posted by kurt @ 12/05/2008 08:34 AM EST
Drop D? I thought Sad But True and Devils Dance were as well.
Posted by manguy @ 12/05/2008 09:26 AM EST
Ole I think God That Failed is drop d as well. And Eet Fuk is right thingy is in d. As for the tour. I talked to Toby the Guy who runs the club when I was at the Denver show. I asked him about the tour, he said fall of 09 should be the next leg of the US tour. Even though it sucks to wait that long to see them again at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Posted by theoutlawthatfailed @ 12/05/2008 04:05 PM EST
One did win a Grammy award. When Metallica lost out to Jethro Tull, it was the ...AJFA album that was nominee. But, the next year One itself won. Yeah, it doesn't really make much sense, but these are the Grammys and that's what happens with them.
They then won the next two years for Stone Cold Crazy and TBA. Since then they've won for Better Than You, Whiskey in the Jar (Hard Rock, not Metal), the S&M version of The Call of Ktulu (Rock Instrumental) and St. Anger (the song, not the album).
They'll win the Metal categroy this year as well (chances are, they're the only band nominated that most voters have even heard of), and I think their chances are pretty good in Rock Instrumental. Coldplay will probably beat them out for Rock Album, though.

Oh and Rubin did get a Producer of the Year nomination. DM was one of five credits listed under his name.
Also, Mark, I've heard that because of the curved roof of the Saddledome, Metallica had to adjust their stage setup. I think if you do a news search through Google or whatever you could probably find some info on it.

As far as grammys are concerened, it's all a bunch of huey... that said, I hope they beat out coldplay. Most overrated group of all time. "You know how I know you're gay? You like coldplay!"

You're right Thing that should not be, and this is also the same panel that gave the flute master Jethro Tull a hard rock nod over Metallica. Does anyone know if it is the band that submits their entry to the grammy nomination comitee or the Grammy people themselves who choose?

In setlist news that I think a lot of us expected, the crowd on the second night in Calgary got....the premiere of All Nightmare Long.
And get this, they did drop a DM song to play it. Instead it was played in that post-Sad/pre-Day two-song slot. So yes, that means they did SIX Death Magnetic songs.

That should be *they DIDN'T drop* not "did drop" as I wrote. Damn typos!

I was there..All Nightmare Long was AMAZING live!

Yeah, there has to be another leg of North America. They haven't played San Francisco. (Sure, they're playing Oakland, but I choose to believe that it only counts when they plan SF itself.) BTW, if you've never seen them in SF, do yourself a favor and do the travel. The home town crowd is insane. Grammys are funny. After the AJFA/Jethro Tull fiasco, which really just proved that the Grammy's didn't understand heavy metal, the voters just figured "We got in trouble for not voting for this band that one time, so we'll vote for it this time." They are certainly not going to listen to a metal album, so they're just voting for the name they've heard before. I remember I stopped paying attention when there was a nomination for "Bellz" based on the Live Shit performance from Seattle. It was something like 1995 or 1996, and they were getting nominated for a 7 year old perfomance of a 12 year old song that had been released in a box set 2 years before. The grammy's just really wanted to have a nomination for Metallica. My guess is that Apocalypse was submitted since it was short enough that the voters might listen to it most of the way through. Given their past record, I would guess that "Lars Ulrich of Metallica farts the Irish Spring jingle" would get a nomination. BTW, if memory serves (and I'm old enough that it probably doesn't) the song that won the grammy after the AJFA loss was "Stone Cold Crazy", not One. On Year and a Half, you can see them sort of half heartedly cheering while Bob Rock boos during the announcement.

Devils Dance, Sad But True and God that Failed are not in Drop D, they are all a full step down.

Azrael, Now that you mention it, the Stone Cold Crazy thing does ring a bell. It's also hard to believe that Cunning Stunts came out 10 years ago this month. I remember getting that on DVD and thought it was really cool to leave the camera angles on each of the members during a couple of songs. The One pyro is crazy with my surround sound.
Cool you were there for Nightmare's debut, Mark! I'm guessing we'll see a vid. of it on Metontour soon.

Both One and Stone Cold Crazy won. You can follow the link below to do a search on winners.
I saw a list of songs submitted, and IIIRC, All Nightmare Long was submitted along with My Apocalypse. They probably chose the latter because it's shorter and if Metallica ends up performing on the show, they don't have to give them an 8 mintue slot. One thing that surprised me is that they didn't submit anything in the Hard Rock category (I looked). BTW, The Day That Never Comes was submitted in the rock and general.
my band plays whiskey in drop d, as for the other songs; sad, thingy, god, devil's, they might be a whole step down but they might be dropped to d. unless you see how james and kirk play them you can not be sure. you can play any song in any key or tuning, you simply transpose into different posotions. do not go by tab books no matter how official they say they are, they are very close but a lot of the time they are in weird positions or at least different ones.

What is up with this new Kirk video .... does anyone know any details of what he's referring to, and what is on these videos ? and when he says they're using the footage, is he referring to the video for All Nightmare Long?
I do think Lars is not playing up to the level of the other guys. There was a couple of double kick drum parts in the song (studio version) that I didn't hear him do in the live version.
Pretty awesome for the 1st time. This song gives James a little rest for vocals, but the riffs are crazy. Kirk did a great job on the solos & Rob's in the pocket. Lars didn't do to bad. I like the mini snakepit.

What a total trip of a video! Something Rob Zombie would of directed! I got so into the video I pretty much forgot about the music!
Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 12/07/2008 11:15 PM EST
That video was pretty cool. 9 minutes went by fast. This must've been the footage Kirk was talking about.

Curtins Moon: I can tell you those songs are all a step down, EVEN Wiskey... this I know.

WOW that video is creepy! lol awesome

Definitely something different from them. I never expected that. The first performance of Nightmare was pretty damn good too. What shocked me even more was that they played it in addition to the other 5 DM songs. I thought they would swap one out, not add it in.
