09/17/2008 Entry: "WELL"

We're having some server issues, we are working on them. You should be able to post comments in this thread... (and please do!).

Think of what's going on here as clipping, but for our website!

A little more on the Death Magentic audio problems from our good man, The General:

What began with fans complaining about the audio quality of lead single The Day That Never Comes has snowballed following the release of the Death Magnetic CD, which seems to mark a whole new level in the Loudness War.

Mastering engineers sacrificing dynamic range in the pursuit of louder and louder sounding CDs is nothing new, but the general consensus amongst fans and critics on hundreds of internet forums seems to be that Death Magnetic has taken this a step too far.

...and allegedly from Ted Jensen, the audio engineer who did the mastering:
I'm certainly sympathetic to your reaction, I get to slam my head against that brick wall every day. In this case the mixes were already brick-walled before they arrived at my place. Suffice to say I would never be pushed to overdrive things as far as they are here.

Believe me I'm not proud to be associated with this one, and we can only hope that some good will come from this in some form of backlash against volume above all else.

We do think the audio problems are there, although they may not be immediately obvious. The lack of dynamics is a detriment to the album, the distortion you hear is not always the distortion that you should be hearing.... I'd also love to be able to make out a little more the layers that are present but not real listenable due to the "brick wall;" ie, it's very difficult to hear the orchestra/keys in the Unforgiven III once the band kicks in.

Remix please?

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/17/2008 06:28 PM EST

I have been listening to the Guitar Hero 3 rip for the last two days and I can honestly say that there is a difference. The best way to describe it is this: Take a normal CD from your pouch and throw in it a stereo and turn it up to medium volume and listen to it for a while. Then put in Death Magnetic (or Californication) and listen to how much louder it is. This difference is what all the complaining is about. The sound and layers/sounds/lyrics are lost/buried due to the volume of the CD as a whole. The riffs and lyrics and everything are rockin'. I still can't get enough. I need to write the metclub and see if I can get it on cassette. I've heard 500,000+ albums sold.

First and foremost I love and respect Metallica and their latest album, DEATH MAGNETIC is musically an outstanding achievement! But I have noticed that Metallica's albums(including DM) have always lacked in sound quality, whether it be under produced or over produced or just plain piss poor production. I don't think they'll remix or re-release DM, refer to the St.Anger album. Metallica moves forward, no U-turns.

Let's face it, Metallica has been cursed. The production quality is flawed on all of their 9 studio albums of original music. Metallica got it right twice in their career with the Garage albums(just ask Rick Rubin) and here's hoping they'll finally get it right a third time (someday soon)...I'm really hoping their tenth studio album in 2010(it would make sense) will be what it is...TEN, a perfect 10!!!

That being said, they still are and always have been and always will be my favorite band of all time!!! Metallica are gifted songwriters and they write the best music my ears have ever heard!!!...peace bros.

I'm not sure if I got a good CD or what, but I think it sounds okay in my car. I haven't listened to it with headphones. One thing that's strange is that I usually keep my volume on 7 or 8 when I drive, but I turn DM up to 10 or 11.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/18/2008 12:59 AM EST

The production on Black-Garage certainly isn't "cursed", far from it, in fact.

I'm glad the mastering engineer has made that sort of statement, I know if I was him I'd be frustrated with some square wave action before I was even able to compress it.

yahoo.com reports:

Rock Pantheon
Week Ending Sept. 14, 2008: Metallica And The Hard Rock Pantheon
Posted Wed Sep 17, 2008 11:07am PDT by Paul Grein in Chart Watch
Metallica's studio first album in more than five years, Death Magnetic, enters The Billboard 200 at #1. It's Metallica's fifth #1 album, a total topped by only one hard rock band in history. Led Zeppelin amassed seven #1 albums between Led Zeppelin II in 1969 and How The West Was Won in 2003. Van Halen is the only other hard rock band to land five #1 albums. The group, which like Metallica was formed in Los Angeles, topped the chart with five albums between 5150 in 1986 and Best Of Volume 1 in 1996.

