08/20/2008 Entry: "THE DAY COMES..."

Thursday, August 21st at 11 AM, Pacific Standard time. 2 PM Eastern.

Convert to your timezone here.

UPDATE: "The Day That Never Comes" debuts in a little more than three hours. Mission: Metallica is offering a download of the single to its platinum members. The single will also be available on iTunes. ...is the version debuting today the album version or is it a radio/single edit?

UPDATE 2: Added apparent single artwork, the version on iTunes seems to be 7:56 long... and already available to Australian iTunes users.

Our interpretation of lyrics for both new songs.

The Day That Never Comes
Born to push you around
Better just stay down
You pull away, he hits the flesh, you hit the ground
Mouth so full of lies
Tender, black: your eyes
Just keep them closed, keep praying, just keep waiting

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
But. the sunshine never comes, no
No, the sunshine never comes

Push across that line
Just stay down this time
Hide in your self, crawl in your self, you’ll have your time
God, I'll make them pay
Take you back one day
I’ll end this day, I’ll splatter color on this grey

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
But, the sunshine never comes

Love is a four letter word
A never spoken care
Love is a four letter word
Here in this prison

I suffer this no longer
I'll put an end to this I swear
This I swear
The sun will shine
This I swear
This I swear
This
I
swear

Cyanide (LIVE - From Ozzfest)
Sleep and dream of this
Death angel's kiss
Brings final rest
Don't believe it
Empty are they
Death, won't you let me stay?

Empty they say
Death, won't you call your name
ooh, call your name
Suicide I've already died
It's just the funeral I've been waiting for
Cyanide
Living dead inside
Break this empty shell forever more

Wait, wait patiently
Your death, black wings
Unfolding swift
Spreading for me
Empty they say
Death, won't you let me stay?

Empty they say
Death, hear me call your name
Ooh, call your name
Suicide I've already died
It's just the funeral I've been waiting for
Cyanide
Living dead inside
Break this empty shell forever more

Say is that rain or are they tears
That stain your concrete face for years?
Crying, weeping, shedding strife
Year after year
Life after life

An air of freshly broken ground
A concrete angel led right down
on the knave? that swallows fast
There's peace at last, oh, peace at last

Empty they say
Death, won't you let me stay?
Empty they say
Death, hear me call your name
Ooh, call your name
Suicide I've already died
It's just the funeral I've been waiting for
Cyanide
Living dead inside
Break this empty shell forever more
Forever more
Forever more
Just the funeral I've been waiting for

im not so sure.. hmmm

Posted by adnrew @ 08/20/2008 05:20 PM EST

1 and 2 seem rubbish to me, i just hope its not st anger 2 again..

guess i need to hear the whole thing before i pass comments like this.. i really hope im jumping the gun, also need to hear the snippett within the context of the whole song and album... with oh well not long to go now. Been really liking some of the fly on the wall stuff... hmm cool

Posted by andrew @ 08/20/2008 05:23 PM EST

If you have an ear for music you would realize that you are jumping the gun. These riffs from the tastes of death and fotw stuff sound NOTHING like St. Anger. Settle down buddy...

Posted by Nick @ 08/20/2008 05:54 PM EST

Rubish???? The first sample is killer! Listen to it right to the end, that shits right from the MOP/AJFA era...

Just got my issue of So What! The return of the Ripper

Posted by Bond @ 08/20/2008 07:22 PM EST

Andrew, I know you have been here for a while, so I am sure you have heard "The New Song" Riff two is part of that song, and can you actually say that "The New Song" sounded like somthing from St. Anger? I mean, it didnt sound like old school Metallica, but it didnt sound like St. Anger either, to me it sounded like a mix between The Black Album, and Load. Guess we will not know until tomorrow though, I think I am jumping the gun myself.

Posted by Robert @ 08/20/2008 07:55 PM EST

Another deathly taste of what's to come...

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 08/20/2008 11:21 PM EST

When your in the right mood for it, St.Anger kicks some serious ass! Quit crying about the St.Anger album, already. It's getting really fuckin' boring and old. After hearing the latest taste of Death...go ahead and mark my words, I think the new album is going blow every album, from any other band, including Metallica in nearly 20 years, it's going to rival Metallica's untouchable early years...MIND BLOWING NEW SHIT IS ON THE WAY!!!!

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 08/20/2008 11:37 PM EST

Death Magnetic will blow them all out of the water...get ready for Metallica's new album to make some serious fuckin' waves!!! HELL FUCKIN' YEAH!!!!!

It all starts tomorrow.

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 08/20/2008 11:44 PM EST

"It's getting really fuckin' boring and old. "

You describe St.Anger pretty well there.

It's a Metallica board thing, therefore people are allowed to comment on things about them. Get over it.

could ProTools could ruin an album, or just make it not as good as it could be?

Posted by The General @ 08/21/2008 12:34 AM EST

depends, general. Pro Tools has some pretty rad features, but can also encourage laziness. It's like pretty much anything- when used right it sounds great, when used poorly (i.e looping riffs) it doesn't. Tell you what, though, recording and editing with Pro Tools is way easier then Tape.

Posted by caspian @ 08/21/2008 01:03 AM EST

I think protools is great, but it's also a trend

Posted by Tony @ 08/21/2008 01:04 AM EST

It's far, far more then a trend. Computers are getting increasingly better, digital (and thus Pro Tools and the like) is getting more and more accurate, it's far easier to use and much cheaper for the band doing their first demo. No, Pro Tools and the like are here to stay.

Posted by caspian @ 08/21/2008 03:18 AM EST

Fuck me dead - its mayhem over at metallicab.com. The server has crashed as someone has posted the single is now available on Australian itunes and there were nealy 400 people viewing the topic when I was last in there.

Any itunes subscribers from Oz who can check it out? I'm in Australia but don't have itunes.

TALLICA RULES THE WORLD

Posted by Waverley73 @ 08/21/2008 10:01 AM EST

A few minutes ago i was on the official metallica forum. Within seconds a post from an australian guy was read by 300 people. Now the official board is dead! It seems that the day that never comes can be downloaded from the itunes in australia. There is also an 30 second clip from the song.

Posted by Gert-Jan @ 08/21/2008 10:02 AM EST

haha Waverley73 I'm from holland (europe) 300+ people who are checking this from all over the world. I'm sure the day that never comes will be on youtube within a hour.

Posted by Gert-Jan @ 08/21/2008 10:05 AM EST

Hey there Gert-Jan. It seems to be back up. Crazy stuff waiting for this song to emerge.

Posted by Waverley73 @ 08/21/2008 10:09 AM EST

hey general protools is here to stay...its the job of a good producer to make the album sound as real as possible (not digital in this case)

Posted by xino @ 08/21/2008 10:24 AM EST

Three and half hours to go... just read on M:M that M:Mers get to download the single and it will be available on iTunes.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/21/2008 10:38 AM EST

I'm using protools and it's kinda gay.. i mean it lets you do everything, make everything just right, but isn't recording all about the process? pro tools strips so much of the process from what could actually be possible when making a record..... i'd prefer analog honestly, it just costs so much more, why? because it takes way more time, and sounds so much better. no screen bullshit, making everything so anal, beating the life out of the recording. I know how it is, i've been recording this shit for months now with pro tools and yes, it's cool..Oh tap this snare over a couple frames and whatnot, but overall... it's either gonna go back to analog, or new to some weird phase, of like nintendo WII studio..where you don't even need instruments, you can just swing your arms in the air

Posted by Tony @ 08/21/2008 10:40 AM EST

"analog sounds so much better".

