08/31/2008 Entry: "UPDATE MAGNETICA"

Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters will host a special radio program from HQ on September 4th, starting at 6 PM PDT. Check your local stations to see if they are carrying this... this sounds like it's going to be a Death Magentic preview... but, we're hoping for a lot of fun like the 'Don't Call Us..." radio special back in 1997 promoting ReLoad.

Ticket presales for MetClub members started Saturday August 30th, through Ticketmaster.

Best Buy has some Death Magnetic offers in this weekend's sales paper circulars... inlcuding a download of 11 songs from Guitar Hero. That's one more song than what's on the album, folks!

The press movement is starting to hit hard for Death Magnetic - interviews and reviews galor, please check our comments area for folks posting links to those reviews. One of the more fascinating bits was Rob Trujillo revealing that when the band widdled the tracks from 14 to 10, James was quite adamant about The Unforgiven 3 remaining - he also stated Suicide & Redemption was another James project - where James played the solos.

Fucking awesome!!!!!!

one more song on Guitar Hero????? Are you serious??? I KNEW that song was gonna come out somewhere. Bet that's what's on the flash drive too. This is GREAT news :)

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 08/31/2008 02:46 PM EST

I have a feeling that Unforgiven 3 is gonna be amazing...

When I first heard the title, I was worried that they were milking it. But, after reading that Rob interview that mentioned James' passion for it... I'm very impatiently awaiting it.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/31/2008 03:31 PM EST

You bastard JD! I searched for that youtube clip, found it, and you posted it! I know I'm sounding like total fanboy (I don't give a shit) this is going to be one of their best albums... For anyone who really hated the load era thru st. anger, I'm glad they did that. Look at how fuckin' excited we all are for this. Who gets psyched for a new slayer disc anymore? I do like sayler, but the last thing remotely interesting they did was diabolus. I went cosmic bowling last night, and comandeered the jukebox. I played the new songs back to back to back to back. I can't fucking wait... I'm going to go get some chinese take out from Craigslist!

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 08/31/2008 04:36 PM EST

My only worry about this disk rally was James' voice, but that worry has been put to rest, he's sounds in fine form in what I have heard so far. To see these guys in Edmonton is going to cost me well over a grand, but well worth it if you ask me!

Posted by Yukoner @ 08/31/2008 05:52 PM EST

Helllyyyyyeaaahhh!!!

I have a feeling Cyanide will be the new stream this morning at 12am, or whatever time it's supposed to be up on Monday.

Posted by Dave @ 08/31/2008 08:12 PM EST

I just bought floor tickets for both VANCOUVER AND SEATTLE!!!!

2 Metallica shows in 24 hours....i just splugged all over the keyboard.

Cant wait for Death Magnetic, and now im finding out theres an 11th TRACK, youve gotta be kidding me.

Im gonna go get drunk right now because of this, ok i was going to anyways, but this is still great news.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 08/31/2008 09:32 PM EST

Jesus christ, I go on vaca for a week and hear My Apocolypse on sirius radio. Are you kidding me? Now are the bashers and complainers quited down yet? I missed the metclub presale for the boston show. I'm gonna go check now and see if any more seats are available.

Posted by kurt @ 08/31/2008 11:00 PM EST

Dammit, my ticketmaster password is at work. I can't get them till tuesday. Well, they won't be on sale to the public yet, so there should still be some good seats.

Posted by kurt @ 08/31/2008 11:10 PM EST

JD what rob interview is that?

Posted by sean @ 08/31/2008 11:50 PM EST

A little off subject about the new album, but check this out. It made the hairs on my arms stand. Pretty amazing cover of Nothing Else Matters.

This is on about Dave Grohl and Metallica ??

The middle paragraph is Curious, is there something we dont know. ??

"The duo will join the members of Metallica on Thursday - on the eve of the big release - to chat about their friendships with the group and preview the new music."

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/wenn/20080901/ten-foo-fighters-help-metallica-launch-n-c60bd6d.html

Last night also on BBC

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00db3fc/

(no new music, but general interview stuff we have all heard before, ie history and st anger bits. A bit of a promo for St anger without actually playing anything new, just hyping up how amazing metallica are ?)

Sky TV on their listings said a program about Metallica on the Eve of the release.

I kid you not.

Is the album out this week, are they doing a sneaky album release, like St Anger ? or is it the Media hyping it up, or talking about a band they dont know the details about ?

Discuss ??

What time is the new Monday song supposed to be released?? Come on already!

Posted by die on your feet @ 09/01/2008 10:25 AM EST

On metallica.com :

"Keep coming back Monday nights before September 12 for a full taste!"

So i'll guess we'll have to wait a little more...

Posted by Bleeding @ 09/01/2008 03:15 PM EST

Hey dudes...just to let everyone know, go to metallica.com and click on the album links. The writing credits are up under the [read lyrics] link.

Posted by MetOne @ 09/01/2008 04:06 PM EST

holy crap this wait has been killing me for a possible new song release!!!!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/01/2008 05:58 PM EST

Has to be the first time I've ever seen writing credits for a Metallica album, where every single band member is credited on every single track. I think this hails a new era of unity within Metallica that we've never seen before.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 09/01/2008 06:12 PM EST

I may be wrong, but the writing credits for St.Anger were

all songs written by Metallica

Posted by Devilman @ 09/01/2008 06:24 PM EST

That may be true, but Bob Rock does not count as a member of Metallica

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 09/01/2008 06:58 PM EST

And for the first time Metallica or "Hetfield & ULrich" doesn't apear in the section "Produced by".

Posted by Bleeding @ 09/01/2008 07:11 PM EST

for St Anger, its on the same site as "(Hetfield / Ulrich / Hammett / Rock)" for all songs.

It did say "Produced by: Bob Rock and Metallica", while Death Magnetic says just "Produced by: Rick Rubin".

I was thinking it might show as "Produced by: Rick Rubin with Hetfield and Ulrich."... but probably its stipulated somewhere in the contract that Rubin gets full credit on his albums...