Metallica surpasses these other top bands in two respects. Metallica is the first hard rock act to reach #1 with five consecutive #1 studio albums. Led Zeppelin and Van Halen each had four straight #1 studio sets. Also, Metallica is the top-selling hard rock band since Nielsen/SoundScan took over tracking for Billboard in May 1991. AC/DC is in second place. (Led Zeppelin is #41. Van Halen ranks #71.)

Death Magnetic posted first-week sales of 490,000. Impressively, the band ran up this total in just three days, between the release of the album on Friday and the close of the tracking period on Sunday. This is the fourth highest first-week sales tally so far in 2008, behind albums by Lil Wayne, Coldplay and Jonas Brothers. This is the heftiest first-week total for a metal-edged hard rock band since Tool's 10,000 Days bowed in May 2006 with sales of 564,000 copies.

Billboard's Keith Caulfield reports that Metallica is the first group to see five of its albums debut at #1 on The Billboard 200. Runners-up, with four albums that bowed at #1, are the Beatles, U2 and Dave Matthews Band.

All five of Metallica's #1 albums have had first-week sales in excess of 400,000 copies. The band's eponymous 1991 album, widely known as The Black Album, started with sales of 598,000. Load established the band's personal best when it had first-week sales of 680,000 in 1996. Reload started with 435,000 in 1997. St. Anger, which also had a Friday release, bowed with sales of 418,000 in 2003. It's extraordinary for an act to retain a fan base this large and avid over such a long period. Most of the other acts that enjoyed first-week sales in excess of 500,000 copies in the first half of the ‘90s are either inactive (Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd) or haven't had first-week sales of this magnitude in years (Pearl Jam, Snoop Doggy Dogg). (Garth Brooks is believed to have had first-week sales above 400,000 earlier in this decade, but it was when albums sold in only one chain, such as his Wal-Mart exclusives, weren't eligible for the chart.)

Metallica first cracked the top 10 with ...And Justice For All in October 1988, giving them a nearly 20-year span of top 10 albums. The band first hit the chart 24 years ago this month with Ride The Lightning. They're the group with the longest history to land a #1 album since Eagles, which hit #1 in November-more than 35 years after they first charted with their debut album, Eagles.

Look, maybe I am just tone deaf and hard of hearing but I have no problems with the sound on this album. Quit bitching. This ain't St.Anger.

Posted by Unnamed Fan @ 09/18/2008 02:16 PM EST

Well, I just got the GHIII version and I'm gonna play it in my car later to hear what the fuss is all about. I can slightly hear what is being talked about, but now I want to compare.

Regardless, the songs are great.

Posted by kurt @ 09/18/2008 04:33 PM EST

Anyone have a link to the GH version?

Posted by Mark @ 09/18/2008 05:23 PM EST

I googled death magnetic guitar hero 3 rapidshare, and it led to the link.

Posted by KURT @ 09/18/2008 05:35 PM EST

I understand there are some clipping and distortion issues, but I still think it is way overblown and does not take away from my listening experience. Some examples...I have a number of friends that are musicians, have put out CD's and dont spend time trolling the net and not even once have they brought up the sound. I dont want to ruin it for them by saying something. Reviewers did not mention sound and now on the met board there is this huge push of kids telling people to write to magazines and blabbermouth and using a quote by Ted which I am not convinced is even real. So now the net is full of negative comments perpetuated by Metallica fans!! It kind of blows me away. Had I never read there was a sound issue I never would of thought of it. We now have Metallica fans trying to hurt the band. I read some guy saying it is Rolling Stone, they are fucked now!!!! As if he gloating that Metallica is getting slammed. It is all to much for me. I dont get it. Maybe it is a younger generation of fans who were spoiled as kids and have a if I dont get what I asked for I am going to kick and scream mentality.

They won't remix DM because it still is a really GREAT and KILLER sounding album! It's the best music out there. It's a near perfect sounding album. My St.Anger analogy was poor, my point was with all the backlash from fans, they didn't change a thing about the St.Anger album, except for maybe the SKOM single EDIT. Why would they change a thing about DM, when it's their best sounding studio album of original music so far...and let's not forget, it's the #1 selling album in the whole fuckin' world!!!