Sorry, I stopped reading from there.

Seriously though, pro tools isn't responsible for making music completely sterile and far too tight. I've recorded stuff on pro tools that sounds loose and raw- and honestly, while I agree that tape does sound a little bit better the difference is slight, to say the least- unless if you're using a real huge amount of tape saturation the average person (and I dare say the average audio engineer) won't notice a difference.

Posted by caspian @ 08/21/2008 10:46 AM EST

its ok for half-ass..but not grammy shit haha

Posted by Tony @ 08/21/2008 10:48 AM EST

Tony, I'm not using ProTools. Although I am using software that is considerably more basic than PT, it's still the same basic concept. I find that it supports my creative process and enables me to much more creative than my old analog recorder.

Yes, what I am doing is what I consider "cheating" - looping riffs or finding that one amazing take and repeating it. Or just simply assembling bits and pieces that work better. Stuff I could ever do on my old Tascam Four track.... and unbelievable cheaper. This makes it so much easier to find those "happy little accidents" that I could never repeat. Granted, most of the stuff I've recorded is more of an assembly process... but it's helping me to learn to write songs better and its making me a better player and (hopefully) musician.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/21/2008 10:49 AM EST

I agree, I use Cubase, it helps with things, but i just miss classic albums, and what made them so classic was the process

Posted by Tony @ 08/21/2008 10:54 AM EST

It seems everyone always misses the previous generations recording process in some form or another. Soon we'll be hearing how people miss the good ol' digital days before everything was lasers and direct neural connections...

I personally like digital recording processes over analog, sounds better to my ears.

Does anyone know how to get the splash screen to pop up on M:M again?

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/21/2008 10:59 AM EST

Log out of your M:M account, then go back to missionmetallica.com.

That should work.

Wow... Those 30 seconds were amazing... I am dying here! I think I am gonna need to be along at 2:00 pm when I hear this the first time. MetallicaBB is officially down now.

Posted by D-J @ 08/21/2008 11:25 AM EST

MetallicaBB is dead, someone shared the DRM'd version on the board. I got it but it's worthless, DRM wins again.

I think I'm just going to take a nap for the next 2.5 hours. This is killing me...

Taste of Death 4 sounds like the riff they played in the MTV clip for The Day That Never Comes.

Posted by EET FUK @ 08/21/2008 12:01 PM EST

I'm 30 and I feel like I'm 14 again waking up on Christmas morning. I live in Alaska so we get to hear it at 10:00 here. Less time to wait after waking up this morning. Although this hardly makes up for the fact that Metallica plays in Anchorage once a decade.

Cool artwork(is that James?)It's like taken from the ...Justice days!

shit, production sounds so thin and light... song sounds cool tho

Posted by toolish @ 08/21/2008 12:13 PM EST

It's gonna be really wierd have two songs (The New Songs 1 & 2) appear on Death Magnetic in pieces of other songs.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/21/2008 12:17 PM EST

Agreed. We're going to be expecting one thing to follow a riff and we're going to get something entirely different. Kinda cool though.

Posted by Seth @ 08/21/2008 12:20 PM EST

Nice work updating us with the single cover art, IS! Kinda reminds me of one of the tight shots of Tuco in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

andrew, I'm not sure which song you listened to, but this is about 180-degrees from St. Anger.

Sounds like a spiritual successor to AJFA (with some Fade thrown in).

the part right before the solo reminds me of Fight Fire with Fire and then when it starts to chug along sounds like The Mercyful Fate Medley the part With "Come Come into my coven. I fucking love it. And you can tell the lyrics are all Het's

Posted by toolish @ 08/21/2008 02:19 PM EST

The snare is really loud isn't it?---I see where they were coming from with the "One" comparison. And Kirk is right, his soloing does sound Angus Young-ish in places. Gonna take a few more listens to take it all in...but I think I like it!

Posted by EET FUK @ 08/21/2008 02:21 PM EST

Better than anything that they have done in ages, im listening for the 4th time !!

I so need the Best quality version.

Im liking it now, i see the Fade to Black influence..

Thank you metallica !!! and thankyou for The site JD been coming back and forth since 97 !!

Its a great little community :)

I think the song is a little meandering, but if they took out the "Love is a four letter word" part it would be much better.

Posted by edubbs @ 08/21/2008 02:39 PM EST

Once the vocals end and hard riffing/soloing begin...you can't say it doesn't remind you of One

OK, so when is the video for this song going to be aired??

The second clean riff almost sounds like the song Echo beach.

The Ripper is back! Speaking of which, I think I just cleared my wing of the office with one.

I don't hear any of that clipping sound, but my computer isn't exactly a quality sound system. This will be burned immediately and be in my car for quite a while.

Man I heard this song in my car turned way up and it sounded perfect, heavy as hell and I am 35 been a fan since 1986 and I was a bit emotional hearing it for the first time. I think this is everything we have hoped for without imitating the past. This song is so heavy with so much going on, I love the guitar work. I love James playing on this, and Kirk as well.

Posted by Mark @ 08/21/2008 03:15 PM EST

Point being that if you have not heard it on a kick ass stereo you have not experienced it. It is mixed awesome.

Please help me figure out two more words. Thanks!

verse - born to push you around
better just stay down
you pull away, he hits the flesh you hit the ground
mouth so full of lies, tender like your eyes
just keep them closed, keep praying, just keep waiting

chorus - waiting on, the day that never comes
when you stand up and feel the (one?)
but the sunshine never comes
no, no the sunshine never comes

verse 2 - push across that line, just stay down this time
hide in yourself, crawl in yourself, you'll have your time
god'll make them pay, take you back one day
i'll end this day, i'll spot a color on this grave

chorus

bridge - love is a four letter word, and never spoke in (hell?)
love is a four letter word, here in this prison
i suffer this no longer, i put it into, this i swear, this i swear,
the sun will shine, this i swear, this i swear, this I swear

Posted by Garrett @ 08/21/2008 03:19 PM EST

The word "one' you have in brackets, I was hearing "warmth" which makes sense next to sunshine.

I think "hell" might be "here"

Born to push you around

You pull away, he hits the flesh, you hit the ground
Mouth so full of lies
Tender, black: your eyes
Just keep them closed, keep praying, just keep waiting

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
But. the sunshine never comes, no
No, the sunshine never comes

Push across that line
Just stay down this time
Hide in your self, crawl in your self, you’ll have your time
God, I'll make them pay
Take you back one day
I’ll end this day, I’ll splatter color on this grey

Waiting for the one
The day that never comes
When you stand up and feel the warmth
But, the sunshine never comes

Love is a four letter word
A never spoken care
Love is a four letter word

Well, it was by accident, but I actually got to hear this first on the radio. Anyway, those last few minutes definitely got the One feel to it. The first half kind of reminds me of a mix between TBA and Justice with a little bit of the Load era thrown in as well (especially the singing).

I've listened to it twice now. Better the second time. I agree the singing in the beginning might take a little bit to get used to. The stuff at the end is awesome.

Can't wait to hear the rest of album.

