06/25/2008 Entry: "NEW 'TALLICA"

A new Metallica cover gets released with Kerrang magazine on July 16th. The new cover, played at least once live (partially on August 26th, 1995 at Donington) is of Iron Maiden's 'Remember Tomorrow.'

The track will be included in an Iron Maiden tribute CD released with the magazine.

YouTube Version of the 1995 performance.

(First!!) Good news :D

I love the guitar tone of the beginning of the Unforgiven on that clip!

It's too bad they're not covering Prowler, and those 14 year old little tykes don't do something else. Still bugs me, the whole 'tallica nickname. Maybe we can get lazier and shorten it to just 'ica.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 06/25/2008 06:21 PM EST

Watching Ghost Hunters now and they're investigating where Metallica recorded, The Presidio right now.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 06/25/2008 08:02 PM EST

MOTORBREATH666, i would go with "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner"....metallica like to play long song, so they're we go. That would be my choice. But instead they decide to go with "Remember Tomorrow". Anyways!!!

Posted by maiden @ 06/25/2008 08:08 PM EST

that would've been cool too Maiden. what I meant by tykes is that band black tide.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 06/25/2008 08:34 PM EST

Not going to lie.. I am not much of a fan of Maiden. I will hate the vocals till the day I die. Not my cup of tea, singing wise at least.

Posted by Nick @ 06/25/2008 09:11 PM EST

In my humble opinion, the greatest song Metallica ever covered is easily Am I Evil?. But one of the coolest versions of Metallica doing this is right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gGJ_bjn6QU&feature=related About 1:40 into the song, Kirk hands his guitar to Jason, Jason hands his bass to Kirk, James takes up the drums, and Lars sings!!! How fucking cool is that?! Words can't even describe. What do you guys think?

Posted by D-J @ 06/25/2008 09:30 PM EST

Maiden was ruined by Spinal Tap for me. The Stonehenge scene just really hit me one time... "if you need a 15 foot robot to sell it, how good is it?" Plus when I was young, I liked the whole epic story thing, but I read something one time where Jaymz said something about a song not being a book report, and I thought of "To Tame a Land" and it just broke. I still love some of the songs, especially the war songs from Powerslave, but I can't listen to anything after Somewhere in Time, because it's like they broke up, went off and honed the worst parts of their sound, and then came back together to make those bad parts really meld together into a big pile o' poo. I actually have developed an appreciation for Paul and the early stuff as the band has soured for me. I'd still rather listen to CoC or BLS or those Metalisa guys. Maiden just isn't it for me any more. (Yeah, I know, long answer to a question no one asked.)

Posted by Azrael @ 06/25/2008 09:32 PM EST

Holy shit, this rocks hard. This is a group of teens covering Am I Evil, Metalli-style, and they absolutely kick ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBhLm1qwN_g The vocalist does a really good job, too.

Posted by D-J @ 06/25/2008 09:43 PM EST

I would love to hear Hallowed Be Thy Name. That would be fun!

Posted by Tipper @ 06/25/2008 10:20 PM EST

I saw Maiden in concert earlier this year in Melbourne and I have to say that they fucking rip it up. They're old, but fuck me, they can still put on a fucking wicked show. Bruce Dickinson has an unbelieveable amount of energy and Steve Harris' fingers were a blur for two and a half hours. There are a lot a great metal bands around now, I love BLS, Stone Sour (who were also fucking awesome in concert), Trivium etc., etc. But, the older metal bands still show the younger ones how things are done. Megadeth's latest album is a ripper and so is Slayer's. Testament have also put out a new kick arse album and by the sounds of what we've heard so far, the new Metallica album will be awesome too. It seems like there is a bit of a resurgence of metal, after the Nu-Metal dark ages. You guys should check out some Aussie metal... there's heaps of great bands down under, including bands like Blood Duster, carpathian, Cog, The Butterfly Effect, Karnivool, Dreadnaught, Frankenbok, Parkway Drive, Shihad, Segression (who are now called Side Effect X), Sunk Loto, Bodyjar etc., etc.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 06/26/2008 01:56 AM EST

Thingy which ghost hunters episode was that?
I wonder when they recorded it?

Posted by sean @ 06/26/2008 08:51 AM EST

I just saw Maiden about a month in Chicago it was one of the best concerts ever. The reviews have been 100% positive and the crowd was just rocking and loud as hell the whole night. I guy I was with had never seen them and he said, I have never seen a band sound better then their CD's live and they did that night. Remember Tomorrow is a great song, glad they are covering it.

Posted by Mark @ 06/26/2008 10:38 AM EST

Sean, it looks like they recorded it on 7-26-07. Here's a link for part 1 of 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QE0wXZN6PpU

blabbermouth says that the posible release date is 17 of sep

Posted by kotrinio @ 06/26/2008 01:03 PM EST

So... did they find any ghost activity...???

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 06/26/2008 06:01 PM EST

Just watched the lateset fotw video. what the fuck, it seems like all the issues they are having is with the drumming!??! I mean is the music that rally complex wher it's hard for Lars to change tempos and keep different rhythms, or is this whole new recording with Rubin's style/method that's throwing everything off with thedrums. I know during the black album they took a long time with the drums...is this the same thing? or should I get worried about Lars's playing?? I dunno, seems like everyone else is not having a problem and the guitars are just ripping it up. Maybe the vox are an issues as well????

Posted by MONSTER @ 06/26/2008 06:38 PM EST

cool thanks. I love that show but i guess i missed that one.

Posted by sean @ 06/26/2008 10:58 PM EST

Found this on a dutch recordstore online shop:

"Releasedatum: 26-09-2008"

Posted by Juztice @ 06/27/2008 09:11 AM EST

All they found on that GhostHunters was the haunted remnants of Lars' snare.

Posted by IS-JD @ 06/27/2008 09:50 AM EST

Monster, They are showing the recording process and drums are first. They will have issues I am sure with the guitar and bass and vocals along the way. They are though it appears going in chronological order.

Posted by Mark @ 06/27/2008 12:02 PM EST

At the rate M:M is going, the album release date is September 2010.

Posted by IS-JD @ 06/27/2008 12:31 PM EST

M:M was neat for a while... now I am getting bored with it. Who's with me?

Posted by DuManchu @ 06/27/2008 04:17 PM EST

i still like it. Some of it is stale, but when they play riffs and listen to their tracks, that makes it worth it. Hearing things and wondering if you could picture it on an album. I say Sept. 16.

Posted by The General @ 06/27/2008 09:39 PM EST

lol JD

Posted by sean @ 06/28/2008 01:16 AM EST

Oh, trust me... I'm as addicted to M:M as anyone else. It's just not Jump in the Studio, which gave us bigger bites and more sustenance.

Posted by IS-JD @ 06/28/2008 01:44 AM EST

I have to agree with the M:M being boring. The clips just really have nothing in them. The only clip I felt that was worth it was the one with Rob playing that "Flamingo". The rest have just them talking about songs we know nothing about...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 06/28/2008 12:26 PM EST

The flamingo one and the one where Kirk ask James if he's plaing the forth or the fifth. This is what i like, no jam bulshit, they know music and can play and create songs with knowledge. A minor technical detail can chage a whole song sound!

Posted by Bleeding @ 06/28/2008 03:00 PM EST

fourth

Posted by Bleeding @ 06/28/2008 03:01 PM EST

I am soooo glad they changed the key i that vid. It sounded like sublime until they changed the key. Now that part sounds kick ass.

Posted by Nick @ 06/28/2008 03:27 PM EST

I know I sound like a cynic sometimes, but really let's just all agree that there is still no news coming from Metallica. All we've gotten since the new year is a release date of September-someday, and the title Death Magnetic. Both are fine, but damn this is ridiculous!

I know some of you were like me and bought the tribute to Morricone just for the one Metallica song, and the newest Santana CD because Kirk played on one track... I guess I'll do almost anything for new Metallica but jeez, this wait is worse than the one for Load or St Anger!

Posted by Tipper @ 06/28/2008 05:45 PM EST

well lars sitting in a bathrobe eating every video is kinda like i said before this whole thing started ..you're gonna be paying to watch an author write a book. and for a hundred dollars you get a hard copy and a soft cover, a book mark and occassionally someone is gonna read a few words from the book.