Posted by OneMinuteCloserToDeath @ 09/18/2008 11:35 PM EST

Now this a really cool idea, Metallica should just offer the GH3 version somewhere on their website as a downloadable purcahase...I know die hard fans like myself would buy it! I would shell over 10 beans for it...enjoy it the way it was intended to be.

In the meantime I still haven't found a decent torrent of DM GH3, if anyone has a link to a true, clear and crisp version without parts of the song missing(mainly guitar notes I'm referring to)...much appreciated...peace bros.

Posted by OneMinuteCloserToDeath @ 09/18/2008 11:47 PM EST

Yeah, it's unfortunate that this is the story, but as UF pointed out, this ain't St. Anger. I'm plenty happy with a slightly flawed DM. If they want to turn it down a bit and sell a remaster, I'll buy that too. I have the GH version, and it does sound about half as loud. I need to get it onto my good stereo to see how good it sounds. But the cd version is perfect for my car stereo, so it's almost like they could have two versions, one for people who can hear and give a shit, and one for people who just want it loud.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/18/2008 11:54 PM EST

well, I'm normally not a picky audiophile type, but the difference is like turning on a light switch in a dimly lit room.

It doesn't sound like St Anger at all (of course), but they REALLY screwed up the mix when you compare the actual CD's sound compared to the Guitar Hero tracks. Imagine hearing And Justice For All with full bass.... yeah it's that different and then some. Trust me, I have both and it's sad that whoever mixed this (not Jenson), has shit for brains. Metallica had nothing to do with that, as they were in Europe as it was being mixed.

Posted by Tipper @ 09/18/2008 11:59 PM EST

does anybody here REALLY care.....seriously...Is anybody taking the CD back to the store here and asking for a refund or are you still playing it everyday. If it bothers you that much eq it with the bass up and take some treb out, then you should be able to turn it up louder depending your audio system.

Posted by marcus @ 09/19/2008 07:06 AM EST

Marcus, I wish it was that easy. It's just as bad as the Justice mix. So tell me, can you fix Justice by adjusting your equalizer? Will it let you hear the orchestra parts on Unforgiven 3? no and no.

Of course we will play it every day, that doesn't mean it's perfect. In fact, when I heard the difference I think the CD is unacceptable. So what do you do? Download the GH3 version. It's better and you should give it a listen before you denounce the opinions of the many.

Posted by Tipper @ 09/19/2008 07:32 AM EST

Well, I got the GHII version and forgot to put it in my car. I think the ipod will show me the clearest difference.

Buuut, listening to the separate S&R's, I hadn't realized James did the first half of the soloing. I'm so used to Kirk handling the solos that I hadn't really thought about it. I was pretty impressed. The CD version definitely took the best parts of each of em, but it was cool to hear each of them doing the entire solo.

Posted by kurt @ 09/19/2008 09:41 AM EST

Tipper... the Justice mix is another animal altogether; The Death Magentic problem starts with one very unique (and somewhat modern) problem: the entire thing is mixed too loudly.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/19/2008 11:06 AM EST

Does anyone not think AJFA is a great album. Bass or no Bass, it is bad ass. It is funny to joke about it("AJFA, Now with Bass!!!" but it does not change the fact that it was a classic metal album. Same for DM.

For Gods sake lets just be happy there is a 9th studio album to listen to. They could be just releasing a bunch of greatest hits re-hash of their past. Instead we have the likely metal album of the year and another trip to the Grammy's. Please try to keep this in perspective.

Posted by Unnamed Fan @ 09/19/2008 12:20 PM EST

The difference between the mix of Justice and Death Magnetic is that Justice still doesn't distort after all these years. Everything that's MEANT to be audible, is audible.

No one is denying the songwork or musicianship behind either album. Well, I could nitpick... (because 20 years after Justice came out, and after over listening to it (wearing out some 5 cassette copies of it way back when, I don't find it as listenable in large doses as I once did; That's mostly due to the very dry sound and thinness that album's sound has... I still love it to death!!).

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/19/2008 01:37 PM EST

I'm not offended by the sound issue, the music is beautiful.

But I'll tell you who should be: Lars, James, Kirk and Rob. Unless they wanted it that way(and I can't for the life of me figure out how any version of a final product would be released without their approval), they should be really pissed off at the team of people who put that together. So kudos to Rick Rubin for helping them create such great music(the most important thing of all), and boos for not having everything about this record be perfect.