Posted by Nonick @ 09/01/2008 07:12 PM EST

Bleeding was thinking the same as me and beat my post by a minute.

Great minds think alike.

Anyway for tonight I am expecting Cyanide and hoping for any other song. Perhaps Judas Kiss due to the clips...

Posted by Nonick @ 09/01/2008 07:14 PM EST

apparently we will also be getting the video for the day that never comes on metallica.com at midnight pacific time

seems like a lot all at once but one of metclub board mods posted the info.

Creepy?...now don't be jealous Sean, I'm just going for the ultimate METALLICA fan of the year! That's right, yours truly is METALLICA fanboy for life!!!!

Got a problem with that or what???

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 09/01/2008 10:17 PM EST

That clip of Broken, Beat and Scarred is wicked. That song is blowing my mind already. So I was wondering something the other day... All those Metallica haters that are out there... Its a pretty safe assumption at this point to say Death Magnetic has in fact returned Metallica to the vibe established in its first four albums. So my question to you guys is this: What do you think the haters are going to do when they hear this album and realize just how awesome it is? Do you think a. they will admit they were wrong all along, that Metallica has always been able to make this music and simply had chosen not to until now, b. not be man enough to admit they were wrong, and basically, just kee their mouths shut, all the while rocking out to DM, or c. find something else to bitch about anyway?

Posted by D-J @ 09/01/2008 10:20 PM EST

Creepy?...now don't be jealous Sean. I don't think I need to calm down, it's fuckin' METALLICA!!!! I'm just going for the ultimate METALLICA fan of the year! That's right, yours truly is METALLICA fanboy for life! Always have been and I always will be, until the day I die.

Got a problem with that or what???

Hate to tell ya but the new song may not come out till Sept 2nd (maybe midnight).

The itunes Countdown to Death Magnetic Page (where My Apocalypse and TDTNC is) says to come back September 2nd to download the a new track. Just a few more hours :-(

Posted by Hextall Hates Chelios @ 09/01/2008 10:30 PM EST

there will always be haters .. metallica is too huge to avoid it.

in fact as long as the haters are hating, metallica is still relevant. once it stops ... well I'd rather not think about that.

Haters keep hating!

Posted by deeskrad @ 09/01/2008 10:33 PM EST

i am expecting the song to hit around 3 am eastern time ... so yeah technically that's tuedsay

Posted by deeskrad @ 09/01/2008 10:36 PM EST

Some people have pointed out that if a song like Fight Fire With Fire were released today, would people bash that? I'm sure they would but I'm not convinced it would be just because they are a Metallica hater. There are many different expectations people have for an album that is written by a band that people have come to love at very different points in Metallica's history. For fans that want a return of the Metallica of 20 to near 30 years ago, I'm sure nothing will satisfy some of them. That's a long time ago and people have different tastes and are different people than they were 25 years ago. It's impossible to recapture that. Others will have different reasons for disliking their new album. I really like what I've heard so far and if someone doesn't like it, you're not going to change their minds, I'm just happy I have a new cd to listen to because there hasn't been a lot of music I've gotten into for a couple of years now.

Posted by SRW @ 09/01/2008 10:51 PM EST

Im betting the song comes out in an hour and half, streaming on metallica.com and probably an mp3 on missionmetallica.

iTunes maybe just always adds songs at the end/beginning of the day.

Posted by Nonick @ 09/01/2008 10:59 PM EST

Most haters are just jealous of Metallica's repeated success and they hate the fact that Metallica was able to cross over to main stream radio (and doing a fine good job at it too) and with that they were able to broaden their horizons and make a shit load more money....staying confined in a little METAL box is no way Metallica wanted to spend the rest of their lives...just imagine how boring that would of been...just ask Slayer. So yeah, most Metallica haters will always hate them for that...Metallica was able to break out of their little METAL box. Hence, METALLICA will always be UNFORGIVEN...according to most of the haters...no matter how good their new shit will be, it won't matter to them much. Most of the haters have their already have their minds made up about Metallica.

I personally love all of Metallica's musical and artistic creations, whether it be metal, rock, alternative, country or whatever, it's all music and I'll find greatness in it all!

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 09/01/2008 11:04 PM EST

so One Minute ... how do you feel about the song We Did It Again?

Posted by deeskrad @ 09/01/2008 11:06 PM EST

I have just been reminded of how pathetic top 40, commercial radio stations are. They just did the old thing where they played the new AC/DC track "Rock n Roll Train" and then played "The Day That Never Comes" and wanted their listeners to phone up and vote for which one they liked best. They played the entire AC/DC song, but only played 3 mins of TDTNC - minus the first part of the intro and faded it out at the end of the second chorus. I knew they wouldn't play the entire 8 mins, but COME ON!!!! How can people who have not yet heard the song get the feel for it in a select 3 mins? I couldn't be bothered sticking with the station to hear the result.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 09/01/2008 11:12 PM EST

That song's not on any my METALLICA albums. I don't have that album...nice try.

I love all Metallica's song with one exception...The Mighty Het sounded cool...just about the only redeeming quality of the whole song...that was some fucked up shit, made me laugh my ass off, though!

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 09/01/2008 11:30 PM EST

Every one has low points in your life, it's how you bounce back is what counts. That song was utter garbage...bitch slap every last one of them for torturing my ears like that.

I'm just another insane motherfucker who happens to think he's Metallica's #1 fan, that's all...peace bros.

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 09/01/2008 11:58 PM EST

It's important to remember that there are mental patients on both sides of the Metallica argument. On one side you have guys declaring Death Magnetic the greatest album of all time without ever hearing it, and on the other side you have the haters who just know the album is going to suck and blah blah blah. You actually even have a 3rd group who is obsessed with what other people think about the album... I'd keep going with this post, but apparently my padded room is ready, and the nice men are coming to take me away.

