09/03/2008 Entry: "UPDATES MAGNETICA"

Death Magnetic has made its way to the internet download sites, presumably after a French retailer sold copies of the album prematurely. Speculation was rampant that the album release would be pushed up by the band prior to the leak... so will Death Magnetic be released earlier that the September 12th Worldwide release date? We can only hope... as stated before their 9th album on the 9th day of the 9th month has a nice ring to it!

With little more than 24 hours before broadcast, Met.com has finally published the radio stations that will broadcast tomorrow's radio show.

Met Club presales have ended and various radio station presales have started.

I think with only 9 more days to go, it would be more work then it's worth...

Oh, one thing about DM: Who the fuck mastered this? There's no dynamics, constant clipping, it's way too freakin loud.

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 09:15 PM EST

Anyone else think James' voice could be turned up a little?

Posted by Ice Nine @ 09/03/2008 09:21 PM EST

I'm sure the album sounds 100% like they wanted it to sound, whatever you think or wished..

Posted by Bleeding @ 09/03/2008 09:29 PM EST

of course it will be out on the 9th(in the u.s.)...and the 12th world wide. i thought everyone would assume that. this album kicks ass man, in regards to the snare being too loud and no harmonized vocals or what the fuck ever else you think you could have done better at, why do some of you feel the need to complain and suggest what they should have done or not done instead? (i think slipknot's keg was too loud but i didn't hear crying about it)the record is done, shipped, and waiting for us. do yall really think that james and lars will read that shit and fix it for you next time? hell no, they are writing what they want and what they feel, not how we feel and what we want. goddamn, just be happy they unleashed a masterpiece and not st angry 2

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/03/2008 09:33 PM EST

Sorry, I will never make another comment ever again. I mean, this site is just for praising Metallica, after all! You can't actually have any sort of informed discussion.

Also: I could do a better mastering job then this. There may be a bit less chunk or something, but at least there wouldn't be constant clipping and the cymbals would have some sort of transient attack to them.

(still a great album, mind)

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 09:38 PM EST

Yeah, this record is mixed way too loud... it's almost annoying at times. The drums for the most part sound almost muffled... an exception to this is Judas Kiss where the drums sound much better - but overall, the drum sound is terrible. The guitars at times almost sound like processed/digital guitars... there are some nice meaty chunks of James' rhythm guitars at times.

Sure, Rick Rubin needed to produce this album. But, I think they might've needed someone a different to mix or engineer it... there's not enough dynamics in the mix... it's just out there, too loud... cause the audiophiles amongst us to cringe at clipping and distortion.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/03/2008 09:41 PM EST

I will be the firs to admit that I don't know anything about a mix or what is too loud or what have you. Is it possible it will sound better on the studio released cd. I mean is it possible that whatever dude over in france burned this thing and then released it did a shit job of it? I honestly don't know.

Posted by Unnamed Fan @ 09/03/2008 09:45 PM EST

I will say that only a few of the tracks have really jumped out at me. I think this is very much like AJFA in that it took me a few times through to really "get" some of those songs. OBTW, if I remember correctly that one sounded like shit too, and is always placed up there with the first three as "classic". Just a thought.

Posted by Unnamed Fan @ 09/03/2008 09:48 PM EST

It's unlikely it will sound that much better, Unnamed. there's quite a few different version out there, now.

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 09:54 PM EST

20 more minutes to full download!!!! i can't wait!!!!

Posted by xino @ 09/03/2008 09:59 PM EST

I think the album was specifically mastered to sound a lot like Garage Days Re-Revisited. That's the closest thing I can think in regards to this mix. It is really close to redline all the way through. I'm hoping that's less pronounced on the CD, but I think it's something that needs to be anticipated and expected, it's just god-awful loud... perhaps to force you to hear it distorted as if it's being played too loud through your best friend's crappy stereo. Sounds best through headphones, from my experiments so far. I pretty much ruined my hearing at work today in a way that I haven't for years...

Posted by Azrael @ 09/03/2008 10:01 PM EST

aww, wtf! I got banned on the Metbb for making a (clearly obvious) joke that the jews were behind the leak. YOU ARE BREAKING MY BALLS METBB.

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 10:27 PM EST

im interested to see if they're gonna open their shows with a new song. i think "that was just your life" is def a strong enough song to open with. they need to play the hell out of this album on this tour. shove this shit up people's ass live.

Posted by marcus @ 09/03/2008 10:30 PM EST

I'm hoping that they stand behind it and basically just play the whole album.

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 10:35 PM EST

the solo in the suicide and redemption reminds me of the home depot theme song.

Posted by sean @ 09/03/2008 10:47 PM EST

I think the first track was the best, That was Just Your Life... but fuck it's hard to tell.. it's all fucking good!

Posted by Breadfan @ 09/03/2008 10:51 PM EST

wow, it sounds really good, heavy!!! not old but new metallica!

Posted by xino @ 09/03/2008 10:55 PM EST

i finally bend and took it like a man....coffin box! i thought it was sold out (met club) but its still available in mission metallica

Posted by xino @ 09/03/2008 11:20 PM EST

My friend just got the new album. Idk how but I am listening to it right now!!! OMG EVERY TRACK. It's amazing soo far. Broken, Beaten, Scarred is seriously amazing. Very very And justice like. I know Rubin said go back to Master, but I think they were leaning more towards And justice the way the first 3 tracks sound.

Posted by Nick @ 09/03/2008 11:27 PM EST

O yeah that arabic thing Kirk was talking about before.... READ INTO IT. It is everywhere.

Posted by Nick @ 09/03/2008 11:31 PM EST

I just finished listening to the new album.

What has always made me enjoy Metallica more than any other band has been their ability to mix together lots of great music into one song. The changes always felt right and you knew you were listening to Metallica.