Posted by kurt @ 09/19/2008 01:53 PM EST

One question I have is the fact that the Metallicamp played it for their friends and no one mentioned the sound issues. Maybe they didn't hear a mastered version. Also, what about the reviewers from all the magazines like Metal Hammer, Kerrang, The Quietus reviewer, Rolling Stone and so on?

kurt, did you listen to any of your 5-LP? If so, how does it sound? My 2-LP will remain sealed unless I could be so lucky enough to get it autographed by the boys.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/19/2008 02:23 PM EST

So what is the best way to get the GH mix of the album? Can I just go to the store and pick up the version that includes the GH stuff? I have heard the different mixes here on the web and THERE is quite a difference. I LOVE the album either way

Posted by Cooper @ 09/19/2008 03:15 PM EST

Thingy, I have no idea. I have not played them. I actually do have a turntable, however I haven't used it in(long pause to count)18 years. I'm pretty sure the needle needs replacing. I bought it pretty much as a collector's item kind of thing, so I suspect I may never hear what it sounds like.

My coffin box is on backorder until who knows when. Some people must have it though, cause there is already the "making of dm" available to download. And yes I have downloaded it(already paid for it, so i don't care) and have watched the first few minutes. Pretty cool, all the stuff I have seen so far focuses on the first song. I think it's gonna sort of take it track by track.

Posted by kurt @ 09/19/2008 03:31 PM EST

I think they should re-release the album and allow us to exchange the POS version. Prior to the album's release, I complained to iTunes about the sound quality and got re-funded for both singles that I downloaded. Metallica should do the same.

Posted by die on your feet @ 09/19/2008 03:40 PM EST

If the sound on the CD is what the band wanted then I would be happy and would live with it but I really would like to hear what they have to say about it....especialy Lars. Overall I think the current sound state of the album has a live sound to it....anyone agree?

Posted by Cooper @ 09/19/2008 03:48 PM EST

I think it definately has a live feel to it. Rubin told the boys to stand up & play when recording like they do at a live show.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/19/2008 06:19 PM EST

Very much a live feel to the album, I just wish it wasn't such a loud mix. I know, bitch bitch bitch. Seriously, it's like a dinner that has a little too much garlic when you're a fan of garlic. It's not bad or something you hate, it's just a little overwhelming. Like I've said, it sounds great on my crappy factory stereo in my car. My headphones cry for mercy when I turn it up, though. I keep thinking I'm going to blow the speakers.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/19/2008 09:30 PM EST

You really think that they will re-mix the album ? And if they did, will the fans like it ?

I don't think ANY Re-Mix of DM will bring satisfaction to the majority, some of them don't like the Black album, some AJFA, some kill'em. it seems that you can't satisfy ALL.

Lets leave it that way, fans downloading GH versions , edit the EQ , burn it on CD then they can hear it the way they like . actually i hope Metallica will release every album flat sound and include sound editing software with the CD and let the fans produce it the way they like at there homes . sound ridiculous but it will elemental sound bitching .

Posted by Laziale @ 09/19/2008 10:34 PM EST

u didnt understand me tipper. i hear the mix, ive sat in a recording studio, i know its loud. but is there nothing else to talk about.....the msg board has been going on about it for about a month now. r we carrying it into 2009...

Posted by marcus @ 09/20/2008 10:55 AM EST

I think it's funny how many audio specialists there are on this board. I also love how the news section posts completely unsubstantiated quotes from "supposed" audio engineers. I mean, we can all make up quotes if we want to, but that doesn't make them true. A link to an interview with the guy would be a nice touch.

Posted by Jim @ 09/20/2008 11:23 AM EST

Doesn't matter how many quotes there are. We can go on about how much we all know about audio, but as long as you have ears you can understand "wow, this thing distorts horribly and overall sounds like poo". Those who say this is a great/killer/etc sounding album seriously need their ears checked

Anyone else agree that Load had the best production? Nice guitar tones, massive drums, very dynamic?

Posted by caspian @ 09/20/2008 12:29 PM EST

there are some rumours about kirk leaving the band. Anyone knows details?