I think it's "mouth so full of lies...tend to block your eyes"

everything else is right

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 08/21/2008 03:49 PM EST

Some of the riffs are a little reminiscent of stuff we've heard before, but mostly because that's the way our brains work... "This sounds like something I've memorized" The second 3rd listens pretty much clear that up as you aren't trying to associate it with existing experience.
This thing is totally overwhelming the sound card on my computer. Rick is known for recording stuff really loud, so that isn't surprising... looking forward to hearing on a good system, but this is what I have at work. Very cool song... "Most downbeat"? That's scary.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/21/2008 03:56 PM EST

the lyrics could take on a few different meanings, that being one, and of course what the video will portray, it balso works on a loneliness and missing someone level.

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 08/21/2008 04:07 PM EST

Dude... that song is fucking SICK!!! Sounds like something straight out of RTL/MOP era. It starts out slow, builds up momentum and hits you like a fucking FREIGHT TRAIN!!!! If I have one little criticism, I think the end solo bit is a bit too long and repetitive. But, apart from that, THANK YOU RIK RUBIN and WELCOME BACK METALLICA!!!!! totally agree this is a tip of the hat to the old school days. I'm not feeling the middle part yet...kinda takes away from the smooth groove to thrash smack in your face...but it'll grow. Does anyone feel that for once a RADIO edit of this might make it much more listenable to a wider variety of people?? I hope. James voice sounds strong during the chorus...15 years younger!

Im not gonna post here every 5 minutes like back in the day. These days I have some semblance of a life and my acne has finally cleared up. However I had to post when I heard this new song. Im suprised but this song is actually pretty impressive. What strikes me most about this song is that it is mature metal. Jamez voice is just not as dynamic as it used to be but he holds his own. The complex guitar melodies show that metallica actually still remember how to play their instruments. St anger from a technical standpoint is a complete joke my 12 year old brother can play any of those songs by ear on the first try, However this song lets metallica show that they have actually grown as musicians over the years. This song can almost be classified as progressive rock. Its a real throwback to the new wave of british heavy metal that influenced them in the first place. Im anxiously looking forward to hear the rest of the album.

I don't know. I think I'm the wrong person to answer a question about radio edits. I'm not sure there's ever been one that I've liked better than the full unedtied version.

Reading those lyrics, I definitely get a domestic violence feel to them. But, as mentioned, with James, you can often read different meanings into his lyrics.

Posted by Trace @ 08/21/2008 04:40 PM EST

Wow, this song even brought a LOSO appearance. It seems to me these lyrics are about domestic violence("he hits the flesh, you hit the ground"). Amazing how many posts are going on everywhere. Blabbermouth is around 400 on this one already. I'm REALLY not getting any work done this afternoon.

Posted by kurt @ 08/21/2008 04:47 PM EST

Do any of you guys know about the practice of releasing less than perfect quality singles before an album comes out? The mp3 does sound clear, but it also sounds more distorted than it should. Some guys on metallicabb are saying they did this. I hope thats the case and the one of the album doesn't have the distortion. Are you guys hearing the distortion in the mp3?

Posted by D-J @ 08/21/2008 04:55 PM EST

I had to make sure my BOSE speakers were not going bad...there is quite a bit of distortion, not clear crisp sound thats for sure. I can do without that distortion.

i love the song, but the mix is too loud and not nice to to the ear, ie it keeps being distorted, and it sounds yuck.

The song is great and gets better with every listen.

Someone on the Met board brought this up but is it me or is the opening riff of the song the same riff of the acoustic version of All Within My Hands (at the Bridge School gig) during the "Love is Control..." part around the 1:05 mark.

Otherwise, the song kicks ass.

Just read that there were no harmony vocals recorded for Death Magnetic. Well, that's a disappointment... and explains some of what I (initially) felt was weakness in the vocals of the TDTNC... I was hoping for something very powerful vocalwise from this album... and I think the harmonies help make that possible.

Posted by theoutlawthatfailed @ 08/21/2008 06:39 PM EST

During the Loves is a 4 letter word part is sounds to anyway that the line is "Love is a 4 letter word, and never spoken here." Is makes sense since love is seen a curse word or a taboo. Anyways that just my two cents I could be way off base, other than than that the lyrics look and fit pretty damn good.

I bet the first solo at the intro is done by Mighty Hetfield.

Posted by ZeNosD3AD @ 08/21/2008 07:32 PM EST

Way better than St. Anger thank goodness! From an armchair perspective I would have left off the last solo to shorten the song and keep it tight. The ending part is sweet! I give it an A overall though!

Posted by Metal in AR @ 08/21/2008 08:15 PM EST

I love the song, but I am not a fan of the intro solo at all. Too basic... Nice observation JD on the no harmony vocals. I think that will be the biggest downfall of this album. I wish they would have had harmonies. Not gonna lie I am a little disappointed about that. Where did you read that????

vocals in the mellow section are kind of weak, otherwise I think I creamed my pants.

It gets better after several listens...sounds like two or maybe even three songs in one. Wonder what influenced those lyrics?? The distortion is the same no matter where you get the song from. I guess I just don't understand the thinking behind the way ot was mixed - too loud!

Posted by Cooper @ 08/21/2008 09:07 PM EST

All criticisms so far seem to be relatively minor. From first listen to this, it seems like they have done the right thing in getting back in touch with their roots and leaving the nineties / naughties shit behind. I've had it going over and over for the last 6 hours. This is the Metallica that I remember and started listening to in 1988. FUCK YEAH!!! METALLICA ARE BACK, BEE-OTCHES!!!!

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 08/21/2008 09:08 PM EST

First off, damn, it took me forever to read the posts! I've been gone all day and I went to Met's site when I got home to see if the song was on. I've listened to it about 5 times now and I think it's pretty cool. There's a lot of stuff going on with the 2 solos and the dualing guitars. A couple things that stick out: 1) the beginning guitar sound reminds me of The Small Hours. 2) It kind of has a Fade To Black sound at 48 seconds in. 3) 5:20 the solo kind of reminds me a little bit of Met's version of Remember Tomorrow and I definitely hear some stuff that reminds me of One. I've got it on repeat and I'm liking it. Hetfield's definitely singing his heart out on this one.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 08/21/2008 09:18 PM EST

I think we're definitely dealing with a substandard recording meant to prevent piracy. Metallica would never release an album with substandard production... oh, wait.
That said, needs more cowbell. Now I need to go over to Blabbermouth and read about why I shouldn't like this song... nah, I'll skip that part and just listen to it for what must be the 50th time.

It takes me to another level. If there was any song that I could listen to 100 times in a row that would be it.” http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/sftw/article1590350.ece

Have not heard the song, and probably wont hear it until the album comes out. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like people have mixed feeling about this song. It is either too long, or the rythm is to long etc.

Posted by Bond @ 08/21/2008 10:21 PM EST

I love when he says "no the sunshine never comes" and it goes back into that main lick... i wish they repeated that more than once in the song...everytime i hear it I'm like damn!! LOOP!!

The chorus is really strong. Also, whoever pointed out that this has been recorded way too loudly has a rather good point. It's not as bad as the job Rubin did on Californication, but there's still plenty of clipping.

This song is great. I love these comments some people are making: "I love it but there should have been one more note in the second solo." or "The first time I heard it the ending was too long, then I listened again and it was too short, then again and the ending was too perfect." or "He should say HATE is a four letter word, 'cause it is." We are all so knotted up from waiting we're acting like Roger Ebert after watching the new Batman movie remixed together with Jason X. The only thing that bums me out about hearing this song is that I have to wait three more weeks to hear the rest. And I promise that the CD versions of these songs will not sound "too loud". That's hilarious: "This metal is TOO LOUD!"