You know you're listening to Metallica when you listen to this album.

The songs are complex, and will require repeated listens. But on first listen, they are fucking great. There is not a bad song on this album. Some standouts are
'This Was Just Your Life', 'The Judas Kiss', 'My Apocalypse', and 'Suicide and Redemption'.

I think this album will be a classic, but we won't know that for a few years. One thing is clear, Metallica never left.

Posted by G @ 09/03/2008 11:53 PM EST

The solo in Suicide and Redemption is SICK.

Posted by Nick @ 09/04/2008 12:28 AM EST

kudos G...they never left. is it me, or does it sound like james drinks again...hooray beer...hail satin if you please

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/04/2008 12:31 AM EST

There is something wrong with you if u don't like Unforgiven 3. Yes there is no horn in the beginning which is weird, but the intro is great. It sounds like an old western movie. Like after the final shoot out.. it's like "the aftermath" type feel.

Posted by Nick @ 09/04/2008 12:32 AM EST

I think you chicks should just stick to Audioslave and U2. It's supposed to be loud, it's fucking metal for Christ Sake. You guys bitch about the dumbest things. Have a latte, with your pinky up, and swap recipes with eachother.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/04/2008 12:40 AM EST

I'm tired of trying to explain the difference between something being loud and something being distorted at even low volume levels. I think Rick Rubin purposely pushed it into the range of distortion on purpose... this screws with people who buy great stereo equipment specifically so that they can hear every nuance of a recording... even at insane volume levels. So please stop saying "It's supposed to be loud, it's metal." Yes, it's a great album, but I'd really love to hear it at a normal level without distortion. My comment was an acknowledgement that this may not be possible because of the way it was recorded. Hard to get used to, but nothing like the recording oddities of St. Anger.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/04/2008 12:59 AM EST

I have a feeling the date will be moved up, but I was thinking so when I saw it came out September 12 "Worldwide". I've bought a lot of albums the day they come out, and it's always been a Tuesday, not a Friday.

From what i've noticed, the U.S. is usually a few days ahead of most countries as far as "Worldwide" dates are concerned. I will now go to sleep with my fingers crossed to see some GOOD news in the morning.

Posted by Josh @ 09/04/2008 03:12 AM EST

who-hoo just ordered my floor tickets for Chicago January 27 w/ the livemetallica.com download package for that show and DM cd. Thats just way too far away. You gonna be there Thingy?

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 09/04/2008 03:48 AM EST

I agree with Caspian and JD, the mix is terrible, if it was mixed better, it could still sound nice, but a lot better on your HiFi.

Wow Suicide sounds like old school Satch in places.

at 6.15 is it just wah, or backwards lyrics ?

Posted by andrew @ 09/04/2008 04:17 AM EST

Death Magnetic personal review

4.5 out of 5

- the only reason I don't rate a perfect score is the much ballyhooed loudness of the recording and a couple songs that are perhaps a bit overlong.

My favorites

All Nightmare Long
Broken, Beat, and Scarred
- these 2 are in a class by themselves

The Day That Never Comes
Cyanide
That Was Just Your Life
My Apocalypse
Unforgiven III
The End of the Line

All Nightmare Long is just the best thrash metal song I've heard since AJFA. It's monstrous heavy, it flows, strong chorus, and it has that heavy whirlwind in the back that was lifted from "The New Song" which was the very best part of that song, you could just headbang yourself stupid.

Broken, Beat and Scarred is just catchy and heavy as hell.

Cyanide is a catchy thumper with a fantastic chorusmade for live show singalongs.

TWJYL is a blistering opener that says in no uncertain terms what to expect from that track forward.

Unforgiven III and TDTNC are nice changes of pace. TDTNC just becomes a "One"-ish epic titan and Unforgiven Thrice is just beautiful and foreboding.

End of the Line has that heavy groove, like post-Load with an extra set of balls.

Only disappointments for me are the instrumental and Judas Kiss. I like parts of both but I just feel the instrumental lacks the sonic flow and dynamics you could just feel in their previous instrumentals, they just had an aura, an atmosphere of their own. If there's anywhere this band still feels the loss of Cliff Burton, it shows there. Nobody could or will be able to structure an instrumental like he did. It was structured like a Beethoven symphony on electric guitars.

Judas Kiss... I don't know. It jus doesn't flow for me and the lyrics sound to early 80's British new wave metal for me. Just kinda overwrought. It's the only song where I truly here a collection of disjointed riffs, but that's just me, and maybe it will just take more time to grow on me as Metallica epics sometimes can do.

Overall, a cathartic beast of an album with a visceral power I wasn't sure this band could produce anymore, and I'm so glad they disproved my doubts. This places them firmly on top of the metal heap once again. The elder statesmen of heavy metal have reclaimed their throne and showing the kids how it's done.

- and that's the other thrilling thing about this. Looking in places like Metallica's Myspace page there are so many comments from kids 16-18 years old saying how great the new album is and how hard it rocks. they seem genuinely happy to have a great Metallica album in their generation. I'm 25, and that excites me to see that. You didn't have that kinda buzz with St. Anger. Anger became like a true-diehards-only fetish and I can see why in retrospect, and especially when compared with Death Magnetic. It's just a telling sign that Metallica has once again created music that can unite generations and people of all walks in appreciation of their music.

And that's a big step. Metallica is rising from it's ashes to shake the world once again as only they do. Those of us longtimers and long sufferers can really appreciate what a fantastic time this is and be proud to see new Metallifucks emerging. It's just a wonderful time to be a Metallica fan.

WE DIE HARD!!!

whats the different between death magnetic and other albums by metallica.. i didnt skip any of the songs!