Posted by endofdays @ 09/20/2008 01:44 PM EST

The Garage Inc. album has their best production. LOAD sounds a bit (or a lot) over produced. It really depends on what you like/your personal preference. Do you enjoy realistic or artificial/fantasy type of sounding albums. In other words, on Garage Inc., they sound more like a band playing the songs live as opposed to LOAD. I prefer realistic sounding albums...DEATH MAGNETIC is still is their most realistic sounding album of ORIGINAL music, even though it's flawed. It's kind of too bad, Metallica (with Rick Rubin's production wizardry) played their hearts and souls out on DM...only to be tainted by a poor judgment call(s) on the final mix of the album. When we insert DM into the our CD players and push the play button, I think Metallica wanted the sound of the album to jump out of our speakers and kick us in the teeth, which it does. But as we have a noticed, having the loudest album of all time doesn't always make it better. A lot of stuff on DM is lost due to the ear crushing sounds. As a hardcore and faithful Metallica fan for many, many years, this is a very frustrating time...it's a hard pill to swallow and as every day passes, I'm still finding it difficult to accept. DEATH MAGNETIC is near perfection, so close but yet so far...bring on the remixed version alrighty, this CD version is too painful to endure any longer(I think I'm kidding here)...oh well, there's always Metallica's 10th studio album that's waiting in the wings, 2010 anyone?...peace bros.

Posted by OneMinuteCloserToDeath @ 09/20/2008 02:41 PM EST

"I don't like what we did on our latest studio album, "Death Magnetic". To tell you the thruth, I understand all those people which blaim us for the lack of solos in it. Yeah, I really do." - said Kirk Hammett of Metallica. "I wrote like fifty to sixty ten-minutes long solo riffs for the album. But Lars [Ulrich] said he is angry for me, because no one can hear his drum beats and enjoy them as much as my solos because my solos are too loud. Anyway, Axl made me a call a few weeks ago and asked me to join GN'R to help with "Chinese Democracy" recording." So, unsatisfaction was one of the main reason for his decision to quit from Metallica for a time.

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/20/2008 02:53 PM EST

Man, the GHIII version sounds really good; far better then the retail version. Guitars are heavier, bass is more audible, the whole thing is far less fatiguing. Perhaps they played the GHIII mixes to the reviewers?

Posted by caspian @ 09/21/2008 01:33 AM EST

This site is getting very dumb...

Posted by Nick @ 09/21/2008 04:17 AM EST

I just downloaded DEath Magnetic Guitar Hero yesterday (FLAC).. and my conclusion is.. i still like the CD version.. cause mine is not cliping.

Unforgiven 3 gh version, we get to hear the little solo during the chorus.. but the horn is weird especially during the forgive me forgive me not part.

We cannot hear the little solo layer in the soft part of Cyanide.

Lastly I prefer the CD version of Suicide and Redemption.

PS: I can hear the bass in CD version.
and GH version db is too little.

Posted by ZeNoTaLLiCA @ 09/21/2008 08:17 AM EST

Hey ZeNoTaLLiCA, play as BASS next time... Thats all you will hear. That's the way the GH and RB games work, if you play guitar, they stick out more than the others.

Posted by DUH! @ 09/21/2008 10:48 AM EST

I'm with ZeNoTaLLiCA, I've downloaded 2 different versions of the GH3 version and been playing them with the CD version back and forth. I actually think the bass is to loud on the GH3 versions and just sounds a little "dull" compared to the CD.

I've yet to hear the distortion that everyone is talking about, unless you have to crank it to ear damaging volume to get it which I dont.