"And I promise that the CD versions of these songs will not sound "too loud". That's hilarious: "This metal is TOO LOUD!" "

Hah, so you did completely miss the point, nice. I don't mean "wahh it's too heavy" or anything, it's just been produced in a way that means there's hardly any dynamics and it'll be headache inducing if the whole album's like that.

Also, what's wrong with analysing and discussing the song? I'm loving this new stuff- must've listened to Day that Never Comes and Cyanide 20+ times today- but it quickly gets boring going "OMG GUYS THEY ARE BACK YAYAYAY", as cool as that fact is.

Posted by caspian @ 08/22/2008 02:14 AM EST

Talking about sound quality, i'm pretty sure that they fucked some parts of the song up on purpose. Remember when they posted video of Cyanide on MOT and it sounded worse than fan's mobile phone recording ?

Listened to it in the car probably 10-12 times last night/this morning. Sounds better with each listen. I don't really get the "this should have been shorter/longer" whatever shit. And the mix did not seem "too loud"(and I understand what you are talking about there) to me, at least not in the car. There is too much good in this song for me to sit here picking away at minor little details.

yeah there's a few subtle touches in the mellow parts. I thought it was some synths, or perhaps an e-bow, myself.

Posted by caspian @ 08/22/2008 07:17 AM EST

Ok, if there is one thing that is clear, its this:

If there is one band that has set the bar royally high for not only other bands, but for themselves, its Metallica.

Their earlier albums were so good, they made it virtually impossible to top them.
Therefore, to alot of people, everything since has been a disapointment. Subjective of course, but I think the comparative analysis is the main issue.
Why do so many people feel the need to compare to previous albums or want it to sound like something in particular?
The other issue, for each person, is how high they set their expectations. If you go listening to the song wanting to hear something specific or whatever, you are more likely to be disappointed.
Anyway, just some babble.

Side note: When do we see the video for the single?

21 days and counting, friends! The Wait...

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 08/22/2008 09:43 AM EST

DJ, no, actually about a 20 minute commute. But I had to run a bunch of errands after work last night(getting the kids a cat in the hat and pokemon dvd) and got stuck in road construction traffic. That marked the first time I WAS NOT having a fit of road rage due to endless road construction, as I was happy as a clam repeating the song. And to boot, my 5 and 8 years olds were humming the chorus on our way into the house. Made me a proud papa, let me tell ya.

Posted by kurt @ 08/22/2008 10:05 AM EST

Manguy, you nailed it brother. I never expect the next release to compare to, or be better than, the last(or best) release of any band. The only thing that matters to me is if I like the new songs or not. Ozzy has never topped blizzar/diary. So what, I love a shitload of songs on his releases after those two. Same with countless other bands.

Posted by kurt @ 08/22/2008 10:09 AM EST

i agree with kurt 100%. i cant believe the ammount of complaining on the metboards. yes i noticed the loud mix but to us old guys who grew up listening to the shittiest warped tape cassettes on shitty boomboxes and walkmans its so friggin retarded how ppl r nitpicking. DAMN KIDS ARE SPOILED NOWADAYS.

Posted by sean @ 08/22/2008 10:58 AM EST

So, it's been nearly 24 hours to let this song soak in... and I've listened to it just about 40 times now. Clearly, I had certain expectations... sorry, I can't turn that off, no matter how hard I try not to let something build to a certain level of excitement, it happens... it's human nature.

Anyway, the song has lived up to the hype. Just not the hype I expected it to live up to. Not quite what I expected... and it's something that grows on you.

Some random thoughts. Sure seems like the guys that have been listening to lots of Maiden... and I still hear Blue Oyster Cult on the clean chordy riff. The album is gonna suffer without vocal harmonies. The riff at 5:02 sounds like a Stanger leftover and shouldve been deleted. I love the riff at 5:43, sounds so unlike Metallica.... I love it. The more I hear other folks' reaction, it helps shape my own... yeah, there's a lot of Unforgiven II in here... especially the vocal approach. The clean guitar at the front of the song (the All Within My Hands acoustic bit) sounds amazing... what a great sound. They seem to have dialed in that click that bass drum had on Justice, just not as prominent... in fact, it could just be the compression of the mp3, but overall there seems to be a lack of presence on the drum kit... other than Lars' snare... (not enough bass?). I too, noticed the synth /ebow /volume pedal effect. I wonder how much of the "lead" or "harmony" guitar is James... remember James played everything but the solos prior to Load.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/22/2008 11:03 AM EST

i really believe if stairway to heaven or (insert classic here) was released today..everyone would be whining and complaining. i also know that all these ppl complaining who started out on s&m or reload at 10 yrs old , if they were alive in 86 they would be listening to air supply.

Posted by SEAN @ 08/22/2008 11:03 AM EST

lol i could tell you werent feeling this one JD. im not complaining about anyone on here..just metboards.

Posted by sean @ 08/22/2008 11:05 AM EST

It's not that I wasn't feeling it... I just needed time with it. It's just not what I expected... or even wanted, I guess. That's the problem with expecations, things hardly live up to them... I'm digging the tune.

I think it's been that way with every Metallica hyped release... I remember waiting for like an 11 eastern broadcast of Until It Sleeps... the debut from Load. And my reaction was "THE CHRIS ISAAK RIFF???" (from Fan Can 1)...

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/22/2008 11:13 AM EST

there's a definite hint of Don't Fear the Reaper early on in the tune. Also, I quite like that "stanger" riff, JD. I'd personally re-arrange the groovy, orion-ish before that, or to be more precise, the vocals. they're pretty awkward. THISS I SWEAR THIS I SWEAR etc

Posted by caspian @ 08/22/2008 11:36 AM EST

Only the last "this I swear" felt odd to me. I like that I can head come load-ish type stuff in the early and middle sections, along with maybe a touch of st.anger-ish type stuff, along with much of the old stuff you can hear in beggining and end. It all flowed well, IMO. If you had asked me before if they could somehow make the styles fit together, I would never have thought so, but they did. To me the song is majority old school, with a little sprinkling of the other stuff.

Posted by kurt @ 08/22/2008 11:58 AM EST

Sean, could you imagine how they would deal with scratchy sounding vinyl. I had KEA, RTL, MOP on vinyl. Justice was my first cassette.

Posted by kurt @ 08/22/2008 12:00 PM EST

If Seek & Destroy were released today people would hammer it -

"It's too repetitive"

"The words are silly (scanning the scene in the city tonight? wtfux!)

Posted by kdonato @ 08/22/2008 12:06 PM EST

lol, its so awesome we sit hear along with people all across the world and breakdown all these things without realizing how much we all suck so much at life. Just stop for a moment and focus on how not relevant your life is to anything and then realize that James & Lars write one song, the whole United States shuts down @ 2pm (eastern), every radio rock radio station stops their format so they can play it & millions listen to either bash or love it. Thats awesome power

Posted by marcus @ 08/22/2008 12:39 PM EST

to me it sounds like lars is slowly unlearning how to play drums. it's pretty obvious that he's struggling with the double kick drums on both songs...

i love that James brought back the harmonies, and that Kirk isn't hiding behind a wah wah. at least on this one.

Posted by die on your feet @ 08/22/2008 01:09 PM EST

Aside from the clipping issue, whether you hear it or not it's there (I can hear it), the song is killer. I hope it's only the single that is affected.