Well, you should've waited a bit longer, NCNG - Cyanide is up.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 09/02/2008 12:34 AM EST

MAN!! oh MAN!!! the difference in sound quality from the stream to the Download on M:M is night and day. This song sounds so wicked, james' voice is sounding better and better, so excited right now. Also glad its one we've already heard, gotta keep some of the surprise for the 12th.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 09/02/2008 12:56 AM EST

I know I said I was thinking of not listening to any new songs, but after reading it was Cyanide, I went ahead and listened to it...reason being, we've already heard it live and I wanted to hear the difference. It sounds like James has some grunt in this one and it sounds pretty cool. Also, the lyrics are a little different.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/02/2008 01:13 AM EST

This Album Will Rule!

No question, unless you're fuckin' deaf.

Call me crazy...DEATH MAGNETIC will be a masterpiece, what more can I say without actually hearing the record in it's entirety...Cyanide, My Apocalypse and The Day That Never Comes are all great and strong songs so far. I can't find fault in any of them...magnificent music is all I'm hearing. What did I expect, it's fuckin' METALLICA!!!!

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 09/02/2008 01:16 AM EST

Four words. Thanks again, Rick Rubin.

Posted by ole @ 09/02/2008 01:16 AM EST

the studio version is much better than the live one we have heard. James's voice sound a lot grittier, and the guitar is much more clear, I guess that is usually the case when listening a studio recording over a live one. Especially only on it's debut. I don't care if this silences the critics, I already know I am gonna dig this album. Metallica has done an awesome job!

Posted by Yukoner @ 09/02/2008 01:17 AM EST

I can't pick a favorite. All three songs have been beyond my extremely inflated expectations.

Posted by ole @ 09/02/2008 01:19 AM EST

check it, i was at ozzfest and was totally impressed, this blows me away...i haven't been replaying the songs but i think there are maybe a couple of extra solos/riffs on this, the cd version...but totally awesome, all of it so far!!!

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/02/2008 01:25 AM EST

I think that Cyanide is "Hallenback" or however it's spelled... the song that we saw Lars and Rick discussion regarding "I'd like to hear what it sounds like at one tempo." I've been of that opinion since hearing it live, but wasn't really convinced until I heard the studio version. These are the sorts of things that will be interesting to finally have revealed as time goes on... oh, yeah, still a great song even a little different from live.

Posted by andrew @ 09/02/2008 03:59 AM EST

is it just me, or do people think that the solo on cyanide 4:30 - 5:30 sounds very amatuerish and Jam like, and not very well thought out.
?

Posted by andrew @ 09/02/2008 05:16 AM EST

I don't like TDTNC video, IMHO, video content doesn't suit lyrics at all.
+ It's OK to watch it once or twice or maybe three times, but watch that boring actors play more, i will find quite difficult.

P.S. I still love the song.

Posted by $trangeR @ 09/02/2008 06:13 AM EST

love the day that never comes.. but prefer "one" video than this.. they should ask the i disappear director to do the video.
cyanide rocks by the way.. its unique in its own way.. an inovation

Posted by daywillcome @ 09/02/2008 07:01 AM EST

video is incredible..now i like the part that says Love is a four letter word,,,, i understand it now... being in the war like that, love probably does just become a four letter word...because u're forced to be cold out there... well.. it all makes sense.. and fuckin A for Metallica!

About Haters...

Haters are peoples that are missing something in their life. They can't hate Metallica as much as they say they do. Secretly they love them or are only jalous. I mean, i really don't like pickles. I dont feel the need to go on pickles web disscusion boards to say to everyone that i don't like pickles, that they're not as tasty as they were, even bio ones... i just don't eat them, end of the line.

Posted by Bleeding @ 09/02/2008 12:17 PM EST

Some of my favorite quotes from reading haters online:

"they are trying to sounds too much like themselves"

and

"they are just copying themselves"

how can you possibly even reason with people that can say the dumbest things humanly possible...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/02/2008 12:29 PM EST

It's been a very long weekend folks... I'll try to dig up that interview.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/02/2008 01:12 PM EST

Quote:
James is very passionate about it. We had 14 songs recorded and we needed to reduce that number to 10 and although all of them were great, James said to include this one by imperative. He really loves that song. Unforgiven III is like a breath of fresh air since most of the songs are really intense. It's more straigh ahead with a lot of room for dynamics. We all like the song but for James this is a very special one. He feels very close to it and it's a very important song in the new album

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/02/2008 01:15 PM EST

Quote:
James wrote the guitar arrangements in this song and he played the solos on it. It's like his baby and I didn't want to mess with it. I didn't feel good if I would have asked him to include more things on it. It would be like stepping into his territory. I don't know what they think, but I personally think, in my own oppinion, that my role in this album is a bass player that plays very hard, like hitting a punching bag, to supply the necessary warmth under the guitars. That is how I feel about my work in the album. You have to find your own place in the sound to find the correct balance and that's one of the most important things in Death Magnetic.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/02/2008 01:34 PM EST

Yeah, I'd say the extended version of the Unforgiven could be a "short film." I remember when they we're releasing Reload and talking about Unforgiven 2 and I saw the extended version of the 1st Unforgiven. I wanted them to play it more. I'm glad they put it on the videos DVD. I'm guessing they'd eventually release Unforgiven III as a single and have a video. If so, I wonder if they'll use Matt Mahurin to direct, since he worked on the others. 10 days, friends!

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/02/2008 01:43 PM EST

Video for TDTNC is awesome, it totally fits what James mentioned about forgiveness, no complains at all. Far better than any video from the St Anger era, an d for that matter better than any video from the last 12 years…peace!

Posted by EPDA @ 09/02/2008 02:24 PM EST

EPDA, I can't say that I agree.. the video seems to be not related to the song as I hear it at all.

I understand that James likes people to interpret his lyrics in different ways... but, this just doesn't seem to fit at all.

The band performance in the clip looks amazing. The "war" footage looks pretty forced...

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/02/2008 02:40 PM EST

The video is "okay". But why oh why do they keep filming James singing without a microphone!!! He always looks so awkward when he has to sing to the camera.