Fuck it all boys, sick of this talk!!!! Enjoy the kick ass album and can't wait to chant "SHOW! YOUR! SCARS!" at the next show!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/21/2008 01:14 PM EST

Whatever version Metallica played to the reviewers or anyone for that matter including themselves and Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins could not of been the CD version. These guys are all trained musicians with an excellent ear for music, they would of picked up on the excess distortion/clipping/lack of dynamics, for sure. I don't even think Metallica played the final CD mix before the release date, they must be pissed off now, I would be. Somebody butchered their baby, I can guarantee you, this was not the way Metallica had intended for the CD version of DEATH MAGNETIC to be heard...I'm very interested to find out what Metallica has to say about the current CD version. They should demand that a new edition of DM be released to the public A.S.A.P...I bought 2 copies of the CD and I've already returned the 1 copy that was still sealed for a full refund...Best Buy wouldn't accept the opened CD, even though it's a defective item...at least not until Metallica/Warner bros. admits that it is a legitimate mistake and announce it as a recalled/defective CD and a full refund or exchange for the corrected/updated CD will be given out. METALLICA SPEAK OUT ABOUT THIS, YOUR FANS ARE WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. THANK YOU...peace bros.

when the hell did everyone become sound engineers???

I own the CD, I HAVE NOT HEARD DISTORTION and still love it.

Posted by Joe Cool @ 09/21/2008 06:09 PM EST

If Metallica never went back to remaster St. Anger which DID sound bad and every admits to it... why would they go back with DM when it sounds fine to my ears.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/21/2008 06:42 PM EST

Yeah, the FLAC version of the GH3 rip out there are pretty much all flat (haven't been equalised) so that's why they sound the way they do.

Just mess around with your equaliser settings and those versions come to life (I did mine in Sound Forge 9.0 and just re-saved the files). I've got mine sounding something approaching TBA sound standards. To my ear that is a glorious thing.

TALLICA RULE THE WORLD

Posted by Waverley73 @ 09/21/2008 07:53 PM EST

You can't hear the crackling/distortion/clipping noises, well I guess it's time to get them ears checked, you may have a hearing problem. Unless of course you fluked out and purchased one of the few flawless sounding DEATH MAGNETIC CD's that may be in circulation.

As far as St.Anger goes, that's the way Metallica and Bob Rock wanted that CD/album to sound at that time, it had nothing to do with the final mastering/mixing of the music to make it fit on a CD. Which is the case with DEATH MAGNETIC, somebody screwed up royally. I'm not knocking DM at all, I'm just pointing out the obvious. Whether it's the compression of the music files to CD format or the CD is just mixed/mastered way too loud. Hence, clipping. Flawed. Fact.

You don't have to be a sound engineer to know when something doesn't sound quite right.

Posted by OneMinuteCloserToDeath @ 09/21/2008 08:20 PM EST

Is this distortion/clipping issue only noticable if you turn the volume WAAAAAAAY up? Because it all sounds fine to me. I don't crank anything up to where my house rumbles or some shit like that. Somebody answer that please. Again, it's sounds ok to me!

Posted by Dragonboots2005 @ 09/21/2008 10:33 PM EST

I'm tired of the subject. The album is great, but could sound better for people who have the ability to hear the problem.
Here's an explanation of the issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_War
If you don't believe the problem exists, open the song files in Audio Forge and look at the waveforms. The cd is basically slammed to the max. For comparison check TBA. If you can't hear it, that's fine, but the issue exists. I have a suspicion that it's done to make the album sound as distorted as a concert even when played soft, and if so, fine. I don't think it's an accident, but I think it's too bad that the story about a great album is being overcome by the conversation about how loud it is. I'm not returning my copies, but I am trying to edit a version from the GH version that sounds good on my headphones.

has anyone gotten theirs yet that ordered it?

I am loving this album, and the sound seems fine to me. I have been listening to the album nonstop at home, work, gym, and in my car. I am completely blown away with the content of the album. If your complaining about the Cd quality, you can't do much about it, what is done is done. Plus, Metallica led reviewers preview the cd prior to the release date, and it did not bother them. Just stop complaining and enjoy this moment, at least Metallica released an album this year. Before Chinese Democracy. Now I am awaiting for Trivium's new album, September 30.