Posted by sean @ 06/28/2008 07:39 PM EST

I noticed that we haven't got to Riff's or Excerpts yet. I wonder if it's pretty much all fotw from here, or if they will expand the types of content. I think we might see a longer set of fotw's about the single after it's out. And I'm going with 9-9 just because I don't want to deal with several more weeks delay.

Posted by Azrael @ 06/29/2008 11:07 AM EST

Yeah, I was expecting more by now too. It would be cool to hear riffs and bits from demos that they may not use on the album.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 06/29/2008 11:05 PM EST

Best M:M yet?

Posted by IS-JD @ 06/30/2008 12:44 PM EST

I guess I just don't worry about it on a daily basis. I check it out everyday, but have kept my expectations low as far as getting real new info/tunes. I think they realize some of us felt mislead by the soundbits from JITS(which lead me to different expectations than what actually surfaced on St. Anger). I'm also fairly certain the record company wants as little finished product available as possible. In conclusion, I like MM, but could just as well have done without it as long as I knew the release date. As long as I have a concrete timetable to know when to expect these hopefully awesome tunes, I'm OK.

Posted by kurt @ 06/30/2008 01:45 PM EST

... or maybe it's still another 2 months at least before the album comes out which means at least 60 more FOTW clips they have to edit and show us so they are saving the good stuff for the last stretch????????

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 06/30/2008 04:10 PM EST

Humm... James with a 7 strings... kind of strange on him..

Welcome back, LOSO. Now we need GREENHELL97. Whatever happened to him?

Posted by Ice Nine @ 07/01/2008 03:51 PM EST

Old greenhell sure did stir up some shit. I think he got banned though. Got the new tallica ringtone. Pretty cool. If ya got the platinum thing they send you an email about it. The aerosmith guitar hero only had like 40 songs on it. It was OK, but definitely too light on the tracks.

Posted by kurt @ 07/01/2008 06:35 PM EST

You know... GREENHELL97 is/was a mortal enemy of JD. I take everything everyone says with a grain of salt, and at work I'll look at old postings because I dig this site and remember the old (ugly) orangish graphics, though it's always been the best place to chat with fellow Metallifucks. I'm pissed that JD blocked me at work, so sometimes when I get home, it's pants off infront of the cpu while looking at clips of Audrey Bitoni. Maybe we can petition to bring back GH97, call TOSO, Threaten LOSO if he doesn't post more often, and have a reunion!?!

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 07/01/2008 06:47 PM EST

My point about pants off was sometimes I forget to post on here when I get home!

Did any mission metallica platinum members get an email about texting a code for a free ringtone of a new song? Just curious, I did that yesterday and haven't heard anything yet.

Posted by SRW @ 07/03/2008 12:33 AM EST

new fly on the wall video with some lyrics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHUDmRlN5hQ

Posted by Tipper @ 07/03/2008 12:38 AM EST

For the ringtone: Sent the text code. Got an email that it would be delivered soon. Nothing since. Figured the same people who send out the Metclub memberships must be responsible for sending the responses. It's the JITS guy and Phil Towle doing it, btw. Lars is keeping them employed and busy by having them type in the 1's and 0's manually for each ringtone. Then he asks them over and over whether they think the verse is faster than the chorus, and complains to them about the click-track. And you thought your job sucked.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/03/2008 08:00 AM EST

got the email yesterday, clicked on it and got the ringtone a few minutes later - death magnetic !!! these last few fotw clips have been really good. jeez man, blabbermouth was in full bash mode 2 seconds after the posting of that article. typical.

Posted by The General @ 07/03/2008 08:44 AM EST

So how much of "Death Magnetic" is actually in the ringtone?

Posted by Ice Nine @ 07/03/2008 10:12 AM EST

its just james playing the 3 dollar casio piano E....E...F...E
"hello?"

Posted by sean @ 07/03/2008 12:46 PM EST

I got the rington within 5 minutes.

Posted by KURT @ 07/03/2008 01:21 PM EST

Yep, turns out my phone isn't compatible with the service for some reason or other. I think it's endorsed by Kerry King or something. Tried it with my other phone, but too late, since you can only use the code once. Oh well.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/03/2008 04:00 PM EST

Went to a record store and found the Creeping Death vinyl for $100 today. I thought about getting it, but I'm holding off for now. I'll probably regret it, but I have to save my $ for some stuff coming up. They also had a BBC bootleg Metallica vinyl from '82 w/ Mustaine and McGovney listed-wanted $35 for it. It had Ronald Reagan on the cover of it and had the same Metallica font as Justice.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/03/2008 07:17 PM EST

I really dig that "Revolver" ditty. Has a Pantera ish type feel, though the guitar playing,a nd singing are much better than anything Pantera. Sorry Pantera fans! I'm GH huh? hahaha... I had a greenish type discharge from an STD, but hey... whaddy gonna do

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 07/03/2008 08:08 PM EST

So is it the same ringtone that they play to reveal the album title?

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/03/2008 08:44 PM EST

Thingy, it's the same, only 20 seconds. Would have been awesome if it had a different part of the song, but it's ok...still coo to hear that whnever i get a call.

September will mark a great month. New Metallica and Trivium albums. Wow! can't wait. Oh yea, Happy Independence Day.

Posted by Bond @ 07/05/2008 01:21 AM EST

I'm going to say September 16th. It's right in the middle of the September Tuesdays. It's going to be a metal month with Shogun coming out on the 30th.

Posted by Dave @ 07/05/2008 08:36 AM EST

Man, there's a new trivium album coming out in september? That news almost cancels out the arrival of new Metallica.

I was really hoping Trivium would've split up now, a real shame :(

Posted by caspian @ 07/05/2008 11:21 AM EST

cancels out? What are you some kind of moron? Only an apocalyptic event could cancel out the arrival of new Metallica. Trivium isn't even trivial, not a blip on the radar. If you feel that lightly about it why even post here?? Don't like Trivium, fine, ignore them, no bearing on Metallica. What a dumb thing to say.

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 07/05/2008 02:26 PM EST

actually, an apocalyptic event may even enhance a new Metallica record... what a perfect soundtrack for it.

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 07/05/2008 02:28 PM EST

I thought it was "Give me Limburger or give me death."

Posted by Seth @ 07/05/2008 04:09 PM EST

Those new lyrics from the latest fotw are going to look great on the booklet: "Bbbbbbbbbb-bbbbbbbbbb-bbbbbbbbbb - yeaaahhhhh!!!!!!"
Actually, I was very encouraged by the appearance of a trademark "yo-growl" grunting thing.
And, um, Blaster... you know, there are a lot of decaf brands that taste just as good as the real thing.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/05/2008 04:58 PM EST

I like some stuff by Trivium, but yeah who cares about some Metallica-wannabe band? I know we all get our craving for old-school metal. I do, but I realize that Trivium is exactly that... trivial. It's cool when there's nothing better coming out. They are mistaken for putting an album out at the same time as Metallica.

Dumb move Trivium, you're record sales will be swallowed by the real deal.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/05/2008 08:04 PM EST

FOTW videos for the fourth and fifth are pretty cool! I hear newer riffs!

Posted by Tipper @ 07/05/2008 09:26 PM EST

C'mon, enough of the Trivium bashing. They are an awesome band. At least they admit that Metallica are their favourite band and they pay tribute to them at just about every show. I have a live Trivium DVD where they get the crowd to shout out to "the greatest metal band in the world - METALLICA!!!!" Not many bands would get the entire crowd at their concert to shout out and chant another band's name. So if you don't like them, I don't really give a fuck. But they carry the Metallica legacy in a way that no other band does. So bring on September - new Metallica, new Trivium and a new album from one of Australia's premiere bands - The Butterfly Effect.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 07/05/2008 09:53 PM EST

I have to admit that I've never understood the whole "My band is great, so your band sucks" thing. It's like the old Phil Anselmo tough guy attitude that led to Dime's death. Completely unnecessary. It's like having to diminish everyone else to make your band better. In reality, there are only 4 bands in this genre - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. All 4 had their own brand of something that they derived from what Black Sabbath brought forth, combined with their own influences. (An argument could be made for Suicidal, but they were more born of punk than metal.) Anyway, all the rest of the bands that came since are really just derivations of one of the schools that the 4 founding bands wrought. So they are all more of a dilution of the originals, and are somewhat lesser because of that. But at the same time, they have added something new to the world of metal that wasn't there before, and it shouldn't be necessary to tear them down to make Metallica better. "These are great, but a new Metallica album is more important" is a fine attitude. Slipknot, Lamb, Shadows Fall, COC, ... it's great that there is this whole rebirth of real metal that we are being exposed to because of the Intertoobs and Satellite radio. Rejoice that we have all this great real music to listen to. Like what you like, and anyone who tells you a band sucks is just showing their own insecurity about their favorite band... Except DragonFarce. Those guys blow goats.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/06/2008 12:00 AM EST

okay, so you like "new" metal bands. That's fine. Let's compare...shall we? Exhibit A: Slipknot, Shadows Fall, Trivium, COC... Exhibit B: Metallica.