The thing with the Haters, is that they are hypocrites.

The claim we are sheep and that we will automatically like anything the boys put out without criticism.

However, they will automatically HATE everything they put out with out giving it a chance.

Also, anyone read the post on blabbermouth that a french record store has already put out Death Magnetic??

Wonder if they few who bought it will start uploading the songs to the internet.

Posted by manguy @ 09/02/2008 04:10 PM EST

The low E chug in the verses of Cyanide sound hella good--much better than on the live versions.

Posted by EET FUK @ 09/02/2008 05:11 PM EST

Well I guess one reasons that I really like this video is that I see the point of forgiveness in the soldiers eye and attitude, But like you said IS-JD, maybe is just my interpretation influenced by Hetfield words and it had nothing to do with the actual lyrics...At this point all I can say is that I really dig the song and the video...Any bets on the next video? Unforgiven III? Cyanide? My Apocalypse?

I don't mind the video. Not at all what I expected and not what I (and a lot of other people) had related the lyrics to, but the whole "domestic violence" thing was only our interpretation of the lyrics. Only Het really knows what he wrote that song about. Cyanide is good, much better than the live version (which was still good), but not my favourite of the three songs we've heard so far.

NCNG - thanks for that post!!! I read it and pissed myself laughing at the stupidity of some people. How can you criticise a band for sounding like themselves? Whereas before, they were criticising Metallica for NOT sounding like themselves anymore. Dumb fucks.

So uuhhhmmm, how do you guys feel about downloading a leaked copy of the album? It's out there, so google it if you'd like. Considering I already paid for the coffin box set, and will also be getting the Best Buy offer for the GHIII tracks, I think I'm completely okay with an early gift. On that note, how the band is going to react to the leak is going to make or break their image once again.

It was always going to happen, and when it does come out, people are going to burn it or download it anyway. I am going to buy it because if we don't support the music industry, then bands will not be able to make music. I know first hand how hard it is to sell music thses days, as an amateur recording artist myself. People expect it for free and if they can't download it for free, then they just find someone who has a copy and burn it. What they don't realise is that people like me spend thousands of dollars of our own money to try and make and record the best music we can, but we can't afford to do it if there is no return on our investment. If that trend continues, the music industry will die. Obviously, Metallica will never want for another dollar in their life, but I appreciate the stand that they took against music downloading and I'm glad they stuck up for the little guys like me and have tried to do something to support the music industry as a whole.

I'm still buying it, but I intend on finding some rapidshare action as quickly as possible.

Posted by Joe Cool @ 09/02/2008 09:05 PM EST

Rapidshare action is found!!

Thus far:

1st song is incredibly awesome.
2nd is a bit overlong, not all that memorable, still pretty cool.
3rd is pretty groovy/nu metal-ish (albeit quite heavy) but catchier then AIDS.

Posted by caspian @ 09/02/2008 09:09 PM EST

I am done listening to it and am almost speechless. Metallica has been my favorite band since 1986. I absolutely love this album. My favorites that was just your life, judas kiss, Broken and my favorite is Nightmare. Just great playing all the way through, great dynamics.

I wonder if the album will be moved forward now since it's leaked. Man, this sucks, because I want to listen to it, but I also want to wait for the CD to hit the stores. I'll admit that I did listen to about 5 seconds of Unforgiven III, All Nightmare Long & Broken, Beat & Scarred to see if they were fake on youtube. It's definitely them! I'm trying to resist temptation.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/02/2008 09:18 PM EST

Thingy... I have it. I couldn't resist. I went to a friends house, he burned it... It's their third best album. Weakest song is My Apocalypse. My favorite so far is Broken Beat & Scarred, and The Judas Kiss. Judas Kiss contains the "Bow down" line, and Unforgiven III is awesome especially toward the last third where Kirk rips your nuts off! I'm still going to buy the thing.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 09:26 PM EST

I know how you feel. I'm glad I've pre-ordered the CD but I want it tonight !!!!

I did check you tube for All Nightmare Long....(i'm gonna burn in hell i know )

My Verdict without spoiling it...
Its so good it made me scream Fuck Yes and wake my kids.

Posted by Devilman @ 09/02/2008 09:27 PM EST

This album fucking OWNS!!! Better then i thought it would be for SURE.

WELCOME BACK METALLICA...its been awhile.

*drool*
Love it!

Posted by Joe Cool @ 09/02/2008 09:32 PM EST

I'm telling you... All nightmare long will make you want to go and punch your neighbor immediately, and no this album does not suffer from vocal harmonies. Kirk plays the very last solo in Redemption

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 09:36 PM EST

damn, the instrumental is really, really shitty. That and Judas Kiss (which is basically an excellent chorus surrounded by meaningless, disjointed riffs) are some of the worst things Metallica have ever done.

Thus far this is along the lines of: 2 really bad songs (suicide, judas), 2 mediocre tunes (TDTNC, UIII), 3 decent songs (Cyanide, BB&S, TEOTL) and 3 good/great song (Apocalypse, TWJYL, Nightmare).

I'd give it somewhere around 80%. Best album since Load. I'm kinda disappointed; here's hoping the songs grow on me.

Posted by caspian @ 09/02/2008 09:44 PM EST

All the fan boy stuff aside... Caspian, I think you hate your mother for giving birth to you... I know I do.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 09:47 PM EST

After listening to the album, I'm happy the "The New Song" got hacked up and put into the right songs.

Posted by Hextall Hates Chelios @ 09/02/2008 09:47 PM EST

There's no way in hell they wait 'til the 12th to release this. I bet it's within the week.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 09:48 PM EST

I am feeling this is their 3rd best effort ever. Great diversity, memorable vocal lines, outstanding riffs and Kirk is outstanding.

Posted by Mark @ 09/02/2008 09:51 PM EST

Motor, I genuinely wanted to love this record? I'm a fanboy just like everyone else here.

Suicide has two useless opening riffs, a middle section that has no sort of emotional impact at all, and an ending that's, well, OK at best. It felt like 100 minutes, not 10.