Killemall - Jump in the fire
Ride the lightning - Escape
Master of puppets - the thing that should not be
And justic - Eyes of beholder
The black album - Sad but true
Load - Cure
Reload - where the wild things are
Garage Inc - The more i see
St anger - SKOM, ShootMe

well,. thats just me..

Posted by ZeNo @ 09/04/2008 04:23 AM EST

I'm no producer or anything.... But maybe it sounds differently because these are ripped songs everyone is hearing? I haven't heard them yet because i'm going to try to make it to the date, but i've found music to sound a little different MP3s to a CD?

Either way, it will sound like whatever it was SUPPOSED to sound like.

Posted by Josh @ 09/04/2008 06:00 AM EST

I know I am gonna get called a bad metallica fan but I am so upset with the chorus of "All Nightmare Long." I love the entire song and just don't like when he says "all nightmare long." It's a monster of a song though.

Posted by marcus @ 09/04/2008 07:51 AM EST

every single review says that the album sounds crystal clear, so hopefully its due to the mp3 quality

Posted by xino @ 09/04/2008 08:40 AM EST

I love the album. It is heavier than I thought it would be. My only critisism is that Suicide and Redemption dosn't have enough light and shade. All the other met instrumentals have slow melodic sections but there is only a small bit in Suicide and Redemption. Apart from that it's a kick as album.

Posted by Morr1e @ 09/04/2008 08:45 AM EST

Ok, so there are 2 songs on the album that I am not "into" yet.

Does not mean I don't like them, just havn't found that comfort level.

-That was just your life
-Suicide and Redemption

Knowing my own musical taste and patterns, these songs will probably become my favorites in time. Usually the ones I like the most take the most time.
I can't get BBS out of my head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

will the real slim tony please stand up?

Posted by Tony @ 09/04/2008 10:40 AM EST

I dunno, I just don't seem to hear the distortion that everyone else keeps picking out. The only negative thing I can say about the producing is that James vocals are a little to quiet, seems he voice should of been turned up 2 or 3 more decibels.

Reading everyone elses reviews, seems I'm standing alone thinking that The End Of The Line is one of my fav songs on the album.

The two songs that I'm having trouble getting into are Judas Kiss and Cyanide. With Cyanide I kinda lose interest or get bored with it. Judas I'm not sure why yet, need more listens I think.

Overall... GREAT fucking album!!!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/04/2008 11:34 AM EST

Listened to the album in my car on my POS factory stereo for the first time today. The loud mix makes more sense now, because it pushes my stereo to sound great for this album (although I doubt my speakers will last 2 months the way they are being overdriven.) I think it'll still bother me listening to it on a good stereo, but it's a really great sound in my car, almost like a concert right in front of the speakers.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/04/2008 11:38 AM EST

... oh! and can somebody help me with lyrics???

All Nightmare Long: "We hunt you down on with (?), I hunt you down all nightmare long"

"We hunt you down without mercy"

- just to clarify for those who may have thought

"Hunt you DOWN with my PUSS-EYY"

Lol kidding kidding.

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 09/04/2008 12:42 PM EST

Picked up the TDTNC single last night that also has a live version of No Remorse on it-pretty good. I'm happy listening to that along with Cyanide, My Apocalypse. I think I might get some Chicago tickets. Maybe Moline, but we'll see. I'm debating on the coffin box. I'd like to pick DM on vinyl & will keep it sealed. Any of you going to keep the coffin box sealed or will you open it?

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/04/2008 12:55 PM EST

At first I was thinking that Cyanide was my favorite. Right now I cannot stop listening to Broken, Beat and Scarred. Just makes you want to pound your chest like a gorilla and wreck the room you are listening to in.

"What don't kill ya make ya more strong!!"

Posted by Unnamed Fan @ 09/04/2008 01:12 PM EST

OK, as far as the "loud" goes. I'm not into that super technical shit, but I think I understand the point. My point is, who gives a fuck? Are the songs good? Is the music good? Finally, I am pretty certain the finished sound is EXACTLY as James and Lars wanted.

I've not seen it here, but I've seen in several places where lars' drumming is getting bashed. Do these knuckleheads realize with all the technology he could make it virtually any way he wanted? It's how they WANT it to sound. They don't want to sound like metallica with Lombardo, Hoglan or Jordison. Lars has a distinct style, and that's what they wanted. We'll see if he can pull it off live, but how can you slam the drumming on the record?

The best thing I like about this disc so far is that I haven't just picked one or two songs to listen to repeatedly. I've got no urge to skip past any of them(other than Cyanide cause I listened to it 100 times already). This is taking me a lot of listens to absorb, and I think it is a masterpiece thus far. I have no idea which tracks will hold up as my favorites as time passes. I've been humming various parts to different songs on it since last night, the wife is wondering what the hell is going on with me.

Posted by kurt @ 09/04/2008 01:37 PM EST

After 2 days I finally relented and listened to it all.

What can I say...FUCK YES !!!!

The Metallica I first seen live in 1989 is back. Loving All Nightmare Long, The Judas Kiss and Unforgiven 3. Can't wait to hear these live, especially The Judas Kiss, I can picture 10,000 ppl singing "Judas lives recite this vow I'VE BECOME YOUR NEW GOD NOW !!!" As for sound issues, I'll wait till I get my CD and download before I comment on it, suffice to say it already sounds better than AJFA and St Anger.

Posted by Devilman @ 09/04/2008 01:46 PM EST

The point is this: if the mix is too loud, you miss out on a lot of cool stuff that the band intended you to hear, but some dipshit producer / engineering team decided to make it stand out when it's played on the radio. Loud mixes end up having a lot of fuzz and clippage and little/no dynamics. I'm certain that it was James' intention to have Suicide and Redemption start of really, REALLY quiet and build into a normal volume; whereas, what you hear is an awkward low volume start... Try recording your voice on Sound Recorder, then increase the volume 50%, each time your voice will become distorted and will end up sounding like shit in the end. I think some guy posted a video on Youtube about this at some point.