Okay... if new albums by all of these bands were coming out on the same day... would you rather have a new album by each band in Exhibit A, or one new album by the band in Exhibit B?

The funny thing is I already know what your choice would be, and denying that is silly.

So does Trivium suck? no, they're quite talented! I love that they're influenced by old Metallica, but their last album ripped off Metallica's style. All I'm saying is if you want Metallica-Lite, buy the new Trivium album. Nothing wrong with that. Some people really dig Nickelback. I guess that's okay, as long as I don't have to hear about it, especially on a Metallica site.

I guess it's all down to personal tastes. That's good because otherwise we would have a lot of bands that sound alike.

Have you ever thought that maybe "paying tribute" to Metallica was Trivium's way of riding their coattails? That is what my opinion is.

It doesn't mean I'm wrong, or you're wrong for liking them. Like I said, they're talented, but I think they're talented enough to branch out on their own, instead of doing what they're doing now, which is an 80's Thrash Revival of-sorts.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/06/2008 01:23 AM EST

about trivium... it goes a little something like this:
trivium=yay I heart teh metallicas OMG look my parents bought me a guitar and a halfstack for christmasLOL let's get together and record songs that sound like old metallica and we'll get noticed!

harmonies:check

hetfieldish vocals:check

lyrics: FAIL. songs of unity? dude are you serious?

guitar sound:FAIL. you can't just plug a 2x4 with EMG's into a dual recto and hit record! figure out how to use a parametric equalizer, and maybe try to come up with your OWN sound. Hint: ENGL Blackmore + G Major, and go from there.

bass:what bass

drums:dude, if lars has taught us anything, it is that a drummer can get away with no rhythm. you just gotta make sure that hetfield's right hand is there to save the day.

Anyway, from the sniplets that I've heard of the new album, I think that it'll be better than St.Anger, but it certainly will not be another Master. I can't wait to hear it for what it is, given that Hetfield can't sing yet insists on having his vocals turned up louder and louder on the last 4 albums, I just hope that Rubin can compensate for it by producing the living sh#t out of this record.

that's my two cents.

Posted by DIEonyourFEET @ 07/06/2008 09:07 AM EST

who are the bigger posers 19/20 year olds trying to sound like "80s thrash" or 45 year olds trying to sound like "80s thrash"
its a tie if you ask me. so who cares.

Posted by sean @ 07/06/2008 10:00 AM EST

I think James should soften up his voice here and there, get rid of the raspiness cause sometimes it's just overkill. I think even during heavy parts he doesn't need to be so throaty sometimes and it will still be kick ass.

Posted by Tony @ 07/06/2008 10:52 AM EST

Sean, that's like criticizing the Rolling Stones for playing Gimme Shelter, Brown Sugar or Angie live. Sounds like you're trying to call Metallica a bunch of posers.

I know what you're saying, I just think you're saying it the wrong way. Metallica backed off their original inspirations arguably by the second/third album. Trivium seems to emulate their inspirations on The Crusade (which I own), compared to their earlier, more original work.

A lot of people look confused when I tell them I love Megadeth. They think that Megadeth sounds just like Metallica. Maybe Killing is my Business sounds like very early Metallica, but that's about all the comparisons I can tell. On occasion Dave will directly rip a Metallica riff for a song of his own (and I can tell you which songs). Anyway, Megadeth is different enough to where anyone who pays attention will notice the difference. Dave never copied Metallica. When he steals a riff it's always intentional - his own personal revenge. It's also never a hit song, it's always tucked away on an otherwise great Megadeth album.

Sorry to go on and on... I just really enjoy talking about metal bands I love. Trivium can be great and I hope they will be some day.

I am a big fan of The Sword's new album Gods of the Earth. Anybody else like them?

Posted by Tipper @ 07/06/2008 12:29 PM EST

I just got introduced to a band called Bullet For My Valentine.. Being a Metallica fan for the better part of my 30 years, I think this band is taking great steps in the right direction to becoming the Metallica of the future. Thoughts?

Posted by Metallica For Life @ 07/06/2008 03:04 PM EST

yeah the sword is decent.new FOTW-- I love how james plays 2 notes out of an A chord and ppl r like OMG ITS LIKE ONE/NEM!! I dont understand this whole riff stealing business..its fucking metal..theres only so many ways you can bang on an E chord. of course riffs are gonna sound the same. hanger 18 sounds like call of kutlu because there both dave mustaines riffs. trust sounds like enter sandman because 60 percent of standard tuned metal riffs go 000-7-8 000-7-8

Posted by sean @ 07/06/2008 03:12 PM EST

bullet for my valentine are good but they are popular, arent all butt ugly, dont warship the devil, girls also like them..so they are posers. and there riffs go 000-7-8- 000-7-8 so they obviously rip off slayer and metallica. or atleast thats the popular opinion of metalheads.

Posted by sean @ 07/06/2008 03:15 PM EST

BFMV are terrible emocore disguised as metal. Don't be fooled by them; quite possibly the worst band in existence.

Posted by caspian @ 07/06/2008 09:53 PM EST

I hear good and bad things about BFMV. Honestly, metal isn't my bag right now. I'm listening to a lot of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Tom Waits. the new N.E.R.D. album, King Crimson. Guess I'm on an alternative kick. :)

Posted by Tipper @ 07/07/2008 12:19 AM EST

Ok, here goes... (get the soap box ready)... If you really want to get back to it, when it comes to stealing styles and riffs, then there are a few milestone musos. Obviously, in the 50's, it was Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, even B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. In the 60's, it was Hendrix and bands like Cream, the Stones and the Beatles. In the 70's, when metal really originated, it was Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Motorhead and Judas Priest. In the 80's, it was Metallica, Megadeth (to a much lesser extent), Slayer, Anthrax and Sepultura. In the 90's, it was Pantera... then the whole nu-metal, grunge and death/doom/black/hardcore/metalcore etc movements kind of killed the traditional 'heavy metal' for a while. But basically, everyone rips everyone else off. There are only notes A through to G in major and minor scales, and variants thereof, but basically, there are only so many combinations that people can come up with, based on those notes and chords. So, in essence, everybody sounds like everybody else. Back to the whole Trivium thing, people are saying they are a watered down Metallica... well, obviously, if they are trying to sound like Metallica, they will never be as good at it as Metallica... because they are NOT Metallica!!! They have never professed to be!!! But even Metallica ripped off bands that they liked when they started!!! And, in my opinion, Trivium's "The Crusade" album, sounds more like Metallica than Metallica's last 3 albums. Basically, I love metal in all it's shapes and sizes and I don't really care who sounds like who. If two bands sound similar and you like they style, then that just gives you 2 bands to like instead of just one. And if you don't like something, then don't fucking listen to it!!!! Rock on and R.I.P Dime.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 07/07/2008 03:42 AM EST

Trivium is a great metal band. Sometimes you got to have a taste of new shit, instead of hearing the same ol 80's and 90's. Trivium did a good job in incorporating the Metallica music sound in their style. every band is different. Good job Trivium, can't wait for Shougun!

i agree 100 percent with harvester. i do applaud bands good or bad who have an unmistakable sound like U2,korn,red hot chili peppers, tool, fear factory--good or bad you cant deny that. anyways new fotw is the new song! lmao nononononono wtf metallica. metallicas problem is they play way too bluesy esp. kirk ..we need neoclassical shit ..its like kirk is trying to play hendrix and page over a whiplash riff ughhh. playing aint my bitch and 2x4 just alot faster doesnt make it metal.