I can understand if you feel differently; I guess as a Machine Head fan you're easily impressed, right?

On a more agreeable note: it'd surprise me if it's not released by saturday, yeah.

Posted by caspian @ 09/02/2008 09:54 PM EST

Caspian, are you sure you heard the right album? I would be shocked if you really felt that way and in a way feel sorry you cant enjoy this masterpiece due to some preconceived notion in your mind.

Posted by Mark @ 09/02/2008 09:54 PM EST

I think everyone here had an idea of what this album was going to sound like, a 'preconceived notion' if you like, and denying that is foolish. I thought this was going to slay, and about half of it does. (i'd probably put end of the line in the "good songs" category, now).

Calling it a "masterpiece" however is incredibly stupid.

Posted by caspian @ 09/02/2008 09:58 PM EST

I don't know Caspian... maybe I've just been waiting to hear this, but dude... I figured with you swingin from the extra large clitoris of Arch Enemy, you'd appreciate this. This fuckin' album rules! I'm on my third listen. I wanted to hold out, but I couldn't. Broken Beat & Scarred makes me want to go kick the shit out of my neighbor(s)

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 09:58 PM EST

this album does rule, you can tell already.. who's putting out amazing jams like this?.. everything else is trash!

haha

Posted by Tony @ 09/02/2008 10:05 PM EST

I will go out on a limb and say this. The Blackening was the best metal album to come out in the last ten years... until Death Magnetic. That's not knocking Machine Head, it's just how great Metallica is, and if you don't like this album, you convinced yourself not to. Plain and simple. The unforgiven III falls short of the first, but better (a ton) than II

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 10:08 PM EST

i wouldnt disagree about The Blackening Motorbreath...i'd go as far as to say it runs MOP close, so if Death Magnetic is that good...think I'll be kicking the shit out of the neighbours for a while

Posted by Devilman @ 09/02/2008 10:12 PM EST

Hey, where did I say that I liked Arch Enemy? I don't, for the record. In terms of metal I tend to like my doom metal, for the most part, with some old school thrash, death and NWOBHM thrown in. And I didn't say I didn't like the album, damn. Giving an album 80% is pretty positive.

Also, BB&S is super freakin' catchy, it's reminscent of an updated Fuel. It's going to be a killer live tune.

Posted by caspian @ 09/02/2008 10:14 PM EST

Broken beat and scarred kicks my ass.
There is this one particular riff that is so good I want to blow my goo when I hear it.

Posted by manguy @ 09/02/2008 10:25 PM EST

I think that was just your life, broken and nightmare standup as three of their best songs they ever wrote. Not the best, but up with the greats.

SHOW! YOUR! SCARS!!!!

Sorry Larz. I legally own 3 copies of this thing, including the box. You can't ask me not to download it. I have plans to buy one more, so it's not affecting the bottom line.
YouTube links are closing down fast. It'll be on a torrent soon, they need to give it up and release it. Clearly they shipped it already. I think they even knew this was going to happen.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/02/2008 11:15 PM EST

Well, I've just gotten thru my first full listen. I'm not ready to rank it yet amongst the other 8 main albums, but on my first listen, I love what I hear. Stuff sounds great. It's brutal and in your face at times which I love. TDTNC is like a nice little breather after being abused by awesome riffery! The only song(music) I didn't like that much on first listen was the instrumental. However at around 3:00, the instrumental sounds really good. Again, not going to rank it yet, but very very good sounding! Way to go Metallica, Rick Rubin, and everyone else who was part of creating this.

I'm a little disappointed there's no horn at the begining of U3... full review coming.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/02/2008 11:20 PM EST

Damn JD, I thought we were all getting banned. Anyone else think they were in on leak? I do. Look at how fast boards like this are blowing up. I intend to buy two copies of this like every other album of theirs. One to keep packaged, and one to listen to. Caspian... for whatever differences we have... Broken Beat & Scarred gits it for me. I was too disappointed no inverted Aerosmith horn JD.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 09/02/2008 11:30 PM EST

Little tip: Read something while you listen to the album. It takes off the anticipation of waiting for the next riff and lets you just hear it instead of obsessing about each new thing. I'm almost done with End of the Line and just can't believe how fast this first two songs got under my skin. This is an awesome album. There's going to have to be 6 minutes of farting or something to fuck this up. "The slave becomes the master" part is OMFG amazing...

Posted by Azrael @ 09/02/2008 11:34 PM EST

After my last post, I went over to Best Buy and browsed the MetallicA section to see if it was there, but it wasn't. I wanted to ask someone to see if they had it, but on the other hand, I didn't want to. I went to Wal-Mart and the same thing. Maybe we'll hear some new info. from the boys about an early release. Man, it's hard to read the stuff on the boards right now and not give in to temptation!

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 09/02/2008 11:40 PM EST

indeed, James sounds fired up.

I thought the "slave becomes the master" bit sounded vaguely like RATM when it's played over one of the riffs.

Judas Kiss grew on me! It's still not all that great, but it's now load quality, not St. Anger quality. (Instrumental still sucks, though).

Sorry for the continued raving and large amounts of posts I've been doing, I'm just so excited there's new Metallica, and the tunes are increasingly growing on me! THEY'RE BACK!!!!

Motor, let's set aside our differences for this thread and just celebrate (among other things) Broken Beat & Scarred and all the epic tunes and riffs that are on this album! I can't wait to hear it in CD quality.

FUCK YEAH TALLICAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA \m/

Posted by sean @ 09/02/2008 11:41 PM EST

Just talking to my buddy who's in the record industry. He says that there is already a HUGE stink going around about this. he got into details on how exactly this french buisness got hold of the album so early but I won't bore you guys with the details. Long story short there's a loop hole that they took advantage of.

But the record labels are going ape shit over this. Apparently the guy that released the GNR album early is looking at doing time because the labels want to use him as an example.