Posted by DuManchu @ 08/22/2008 01:16 PM EST

After listening to this song a lot of times,i'm still a bit confused. In some parts its harmonies remind me of To live Is to Die.The riff at 5:43 reminds me of Am I Evil and the riff behind the solo at 6:41v is Motorbreath!.It's a good song but why did it had to be that long?It sure has weak points

Posted by Jesius @ 08/22/2008 01:17 PM EST

well with another 15 listens, it gets better with each listen. At first I thought a few of the solo riffs were too cut-and-paste, and it felt like some of the riffs were just thrown in there my that clown engineer. But its sinking in more and more, and it's still Metallica, just Version 2008. I know that a lot of us on here have the bar set so high, that we can't help but compare it to previous material/songs/trax/riffs. I agree that it's pretty annoying/childish to hear all the whining and complaining/bashing and how it sounds like this or that song. Gotta just take it for what it is. Sure parts could be better or louder or lower, but like SEAN(nice caps) said, you could take any legendary song and people would pick it apart like vultures. I bet TDTNC will sound a lot better in a live, if/when it makes it to the setlist.

Posted by The General @ 08/22/2008 01:36 PM EST

i made an edit of this song if anyone is interested hahah, i like the second half, but it didn't make the cut... its got 3 verses, and 3 "no the sunshine never comes", then switches to the Love is a four letter word riff, but not much else..

it's awesome..i can hear that sunshine part over and over

I guess i'm still a diehard metallica fan, as long as i can edit their songs..

I'm thinking about doing the whole st.anger album too

hahah

Early album review posted yesterday... Don't get your hopes up, this guy doesn't go into ANY detail... Not sure why he bothered reviewing. I probably shouldn't even post the link, but you guys *might* enjoy it anyway... http://www.ibabuzz.com/insertfoot/2008/08/21/early-metallica-cd-review/

Posted by D-J @ 08/22/2008 02:00 PM EST

For all guitar players here is a great Guitar Pro Tab (*note that there is just one mistake, just after the second chorus, on chord is missing) but overall great tab: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/metallica/the_day_that_never_comes_guitar_pro.htm

I find clean (verse) part the hardest to play, probably because played too much of Unforgive 2. Harmony part is very close to "One". But after all I love playing this new song on guitar, it's got some kind of energy in its riffs, especially 04:06 part, i LOVE it.

Posted by $trangeR @ 08/22/2008 02:28 PM EST

I know the difference between "too loud" and "too heavy". I didn't mean they might mellow it out and release some flaccid version on the finished product. The versions I've heard (including the one from iTunes) sounds like it been compressed to below 128 kbps. I have to turn it up to nearly 50 in my car (instead of the normal 35-40) and the clipping is there. Maybe that's the way it will sound on the CD (I hope not, we put up with enough strange production with St. Anger). It's a great song though and more memorable than anything I've heard in a while. I've listened to the new Testament quite a few times now and it's good, but I couldn't hum and tune from it if my life depended on it.

Posted by Seth @ 08/22/2008 03:04 PM EST

Umm, this may not be news to all of you, but it is to me. They are going to have an instrumental song on this album! Awesome!

Quote from the above article.
"Some of the songs sound like they came from jams, including the instrumental “Suicide & Redemption,” which built slowly into layers of blistering Hammett."

Posted by Rich @ 08/22/2008 03:09 PM EST

well maybe we can all agree on something.. i dont know how the video director saw a war theme for the song..the lyrics arent that ambiguous in my opinion. seems more like the soundtrack to "enough" with jlo than predator. GET TO DA CHOPPA

Posted by sean @ 08/22/2008 03:31 PM EST

Last night, I saw that interview that D-J posted earlier today and I'm not too worried about the album. That guy reviewing it only heard it one time. How much can you remember after hearing almost 80 minutes of music?

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 08/22/2008 03:35 PM EST

I don't get the war theme at all. If James is not singing about domestic violence, then he did the best job I've ever seen of veiling his intent. Maybe they didn't want something so direct since the "turn the page" video, while about prostitution, showed her getting beat up too.

Posted by kurt @ 08/22/2008 03:36 PM EST

Want to know either how old and/or out of touch technologically I am? I have no idea what the fuck you guys are talking about with all this 128 kbps.... stuff. I just don't get what it all is. And to be honest, I don't care too much. I play it as loud as my car stereo can handle regardless.

Posted by kurt @ 08/22/2008 03:39 PM EST

Kurt, I'm very much in the same boat, lol. Totally clueless when it comes to the tech stuff that people are talking about here.

And I agree about the lyrics being pretty clearly about domestic abuse.

The song's getting better with every listen.

Oh and I think I've decided to avoid the Metallica.com boards until after the album comes out. Maybe even until the tour starts.

There's only so much I can take.

Posted by Trace @ 08/22/2008 03:56 PM EST

All I can say guys, is, listen to TDTNC when you get DM, then listen to the 320k version you likely are listening to now. You WILL hear the difference. Some say its a big deal, others say its subtle, but either way, there is a difference. I think that whoever ripped TDTNC just ripped it wrong. A buddy of mine rips songs with some app (I forget what he uses off the top of my head) and sometimes the recording gets staticy/muffly. Are those even words? Oh well. You'll see what everyone's bitching about. Last week, I downloaded STP's album Thank You, and I noticed the same thing on that album too. It was encoded to 320kbps mp3 too...

Anybody seen today's free FOTW?.. Het playing riffs and the harmony for The Day That Never Comes on Kirk's Mummy guitar.

TDTNC just made its live debut at the Leeds.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/22/2008 06:08 PM EST

I can't believe what am reading on the Metallica.com board from Metallica fans ! most of them are bitching about every tiny detail , 1st they started bashing Cyanide which is a New song that been captured with mobile phone quality ! Now they are acting like music producers with 30 year of experience !!

" riffs don't make sense "
" James should not sing like this " " Lars is out of creativity on this one "
" song too long " ,etc ...

Its nice to have a mature discussions about a song or the album and i like whats am reading here. But whats happening on the Metallica board is really a negative thing , its either "NEW METALLICA ALBUM KICKS ASSS" ,or "I DON'T LIKE THIS...MAKE MOP II" !

i will stay away from that nasty place, cause its gona make me dislike the album before it come out .

Posted by Laziale @ 08/22/2008 06:59 PM EST

you know, im not some fanboy who loves everything metallica puts out blindly, in fact i can name some pretty well below average metallica songs. but everyone keeps saying this is the return of metallica..i dont think they were ever gone were they? i thought the LOAD albums were great, fuckin garage inc was killer. sure st anger was a little below par, but with the proper production it could have been a lot better. this song and album is going to continue this trend im sure, cause what ive heard so far is very solid. For one I am glad they didnt keep releasing MOP or AJFA cause I might be tired of it by now, who knows..? Im just thankful there is a band this consistantly good thats out there, cause fuck knows theres not a lot of them. Just my 2 cents..

proper production...and solos of course

Is TDTNC getting decent air play where you guys are? I've only heard it on the radio once, so far. Man this song fucking rocks so hard. Hearing it on the radio is just amazing, knowing all the fellow Metalli-heads rocking out to it, and thinking of all the others that heard it that aren't really aware of Metallica's music - hearing this song, then after its finished, saying, "What the FUCK was that?!" I'm soooo glad they just released as is and didn't do a radio edit. A masterpiece such as this demands every single note is played.

Posted by D-J @ 08/22/2008 11:06 PM EST

yup metallica played tdtnc live! yes alot of radio play here. i cant believe the summer is almost over already.