Posted by die on your feet @ 09/04/2008 02:24 PM EST

Black Album had the best sounding drums of all, I think.

Posted by die on your feet @ 09/04/2008 02:27 PM EST

I can't figure it out, this album sounds great to me, no distortion...

But I'm still leaning toward The End Of The Line being my fav song... that just kicks ass! "the slave becomes the master!"

Still having trouble what everyone sees in Judas Kiss though... just can't get into it... think it's the lyrics and the way he sings it...

I'm hoping My Appocalypse or U3 will be the next single/video...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/04/2008 03:18 PM EST

Broken, Beat & Scarred needs to be the next single! And played at every Metallica concert henceforth! Metallica just invented GTM (Groove-Thrash Metal) with that tune! Part groove metal, part thrash metal!

Posted by D-J @ 09/04/2008 03:39 PM EST

Question, the band gets royalties for songs bought on Itunes, right? I got a Itunes gift card and bought TDTNC and My apocolspse figuring it wouldn't have the clicking(which I can't hear anyways). I'm just curious about how much of the .99 cents per song the band actually gets.

Posted by kurt @ 09/04/2008 03:45 PM EST

I'm with NCNG... The End of the Line is my favorite. The little soft part back into the huge riff/screaming thing is amazing. So unexpected and perfect. I can see why they chose not to call the album "The End of the Line" even though this song occupies the slot traditionally given to the "title track."

Posted by Azrael @ 09/04/2008 04:48 PM EST

I thought AJFA had the best drumming.

Do you guys think someone will record this radio show tonight? I have a feeling I may miss it and I really want to hear it.

All Nightmare Long

Luck. Runs. Out.
Crawl from the wreckage one more time
Horrific memory twists the mind
Dark, rugged, cold and hard to turn
Path of destruction, feel it burn
Still life
Incarnation
Still life
Infamy

Hallucination
Heresy
Still you run, what's to come?
What's today?

'Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck. Runs.

You crawl back in
But your luck runs out

1.2.

Luck. Runs. Out.

The light that is not light is here
To flush you out with your own fear
You hide, you hide, but will be found
Release your crypt without a sound

Still life
Immolation
Still life
Infamy

Hallucination
Heresy
Still you run, what's to come?
What's today?

'Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Luck. Runs.

You crawl back in
But your luck runs out

Then you crawl back in
Into your obsession
Never to return
This is your confession

Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck. Runs.

You crawl back in
But your luck runs out

Your luck runs out

For those of you complaining about how LOUD the album is, you can always blame it on the "loudness war."

If you don't know what that is, here's a video that demonstrates that.

A lot of people in the music industry have already expressed their problem with this trend.

i still have the whole album file , but wont listen to it now , i ordered 2 coffin box . one to open and one kept sealed .

I hope someone records it. Not sure if I'll be able to listen to the broadcast either. I'm guessing it'll end up on youtube eventually. Maybe the boys will announce that the CD release will be pushed forward.

I have heard any of it and do not plan on it until I have the cd in my hands but I remember them saying something about recording this on a new type of cd or something. Perhaps this new type has something that makes it sound crappy when it is burned. I know that The Day That Never Comes was a bit loud when we first heard it and then they released a better version. This is the only song that I have listened to and there is a huge difference between the two. Anyway, just my thoughts on the issue.

ive got the album downloaded but i also bought the available iTunes songs - i have to say the itunes songs sound fine mix wise and what not

i think what has happened is the person that has originally uploaded it did it at 128kb res which was then remixed to 320kb, which makes it louder but also has some kind of eqing on it and makes it crappy sounding.

the itunes versions of the songs are great sounding compared to the leaked version. pro's vs amateur fans

also - this album's mix as shown by the itunes store is a very live feel to it, something they have wanted on an album since ajfa. everything sounds realistic.

Anyone here know flash around here? My skills are lacking in that area. I know longer have the program or the files I used to make the flash here on IS.

This radio show is kinda lame... Missed part of it for a fire run we had.

Thats one thing with leaks and that too, not that I know shit about shit about computers... but what we have all heard I am sure is converted versions and all that so maybe thats where the fuss about mixing quality and production is comming from? I still haven't heard any of the leaks yet though. But from what you all are saying it's sure making it tough for me not to sneak a listen haha!

Dave Grohl was funny towards the end when he finally warmed up. I thought it was funny when he compared the cover of the album to a certain body part that the blabbermouth kids keep on mentioning.

By the way merkin is my new word of the day, thanks to Mr. Grohl.

What a waste of 2 hours listening to that stream. Glad I didn't waste my hard earned money on the new album! Absolutely horrible. Tiny Tim could do a lot better. GOTCHA! Just kidding, folks! Seriously, I'm very, very, very impressed with what I heard on the stream. I'm not going to spoil it for the ones who decided to refrain from listening to the new songs. I'm not listening to any more new ones until next Friday. Bring on the 12th!

By the way, the sound on my TDTNC singles is fine! Not too loud, no clipping or any of that crap people were complaining about!

so yea, the radio brodcast from 97.1 KEGL the Eagle here in Dallas was alright, i was hoping it would be longer and more q&a. i recorded it on my computer from a fm radio to burn for my brother who is working, i would totally put it up on-line somewhere for some of you who missed it but i have no idea of how to go about that at all at all(i don't know how to even post something on youtube)sorry but i am sure that someone will put something up. as for the mightymet releasing a cd of the brodcast, i wouldn't hold my breath. 5 more days till Tues.!.!.!are there any stores that do the midnight release anymore? i usually don't go for that sort of thing but for this i would. not a bestbuy but another place maybe, Walmart?