But now Q Prime is stirring up some real shit over all this. Their obviously gonna lose millions over the early release. At first I wasn't to concerned until I thought about it. Metallica's name will be used in all the media as WHY Q Prime is sueing people. Which means NAPSTER shit all over again!!! Metallicas good name being dragged through the mud if this goes farther...

But I'm just gonna try and put all that shit out of my head and just keep listening to this album. 3rd song in and loving it.

I agree Caspian. I turned 30 this year, and know Metallica is closer to calling it a day now, than versus when I was 19. Suicide and Redemption is kinda slow, but I dig James's solos. Is it me or does Kirk's playing scream "Hey Zakk, Dime, Dave, and all you young kids...I'm still the baddest motherfucker in the land!" Lars Drumming is really good... kinda snarey at times, but he keeps that thunderous beat, and what he doesn't have technically he more than makes up with feel. James voice... Great surprise. This fucking ass album is kicking ass. I called in sick tomorrow because I went to get a case of beer, and I have this fucker on repeat while I'm playing online poker!

Via Blabbermouth:

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on the premature release of the band's new album, "Death Magnetic", via a French record store. A shop in Paris reportedly sold a number of copies of the CD this morning well ahead of its official September 12 worldwide release date — with illegal "Death Magnetic" MP3 files making their way online by this afternoon.

During a guest appearance earlier today on "The Woody Show" on the San Francisco, California radio station Live 105 (KITS 105.3 FM), Ulrich stated about the French leak, "Listen, we're ten days from release. I mean, from here, we're golden. If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. Happy days. Trust me. Ten days out and it hasn't quote-unquote fallen off the truck yet? Everybody's happy. It's 2008 and it's part of how it is these days, so it's fine. We're happy."

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/03/2008 12:04 AM EST

was listening to Garage Inc earlier today and noticed how loud the snare was on the Garage Days Re-Revisited songs, and remembered how Rick said he thought that was the recording where they sounded most like a band, I think he may have shot for that sound... so I noticed there's almost no double-bass in the 3 songs we'd already heard, but it's all over the place many of these songs... UIII is amazing powerful like Bleeding Me, but ever more so... wow.
JD, just kill off the links. Leave the comments unless you get a C&D, which I can't imagine at this point. The links will be dead before long anyway.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/03/2008 12:06 AM EST

JD- deleting links is fine, but there's nothing bad about discussing the album, surely? Don't go too overboard, now.

Also, I'm glad Ulrich has stated that they're ok with it, if a big legal thing does happen (which it probably will) then it seems that metallica won't be sullied with it.

Broken Beat and Scarred REALLY fucking does it for me... I will literally not be able to drive a car while listening to that song... Show... your... scars... I can't wait to hear that one live in concert. Fuck, I hope they play all the songs live over the next year.

Posted by D-J @ 09/03/2008 12:38 AM EST

Ok, first complete listen done and I agree with Ole... "Thank you, Rick Rubin!"
I loved UIII, S&R, and JK. That vocal effect on the chorus of JK is pretty evil, very reminiscent of Astronomy... The first 3 songs are some of the best first 3 on any album I can think of. These songs are mature, but just silly heavy... the thing Bob Rock never achieved because he didn't understand the Genre, Rick Rubin pulls off while making it look easy. This from a guy that speaks so many musical languages fluently. I'm in awe of the band's delivery of this album... (Holy Shit end of the line is a great song) but Rick deserves the credit he is going to get.
I'm with Caspian, 8 or 9/10. With more listens I might upgrade to 9.5. It's just really impressive. I'm gonna shut up and listen now.

Posted by Azrael @ 09/03/2008 12:43 AM EST

I can definitely see myself crashing my car to the Show Your Scars bit. The heaviest Metallica moment yet? And here's hoping that they play some fairly DM-heavy sets, particularly when they come to Australia. I imagine they're keen on playing these tunes, too, surely they're getting sick of the constant 80's tunes.

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 12:45 AM EST

I am two tracks (and three beers) in, and I must pick my face up off the floor... because it has MELTED OFF! THIS ALBUM FUCKING OWNS!!!!!!! I am saving the rest for tomorrow. Azrael, you are FAR from alone. Minds are blowing and faces are melting all over the world right now... I agree, that bow down shit from Judas Kiss is definitely badass. Right now I am really getting off from Broken Beat and Scarred. That main riff has gotta be one of the coolest things my ears have ever heard, EVER. Heavy as fuck and grooving too. Show... Your... Scars!!! Damn, this whole album... I mean, fuck! This kinda shit really puts all other bands in their place - below Metallica in the heavy metal food chain. Its not that the other bands aren't good, its just that Metallica is so mindblowingly fuckingly ridiculously badass, and this proves it. I've got a frog in my throat listening to some of this shit.

Sure some songs were stronger than others, and we will mildly bicker over our favorites as time goes on, but I am confident of this my metallifriends: Death Magnetic=Instant Classic perid

oops. I meant period

have to review the album for the weekly magazine I work for. Only listened to 'This Was Just Your Life', and I already have a paragraph worth of praisings. This is shaping up to be a latter day classic.

i still cant find the full album? and yes, i do plan to buy it!!

Posted by DemonGT @ 09/03/2008 09:09 AM EST

Now that I have heard the album, I thought it would be interesting to re-read the reviews to see how closely they came to describing the album... Then I realized, there was no way in hell anyone could possibly prepare us for the onslaught of destruction this album just unleashed... I wish I could rank the songs but its nearly impossible - they all rock so hard. I think I am slightly more hooked to Broken Beat & Scarred, but then again they are all so awesome. I got 4 hours of sleep last night because of DM.

Damn guys, this album is incredibly easy to find. Don't be so damn lazy and do it yourself.

protips: search for these on google.

metallica death magnetic blogspot
and add rapidshare/megaupload/mediafire/etc to it. you'll find it in no time.

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 10:16 AM EST

This album makes the concept of releasing a single obselete. They should just release the whole album to the radio. I just gave U3 a real good listen, reading lyrics on metallicabb... That song is really really amazing.