Posted by sean @ 08/22/2008 11:25 PM EST

To me.. it reminds me of fade to black a little. Not the lyrics, but the structure of the song. I love the song, and, sorry to say, am very happy that it sounds nothing like St. Anger. I am a huge fan of the band, even love the Load albums, but St. Anger was not my cup of tea. TDTNC is the first song since Bleeding me that made hair on my arms stand. Great song, cant wait till Sept 12th.

Posted by Robert @ 08/22/2008 11:25 PM EST

2 me its not a "missing link" between any albums..it sounds like the album after reload and st anger. or 99-02ish.

the song is like a mullet.business in the front..party in the back.

Love is a four LETTER word...am I the only one who shed a real man tear during this song? I get pretty emotional when this song is playing, especially during the first 4 mins. It's a very deep and powerful song, evokes a lot of feelings inside. It's an emotional rollercoaster. I apologize if this post comes across as too sappy, just curious if I'm alone on this or not. I truly love and respect Metallica even more for writing and creating The Day That Never Comes. I love life and it feels fuckin' fantastic to be ALIVE! Every day is a great day to be alive and well. Especially Sept. 12th. I love and respect all the Metallica brothers and sisters of the world! Bring on the rest of the masterpiece, otherwise known as DEATH MAGNETIC! Sept. 12th can't come soon enough!

Hate and anger are no longer in control, LOVE now guides me and shines a bright light through all of life's dark corners and trappings. Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts. Peace.

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 08/22/2008 11:53 PM EST

I'm still sure it's "mouth so full of lies... tend to block your eyes" it makes sense from an abuse standpoint of wanting to believe someone's repentant words and not their unchanging actions.

I mean c'mon... tender black: your eyes??? Who is this song about? Bambi?

There's man in the forest...

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 08/23/2008 12:01 AM EST

I got a little misty-eyed when I heard the song. I said it earlier and I'll say it again, James is really singing his heart out on TDTNC. I read the latest issue of Revolver with the boys on the cover and James had some feelings about the band being over, which inspired the material on the album.

The message board is down on Met's site. Another thing, IS-JD, THANKS again for keeping this site going. It's such a cool thing to come over here and talk to some cool people on here!

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 08/23/2008 12:03 AM EST

I hear the lyrics both ways.. but mostly I hear the bit about black eyes. If the guy's punching flesh, he'd be blackening eyes too, no?

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/23/2008 02:52 AM EST

Gotta say i'm a little dissapointed, there's parts of the song that are really good and some parts i find to be out of place.

Towards the end of the song as the tempo gets faster it just sounds as though lars' drumming gets left behind.
Sounds good as backround music, will have to give it listen a bit more but so far i can't say this is one of my favs.

That live version... holy fucking shit... I REALLY think this song is an instant masterpiece and I think this will become apparent as time goes on. Its DEFINITELY on the level of One, Fade To Black, etc. To answer some of the other guys, yes, I get a little man tear going on when all hell breaks loose on this song, starting at around 5:02 (in the album version). It gives me a HUGE fucking frog in my throat, that much is for sure.

GREAT NEWS! The quality of TDTNC mp3 was addressed by a member of the Mission Metallica team, so thankfully, we WILL eventually get a perfect quality version of the song. This was an email sent out to some members of Mission Metallica.

Metallica Fans,

My name is Benjamin. I work in fan support for Mission:Metallica.

I am sorry for the bulk e-mail, but we've heard from quite a few of you regarding the sound quality on the single release of "The Day That Never Comes."

The source of the problem, as you might imagine, goes all the way back to the creation of the track from master - but this is not how it will sound on the album.

We've identified the source of the problem to prevent it in any subsequent singles released in advance of September 12.

If we can have another one put together and sent out prior to that date, there may be a higher-quality release of "The Day That Never Comes" made available, but I can't guarantee it at this time.

Thank you,

Benjamin

I know I haven't heard the rest of the album, but I wouldn't be surprised if TDTNC becomes a concert staple... Damn its epic...

Posted by D-J @ 08/23/2008 08:32 AM EST

yeah, I love the new song. It reminds me of "To Live is to Die", "Fixxxer" and old Ride The Lightning stuff. This is the album that, to me, feels like it should have followed the Black album.

you know though... Load has really grown on me over the years. Something so natural and organic to that sound, even if at the time it was so unusual for a Metallica album.

Posted by Tipper @ 08/23/2008 09:34 AM EST

Well, they addressed the quality issue that had so many panties in a bunch. Didn't bother me at all. They nailed the live version pretty spot on. Funny, they didn't seem to nail the st. anger tunes as well. Gotta go, leaving for vacation. Damn, right in the middle of all this good stuff.

song is strong, they definitely put their hearts out while recording this album...not old metallica, but new metallica...

Well after a few more listens I must say that the only weak point of the song is the last 20-10 seconds. The live version definetely changed my opinion. The video is on metontour also.
Hint:Try sychronise the video from youtube and Metonour and you will have a more solid sound since the fan version's got more treble sound and the metotour more bass.I did it and it sounds great

damn, the live verison of The Day that Never Comes is taken to a whole new level. Far and away the best live band.

Posted by Tony @ 08/24/2008 08:34 AM EST

O.k. so I've listened to this song a bunch of times now and I absolutely love it! Amazing! The first time I heard TDTNC, I have to be honest, I thought the intro was amazing and then the rest seemed "meh" to me. Then the song gew on me. You can never judge a song by a first or even a second listen because you always go into the first listen with your own personal expectations of how the song will sound and how it will be structured etc. When those expectations aren't met, you feel let down. Honestly, for me, it's impossible to go into a first listen with an open mind. There are always expectations and thoughts of how something will sound. So all in all, my review....simply amazing! I hear Unforgiven II, Astronomy, To Live Is To Die, One, Fade to Black, and Mercyful Fate bunched into one all while sounding refreshing and new. Sounds a little Load to me too. Good stuff! And the production..wow!! Someone brought up a great post in that the vocals were not harmonized. I love that they are not. Probably one of the main reasons why the live version sounds so great. Because it sounds almost identical to the recorded. I mean Nickelback absolutely sucks ass in my opinion and the lead singers voice sounds overlapped 10 times or more. James' voice in TDTNC sounds great!

Posted by Dave @ 08/24/2008 08:54 AM EST

Oh yeah, by the way...Unforgiven III taste of death today!! Can't wait!

Posted by Dave @ 08/24/2008 08:56 AM EST

Well, in a few short day TDTNC has leaped to second in my iTunes playlist (which adds up plays from iTunes itself along with the iPod and iPhone)... 78 times... compared to Metallica's version of Ecstasy which is #1 with 89 times... Cyanide is 6th with 71 plays.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/24/2008 10:54 AM EST

The guitar sound on the Chug Chug Chug part towards the end is amazing on the live version. Both guitars and bass just thumping that riff... can't wait to see it in person.

Posted by Azrael @ 08/24/2008 11:13 AM EST

it's an incredible song! brought tears to my eyes too. you can actually hears bits of Metallica from almost every album thrown into a blender with a refreshing new twist of lime! killer song!

Posted by TheDickThatNeverCums @ 08/24/2008 11:47 AM EST

vocals are the real deal...no over dubbed harmonies...sounds really good live too. i hear a bit of stanger in the song on some of the guitar parts near the end and thats cool cause it's apart of their history and shouldn't be ignored or forgotten. it's a defining song and a DM will be defining album for Metallica.