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/04/2008 11:38 PM EST

I remember going to a Best Buy midnight release for Load. If you get a chance to go to a release party I recommend it. It's always cool to meet other MetallicA fans. Once again, IS-JD, man, thanks for keeping this site alive!

for any of you have to have collectors on here, check out http://used.guitarcenter.com/usedgear/index.cfm. they have pretty cheap KH signature series guitars. guitar center used gear on-line, it's great for finding guitars you wont find everyday at the local store. i recently bought the esp ltd ec1000 deluxe and i was very sceptical of buying on-line w/o playing or seeing it but i had nothing to worry about. plus they have a great return policy. and if you don't play or collect, check it out anyways it is pretty interesting

just realized i didnt hear any song like the "holy revolver" we heard on the MM video??

Posted by DemonGT @ 09/05/2008 03:35 AM EST

Just a random thought...Lars made an interesting comment in an interview he did for Revolver. He spoke about Phil Towle and those ugly years of 2001-3. The quote was "Phil always said that work we were doing on the St.Anger project, the real benefit to that was not going to be on the St.Anger record, it would be on the next record." That got me thinking about Dr. Towle, and how crucial he was to the bands survival. I am trying to be as honest with myself as I can be, but the simplicity of the whole scenario is this. Metallica NEEDED help. And they sought it out via Phil Towle. We lost Jason as a result of it (and numerous other band turmoil issues) and I am still a bit melancholy over that, but at the same time, the guys that have been together since Kill 'em All toughed it out. There is no way they would have done that without "Dr. Phil". And I think that I am fair in saying that James, Lars and Kirk would agree with me on this. So I would just like to give a quick shout out, fuck yeah, and thank you to Dr. Phil Towle for helping the boys clean out there lockers, get there shit together, and squared away. Without Dr. Towle, we would not have a Death Magnetic.

Just to fan the flames of early release speculation.

The major electronic shop near where I work(in Osaka, Japan) makes little print out for new releases
(usually just the name of the bad, title, a picture of the band and the date)
The one for DM lists the 12th.

However, they also have reservation slips where you put down your name and phone number and they hold your copy.
It is dated the 10th.
These are mass produced forms available at all of the chains shops.

I think Japan will be seeing a release on the 10th. Which of course means an American release on the 9th.

Wow all nightmarire long..

an amazing chorus, im loving this album. I love the Piano on U3

Initialy i was crytical of prtoduction then I thought, KILL, RIDE, MOP, and JUSTICE sonically all lack a warm fluffy sound. But they rock.

I think im also getting confused by all the breaks and everything, ie Justice style, but these song rock !!

Noticing all sorts of infludences.

"We did it again" on one song
SAtriani on another.
"Slayer"
etc

I LOVE IT.

Im glad I didnt like
first, thats usually the sign of a
great album.

Every listen it gets better !!

Ole. I agree Phil was good for Metallica, but the real shout should go to his Jumpers ...lol

Has anyone been able to find out the name of the 11th song? It's gonna be released on Guitar Hero and I'm pretty sure it'll be released online if you buy the album and stuff... but nothing yet???

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/05/2008 10:14 AM EST

I think it will be called Shine. I hope thats the song with the "When the sun goes hellbound..." bit in it. Or it might be the holy revolver bit. Who knows, maybe both parts are in the same song. Do you guys have radio stations that are playing new Metallica? I love in South Florida and 93.1 and 103.1 both SUCK. They BARELY if ever play The Day That Never Comes, and they certainly haven't played any of the other songs. I have been hearing some stations are playing My Apocalypse and Cyanide. Does anyone know of any good stations online that ACTUALLY play this stuff? I just think its ridiculous they play all the other stuff they play and DON'T play mind blowing new music from the greatest band in the world.

Posted by D-J @ 09/05/2008 10:30 AM EST

Oooops, meant to say "I live in South Florida"... Another thing, I am guessing we'll hear 6 singles off Death Magnetic because 1. its such a ridiculously awesome album, 2. Metallica said they will be touring for two years to support it, and 3. they released 6 for The Black Album. Therefore, if I had to pick the 6 to be released to radio (not necessarily in this order), I would go with: The Day That Never Comes (already out, of course), 2. Broken, Beat & Scarred, 3. All Nightmare Long, 4. Unforgiven 3, 5. The Judas Kiss, 6. My Apocalypse. Actually, I am not sure what the 6th one will be, but I am PRETTY sure they will release 2 - 5. What do you guys think? Now, I am not picking these because they are my favorites, I just think these will be the ones.

2. How much money does the band see from a 99 cent song download from itunes?

I can't really say I have a favorite yet, but I hover around judas kiss, all nightmare long and my apocolypse the most.

Posted by kurt @ 09/05/2008 11:26 AM EST

1st things 1st Ole remember theoulawfailed I combine Oultaw Torn and The GOd that Failed, remember my name from now on there bud. Moving on after listeneing to the radiocast last night Lars said how they usually don't play to many songs from a new album right away because "we feel shy about playing new ones right away" Lars stated how they plan to hit the ground running with new tracks. So hopefully when I see the Boys in Denver I'll hear at least 4 to 5 new songs. All I have heard from Death is the six songs the band has released. I had to fight the urge to listen to the whole album online. I don't hold it against anyone from listening to it. If anything it will helps sales. I just want to take the rest of the album and digest it all at the same time

Posted by theoutlawthatfailed @ 09/05/2008 11:31 AM EST

I really hope the fellas shake up the set list more, after doing some research on Metontour and live Metallica you see the same songs over and over. We all understand there are songs that they are going to play. But some of the songs that they have pulled out Trapped Under Ice, Dyers Eve, Jump in the Fire, the complete Puppetz album. Killing Time, the Prince, Metal Militia, Holier than thou, Of Wolf and Man, The God that Failed, Ride, They began playing Justice again. Jaymz said how he feels Reload is and underrated album. That being the case I would love to hear Fixxxer Wild things, Carpie Diem from that album I also want to see them closing with different songs every night. So with that said fellas name off 5 songs you wanna see them pull out on this tour

Posted by theoutlawthatfailed @ 09/05/2008 11:49 AM EST

I heard Lars say they wanted to play some new stuff on this album and I hope they do. It would be nice to get at least 3 songs from the 6 I've heard. I guess it would be possible, considering they've already played 2.