Posted by D-J @ 09/03/2008 10:49 AM EST

This album mixes basically everything i love about the old shit with everything i love about the black-load era. wow, i mean, i am just totally amazed. this album is just amazing beyond words. great job! still cannot wait to get the CD in my hands

The Judas Kiss is my fave right now--love that song!

Posted by EET FUK @ 09/03/2008 11:45 AM EST

Also digging James' S&R soloing.

BBS
Judas Kiss
My Apocalypse

Are my current top three. I am sure that will change as others grow on me or mood I am in.

Ok, already changed:

All Nightmare long rules too much.

try this too..
i don't know if it works, i'm gonna wait for the cd

Posted by hardivic @ 09/03/2008 12:28 PM EST

thanks hardivic. I just got it and have no guilt whatsoever. Why? Because I pre-ordered TWO packages. The original highest level one, then the coffin box one. Therefore, after paying about $250, I don't have any guilties about it. Now, I gotta listen to it. From what I've heard so far(life, judas, apcocolypse, cyanide, nightmate, tdtnc), I love it and it won't be replaced in my car for many moons(guess I'll be forgetting about the new slipknot disc).

Posted by kurt @ 09/03/2008 12:45 PM EST

I've been restraining myself from downloading anything but the first three that were officially released (although I'm sure I'll give in soon) but I've enjoyed reading your posts. I had to check metal-rules.com, a site that is notorious for metalli-bashing, to check the latest Death Magnetic thread (Yes, they have a thread dedicated to a band they love to hate). And to my SHOCK, 98% of the posts so far are extremely positive. The other two percent are lukewarm, which says even more IMO. It's getting harder to restrain myself!!! Hold me back!

Posted by Seth @ 09/03/2008 12:48 PM EST

1.Judas Kiss
2.All Nightmare Long
3.Unforgiven 3
Besides that I have no idea cause they are all fukin sweet. I dunno if anyone feels the same way but Cyanide appears to be the weakest IMO, wonder why they chose that to be the first song everyone heard.

Posted by Mark @ 09/03/2008 12:51 PM EST

Like all songs, least favorite (but doesn't mean it's bad) is Cyanide, the best is BBS (at the moment).

I'm not going to download music illegaly, going to wait for my CD.

I think the U3 solo is james.

If you paid for MM platinum and your wife watches it..is she a theif? If you already bought the album are you a thief? If I go over your house and I hit "play" on youtube..am I stealing your ears?

Posted by sean @ 09/03/2008 01:00 PM EST

they are playing the whole album on the radio..are you gonna bring your boombox to the police station.

Posted by sean @ 09/03/2008 01:02 PM EST

Sean brings up an interesting point. The thing about technology in this day and age,is that almost everything is at our fingertips. I am quite certain that I gave spent well into the thousands on metallica albums, merchandise, and tickets. I have been listening to the boys for twenty years. You know what. I think I have earned the right as a fan to check out youtube for song leaks. I plan on getting the coffin set, and a regular version of the disc on Sept, 12 or whenever it gets released. In the meantime I have no problem listening to "leaks" until the hard copy comes out. Call me a theif, call me immoral, call me impatient. The fact is I along with many others, have been waiting for this album since St. Anger slowly faded away. Now that I can listen a little early because of technological advancements, I figure what the hell. They are still going to get my coin when it finally comes out for real.

Posted by ole @ 09/03/2008 01:17 PM EST

My whole issue is this: Am I stealing? Because as a rock/metal fan since I was a kid(kiss concert at either 8 or 9 years old), I hate that internet theft has really hurt many bands that I would like to see thrive. Have I downloaded disc prior to their release? Yes. DM, Black Rain, All Hope is Gone, United Abominations. However, I also purchased every one of these from the store to support the bands I like. If you get it early and don't financially support the band, then you are stealing and hurting the chances a band you like will be able to continue(mostly applying to the younger bands).

Posted by kurt @ 09/03/2008 02:09 PM EST

Damn I got it bad... I just got a little tear in my eye thinking about being at a Metallica show and rocking along to Broken Beat & Scarred for the first time. Show... Your... Scars!!!

Posted by D-J @ 09/03/2008 02:19 PM EST

How can it be stealing if you are going to buy the album? What difference does it make to Metallica that you heard the music 10 days before you give them your money or not? It's kinda silly to think that way.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 09/03/2008 02:49 PM EST

Wow this album is pretty fing good! I'll dish out the $10 when it comes out for sure. I don't like spending money on something and having it suck. Same reason why I never paid money for Load. It wasn't worth it for me.

Posted by die on your feet @ 09/03/2008 03:03 PM EST

there are some people who would decide not to purchase now that they have heard it, or that they can wait until they have enough allowance instead of begging mommy and daddy for it the day it comes out. i'm not positive but i think that any band, just like a movie coming out, wants to see how well it did the first week, and this leak could compromise that. that really sucks because they worked so hard for this and we(myself included) can't be thankful enough to wait until when they want us to hear it...i honestly feel like buying a case of the album and handing it out to everyone i know, but that seems a bit idiotic. I'll just go buy the suggested two and make up for the assholes ripping and burning it

Posted by Curtis Moon @ 09/03/2008 03:11 PM EST

caspian, i searched for two hours on limewire and google and everything i found was a dead end...lead links or error.if it was so easy to find i wouldnt of ask where people were getting it....duh...think before you speak son.

Posted by DemonGT @ 09/03/2008 03:16 PM EST

oh, the album is awsome... anyone know what comes with the limited edition?

Posted by DemonGT @ 09/03/2008 03:17 PM EST

Curtis, you raise a good point, but to me ,logic dictates that if it is a good album, (which most of us that have listened to it seem to believe that it is) it will sell no matter what. I actually think these leaks will help sell the album, not hurt the sales, because so far, 90% of the reviews I have read have been postitive. There will always be cheapskates and tightwads who won't ante up, but i have the utmost confidence that the bands TRUE and LOYAL fans (I know that sounds generic, so forgive me) will still pay their hard earned cash for the album.
I applaud the patience and preseverence of those who are idly waiting to hear the "real" album, but trust me folks, after hearing the masterpiece that I heard last night, I am totally happy for making the choice to listen early. I guess I'm just a metallica junkie.