Posted by TheDickThatNeverCums @ 08/24/2008 11:59 AM EST

That part of the Unforgiven III is haunting and gives me the chills. Sounds like The Outlaw Torn's evil twin brother...

I'm loving the volume pedal effect on todays latest taste of death. I think I can hear the original Unforgiven in there. These little appetizers (as much as I'm appreciating them) are not making the wait any easier. "Death Magnetic" is going to be by far, one of the best albums of all time! Time will confirm my opinion. Sept. 12th will mark as one of musics greatest days of all time! Anticipation OVERLOAD!!!

I agree, I hear all of Metallica's albums including St. Anger and Garage Inc. with a twist of something new in TDTNC. Truly an EPIC and DEFINING song for Metallica.

I gotta give credit where it's due. Rick Rubin sure knows how to keep the sound of song/album real. Keeping it real, that's what I've always loved about Rick Rubin's work with other bands/musicians. I'm hoping Metallica and Rick Rubin partner up for a bunch more albums. Their a match made in...

METALLICA FAN FOR LIFE.

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 08/25/2008 12:18 AM EST

So, what are you trying to say there, OMCTD? That you're a Metallica fan for life...??? Fuck, I don't think I've seen so many posts appear on here in such a short amount of time. How am I ever supposed to get any work done when I'm trying to read all this shit...???

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 08/25/2008 02:01 AM EST

I'm gonna have to agree with some of the people on this forum. My first listen to TDTNM was that I liked it but I wasn't everly impressed with it. I'm sure it has to do with way we hype ourselves up for our favorite band that they can't realistically every live up to it.

But now after a dozen or so listens... I've grown to love this song. It has reached the point where it can give me goose bumps just as well as the song One does. I love this song now!

Come on Sept. 12!!!!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 08/25/2008 11:54 AM EST

yeah they put some work into this that's for sure.....

The latest issue of UK's Kerrang! magazine (web site) includes an interview with Metallica and report on the band's July 27, 2008 concert in Istanbul, Turkey. A couple of excerpts from the interview portion of the article follow.

On staying relevant more than 25 years after the band's formation:

James Hetfield (guitar, vocals): Despite the earthquake that is going on in the record industry, this band is still relevant. We worked through our problems and now we've gone to work capturing our musical essence. We've challenged ourselves; we're hungry.

We understand the importance of staying relevant. We understand the importance of playing new songs. We understand how important it is not to become a nostalgia act. No one in the band wants us to be that. [Metallica] still has something to offer. No matter what the public thinks, as a band we will do what we have to do. We always have.

On Metallica's new album, "Death Magnetic":

Lars Ulrich (drums): I can honestly say that this album is the best album we could possibly have made. Can I guarantee that people will like it as much as they like our older albums? No, I can't; I can't offer any guarantees. But I promise you that we could not have made a better album.

Kirk Hammett (guitar): This album is some of the best music we've made in the past 15 years. A lot of the albums we made post-'Black' album were us trying to get away from a perceived Metallica sound. That was the right thing for us at the time, but we don't feel we haveto do that anymore. And to be truthful, it's fun to play fast, to be heavy. We're now all on the same page with regards to that. I'd even go so far as to say that we even missed playing that way.

James Hetfield: This album has a hunger and a youthfulness about it. We had a new producer, a new bass player… and we worked really hard to get it right. So when you ask me if it is good, if it's really good, I can honestly say, 'Yes, it is!'

Kirk Hammett: I think we're all aware of the danger of becoming a band that exists in the past. I think any band that's been around as long as we have has to face that. But ['Death Magnetic'] is going to prove to people that we never lost our ability to make an album like this. We just chose not to. And I'll stand by those words.

Cool post, Nick. Today's taste is pretty cool. Kind of has a march feel to it and reminds me Harvester. http://metallica.com/index.asp?item=601104

I FUCKING AGREE 100% with Kirk's last statement. In fact, I've been thinking this for a while: when people hear how awesome Death Magnetic is, this will PROVE that Metallica never lost the ability to make heavy/fast albums - they simply just not to, and now, they chose to.

JD- maybe you should give each post 2 comment sections, one like normal, and one for OMCD, and then we can see which comment section grows fastest.

I jest and imply no ill will. ;)

It sucks that the Coffin Box is $129USD. I wish they would release the album/demo/dvd for like $30-$40 bucks. I don't care about any of the other junk in the box. I guess I will just be buying the Album.

I'll admit, it's not easy being Metallica's #1 fan!

I love my life, I wouldn't have it any other way.

You are weird.

Posted by Nick @ 08/25/2008 07:08 PM EST

We're all a bit wierd, Nick. Since when have metal-heads ever really fit into what society classes as the "norm"? OMCTD is just a little... unique.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 08/25/2008 07:32 PM EST

Has anyone got there hands on this "NEW" mp3 of TDTNC from Mission : Metallica. seems like they have been having issues all day.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 08/25/2008 08:12 PM EST

Also, with this new 'Mastered' version, do you think James' voice will sound any different. Seems to me like he singing in a room where sound doesnt carry, seems flat to me, like there no reverb or something.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 08/25/2008 08:15 PM EST

I want this chic! I don't care what she looks like! But if it's a skinny ass dude, forget what I said.....

Those looking for the new version of TDTNC need to go back to August 21 and download the file again. They simply posted the new file to the old download link. In iTunes you can see the file was modified on 8/25/2008 around 2:00PM and the version is different than the original version. I hope that helps!

Posted by Garrett @ 08/25/2008 09:28 PM EST

Garret... i tried downloading the file again and it was the same one that i had the day it was released.

In the statement that was released they said no version thats out there is better...so this is leaving me quite confused.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 08/25/2008 09:42 PM EST

Sounds the same to me...but then again I didnt have any issues with it in the first place, probably cause its through $40 computer speakers..

Posted by Mark @ 08/25/2008 10:03 PM EST

there are issues with both versions, and its really noticeable, i mean im a musician and im not picky when listening to mp3's but the compression on TTDNC is really awful, the song is distorted, raise the volume and u'll notice, the second version is a little clearer, but still on the heavy parts its distorted, now as long as the album version does not clip like crazy i dont really care

Posted by xino @ 08/25/2008 10:52 PM EST

Feelin' the love bros, right back at you.

Are you all enjoying the wait...for the album of the year...scratch that...album of all time!

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 08/25/2008 10:55 PM EST

obviously this is gonna sound pro, there won't be any clipping on the album, i mean think about it

Posted by Tony @ 08/25/2008 11:00 PM EST

I think Lars just enjoys the raw sound these days. Very European...whatever I'll get over it.

Posted by marcus @ 08/25/2008 11:09 PM EST

Dave, thanks for the link. Whoever was playing it on piano really translated the music well and captured the feel of the song.

Holy fucking shit that song is pretty damn rockin.
Please tell me the quality will be pretty different then these songs, cause if so these will fucking kick some serious ass.

It sounds like james is singing in the worst room.... he has no acoustics what so ever.... please tell me thats just this shit quality

but my god they got some riffs in this song.

Posted by Pupppetz @ 08/26/2008 01:32 AM EST

So we now know where the name of the album came from, and we also know that not every DM song will be at least six minutes long, lol.

On first listen, it sounds like something that would be killer live. Also, sounds like a great way to end the album, which it will.