Posted by sean @ 07/07/2008 01:42 PM EST

oh jeez, I thought they canned that garbage. hopefully Rubin isn't trying to capture some of the nu metal crowds with that crap......if that song is even on the new album. New Song #1 makes Prince Charming sound as good as Stairway to Heaven. Ughhh. say it aint so RR?

That could b old, or maybe they just took that part of the song? Who knows...

lol general..everyone knows prince charming is wayy better than stairway and of course new song number one blows away both.

Rob has already stated in an interview that New Song won't be on the new album, not in "that form" anyhow, think they just stole parts of that song to add to another. So relax everyone, any footage of them in HQ has got to be old.

Prince charming is one of my faves from reload. One of my favorite hetfield lines is on that song "im a dirty dirty whore"

Posted by Robert @ 07/08/2008 08:31 PM EST

I dig Prince Charming too. My favorite line is "I'm the nothing face that plants the bomb and strolls away. I'm the one that doesn't look quite right as children play." Cool wah solo from Kirk in this song too!

Posted by EET FUK @ 07/08/2008 11:04 PM EST

Yeah, Prince Charming isn't all that bad. I like the guitar in the beginning and the "nothing face" part is cool, as well. Reload isn't all that bad. I think MetallicA just gets a lot of heat because they released the timeless classics so early in their career. Reload's still better than some of the crap that's on the radio today.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/08/2008 11:18 PM EST

Sorry for another post, but I just went to Metallica.com and now they have a 1-minute clip of Remember Tomorrow. Earlier today, they only had a 30-second clip. So if you folks didn't know, go back and check it out. http://metallica.com/index.asp?1=1&item=600988

I always liked prince charming. I haven't listened to it much of late, but never understood the bashing of it. As far as New Song #1, I'm pretty sure that's old clips(some lars still has that grown out beard he had a couple years back). It makes sense to me to show that, cause they really don't want to put too much new music on there. Notice, the only longer musical clips we have gotten is that song, most of the rest of the clips are less than 10 seconds.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/09/2008 09:20 PM EST

I wish they would completely follow Radiohead or NIN's marketing strategy and allow fans to download for free or set their own price for a limited time. They could release it right now and then make a lot in retail album sales later. Radiohead's album "In Rainbows" is proof that this model can work.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/10/2008 12:49 AM EST

no offense, but that is a stupid idea. Metallica will do their own thing.

Posted by The General @ 07/10/2008 08:51 AM EST

What the hell does "a little more nightmare-ish" mean??? Kirk is funny that way.

And I dont think it's a stupid idea at all to go toward Radiohead and NIN way of selling albums. It's pretty much the way of the future, to think that driving to a store and buying a CD is gonna be around much longer is kinda silly. Bands are gonna have to rely more on merchandise and concert sales in the future.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/10/2008 11:57 AM EST

they couldnt follow radiohead with this release because the are still under a record label where as radiohead isnt. they may do something similar with the next release id say since warner will be outa the picture...but who give a shit anyways, they will do what they do

Posted by mark @ 07/10/2008 01:40 PM EST

Metallica has to be sitting on SOOOOOO many unreleased tracks as well. They had about 4 Ramones covers that they never released. You know once they are out from the record label they are just gonna release ALL that stuff over the net for cheap and make a killing.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/10/2008 08:54 PM EST

Mark, that's a very good point. Of course Metallica will do what they do. I'm just thinking about how Lars really spoke well of NIN and Radiohead's marketing strategies for their newer albums.

Metallica is obviously a higher-selling artist than either of them, but if you followed the reports on Ghosts Vol. 1-4 and In Rainbows, you'll notice that both of those bands made more money on those two records than on any previous album. In Radiohead's case, In Rainbows earned them more money than their combined intake on all previous albums, and that's in less than a year.

So if you want to market a new Metallica album today, you follow the trends. Those are the trends and like them or not, they are definitely working in favor of the artists.

As for artwork, I do enjoy looking at the liner notes, lyrics, photos and packaging. I'm a graphic designer so I truly appreciate the effort put into album artwork.

One thing that infuriates me to no end... is the new fad of opening a newly-purchased album, opening the cover and finding.... just the disc. No booklet, No lyrics, not a damn thing more than you would get if you just downloaded it illegally. It's a sad effort to save a few cents (at most, album packaging costs 50 cents to produce). Unfortunately that's how things go today. I don't believe Metallica would ever skimp on the packaging, and I'm not in favor of getting the MP3's without any type of artwork to go along with it. What I would like is the ability to download the PDF of artwork, so you can get the full "experience" of opening a new album, the presentation, etc.

There are ways to make this work. Paying for Mission Metallica is a poor and underdeveloped marketing idea. It's not bad, but charging for that much for "Behind the Scenes" may-or-may-not be on the album riffs. When the album becomes available, I'll buy it the day it drops, preferably the hour the store opens. I've been a fan for 15 years, and I also appreciate other types of music.

Anyway, the point I'm making is that Metallica and it's managers are not infallible and with a great album should be great marketing strategies. Offering the album in MP3 format for $5 would net the band more money in sales than any previous album.

Metallica has nothing to lose with this strategy. And if they plan it right, neither do we. For Pete's sake, we could have been listening to Death Magnetic by now with this idea!

So General, tell me how is this stupid?

Posted by Tipper @ 07/10/2008 08:56 PM EST

Ya know I had a revelation the other day. The folks watching M:M with bated breath are the folks who are going to buy the album anyone. Joe Schmuck who MIGHT buy it if he hears a new song isn't really gonna give a care about a couple snippets of songs... again, I do think M:M is a piss poor idea. You're selling to people who are already buying.

Posted by IS-JD @ 07/10/2008 10:52 PM EST

I agree JD. Daily updates are nice though. Even if the FOTW videos reveal nothing special, at least it's something. I'm speaking of course about the free access. I refuse to pay for something like that.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/10/2008 11:07 PM EST

But it's also hard to see Metallica going with straight downloads (even though its the future). They just did that big photo opp for Record Store Day, kinda hard to go back on that. But even though I don't mind the way music is all going digital I will miss all the artwork and stuff that come with an album, I know they'll release it on the net but it's always different when it's in your hand.

BUUUUUT here's another point, with NIN last album, when you downloaded it, there was a peice of artwork that would appear in your media player for every song! So one way it's bad we lose the booklets, another side it's kinda cool that it opens up for so much more.

Ahh well, all this is nothing if the music ain't good! Good point by Tipper though, we would be listening to the album if released online....

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/11/2008 12:01 AM EST

if metallica ever releases an album as radiohead did, a lot and i mean a lot of people aren't gonna pay just for the fact that they are "money grabbers" and lars sued napster and fuck 'em they have enough money....even if its for a limited time

Posted by xino @ 07/11/2008 01:16 AM EST

Tipper, you missed the point. Selling the album online is the future of album sales. What's STUPID is naming your own price, which I already said, but I'll say it again. Naming your price for an album is STUPID. I will be buying the album from the store. Did I mention that naming you own price for an album was not a good idea? lol

Posted by sean @ 07/11/2008 12:24 PM EST

Okay General. I'll play this your way. I originally mentioned several ideas about the overall online marketing strategy that Lars Ulrich is interested in (and has been proven successful). Referencing your earlier posts is fine and all, but maybe you should be more specific when you comment. You made a comment about one part of what I mentioned, yet you failed to mention what you were talking about. Here's what you said (so you know I'm not paraphrasing). Notice you did not say "Naming your price for an album is STUPID".

comment 1
"no offense, but that is a stupid idea. Metallica will do their own thing."

comment 2
"buying it online is one thing, naming your own price is another. sean you know you want artwork."

comment 3
"Tipper, you missed the point. Selling the album online is the future of album sales. What's STUPID is naming your own price, which I already said, but I'll say it again. Naming your price for an album is STUPID. I will be buying the album from the store. Did I mention that naming you own price for an album was not a good idea? lol"

Okay, well maybe I missed your point (I can understand that.) The thing is, you never made your point, at least not in a way that makes sense, in the first place.