On a different note, who's the graphic artist that comments here? I'm working on a new MetallicA logo and man, Photoshop is such a pain. Can anyone recommend another program that you can get easily from Best Buy or something and that's easy to use? Thanks!

D-J,

I believe the Black Album was 5 singles:

Enter Sandman
Unforgiven
NEM
Roam
Sad

If Death has 5, right now I would go with

TDTNC (already one)
Unforgiven III
All Nightmare Long
BBS
Judas Kiss

Although having Suicide as one on the radio would really screw with people, being and instrumental ("where the hell are the words dude,?? Totally trippy man")

Posted by manguy @ 09/05/2008 12:08 PM EST

I would like to hear:

hero of the day
the outlaw torn
some kind of monster
the frayed ends of sanity
free speech for the dumb

Posted by INSERT PEN NAME HERE @ 09/05/2008 12:08 PM EST

My top 5 for DM:

The End Of The Line
All Nightmare Long
My Apocalypse
Unforgiven III
That Was Just Your Life/TDTNC (it's a tie in my mind!)

What I would like to hear live:

Bleeding Me
Dyers Eve
Breadfan
That Was Just Your Life
Shortest Straw

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/05/2008 12:54 PM EST

my 5:

for death magnetic:

judas kiss
bb & s
end of the line
my apocaolypse
all nightmare long

from the rest of the catalogue:

helpless
frayed ends
trapped under ice
2X4
astronomy

sorry outlawthatfailed, I won't forget now. Anyways my five are:

1. All Nightmare Long
2. That Was Just Your Life
3. Escape (I dont give a fuck if Lars doen't like it, it's my fave off of Lightning)
4. My friend of Misery
5. The Thorn Within

Posted by ole @ 09/05/2008 01:27 PM EST

No worries Ole my five are

1 My Friend of Misery
2. Frayed Ends of Sanity
3. To live is to Die
4 Fixxer
5. The Thorn Within

I figured I wouldn't pick any of Death Magnetic since I suspect quite a few of them are gonna be played. I also went with songs that have never been played live because I'm sure there are many people like me who like to hear every met song live at some point whether in person or recorded.

Posted by theoutlawthatfailed @ 09/05/2008 01:43 PM EST

Both Ole and I heard the Outlaw Torn the 2nd time that we saw the boys. It was epic.

Well, as I sit in Myrtle Beach, SC waiting for Hanna to hit under this damn hurricane/tropical storm warning that caused my work to close, I must say I can't be happier with the timing of the Death Magnetic leak! It's one Hell of an album and if this doesn't shut up all the haters, nothing will. The boys are back and I for one couldn't be happier!

Posted by BoNeZ @ 09/05/2008 02:48 PM EST

thanks sean.

Hell, I want to hear all of em live(except maybe suicide). One day it would be cool if they played the three unforgivens in a row, even though I never really cared for the 2nd.

With more listens, I can hear elements from their entire career. I think they did an excellent job of blending their various sounds into the aggresion of the older records. I hope that satisfies the couple of people that said they became met fans with TBA and the loads and didn't want to feel left behind.

Posted by kurt @ 09/05/2008 02:50 PM EST

Live must haves:
BBS, EOTL, JK, U3, MA as a closer. Don't know why Nightmare isn't clicking for me. I don't like the chorus much, I guess, but the rest is great.
TDTNC is actually an amazing live song from what I've seen online. Alternate it with One? HUGE chug at the end.
From the catalog, Damage should be on every setlist. Dyers if they can make sure they know it before they play it. Helpless and The Prince are my two favorite covers, but they rarely play either. I miss Last Caress. -Human needs to be played A LOT, and Clover or Disappear are both really good live.
I really want to hear Shine now, just to see how it compares.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/05/2008 03:21 PM EST

D-J, why don't you listen to 94.9 ZETA in south florida? they ALWAYS play Metallica when i visit family there during x-mas. The setlist would make me happy if they played something other than Seek as the encore. Let's go back to the day when in Chicago, January 5th, 2000, they ended with TUI!!

Hey general, cheers for that torrent.

I Found this lyrics for That Was Just Your Life:

1. That Was Just Your Life

Like a siren in my head that always plays just to repeat,
Like a blind man that was shoved into the speeding driver's seat,
Like a face that learned to speak(?) when all it knew was how to fight,
Like a misery that keeps me from (...???),
Like an (...?) that I'm about to waken from its state(?).

My conviction,
A premonition,
Now are the (???) who I deny,
I deny.

I blind my eyes and try to force it all into place,
I stitch them up, see not my fall from grace.
I blind my eyes, I hardly feel it passing me by,
I open just in time to say goodbye.

Almost like your life,
Almost like your endless fight,
Cursed, the day is long(?),
Realize you don't belong,
Disconnect somehow,
Never stop complaining(?) now,
Almost like your fight,
And there it went,
Almost like your life.

Like a bullet, keeps on bleeding to remind me not to think,
Like a raging river, drowning when I only need a drink,
Like a poison that I swallow, but I want the world to die.