Posted by ole @ 09/03/2008 04:43 PM EST

I'm working tomorrow and will limited access to the internet (basically just my iPhone, which isn't met.com or mm.com friendly - frigging flash!). So the radio is my best shot... but so far there are no stations announced!! It's only a little more than 24 hours aways.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/03/2008 04:52 PM EST

I love Judas Kiss to death... but, man it's just too long. Does it really need what amounts to two intro riffs? James vox are incredible on it... but they need to edit themselves a little more.

Posted by IS-JD @ 09/03/2008 05:04 PM EST

Why haven't we heard from The General, yet. You gotta have an opinion, bro.

Posted by ole @ 09/03/2008 05:06 PM EST

i's be around. Been listening to DM all day, and working a little too. The riffing on Judas Kiss is fassssssssst. All these songs are meant to be played live. I actually like all the songs. The instrumental is cool as well. Some of the trax are a shade too long, but that's cool. I was listening to Justice from Ozzfest the other day, and had to forward to the next song, cause I thought my cd was skipping - it was so long. BBS is REALLY good. Everything is fast. Can't wait to hear DM on CD and on some good speakers.

The itch for the new album grows. Its just around the corner. Can't wait for DM day!

Posted by Lepper @ 09/03/2008 06:36 PM EST

Laziale, I admire your will power. But what if something bad happens between now and September 12th that prevents you from hearing it? Like, an unfortunate accident where you go deaf, or even die? Are you willing to take that risk? I mean, Metallica won't care, really. In fact, they are excited about everyone listening to it. They WANT us to listen to it. I guarantee they are reading the posts on MetallicaBB to hear all the awesome feedback. Death Magnetic is now!

Posted by D-J @ 09/03/2008 07:48 PM EST

I'm pretty excited about the new album, but I had it already set in my mind that it wont be released till the 12th.. so I'll wait. Yeah.. I stll buy cds

Posted by Yukoner @ 09/03/2008 08:10 PM EST

The whole "I won't listen, I'm not going to steal" thing going on in some cases here is just insufferably self righteous. Metallica aren't losing any money if you hear it early, and hell, even if you don't buy the CD (which most of us are, thus making the "I still buy CDs" thing completely irrelevant), you're depriving them of what, $1? At the most?

Posted by caspian @ 09/03/2008 08:20 PM EST

I just read an article in a guitar magazine the other day that said bands used a tour as the promotional tool for an album. Today, bands actually use the album as the promotional tool for the tour. In other words, with people downloading music and record companies Fing bands in the A, things have flip flopped to where touring is where bands can make the most money. Interesting article. Sorry, I forget which magazine it was in, but Metallica was on the cover of this magazine and another one in Barnes And Noble, so if you head over there, you should see them.

Posted by D-J @ 09/03/2008 09:07 PM EST

Holy crap. If someone wants to wait, let them wait. Why tear them a new one??
They don't do it they way you do, so they are wrong?
Get off your own high horses!

I have listened to it myself, but I respect someone who wants to wait. To each their own.

Saying "what happens if you have an accident and go deaf between now and then".
Frig, thats rationalizing. The same thing people do when they committ a crime.
If the guy goes deaf, I think he has bigger things to worry about.
(denote sarcasm)

Posted by manguy @ 09/03/2008 09:49 PM EST

HEY GENERAL LOL... I happened to read the description of that boombox ur bidding on, and if it's that exact one.. in the description it states the cassette dials don't work and one of the doors is missing. These speedbumps would not be conducive to a positive Death Magnetic listening experience.

Posted by blaster.. BLASTER (of Muppets) @ 09/04/2008 01:07 AM EST

Whoa, The General made a cameo. Dudes I'm in my totally drunk happy mode listening to DM for the fourth time, and I just want to give a shout out to IS-JD, general, sean, azriel, caspian my cousin Mikey (I'm a sorry excuse for a relative, I can never remember his IS postname) and all the other faithful that have been posting over the years. Fuck I'm like a giddy 10 year old child that got to open his Christmas present early. The irony that I got listen to the new album in the dawning minutes of my thirtieth birthday will always have a signifigant meaning to me, and I'm honored and proud to have shared it with so many cool people, so many cool fuckin metallica fans. Anyways, i'm going to fade away into the rest of the record.

Hey General, I suggest picking up some good stereo HIFI headphones. I have a set of Sonys that I use when record my own sorry excuse for art, and they work great for recording and listening to stuff off the net. Right now I'm Listening to a quality post of my fav off the album, All Nightmare Long, on Youtube, and the sound quality is fantastic. Just tryin to help a brutha out.

Posted by ole @ 09/04/2008 03:33 AM EST

I don't give a shit what anyone says, Suicide and Redemption is a damn good tune. It's just nasty all the way through.

Posted by ole @ 09/04/2008 03:54 AM EST

I know I said That I was going to fade away into the record, but I can't stop raving about All Nightmare Long. Far and away the best Met song I've heard since I disappear. LUCK RUNS OUT! I'll HUNT YOU DOWN WITHOUT MERCY! I'LL HUNT YOU DOWN ALL NIGHTMARE LONG. Robs bass line sets it all up.
Whew, four posts in a row. Thats a record for me. Sorry for being an annoying metaiicrazed asshole. I'll blame it on the Johnny Walker.

Posted by ole @ 09/04/2008 04:27 AM EST

that's metalicrazed asshole. yup. definitely the Johnny Walker

Posted by ole @ 09/04/2008 05:04 AM EST

I love the album. It is heavier than I thought it would be. My only critisism is that Suicide and Redemption dosn't have enough light and shade. All the other met instrumentals have slow melodic sections but there is only a small bit in Suicide and Redemption. Apart from that it's a kick as album.