While I appreciate people commenting on the topics at present in Metallica news and in things I have questions or ideas about, I don't think you should follow that with ...."That's STUPID". That is disrespectful. Mark who commented after I posted made a very good point, and it contributes to discussions on the comment board.

Of course Metallica will do what they want to do. That's part of what makes them unique and so interesting. Constantly evolving. I appreciate that.

General, I suggest you do some research on album marketing and internet distribution. There are many ways in which online distribution can match and surpass the album you buy in a brick-and-mortar store.

And on the Record Store Day appearance... don't be so sure that going all digital will kill Ma-and-Pop stores. Where I live, there are already stores with kiosks that allow people to download entire albums (paid for, of course) and take it with them on a thumb drive. Not everyone has an iPod or computer with net. There are plenty of people who still buy CD's. While I do download albums on occasion, I ALWAYS buy the albums that are excellent throughout or the rare album that is hard to find anywhere else.

Growing up there was one store that sold new/used CD's and featured the largest collection of bootlegs I'd ever seen. They probably had 30+ Metallica bootlegs in stock on any given day. You can't download that stuff. There will always be a need for physical stores and I am happy to go to one.

Is the "name your price" option stupid? no. Bands can set their minimum to $5 for a download and they still making a killing in profits. As I understand it, a band probably makes 50 cents to a dollar on each album sold. If a band allows you to set your own price and the minimum is $5, of course everyone will just pay the minimum. Any more you choose to pay is like a donation.

Metallica is still under contract to Warner for one more album, Death Magnetic. They are trying a new marketing approach. Is it working? Not for me. I'll buy it on day one. As someone who deals with marketing daily, I'm also one of the first to see through what I call "gimmicks". Special features on DVD's, Hologram slipcase covers, downloadable ringtones, it's all fine and good but I'm not interested.

So anyway, sorry for going into exposition mode, but I enjoy talking about marketing strategy and Metallica.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/12/2008 12:13 AM EST

I'm just going to buy the CD...put it in my CD player...and listen to it (while playing some serious air guitar).

Posted by Seth @ 07/12/2008 12:36 AM EST

I think the bands nowadays probably make more money on ring tones than they might on releasing an album. I think the general price for a ring tone is $2.99. I'm sure the wireless provider takes a cut of that and the band gets the rest. Anyway, I like the extra stuff that comes w/ a lot of CDs now. People want more and the record companies are aware of that and try to give us "extra" features to prevent downloading of the music for free. I'd like to see stats to see if more people download for free compared to people that download and then go out and buy that CD.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/12/2008 11:13 AM EST

It's the beauty of marketing, sometimes it's a killer strategy, some times it's bad. Just listen to publicity during the superball. One year you call them Genius, the year after it's like "re-heated" and it's bad.. but what is great is there always will be a next year to try something new... and be called genius again.

I keep reading about the pissing and moaning of the Missionmetallica site, and guys... they could've just given us generic updates on the new album like other bands do. Sure some of the fotw footage is crap, but shut the fuck up about it already... damn. I hate to say it, but the best maiden cover belongs to coheed and cambria, and lord knows how I loathe that fucking band! Everytime I hear the Remember tomorrow clip, I wonder if Lars forgot to play the toms. Hopefully during the recording of Death Magnetic they reminded him of how he played pre-bob rock. He has gotten lazy and really sloppy since bob rock started producing them. Watch the seattle show from 89 in the binge and purge box set, and watch a recent youtube clip and tell me different. Same can be said for Kirk's soloing to a lesser extent although so far this year, he's reclaimed his place as King shit amongst guitair players. Anyhow, off to wipe my ass, and wash the car!

hey Motorbreath, what song do Coheed and Cambria cover by Maiden? I'm a fan of their music and would love to hear what that might sound like! (the idea itself blows my mind).

And Iron Maiden is still one band that deserves more cred than they get. I could just listen to their music forever... After Metallica, Maiden is probably my second favorite (consistently good) metal band.

From Metallica.com: The Game Magnetic (Death for Guitar Hero)
7/14/2008 [ back ]

"Death Magnetic," the entire album, available for Guitar Hero too!

It's a first in both music and gaming . . . the same day that "Death Magnetic" hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for "Guitar Hero III!" We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release . . . who knows, maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out.

And for those of you who are anxiously awaiting the next Guitar Hero, "World Tour," we're ready for that too . . . you will be able to experience "Death Magnetic" for drums, vocals, and guitar when that game emerges this Fall.

Keep watching here for the where, when, and how stuff . . .

Posted by The General @ 07/15/2008 10:16 AM EST

I of course wish they would, but something tells me not to get my hopes up. I think it more likely we'll hear new stuff in August around Ozzfest. But at least that is not that far away. And at least we will all be rocking out to Remember Tomorrow, TOMORROW!!!

Posted by D-J @ 07/15/2008 11:11 AM EST

I take it back. The FOTW vids are insanely insightful. For example, when I listen to the album, I'll be able to go "Hey, that's the part where Lars lost his clog." *bitch bitch bitch* I hate waiting. I actually would love to see a "Year and a Half" or SKOM video around this. I hope the coffin box extras are less disjointed and really tell the story, because Rick's process of changing the band's process seems fascinating. And yes, I've given up and accepted that I'll be buying the coffin box (along with the copy I buy on Amazon so that it'll be there delivered to me on time, and the copy I'll buy from the record store the day it comes out in case the amazon copy isn't there first...) Maybe I should just direct deposit my paycheck to Lars' bank account. Cut out the middle man.

Congrat to Kirk and Lani on the new addition. Not only are there enough Metali-kids to have a band of their own, there are enough to fill the liquor roadie positions.

lovin the new metallica cover. The boys are back, listened to the original Iron maiden version. The metallica version KILLS IT.. James voice is back, and the Drums are great !!!! Cant wait for new Metallica when they spend more time on it.... I liken this to a cover on Garage Days ReRevisited $5.98 or something and this would not be out of place on one this... So, I don't listen to the radio much, but I heard on my local rock station KBPI, they expect to have the first single from Death Magnetic first week of August. What's up with Brett Favre... he alone has ruined the packers season. Hahahahaha.... first half of his career he was really good, second half... heh... the best mediocre qb in the league. Don't argue his stats... Montana, Elway, Unitas are legends. Favre is in his own way, but yes... I've started smack talk. Football season around the corner!

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 07/16/2008 08:32 PM EST

I do think they'll try to get something out there a little earlier before the album than they have for the last few, so I think sometime in August sounds about right. I guess the biggest surprise from their show in Norway on Wednesday was that they played Breadfan in the middle of the main set. Otherwise, nothing too shocking and they continued with that Last Caress/So What/Seek encore. I really hope that starts to get mixed up over the next few weeks.

Posted by Trace @ 07/16/2008 08:56 PM EST

First, thanks for posting the awesome Maiden tribute links. As always MetallicA's cover songs are always better than the originals! Say it with me now, MetallicA is the greatest band, always have been and always will be! Second, the Holy Revolver audio clips that are floating around on YouTube are absolutely mind blowing! James Hetfield is my favorite musician and singer of all time! I look up to him very much, he's truly an inspirational and great human being. From what I know of him, he appears to be a very positive and grounded "famous guy" role model and I highly repect and admire him for that. MetallicA's new album "Death Magnetic" will wipe that smile right off your face! Third, I truly hope that all you Metallica brothers and sisters are enjoying and making the best of the life that you're living, because DEATH is MAGNETIC for us all.

Pretty cool, I guess. Better than St. Anger. Only a few more weeks (hopefully) until the first single!

Posted by Ice Nine @ 07/17/2008 04:48 PM EST

I think the white background is what makes it look bland. Other than that I like it. Is it Pushead's work?

Posted by EET FUK @ 07/17/2008 05:31 PM EST

...But I have to admit that new artwork does look like a Gothic Pussy ;) And white background, oh well, is it going to be the "white" album ? However, I think it looks more creative than St Anger cover and after all, music is all that matters...

Posted by $trangeR @ 07/17/2008 05:52 PM EST

While it does look like a pussy, I like it. It's not a complete return to form as far as logo is concerned. The "C" and the last "A" is different. Picky Picky I know. Anyone else see the finger print?

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 07/17/2008 06:01 PM EST

fuckers think of how magnets work, it looks fucking incredible...