Like a release from a prison that I didn't know I was in,
Like a fight(?) (???),
Like a general without a mission until the wars start again,
Start again.

I blind my eyes and try and force it all into place,
I stitch them up, see not my fall from grace.
I blind my eyes, I hardly feel it passing me by,
I open just in time to say goodbye.

Almost like your life,
Almost like your endless fight,
Cursed, the day is long(?),
Realize you don't belong,
Disconnect somehow,
Never stop complaining(?) now,
Almost like your fight,
And there it went,
Almost like your life.

(Solo)

Like a touch from hell, I feel how hot that it can get if you get caught,
Like a strike from heaven that turns that key,
That brings you straight down to your knees,
Like a touch from hell, I feel how hot that it can get if I get caught,
Like a strike from heaven to reprieve,
That brings you straight down to your knees.

(Dual guitar solo)

Almost like your life,
Almost like your endless fight,
Cursed, the day is long(?),
Realize you don't belong,
Disconnect somehow,
Never stop complaining(?) now,
Almost like your fight,
And there it went,
Almost like your life.
That was just your life.

A Lot of empty spaces...help!!

Death Magnetic is a fucking AMAZING album. Anyone that doesnt think this resembles there old albums is DEF and clearly hasnt listened to any old Metallica in a while. My local radio station played Disposable Heroes last night and i was shocked when comparing it to the song writing and riffs , even james' vocal style, were all very similar. If you had today james singing on Master of Puppets it would be Death Magnetic. End of story.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 09/05/2008 06:04 PM EST

wow! that was the hell of an album!!!
well i don't really like cyanide,U3 and maybe S&R at least not as much as the others...

Posted by hardivic @ 09/05/2008 06:06 PM EST

Sorry, i didnt me to make it sound like Death Magnetic is the next Master of Puppets, cause its not, its someone all on its own which is what i love about every metallica album. But you can really hear the influence of MOP. and everything else for that matter. Entire career on one album.

I think Metallica may have re invented the wheel. Slapping metal bands in the face... THIS is how metal should sound.

manguy, I thought the exact same thing, only problem is Metallica is EXTREMELY anti-political, so I doubt they would want to be associated with either side. Definitely appropriate considering what that guy went through, though. Like him or not, democrat or republican, that guy is a hero. That dude was held captive and tortured, at one point had the option of being let go when it was discovered he was an admiral's son, and he chose to stay to honor the first caught-first release policy, then got tortured some more. I can't even imagine what it must be like to be held against your will for 5 solid years by people who REALLY don't like you very much in a foreign country being tortured, dreaming of home... We're a bunch of lucky motherfuckers.

suicide and redemption is a great instrumental..it has by far the best kirk solo in the album, my fav as of now is the judas kiss....what a great riff and chorus

Posted by xino @ 09/06/2008 03:43 PM EST

"New Consequence Machine" No idea wtf that means, but damn that whole section of the song from the prechorus to the return to the riff is amazing. Then Kirk's solo with the insane "ooops, here's an accidental noise" start.... mmmmm, that's soooo tasty. The end with the "slave becomes the master..." it's been mentioned before, but they remembered how to make slow have an underlying urgency that makes it clear the song is about to go insane again.
Had it for a week now, and I'm confident in saying that this ranks with the first 4 albums. It may even be better than AJFA or RTL, IMHO. This seems like a shoe-in for Metal grammy, I wonder if it will get Rick any other awards. He deserves all the credit for the direction of this album and the consistency. The boys wrote the songs and performed them which is the majority of the creative process, but it's very important to have someone go "Yeah, that's a turd" when you bring a turd to the table. Lars and James trust each other too much to do a good job of this ("He wrote the song that sold 15 million records, he must know what he's talking about") and Bob Rock was never a good arbiter of what sounds good in metal, so he couldn't have helped them make this...
I'm really just babbling at this point. Seems that everyone completely wore themselves out and is just sitting back and enjoying this great album. Time for me to stop typing and just listen some more. Thanks everyone here for helping to keep an optimistic view while we waited for this...

Hey Seth, a fellow northerner I see, what are the odds you think Metallica would hit up Anchorage or Fairbanks?

Tony, that shit is weaksauce.

I bought St Anger before it was released due to a small independent record store just selling it when it came in. That same store told me they would have it today. Instead I found out today they are not getting it until Thursday. Anyone else call around to see if people will get it or sell it early? I heard Best Buy and Walmart have it already but they wont budge.

Suicide & Redemption Lyrics

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/08/2008 03:58 PM EST

The Unforgiven 3 Lyrics

How could he know this new dawn's light
Would change his life forever?
Set sail to sea, but pulled off course
By the light of golden treasure
Was he the one causing pain?
With his careless dreaming?
Been afraid, Always afraid
Of the things he's feeling
He could just be gone...

He would just sail on
(You'll just sail on)...

How can I be lost?
If I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost?
In remembrance, I relive
And how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?

These days drift on inside of fog
It's thick and suffocating
This seeking life
Outside it's hell
Inside intoxicating
He's run aground
Like his life
Water much too shallow
Slipping fast...
Down with the ship
Fading in the shadows
Now a castaway...

They've all gone away
(They've gone away)...

How can I be lost?
If I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost?
In remembrance, I relive
And how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?

Forgive me, forgive me not
Forgive me, forgive me not
Forgive me, forgive me not
Forgive me...
Forgive me, why can't I forgive me?

Set sail to sea but pulled off course
By the light of golden treasure
How could he know this new dawn's light
Would change his life forever

How can I be lost?
If I've got nowhere to go?
Search for seas of gold
How come it's got so cold?
How can I be lost?
In remembrance, I relive
And how can I blame you
When it's me I can't forgive?

