08/09/2008 Entry: "UPDATES"
update: Metallica played it's first song from Death Magentic live in Dallas at Ozzfest: Cyanide.
Death Magnetic gets a worldwide release on September 12th... although some reports show a Japanese release of September 10th.
Rumors say the Death Magnetic tour starts in the US on October 20th. James stated on Sirius Radio's Hard Attack that the tour will consist of two openers, one will rotate and the other will be The Sword.... James also professed to be an avid listener of the station, citing it to be an inspiration; Papa Het also promised the new song and video for The Day that Never Comes will drop before the album... and hinted that an ESP Guitar Hero controller might be in the works... he also confirms in the latest SO WHAT! magazine that an instrumental will be on Death Magnetic.
MetOnTour promises two surprises at tonight's Ozzfest show... they also reported that Lars made an appearance with Scott Ian, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Pearl Aday (Scott's girlfriend and Meatloaf's daughter) at the Dimebag Darrell tribute playing a cover of 'Wish You Were Here.'

Not at all happy with the idea of them having two opening acts. They're were supposed to have done a song with King Diamond, which I'm guessing is the second "surprise."

I am anxious to hear this or even hear from someone that was at the show.

Gotta say, I've never been so happy to be wrong. They played Cyanide, which is the "Suicide, I've already died" song, and is the riff that we heard on the first MM trailer. The song has a lot of time changes, and brutal riffs that I'm not entirely sure go together. I need to hear this several times before I'm sure if I like it. I live like 3 miles from the stadium and just got back, so expect people who live a little farther out to be getting home and posting the thing within the next hour so everyone can hear.

The King Diamond performance was fairly interesting, although it was pretty late, just after midnight when they started, so I'm not sure people were entirely in the right frame of mind to get a 12 minute cover tune sung by a singer who can be hard to listen to if you aren't used to Merciful Fate. The highlight of the night for me was the flawless performance of Damage Inc, which is the one song I've never seen them do live in 20 years of going faithfully every time they come to town (actually missed it by one day at the forum in 2004, but was at the first show they played dyer's, so it wasn't too much of a letdown.) I was so completely blown away by how well they performed Damage, and I'm looking forward to the tour later in the year, they're tighter than we've seen in... well, maybe tighter than any time since AJFA. It's late and I'm babbling, so I'll sit tight and wait for someone to post Cyanide. Then there will be much bitching, because no matter whether you like it or not, I can pretty much guarantee it isn't what you were expecting.

Nice! Though with the quality and sound of the video, it's kind of hard to make out some of the guitar and vocals. Drums are louder and drowning the guitar sound out. The song does groove, and the brief dueling guitar part sounds really cool to me. Can't wait to hear the album version.

So Cyanide is the Death Magnetic song, you can hear James saying "Death Magnetic" just before the "Suicide I've already died" part.

I just got back from the concert and wow....I've never heard the band sound more in tune and focused.
I was at the meet and greet and Lars confirmed that within the next week or so "shit will start to hit the fan". Take it for what it's worth (ya know Lars) but still the Death Magnetic ball is a rolling!

I was just about to post that one.
It's pretty cool; sounds maybe a little bit unfocused, but this is a snippet of a song I've never heard before, I think it will grow on me quite a bit.

I definitely think this song kicks ass. The *only* concern I have is what a few people have mentioned - that some of the riffs don't go together. I am not sold on that theory - I am just guarded until I hear the studio version. I am guarded because that is EXACTLY what I didn't like about The New Song and the Other New Song (Vulturous and Death Is Not The End). Those two songs had some great bits in it, but sounded like they should have really been 4 or 5 songs instead of 2 because certain pieces just didn't go together. That said, if Cyanide has any issues, ANY issues at all, that would be the only one. But again, I don't think its ANYWHERE as disjointed at Vulturous and Death Is Not The End. I am hoping when they first played those two songs for Rubin, he walked up and slapped each one of them in turn and said "No!". So hopefully we won't get any of that on the record. Cyanide sounds awesome to me! I bet that slower melodic part will sound great from the studio version!