Posted by Tony @ 07/17/2008 06:48 PM EST

OK, So far people have seen a finger print and a pussy. I'm pretty sure neither of which was the artist's intent.

See the magnetic field? Its like a coffin bar magnet. Not a finger print pussy. Just clearing that up, heh.

Posted by Scott @ 07/17/2008 07:57 PM EST

I don't know how people can say that it looked "incomplete" or "bland". Put this album artwork up beside Kill 'Em All or Ride The Lightning artwork and tell me if this is any less detailed. I think in our heads we just associate the music with the artwork which gives it much more depth, once we start hearing this album and associate it with the music, we'll all love it. I think it's kinda cool how it gives you the whole sucking in motion toward the grave...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/17/2008 08:05 PM EST

Yeah, for me at first glance it looked just like the last PiL album, which well... yeah, that's what it looks like... http://www.amazon.com/That-What-Not-PiL/dp/B00000DR70/ref=pd_bbs_sr_7?ie=UTF8&s=music

Posted by Tim @ 07/17/2008 09:02 PM EST

Scott... I damn near had to punch someone for the dipshit remark. It's probably unlikely the graphic artist meant for it to look like a pussy. Anyone with half an eye can tell that the grave is "magnetically" pulling the dirt... But that is a finger print. I'm a graphic artist, and any artist worth shit puts little meanings, than just what appears. I like it

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 07/17/2008 09:07 PM EST

MOTORBREATH666, that is definitely not a finger print. its just a bar magnet. perhaps this will clear things up. link

Great interview with James Hetfield, thanks for posting the link. As far as the cover art goes......it's amazing, way better than I'd imagined it would be and I have a fantastic imagination! The cover art for me is a huge dose of reality...life is like a ride, live it and enjoy it, before the ride stops and you end up in a coffin, buried six feet underground...DEATH is MAGNETIC....I've said it a thousand times before and I'll say it a thousand more times, MetallicA is the greatest and best band of all time!!!!!

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 07/17/2008 11:07 PM EST

I fixed Scott's link for better viewing (side scrolling issues!).

I agree, the artwork looks unfinished or even lackluster. I did get the whole pole idea with the magnetism radiating off them. It is the white background and white coffin (with the terrible drop shadow) that just makes it seem not quite there.

I'm not sure what statement, they're trying to make... I just think it misses the mark.

Re: Remember Tomorrow. I didn't care for it much at first... computer speakers (even decent ones) on a lower volume don't do it justice.... even in the car with the top down, again with lower volume cause the nephew was in the car. But, finally cranked it in the Jeep and it sounded amazing... I might argue Anthrax did a better job at this tune though, but still it's Metallica.

Posted by IS-JD @ 07/17/2008 11:23 PM EST

I think the album cover is kind of cool. It has a "key hole" kind of look to it, as well. Anyway, it's the music that counts. Like others have mentioned, I wonder if this will be referred to the "white" album down the road. I still love the angel in St Anger! On a second note, I really like the way James sings on Remember Tomorrow especially the 2nd "horizon" part... shows a lot of range.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/17/2008 11:49 PM EST

I agree with most of the comments about the new artwork, what it resembles, etc. Yes I got the message of it being a bar magnet with metal filings arranged around the poles. Kind of hard how someone would NOT get that with the album being called Death Magnetic...

I don't think this is complete. There has to be more to it. More details... even if the coffin has a nice red plush, padded interior and there is grass around the outside...

I think the concept is great. "Death" + "Magnetic"... but I think more effort could have been given in the details. Then again... I loved how simple the Black Album's artwork was...

Posted by Tipper @ 07/18/2008 12:33 AM EST

then again.. with the simple Black on White design and the tons of white space... they could conceptually be making a "white album" - kind of a companion to the Black album.

I think symbolically it would show where James and the band are at with themselves now, compared to 1991 Metallica.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/18/2008 12:35 AM EST

The more I look at it the more I love it!!! I'm VERY happy with it and I'm not one to shy from critisism.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/18/2008 01:07 AM EST

BTW, did you notice the shape of the artwork picture, it looks like the new album is going to be released in a DVD box ?

Posted by $trangeR @ 07/18/2008 03:51 AM EST

I pasted the album artwork into photoshop and did a color reverse on it. Looks pretty cool that way too. Anyway, I'm really liking the cover art. I'm wondering if that's a white coffin at the bottom of the grave or just a white backdrop indicating a doorway to the other side. Very cool cover indeed!

Posted by Dave @ 07/18/2008 06:49 AM EST

Thingy, I agree, that angel should have been the cover of st. anger, not that fist and ugly coloring. I like this cover, it doesn't blow me away, but it's cool in a simplistic way. I don't recall the reaction to TBA's cover, but it doesn't get much more bland than that. The content on the record will make most of us like/dislike the cover more.

Posted by Kurt @ 07/18/2008 09:08 AM EST

I scanned the Metboards last night and the thing was full of Photoshopped photos of the album (http://www.famousjames.com/deathmagnetic.jpg). I saw a lot of inverted colors for the new album that looked pretty cool, too. More on the Metboard than here, but everyone has their opinions of what MetallicA should do and all that stuff can get a little annoying, but mainly, a lot of people are excited, which is really cool. It's still a long wait 'til September! http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/metallica_some_kind_of_monster.jpg

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/18/2008 09:40 AM EST

Dave, come on,..its a magnet shaped like a coffin.

why are people having so much trouble figuring this out..

Posted by Tony @ 07/18/2008 10:44 AM EST

I don't think it is Pusheads work. It kinda lacks the artistic touch of a real heavy metal album cover. LOook at Megadeths, Iron Maiden albums, they all have a story to tell. The coffin with bits of magnet does not tell you a complete story about the album itself. If I was to walk in a record store, I would definatly miss out over this album.

Posted by Bond @ 07/18/2008 11:55 AM EST

the only problem i have with the album cover is the fact that they dont dig holes in the ground in the shape of a coffin.

Posted by sean @ 07/18/2008 12:41 PM EST

Bond, you have a point, but look at all the album covers since TBA, and even KEA. They were all pretty basic. None of them had the artistry of megadeth or maiden's typical covers. For that matter, few bands come close to maiden as far as covers go. Of course all the deathmetal bands have all the really gorey shit, but the content sucks so who cares?

Posted by kurt @ 07/18/2008 01:32 PM EST

Nice couple of FOTW clips today. Kirk hitting the solo on the song we've already heard bits of(the ringtone song I think). The longer clip was james riffing pretty nicely.

Posted by kurt @ 07/18/2008 02:41 PM EST

Kirk's solo on today's FOTW definitely sounds like the part for the DM trailer right before the "Bow Down" part. Too bad I'm still too cheap to hear James' riffing today.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/18/2008 03:52 PM EST

The doorway to the other side aspect is cool. And I really like the open door-coffin shape. Yeah, it does look a little simplistic, but the pic does fit the album title very nicely. I'm really curious about song titles now. I wonder if Death Magnetic will be a title. If it is, I'll bet it's track #2. Anyway, really liking Kirk's solo on the new FOTW. Kick ass!

Posted by Dave @ 07/18/2008 06:53 PM EST

Dave you're right on the money. There's never been a title track that wasn't track #2.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/18/2008 06:56 PM EST

To release that type of art cover and a special coffin box set for a simple album, they must be sure to have a really good one! I'm sure they do...

Posted by Bleeding @ 07/18/2008 07:30 PM EST

New artwork is pretty sweet but there's way too much white space. Best since AJFA, though; I think it's pretty damn solid overall.

Posted by caspian @ 07/18/2008 08:24 PM EST

okay, in these FOTW videos, who's this guy in everyone one pretty much producing the album with all the different band members??? I thought Rubin was supposed to be the guy doing all that stuff... is that Rubin's sidekick or something?

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/18/2008 08:42 PM EST

Not sure who that guy is. Maybe an engineer? But I'm clueless when it comes to producing this album and who is involved except for Metallica and Rick Rubin. Yeah he is in the videos quite a bit. Rubin is off camera in some of the stuff though, like the Holy revolver clip. Hey, does anyone know if Remember Tomorrow is tuned down half a step or standard? Regardless, it sounds great!