I know most of us believe this CD sounds like a culmination of Metallica's history, so which album does each song fall under? Here is my list with ratings out of 5 stars:

1. That Was Just Your Life - Master/justice

2. The End of The Line - This is a hard one... Ride *

3. Broken, Beat and Scarred - Clearly this song is very ...and Justice like. You could put this song on that album and wouldn't notice the difference in style other than the bass. *

4. The Day That Never Comes - Ride/Justice

5. All Nightmare Long - St. Anger, yes I said it... many of those riffs remind me of St. Anger. *

6. Cyanide - Ride/Master... very Leper Messiah like. *

7. The Unforgiven III - Metallica
*
8. The Judas Kiss - Load Era/lil Kill in there. *1/2

9. Suicide and Redemption - Justice

10. My Apocalypse - Master/ReLoad/Kill
**
Anyways not a whole lot of Kill on there. In a way can be expected. They did a lot of maturing since that record even from Kill to Ride.

Yes..we shouldnt be complaining about such an awesome album .. you know what im wondering, since we have had a while to listen to it now has anyones opinions changed on any songs since it came out? what are some of peoples favorites and why? .. enough with the bashing of a great album..yes its loud, we get it..now shut the fuck up please

Posted by Mark @ 09/22/2008 12:18 AM EST

good post nick..thats what im talking about. This album is definitely a little piece of every album thrown together..and its awesome. Heres what i think..

1. That Was Just Your Life - This song is right off Justice and I love it.

2. The End of The Line - This sounds like a combo of Ride and St Anger (with production) to me

3. Broken, Beat and Scarred - Load era just with speed to it, and a bit of Justice.

4. The Day That Never Comes - I think this actually has Black Album/Justice written all over it

5. All Nightmare Long - I would have to disagree about the St Anger comment..Master/Justice

6. Cyanide - Some Load era riffing, with some early feel to it.

7. The Unforgiven III - Black/Load Era all the way

8. The Judas Kiss - More Justice to my ears here..except the Bow Down part, thats straight from Kill

9. Suicide and Redemption - Load/Reload type feel to it, combined with a little Ride in parts

10. My Apocalypse - This song reminds me of almost every album..Master/ReLoad/Kill/St Anger

Its funny that I have said St Anger in there a few times although it sounds nothing like St Anger..which leads me to believe that St Anger could have been great with just a little more work. Thats my 2 cents, dont tear me apart

Since the album came out I think I've worn myself out on Broken, Beat, and Scarred, TDTNC, and All Nightmare Long, which was my favorite track the first few days.

I've continued to love The End of the Line, The Judas Kiss, and That Was Just Your Life.

Cyanide has worked its way back in (I think it being out there first made me write it off).

I finally can get in to U3 and Suicide and Redemption after many listens. Maybe a little out of place on this album, but not anywhere near their worst work.

My Apocolypse is probably my new favorite Metallica song. I'm not kidding, it's up there with Ride the Lighting and Outlaw Torn in my book. Not only is it brutal, but the lyrics are great. "what makes me know what time to cross over? what to repeat until i feel?"

p.s. i could really care less about the mixing and all that stuff. the band many of us call our favorite has put out an album that silences most, if not all of the haters. its not a perfect world. there's worse things in life that a flubbed cd volume level...but then again i defended load and reload so i'm biased!

The Judas Kiss solo sounds like it was taken right off of ReLoad. Nothing wrong with that tho. Very bluesy at times, but also shreds.

The End Of The Line sounds very Load/reload to me. The music and the vocals, a bit like prince charming, king nothing. It's bluesy in some way, i think with a different drummings paturn, it could have been in one of those two albums!

Posted by Bleeding @ 09/22/2008 08:50 AM EST

My final statement on the production: I like the CD better in my car, like the GHIII version better in my ipod(at max volume).

I can't place each song album by album, but I know I hear some st. anger riffs(or close to it) at various points, I also recognize a couple of things from the SKOM movie that didn't make st. anger. Not really major parts of songs, just different riffs or breakdowns here or there.

A part of one song reminded me a touch of King Nothing.

Overall, the aggresiveness/tone of the record remind me of the Ride to Justice period, but other than the solos I can't pick a song and say it takes me to any specific song of the early records.

I think it was a pretty masterful job of incorporating parts of everything they have been, and to my ears the best combo: heavier on the older style, with bits of the more recent years.

Other than to listen to two slipknot songs one time, nothing else has been in my CD or playing on my ipod since I got it.

And to coffin box, I emailed the club, and they informed(or reminded)me that when I ordered it there was a warning of it likely coming out well after the release date.