How f-ing cool would it be if they post the entire song (high quality version) of this performance on MM today!! Maybe even a download of the live ozzfest performance!! On the riff changes throughout the song, I see what you guys are talking about. But damn this song is so damn catchy! The bit where you here just rob and lars...man it sounds like a march!

Also...I don't think they are playing Cyanide in standard tuning. They probably just prefer to play it this way live, I dunno. Please correct me if I am wrong though, experienced guitar players.

Listened to it a few times and sounds pretty cool. Hard to make a call because of the quality, but it does groove. I remember hearing the concrete face and concrete angel. Hope to hear some better quality stuff that might show up on Metontour. Lars definitely sounds pretty busy behind the kit. Also, I hope Joe Cool is right about some the wheels turning within a week or so. Oh, can't stop the train from rolling!

The Metontour vid makes the song seem a little less pasted together. The Youtube clips sound more like a bunch of riffs slapped together... I was a little worried on the Youtube clips... a little relieved at the MOT clip. I bet this sounds amazing from the studio.
Still a little more bluesier at times (ie, Loadish) than I expected... I'm glad they didn't lose that fluidity.

I agree the song makes more sense on the Metontour vid. My first impression is it sounds like some kind of missing link between the Black album and Load. I wouldn't be surprised if Rob had a major hand in the writing and arranging of this one, it grooves and bounces in places. Good as a taster for the album.

it sounds pasted together partly because of mission metallica. we got a bunch of MM clips in the song..so that makes it sound like a Mission Metallica Medley.

OK, after hearing the MOT version, I can say that it isn't disjointed like I was afraid of. When they were playing it live, I was having flashbacks to the first time we heard St. Anger from the Fillmore, and it was like "Why a slow section there when you were already in full-on thrash mode?" In St. Anger, that transition and the one back to the main riff basically eliminate any momentum and negate everything that happened before and make the song a bit pointless. Cyanide's transition to the Drums/Bass part was the part that was really worrying me the first time I heard it, but listening to it several times (which is a necessity for any good song) has convinced me that there isn't any loss of momentum in that section, and that the riffs are actually building on each other throughout the song, even during the 180 degree turnarounds in beat patterns. This is a cool song. Now I'll go read blabbermouth and let them tell me how it sucks, the band sucks, Dallas sucks, gravity sucks, and I suck for not agreeing with them.

alot of death and suicide. i dunno how to explain this but i prefer when the subject matter is delivered from the "help me" side..not the "do it" side. music sounds good but i think im a little too old to sing along to this one.

The first verison of the song I heard was the MoT version. Ironcially enough, I got that a YouTube (just clicked on the longest clip among the top search results). Anyway, I like what I hear, but I'll need to listen more and maybe find something with a little bit better vocal mix. Still, I'm going to go back and listen to that right now.

Sorta funny story from the King Diamond thing... Lars was introducing King and the MF medley and said that they had found out King lived about 5 minutes away and so they had to take the opportunity to bring him out... when King came onstage the person next to me (who had clearly never heard of Mercyful Fate) looked at me and said "I don't think I've seen HIM at the supermarket before? Seems like he would stand out." Got a laugh out of that, especially considering what a soccer-mom sort of area this is. The mental image of him in full makeup standing in the express line to get some eggs had me chuckling all nite. Amazing concert, great crowd, and now I'll shut up and let others post.

Well here is my opinion...
First off, the song is incredible. But there a few things I noticed. The simplicity of the main riff (Sex Type Thing-esque) kind of reminds me of the simplicity of some of the St. Anger riffs (i.e. Frantic). The same can be said for the relative progressiveness yet repetitiveness of this song. Therefore, I believe that this is what St. Anger would have sounded like if they were to have "finished" the album by adding more production and solos to it.
That being said, I believe that this track is more powerful and infectious than anything off St. Anger. Just my two-cents on the matter. I'm curious to know if anybody agrees.

i was thinking the same thing sean. and there are a few drum parts where it sounds like Larz is just making it up as he goes along, almost like a drum solo. Do love the riffs that have been on MM. Probably sounds wayyy better on the album.