Posted by Dave @ 07/18/2008 09:19 PM EST

To recite the crap that we've all read: Rick isn't an engineer and doesn't know how to run the board, he just knows what he likes. The guy in the clips appears to be his engineer, the guy who does know how to get what Rick is looking for by tweaking the knobs (and fixing the knobs after Lars f's with them.) Sounds like he's been used before, so I could probably find the answer by getting out a Slipknot or Slayer cd, but I'm lazy.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/18/2008 11:15 PM EST

Another two cents worth, because I think the cover art is amazing for me and it's my favorite MetallicA album cover. When looking at the cover art, my eye's are first drawn towards the white coffin before anything else, it's the focal point. The coffin is a magnet for my eyes, I'll explain. My eyes are magnetically pulled towards the coffin (if you know what I mean) because of how visually powerful the thought of dying is and not being alive anymore. The coffin resembles death and for me, that triggers a powerful, yet sad, empty and frightening feeling inside. Death is magnetic for us all and I don't know about you, but that scare's the shit out of me. Death doesn't give you a second chance, death is final. In the end, death triumphs over life. The album cover isn't all doom and gloom though, there's a positive spin, too. It could also mean that death may not be the end for us, just the end of our human form and the coffin is actually a doorway of white light that leads to the spiritual land. Hence, the afterlife. There very well could be life after death on the other side. Death is not the end.

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 07/19/2008 12:39 AM EST

Remember Tommorow is Eb tuned again!Great cover. The only weak point in my opinion is Lars' fills. He is using the snare A LOT!

Posted by JESIUS @ 07/19/2008 03:11 AM EST

I liked Remember Tomorrow a lot!!! They should play it live right now!!!

Posted by Dan @ 07/19/2008 08:37 AM EST

So basically this record sounds like it will also be a return to the concept album. Most if not all songs will have death as part of the subject matter??

Posted by manguy @ 07/19/2008 11:10 AM EST

I think the new cover art is quite fitting. why does a metal album have to have skulls, demons, angels, etc. Over at blabbermouth people are so quick to bash it. Its amazing how many people are hoping they fail. Even if this album is great, there will be many in denial. sickening.

Posted by smakdis @ 07/19/2008 03:38 PM EST

Posted by JobaJeter @ 07/19/2008 07:08 PM EST

Okay, am I the only one on this board that thinks "Remember Tomorrow" is kinda boring? Just don't think it's all that great of a song. Maybe that's why I never really liked Iron Maiden in the first place... but I would be disapointed if Death Magnetic was the same.

I got an idea, how about you guys give us some music you made.. or I'll tell ya what, you have like a few weeks to get some tracks down, because my cd is in the process of mixing, so i'd hate to call you guys out without anything to show. 3 weeks, and we'll all put what we have on the table.. to see if anyone really has the slightest clue what they're talking about..

Posted by Tony @ 07/20/2008 12:17 PM EST

I really like the "remember tomorrow" song but like other have said, i guess more effort could have been put on the drums. I like all the snear fills that lars is doing, but listening to the original version reminded me that drums fills where better and there was a better variety of symbals sounds. Tony i get your point, i'm not a drum player (i'm trying since 3 days...) but i'm listening to music almost since i'm born and i can be objective, even if Metallica is part of my life like no other band, and it's that i think that give me or give us the right to critic their music. Because we can find other musicians with great tallent that are doing different things as good, better or weaker thant our 4 hourseman! It's what makes my music taste evolve. But i like your idea to listen, (for fun)of what some of you can do!

Posted by Bleeding @ 07/20/2008 12:40 PM EST

You know what, listening to some recently added FOTW changeed my point of view. Metallica put so many hours sorting whats good or not in their music that i guess the song "Remember Tomorrow" is exactly sounding how they wanted to.

Remember tomorrow is amazing and the cover art rocks!! stop bitchin already.. all we need is a single!

Posted by fingerprint @ 07/20/2008 05:43 PM EST

What's the bitching for? It's a cover, who cares....

Posted by Nick @ 07/20/2008 05:46 PM EST

lol tony got pist. i was just giving my opinion but if ya really wanna call me out..i do everything from hip-hop,remixes,metal..whatever you wanna hear...but i guess ill keep it metal..i play guitar a tiny tiny bit so let me know when your cd comes out.ill show ya a few chords

Hey Tony, not that I'm claiming to be a professional at all, but I play guitar, bass and drums as well as some keyboards and I sing as well. I'm definitely no one-man-Metallica, but I am in the process of negotiating with a record producer to record my first EP. So, you want cards on the table, here is a link to the shitty demos that I have recorded at home on my shitty 4-track. http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/615552

No previous experience with recording. No help. No other musicians. Just me. Now, let's see what you've got...

A message and reminder to all my MetallicA brothers and sisters out there which I also think coincides with MetallicA's cover art for "Death Magnetic". Smile more, argue less and laugh alot. Make the best of the time you have left on earth in human form. We're all being pulled closer to death's magnetic grip every minute. We're all dying and we're all going to be dead someday, not all at once of cousre, unless we're talking planetary suicide. Like I've already mentioned and you already know, death is magnetic and is waiting for each and every one of us. Bare in mind though, death is not the end, it's the beginning. Your life on earth as a human will be short, but your death will be forever...

Posted by One Minute Closer To Death... @ 07/21/2008 12:10 AM EST

and I want Metallica to remember that we need that album now! Minutes, days, weeks, months and years closer to death since the last album...

Well, my two cents on remember tomorow is that it's OK. I think the boys did a fine job with it, but I never thought much of the song when Maiden did it, and I still don't now. I could easily list 20-25 maiden songs I would prefer them to cover(the song Killers could have been awesome). But like someone said above, who the hell cares? It a cover song on a tribute record. I've played it a few times(here at work on the computer), and I'll listen to it again, but I don't love it.

Posted by kurt @ 07/21/2008 09:31 AM EST

I've been looking for Kerrang at Barnes & Noble and Borders in the Chicago suburbs and can't find the thing. I wonder if the boys will release it later on.

Anybody recognize the little clean bit James plays at the end of todays free FOTW? I think he was playing that bit on the '07 Sick.. Tour on acoustic before he started the into to Unforgiven.

Posted by EET FUK @ 07/21/2008 11:38 AM EST

This is what I got as far as a recording of my haggard geetar playing.

http://www.myspace.com/blacier

First riff thing is mine, then that's me playing rhythm on the second part, then a little drunken jam I had and happened to record (lots of screw ups in it) then the last thing is my buddies little diddle that he does.

Oh yeah, that's me with the Explorer... :) And just ignore the wifebeaters... lol

I have hours of recorded crap but most of it is Metallica riffs and me messing with track layering rather than actual original music.

This is my rock band from high school. We played for about 5 years and then everyone went to college. Anyways, I have other stuff that isn't finished as well with a few different people that I will post one of these days if it gets finished.

Sort of unrelated, but did any one catch Megadeath on Affliction the other night? They really, really sucked. The venue didn't help but they completely stunk up the place...including the worst vocals I have heard live since listening to my drunk friend Bob sing enter sandman down at karaoke night at the strip club. thank god dave mustaine was kicked out of metallica.

Posted by megadeath sucks @ 07/21/2008 04:33 PM EST

Completely off-topic, and I apologize right now for it...

Everyone here... Go see The Dark Knight. Holy shit that movie is so good! I thought there was no way it could live up to the hype and my own expectations. I walked out of the movie theater feeling so good about the film... it was smart, artsy, philosophical, action-packed, deep, emotional ....

Anyway, I just needed to get that out there. Thought you guys might like to catch it sometime!