From Metallica.com:
"Death Magnetic," the entire album, available for Guitar Hero too! Update: Exclusive content and how to get the game

We told you it was coming and the time is here . . . the simultaneous release of the album and as what our friends at Activision call "downloadable content" for your Guitar Hero game. Anytime after 2:00 AM PDT on Friday, September 12, you can get "Death Magnetic" for GHIII at the Xbox LIVE Marketplace for a cost of 1,440 Microsoft Points and in the Playstation store for PS3 at a cost of $17.99.

Each version includes exclusive extended solos by James and Kirk on the song "Suicide & Redemption" and will be forward compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour when it comes out in October.

There's the where, when, and how stuff!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a first in both music and gaming . . . the same day that "Death Magnetic" hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for "Guitar Hero III!" We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release . . . who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out.

And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next Guitar Hero, "World Tour," we're ready for that too . . . you will be able to experience "Death Magnetic" for drums, vocals, and guitar when that game emerges this Fall.

Keep watching here for the where, when, and how stuff . . .

today was my first day at best buy in the merchandising dept and i looked it up and sure enough friday until further notice, but there was a huge truck coming in tonight we will unload in the morning, manager said unless it comes in tonight with the go ahead it will arrive friday and be held until tues.

Hey Yukoner, I thought you might be up here nearby. I was hoping they'd come up after this release but so far, no good. I saw them the last time they were in Anchorage, which happened to be their very last show before the S&M stuff. Little did I know that Newsted wouldn't be around much longer. They were pretty tight that night, opening with Breadfan, nailing Roam, closed with Battery (I think). But, the Sullivan Arena is made for sporting events and sux ass for acoustics. It makes St. Anger sound like TBA. Anyway, I've rambled long enough. If they do add Alaska, we'll have to keep in touch and meet up at the show. Later!

Just read the downloads from Mission: Metallica are at midnight PACIFIC time. That's 3 AM my time... don't they realize some folks have jobs? Now, granted... I don't work everyday (average is two days a week), but I do work a 24 hour shift... and I am working Friday... so I might not get the physical CD until Saturday.

Bastards.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/08/2008 07:17 PM EST

24 hours 2 days a week...i hate you JD, lol. That would be sweet man

Posted by Mark @ 09/08/2008 07:55 PM EST

Anybody watching Monday Night Football? They are playing Fuel and Better Than You before they cut to commercials.

Posted by EET FUK @ 09/08/2008 08:16 PM EST

Thanks for the lyrics to S&R, JD. I've been having a really hard time making those out.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/08/2008 08:27 PM EST

Speaking of football, I can just see BBS being used frequently at sporting events like football and hockey that result in devastating hits. Leading to SCARS!!!
hehe

Go Steelers!

Posted by manguy @ 09/08/2008 09:26 PM EST

Do you guys think the demos and dvd will be online to download? If so where? What about older demos?

Posted by metal in ar @ 09/08/2008 09:38 PM EST

Does anyone else here think that the begining of James's solo in Unforgiven 3 kind of sounds like the his live version of the Nothing Else Matters solo?

Posted by Robert @ 09/08/2008 09:41 PM EST

Doesn't get any better than a Packers win with some Metallica music thrown in!!!! GO PACK GO!

Posted by Nick @ 09/08/2008 10:26 PM EST

It was loud at the bar, but was TDTNC in there too? Could have sworn I heard it.

Posted by SRW @ 09/08/2008 10:28 PM EST

Yeah they played TDNC a bunch in the beginning.

Posted by Nick @ 09/08/2008 10:46 PM EST

Mark, it ain't always as easy as it sounds. You can barely see me in this this picture.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/08/2008 11:21 PM EST

I wonder if this will be the last Metallica album to be released in cd format. I like having a physical copy but I don't see it happening again, especially if Metallica doesn't release an album for another 5 years. By then, more and more people will be used to downloading albums online and the storage limitations of cds are looking weaker and weaker. 1 song of Death Magnet has already been sacrificed. I'm just curious if this will be the last store bought copy of a Metallica album you can obtain.

Posted by SRW @ 09/08/2008 11:41 PM EST

Much respect JD, I had no idea man. My job seems very insignificant when you see something like that

Posted by Mark @ 09/08/2008 11:47 PM EST

Watching the Denver vs. Oakland game and I think I heard some Better Than You being played about 1/2 an hour ago to go to commercial.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/08/2008 11:51 PM EST

Monday night football... Metallica, some Broncos layin' the beat down on Oakland! Fuckin' A right son! "Hunt you down all nightmare long!" Jamarcus!

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/08/2008 11:56 PM EST

At the end of the Packers game in the credits it said: music by Metallica. Kind of cool

Posted by Mark @ 09/09/2008 11:13 AM EST

hey does anyone know if they are going to release DM for Rock Band as well?

Posted by die on your feet @ 09/09/2008 11:15 AM EST

Finally got TDTNC as a ringtone from Verizon. It has the bridge before "Love is a 4-letter word." Listening to BBS now. I guess since the album leaked and we can listen to it on youtube whenever we want, there wasn't a new song preview for yesterday. Oh well, I'll listen to it all on Friday. I've been listening to TDTNC and BBS mainly. I've heard All Nightmare Long & The Judas Kiss only a couple of times on purpose to save the CD experience for Friday.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/09/2008 12:54 PM EST

Hey guys, is there any way to find out how many live shows the band has played in their carreer? thanks!

Posted by toolish @ 09/09/2008 02:31 PM EST

toolish, metlists has a pretty up to date tally on gigs, setlists, etc.

Posted by kurt @ 09/09/2008 03:46 PM EST

GO COWBOYS...FUCK THE EAGLES UP...

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/09/2008 05:16 PM EST

I'm sure James envisioned a different turn-out for the Raiders game when the deal for the Monday Night Football music was done-lol!