I definitely like it. The song structure and rapid changes remind me of the Megedeth Rust in Peace album (not the riffs). It is Black Album riffmanship meets AJFA structureship. I am glad it sounds like they're gonna have some "groove" songs on the album to go along with "thrash" speed songs though. I am still a big fan of the Bellz & God that Failed-type songs.

Overall I think it sounds really good ( the poor sound quality probably isn't doing it any justice)but the beginnign of the part where it is just rob and lars playing(before the main riff comes in)sounds forced and a little out of place. Hopefully its because they are still rehearsing these tunes and maybe they aren't totally comfortable playing them as a unit yet.

According to different Magazine reviews of Death Magnetic in June, Cyanide is not the best song on DM..
"...another(song) features an almost RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE-esque drum 'n' bass undercurrent and lyrics about 'suicide' and 'cyanide'..."
"...Track five has another strong opening, with an uncharacteristic bouncing groove not a million miles away from RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE making appearances throughout setting off sharp riffs that come up against an irregular barrage of percussion that sets it off briefly on a more melodic path and builds up once again into a thrilling riff-fest mayhem... "

Well it was killer to be reading all about the new song on this website but not being able to hear it cause youtube is blocked!!! Now I finally get to hear it... man the quality makes it so hard to have an opinion on the whole thing. It sounds really cool and groovy, defenetly all over the place, so many tempo changes! I am really hesitent to make any comments on the it until I hear better quality. But I like where it's going :)

Sean/General: It is hard to tell where the death and suicide lyrics are coming from because of the sound quality. I am not a huge fan of that type of lyric but I will know better when I can hear a better recording and have a lyric/cover art slip in my hand. Then you can tell the context. I am encouraged by what we could hear.

Hard to make out the lyrics because of the quality, so I'm sure a lot of the words are wrong:
Sleep And dream of this An Angel's kiss Brings final bliss Come believe it
Empty Coffin Death won't you let me stay Empty Casket Death, hear me call your name Call your name
Suicide I've already died It's just the funeral I've been waiting for Cyanide Bring me death inside Break this empty shell forevermore
Wait Wait patiently Go on death-black wings One falling slip Pray for me
Empty Coffin Death won't you let me stay Empty Casket Death, hear me call your name Call your name
Suicide I've already died It's just the funeral I've been waiting for Cyanide Bring me death inside Break this empty shell forevermore
Say is that rain or are they tears They stain your concrete face for years Crying, weeping, shedding strife Year after year Life after life
Manhandles, frush lay broken ground (No clue what the "F" he's saying here at all!) A concrete angel there I found Upon the earth but falling fast With peace at last For peace at last
Empty Casket Death won't you let me stay Death, elates me Death, hear me call your name Call your name
Suicide I've already died It's just the funeral I've been waiting for Cyanide Bring me death inside Break this empty shell forevermore
Forevermore Forevermore Just the funeral I've been waiting for

Infectious grooves, man! Yes, the pun was intended. Cyanide kicks ass! Great song. Great live band. Masters of their instruments. By far, Earth's greatest band. I really need DEATH MAGNETIC, NOW!!! I'll be feeding off of this live version until the full album is released. Just over a month away. Are you feeling the mighty sounds of Metallica, pumping through your veins, I'm feeling it, brothers and sisters! The single couldn't come any sooner. THE DAY THAT NEVER COMES!!!

I'm starting to like it more. It just has a lot of tempo changes and it's hard to wrap your mind around and try to make out the lyrics, due to the quality. That Hetfield chug is awesome and again, Lars is pretty busy back there. I also like the dualing guitars around 6 minutes. Also, that Mercyful Fate medley was pretty cool. I like the roar in the "king of pain" part. Really cool! It's a great time to be a Metallica fan hearing this song and getting a new video/single very soon. "Wait, wait patiently..."

If you guys were honest enough you would say this song is not good at all. Listen to harvester of sorrow, then listen to cyanide... feel the amazing difference of quality, the hook, everything? Donīt be stupid guys, you were all saying St Anger was amazing when some songs leaked, and we all know itīs really terrible. This song is a poor version of load, a bunch of riffs with nonsense connection. Be honest, itīs non even a decent song.