Posted by Trace @ 08/26/2008 01:35 AM EST

holy fucking shit. Thats 3 for 3 in my scorecard for rubin and the tallica boys. thanks for the link, dan.

Posted by ole @ 08/26/2008 01:45 AM EST

Fuck it... I can't listen to it... streaming is disabled on my work computer!!! I'll have to wait til I get home... fuck it!!!!

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 08/26/2008 01:49 AM EST

there is NOTHING wrong with My Apocalypse. Nothing at all. This is so good. And I'm only halfway through listening to it.

Posted by The General @ 08/26/2008 01:53 AM EST

Cyanide and The Day That Never Comes are both awesome but THIS should be the single. Just one man's opinion. Hurry the hell up Sept. 12th!

Posted by ole @ 08/26/2008 01:56 AM EST

My Apocalypse kicks ass!!! Why aren't the vocals louder tho?

Posted by Nick @ 08/26/2008 02:00 AM EST

Nick, hey bro, I don't know whats up with all the sound quality complaints. I don't have anything special as far as things go on my desktop and I'm greating great sound out of my factory computer speakers. I found that using my headphones help me dissect the sound. I'm on my fifth listen now, and it gets better every time. I'm using windows media player.

Posted by ole @ 08/26/2008 02:06 AM EST

The song kicks ass, but the vocals seem real low to me compared to the music. Song still kicks ass tho... those stupid little f***s over at blabbermouth just got another foot in the mouth.

Posted by Nick @ 08/26/2008 02:18 AM EST

blabbermouth is usually full of crap. The faithful and the loyal get the news here.

Posted by ole @ 08/26/2008 02:23 AM EST

My Apocalypse - The rawness of "Kill em All", Machine gun Riffage from "MOP - Battery", some more familiar sounding riffage from "AJFA - "Harvester/Dyers" and lyrically I would go the same - "MOP/AJFA"

Posted by Nick @ 08/26/2008 02:31 AM EST

So I purchased the itunes version and you can hear everything much better, wtf?

Posted by Nick @ 08/26/2008 02:42 AM EST

Sorry about ALL my posts, but this one is important. itunes says it will b receiving 2 more NEW SONGS!!! Sept. 2nd and Sept. 9th!!!!!

Metal Militia,Damage Inc. & Dyers Eve is back!!!!!.. im desperately wanna hear the instrumental suicide & redemption. I hope no one commit suicide because of the song. :)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!! That is the best fucking early - Metallica thrash song I've heard since Justice. FUCK YEAH, FUCK YEAH, FUCK YEAH, FUCK YEAH, FUCK YEAH, FUCK YEAH, FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring on the 12th of Sep!!!!!

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 08/26/2008 04:28 AM EST

I really really love the day that never comes. I can't get enough of it. It seriously is the best song i've heard in years.

Posted by Morr1e @ 08/26/2008 07:09 AM EST

It's a pretty excellent song, this new one. The snare's super loud but I'm pretty sure that's just the leaked version. This should've been the single, yeah. Bring on sept.12!

Posted by caspian @ 08/26/2008 07:28 AM EST

wow... I just heard the full version of My Apocalypse... boy is it different. It sounds like a sped-up version of a St Anger song... I know the internet quality is crap, but the drums sounded like they ping-and-pong'd like on St Anger... uhhhh

Posted by Tipper @ 08/26/2008 07:29 AM EST

I don't know... Cyanide was good, Day That Never Comes was really good, but My Apocalypse sounds a little "happy" for me. It just sounds cheesy to my ears. I love the other two songs though.

Posted by Tipper @ 08/26/2008 07:31 AM EST

Happy? wtf? Listen to the bridge a few more times, man.. it's actually, well... thrashy! And genuinely so! Also, the snare isn't remotely pong-y. This song is exactly what I was hoping for from this new album.

GUYS I THINK I JUST CREAMED MY PANTS

Posted by caspian @ 08/26/2008 08:00 AM EST

Actually, that's been an observation of mine almost from the start... the riffs sound "happy" to me, too. Almost all of the Taste of Death bits sounds "happy" to these ears... the notable exception is UIII.

My Apocalypse doesn't seem to be the slap-the-riffs together that TDTNC and Cyanide sound like to me...

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/26/2008 08:23 AM EST

Yeah, it's a good deal more coherent then the other two.

I can see why you'd think the main riff is happy, seems like it's based on a major scale, or some sort of major interval action. Overall, though, the mood of the song isn't terribly happy. (And again, the bridge! that is certainly not happy).

Posted by caspian @ 08/26/2008 08:55 AM EST

Did you guys not notice that there was a message under the song link on metallica.com

"Keep coming back Monday nights before September 12 for a full taste!"

I think we are getting a full song every week until the album comes out!!!

Posted by manguy @ 08/26/2008 09:17 AM EST

seems like it. Should be awesome?

Posted by caspian @ 08/26/2008 09:31 AM EST

My Apocalypse still seems liike a good album closer... ala Struggle or Damage Inc.

Posted by IS-JD @ 08/26/2008 10:10 AM EST

I went to bed early last night and then I come here to see what's going on and there's a firestorm of news about My Apocalypse. First time, wasn't too crazy about it-again, a lot of stuff going on that's hard to digest on 1st listen. 2nd listen, liking it more & more. I'm still listening to it and think it's cool. I love the divebomb @ the 'spit it out' part and the guitars sound a little off or wobbly around that part, which makes it cool (2.44). The only part that pisses me off is that last night I told myself I wasn't going to listen to anymore new songs. I guess that went out the window. I might try to skip the rest, however. I want the rest to remain a surprise for Sep. 12th.

tenative lyrics to My Apocalypse:

Claustrophobic, crawl out of this skin
High explosive, reach and pull that pin
Fear thy name, extermination
Desecrating hail of fire

So we cross that line
Into the crypt, total eclipse
Suffer unto my apocalypse

Deadly vision, prophecy reveal
Death magnetic, pulling closer still
Fear thy name, annihilation
Desolating hail of fire

So we cross that line
Into the crypt, total eclipse
Suffer unto my apocalypse
My apocalypse

Crushing metal ripping skin
Tossing body manequins
Spilling blood bleeding gas

Mangled flesh snapping spines
Dripping bloody valentine
Shattered face spitting glass

Split apart
Split apart
Split apart
Split
Spit it out

What makes me drift a little bit closer
Dead man takes the steering wheel
What makes me know what time to cross over
Want to repeat until i feel

See thru the skin the bones they are rattled
Future and past that disagree
Flesh falls away the bones they all shatter
Pass time to see the end in me
See the end in me

Claustrophobic, climb out of this skin
High explosive, reach and pull that pin

Violate, annihilate
Lose into my eyes
Obliterate, exterminate
If not accept, deny

Fear thy name as hell awakens
Destiny in hail of fire

So we cross that line
Into the crypt, total eclipse
Suffer unto my apocalypse

Tyrants awake in my apocalypse
Demon awake in my apocalypse
Heaven awake in my apocalypse
Suffer forever my apocalypse

Posted by The General @ 08/26/2008 11:16 AM EST

Yeah... reading those lyrics, I definitely can't see where people are getting the idea that this is a "happy" little ditty. Can't see The Wiggles singing it for the kiddies...

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 08/26/2008 07:11 PM EST

Not that anyone will read this comment as I'm sure we've all moved onto the newest thread...

... but, it's the music that sounds happy. You'd have to be a retard if you thought the lyrics were happy.