Posted by Tipper @ 07/21/2008 11:56 PM EST

Yeah, I saw it too. Awesome. Heath Ledger plays one evil motherfucker.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 07/22/2008 12:13 AM EST

I saw the movie Friday and liked it a lot. I was thinking of getting the soundtrack.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/22/2008 01:32 AM EST

Yeah, I never thought Ledger could possibly live up to that hyper either, but he played that psycho clown to the hilt! I was really impressed with that whole movie, and I was overly impressed with Batman Begins... this one came out swinging.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/22/2008 11:04 AM EST

Fotw's for today: When did the guys in Metallica learn to play fast? The clip of Kirk is an evil tease, because they know we want to hear that whole passage. Other Fotw shows that they are in the studio working on the fast section from New Song #1, so it's pretty apparent that the fast part (which was the best) is the part of the song that survived the editing process. I hope not too much more of it got in. Gonna be weird to hear that riff put into a completely different structure after over 2 years of having access to New Song 1.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/22/2008 12:21 PM EST

Yes, that was a hell of a tease with Kirk. Regarding batman, I have held off on seeing it till this weekend cause I want to take my son(yes, I'm an older prick-36). Anyways, my question is: is it to scary for an 8 1/2 year old? I have heard nothing but great reviews, but I don't want my little guy shitting his pants. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Posted by kurt @ 07/22/2008 01:14 PM EST

kurt, did you take him to see The Incredible Hulk? If so, I'd be a little more concerend about that compared to Batman. I think you might be okay with Batman other than the face on Two-Face. These free FOTW videos are cool, but I really need to break down and join Metclub again. It's been around 8 years or so since I was in it.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/22/2008 02:54 PM EST

Yeah, I agree that the Two-Face makeup/effect might scare the bejeezus out of a kid. Think of the dead guy in American Werewolf in London. Burned rotting flesh and exposed bone is good stuff.

Posted by Azrael @ 07/22/2008 03:08 PM EST

Yeah, I took him to the hulk and he was alright. He thought Abomination looked cool. I took him to Iron Man, along with my nephew, and had to come up with a quick explanation about the strippers and stipper pole on Tony Stark's plane. I'm also gonna have to come up with an explanation(bs of course) for a condom once he plays the Aerosmith guitar hero(thanks to Steven Tyler). He's been out of town the last three weeks and can't wait to play the game, so I know he's gonna see the comment. All in all, I'm loving all the superhero movies, cause I'm gettin to relive the youth with my kids(I had a huge comic collection until my heroin addicted uncle sold em all for $$ for smack). We'll be checking out the Clone Wars movie for certain.

Posted by kurt @ 07/22/2008 04:00 PM EST

As long as u explain everything to him and the message the movie is trying to get across, I think he will b fine. Best movie of the year!

Posted by Nick @ 07/22/2008 05:06 PM EST

Kurt, I wouldn't be too concerned about the two-face make up bit, you know as well as I do that kids are very de-sensitised to that kind of shit these days. I would be more concerned about the psychotic, psychological side of the Joker character. He is very dark and very disturbed. Great movie, but I would think twice about taking an 8 year old to see it. Up to you though.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 07/22/2008 06:06 PM EST

I forgot about when the Joker explains how he got the "smile" on his face. That might be a little too much for your son, kurt. Like Harvester said, up to you. Did anyone see The Strangers when that came out? My girlfriend freaked out big time when I took her to it!

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/22/2008 07:38 PM EST

which is the better superhero movie of the year: Iron Man vs Dark Knight??????? It's VERY close in my eyes... yes both very different from each other...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 07/22/2008 08:00 PM EST

The Jokers twisted side came out when he explained how he got the scars on his face. He explained it twice and they were both totally different stories. That movie was great, and I did not think it would live up to Batman Begins, but it kicked its ass. The two things I was looking forward to this year was the dark knight and new metallica. dark knight lived up to its hype, i sure hope death magnetic will to, but i am sure it will. X Files next week, what a great year this is for entertainment.

Posted by Robert @ 07/22/2008 09:08 PM EST

Dark Knight wins comic book flick of the year.... (so far). Iron Man is a perfect comic book kinda movie, but DK takes it a step further.... it's the perfect supervillan movie. ...and I hated Batman Begins, and there's still many flaws in DK. I think the Joker's twisted side came out when he made the pencil disappear... and I think it went that much further when he burned the money and then threatened to kill the guy if he revealed Bat's identity.... good movie coulda been better if they'd have shaved another 15 minutes from it.

Posted by IS-JD @ 07/22/2008 11:50 PM EST

Yeah, Harvester nailed my only worry about the movie being appropriate. The Joker's psyche is borderline too-violent for kids.

I mean, I know he's SUPPOSED to be psychotic, but he might be a little much for kids. I know he almost scared me and I'm in my late 20's.

I watched The Strangers and thought it was great too. Iron Man was good as well.

Posted by Tipper @ 07/23/2008 12:10 AM EST

You guys are making me want to go see the Dark Knight again! I liked all of the superhero movies so far this year (Hulk, Iron Man and DK). The Strangers is cool because it's out in the country and it could really happen again, since it's based on true events. It messes with your head! I'd be a little freaked out if someone knocked on my door @ 4 AM and I'm 33! I think I'll see Step Brothers next. Listened to some Don't you think this outlaw bit has done got out of hand tonight.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/23/2008 12:58 AM EST

Those movies might be better as far as special effects go, but for sheer spine-chilling creepiness, you just can't beat some of the good Aussie movies that have come out over the last few years, like the SAW series or the very scary Wolf Creek.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 07/23/2008 01:26 AM EST

JD-I know what you mean about shaving some time off the movie, I loved the movie, but felt that after 1:45 or so, there were many fitting endings that could have occured without extending the movie to over two and a half hours. I found this to be the ultimate super hero movie (even though I'm a die hard Superman fan.) When I heard Christopher Nolan was involved in the new Batman series I was hoping that they would be similar to the graphic novels and not the campiness of the movies that almost killed Batman. I should point out that my distaste for the length of the film is not entirely about the movie but my dislike for sitting in a theater for three hours. Back problems at the ripe age of 30, lol.

It's a tough call with Bill(the 8yoa in question). He has seen most of the superhero movies with no problems, has walked in on me watching some horror suspense things at home and not been bothered. Yet he had a nightmare about friggin Plankton from one of the Spongebob video games and didn't want to sleep alone in his room for months. Very strange. I'll probably take him, but cover his eyes if something looks too creepy(I did that for Revenge of the Sith when vader got chopped up, but now on dvd he loves that part). Anyways, blabbermouth is reporting a setlist for DM. Some of the titles sound familiar, but there is an Unforgiven III. That makes me think it's BS, cause I can't imagine they'd do that.

Posted by kurt @ 07/23/2008 10:35 AM EST

BTW, thanks for the input from some of you guys. I know this is a metallica site, but I appreciate that we can go off into some other topics.

Unforgiven III. I can't wait.

Track listing is on Metallica.com

Posted by Tim @ 07/23/2008 12:12 PM EST

Whoa, they just released the tracklist and Unforgiven III is on it. Now I wasn't a huge unforgiven2 fan, so whatever this song is, I hope to not have another chorus with the word unforgiven in it. I am totally cool with the theme of it, and I would have liked Unforgiven2 better had it not said the actual words "unforgiven too" in it. I thought it was too contrived. However, there aren't multiple meanings/spellings to 3, so that shouldn't be the case.

Posted by kurt @ 07/23/2008 12:50 PM EST

the unforgiven III?? holy shit? i dont know about that

Posted by xino @ 07/23/2008 12:54 PM EST

I wonder if Unforgiven III will be an instrumental. Hmmm...time will tell. Hunt you down all nightmare long! I'm wondering if we'll hear some snippets of a new song at Ozzfest.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 07/23/2008 01:00 PM EST

Those titles sound awesome. I think the Unforgiven III will be the one with the FOTW video of james singing..."when the sun goes hellbound...and the moon resurrects the night". or maybe not...it might be a fuking heavy fast crazy song to finish the trilogy?! anyways, I love the titles and yes the drak night was amazing.....iron man and hulk were great too........anyone see hellboy II?

Posted by MONSTER @ 07/23/2008 01:26 PM EST

I agree with almost everyone, this song titles are amazing. But I'll have to agree with Kurt: Unforgiven III, WTF???

Posted by EPDA @ 07/23/2008 01:45 PM EST

Agreeing with Kurt and EPDA, i am a bit sketchy on Unforgiven III. Interesting song titles though.

Posted by The Dude @ 07/23/2008 01:58 PM EST

"Could you be there, cause I'm the one who waits for you. Or are you Unforgiven 12?"

Posted by manguy @ 07/23/2008 02:51 PM EST

the whole concept of Unforgiven can never get old.. It's just something that never goes away and something everyone I think is going through....

so that's why i'm accepting of it
