06/17/2008 Entry: "METALLICA'S SECRET PRE-BONNAROO SHINDIG"
So I read that Metallica were going to have a secret Pre-Bonnaroo shindig around 4:00 PM on Thursday in Nashville somewhere – and that the MetClub was having a contest that clubbers could enter, and if chosen would be a part of this shindig, whatever it was. MissionMetallica.com had a contest to attend the same shindig. Well, I didn’t win anything, but if Metallica were going to be doing something 15 minutes from my house, I had to at least try and see them/sneak in/be part of the event.
I remembered that they did an in-store signing/meet-n-greet for Record Store Day a few months back, in California, and figured they weren’t going to play/show up at some bar/club for this special shindig, so it had to be somewhere cool, private, and secure. So I did a little searching and found this among the list of record shops was this place called Grimey’s, in Nashville. I checked out the place online and it looked similar to the record shop in California. So I did a little more investigating. I called this record shop and tried to smooth talk the person on the phone, but they yielded no helpful information. So I skipped my lunch break and left work at 4:00, an hour early, threw on my “Young Metal Attack” Metallica shirt and drove to this record shop, still not certain of anything. I drove by the front of the store and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. Took a right past the shop and headed down a side road and low and behold.....black tour buses. Jackpot! So now I had to figure out what to do next. What do I say and to whom do I say it – two very important questions when you are trying to get into an event where you aren't on the list. So I walk in the front door and up to the guy behind the counter. I say to him, “So I guess I'm in the right place?” And he says, “By the looks of your shirt, you’re in the right place. Go out the back door and down the stairs.” So I walk outside to a group of people standing around and I assume they are MetClubbers. I lean against the railing and some guy tells me, “End of the line is over there!” Jeez, already getting hassled. Looking around there are road cases which means one thing – Live Show. So I sit around for a little while longer thinking of what I should do next - who can I talk to that could get me into the show. Just because I am outside with a crowd, near the event, doesn’t mean I will get to see "The Boys" in action. So I finally find someone that looks like they can help me out and after chatting for a bit, I nonchalantly say something about the MetClub winners and how I could be one their guests if any of them were solo…..so he says, “well....., hang on, I can’t promise anything and don’t get your hopes up….but hang on……”, so he comes back a few minutes later and tells me that I can walk in with the MetClub winners when they get to the record shop (the 12 winners + guests were meeting each other off site). So all is good, I met up with some of the other Clubbers, and got inside the venue and near the stage around 7:00. The Four Horsemen come out a few minutes later and blitz into No Remorse, which was a cool track to start off the set. They played it really fast. The solos sounded complete. Fuel was next and is a really good live song - very fast and furious. Harvester, Sanitarium, and Bellz are next. Harvester was really heavy. After Bellz, they jam on a few riffs from 2x4, a Mercyful Fate medley, and long a jam of Frayed Ends of Sanity - really cool. Kirk blew out his amp after Bellz and the roadie had to replace it. Jaymz said he forgot how hot it was in Tennessee - everyone was sweating. Master of Puppets and Sad But True were next. I keep yelling for Leper Messiah, Orion, and TUI, but they weren’t listening. After MOP, this guy in the front, who was blocking my camera view the whole night, passed out from the heat and security took him out of there. YES!! Then I got to move a lot closer, which was cool. Then they ripped into Motorbreath which was a nice surprise and sounded really tight. They closed with Seek and Destroy. No surprise, but lots of singing by the crowd. They thanked everyone for coming and bragged about how much they liked the intimacy of playing in such a small place. It reminded them of the old days. Lars thanked everyone and said they would be back in October with a new album and tour. The overall sound was really good and I could hear plenty of guitar, bass, and drums. It was also my first time to ever wear ear plugs at a Metallica show, but I had to. The speakers were right above me and it was crazy loud. I ended up getting about 15 guitar picks and gave Hetfield a pat on the shoulder and got a high five from Rob. They left and got on the tour bus and everyone filtered outside. There were around 150 people at the show, some hanging around outside during the show because they couldn’t get in. All in all it was the coolest Metallica experience I'd ever had. And to think just a few hours earlier I had no idea where to go or how the night would end - but it turned out perfect.

Good stuff. Anyone hear the MM vid from yesterday??? F***ING SWEET!!!! It's the one with Q Prime listening to a part of a demo. The demo is kick ass!! Very old school Metallica, but with a new twist and a touch of Garage Inc.

General, you are a fucking legend! I wish that Metallica would come and play in a fucking record store here in Australia. Still no hints of new tracks, by the sound of it. But, what's this...???? Lars saying new album in October? What happened to September?

FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! I need to hear just ONE NEW METALLICA SONG! I am going out of my fucking mind. I'd REALLY like to hear the one code-named Flamingo, as I think thats the one that is supposedly like a modern-day One. But I'll take anything! Hell, one consecutive minute of a new song would make me happy. They can't possibly do this! Why are they torturing us like this?! What did we do to deserve this?!?! I am pretty sure this constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

They're doing it BECAUSE THEY CAN. The longer they take to record a new album and the more little snippets they give us to string us along, the more hungry we are for new material and therefore, the more records they sell.

cool thanx. Some of the people at the show kept saying that they were playing a new song and I just had to tell them that they were foolish. They are not going to debut a new song live. Anticipation is the name of the game. Yeah Lars DOES say that at every show, "We'll be back with a new album and tour." Maybe this time he means it.

how cool was that interview with Brian Slagel w/ Jaymz and Larz talking about Kill Em All? I didn't want that interview to end. Talking about going in to Larz' Dads meditation room, putting the mattresses up on the wall and writing Seek and Destroy. pretty cool

that is exactly the stuff I was hoping that Rob would bring into Metallica... just some really cool, new and fresh ideas. Rob is the shit!

yea finally rob not holding back..glad james started soaking that shit in and copying it because the most inspiring thing creatively for a musician is to watch another musician..especially if you're in a riff spell..playing the same shit over and over again..

Too fuckin right. I think they got a bit stale and starved for ideas for a while. A fresh injection of new blood, new ideas and new enthusiasm for the music is exactly what Metallica needed. Jason was awesome as a backup vocalist, but he pales in comparison to Rob as a bass player.

Jesus titty-fucking Christ! Rob can fuckin Jam! Jason Newsted was damn well intense and had a stock of talent, but Rob is definately showing Metallica that he deserves to be there and is just screaming talent! And yeah it does have a big 'God that Failed' feel to it (one of my top 5 favorite Metallica tunes of all time!)

Theres also a pretty decent interview with James and Lars on the 25th Anniversary of MEtal Up Your Ass (Kill'em All) on there, some cool anecdotes.. I got a laugh about the jamming at Ron McGovneys place... I wonder what he wound up doing? I think the link is found on the Blabbermouth news page. And it is, of course, followed with a pile of unwarranted Metalli-bashing. Maybe Metallica should be 4 Kerry Kings to satisfy those bean brains

if Jasonic was sitting in Rob's seat, we'd be hearing the same kind of bad ass shit. JN could play and had tons of ideas/riffs, but they never let him open up, or took him seriously. I am liking Rob more and more. he needs to get rid of that pippy longstocking hair though
Posted by The General @ 06/20/2008 07:47 AM EST

well if Jason did have the same ideas and stuff, how come we havn't heard a single thing from him since he left Metallica? Just that one Egobrain band, and they were lame.
Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 06/20/2008 10:01 AM EST

|
|
cuz he can't find a drummer like lars or a guitarist/singer like james to pound out the hits with. but that's not to say he didn't have good ideas...his ideas were kinda cool, from what i heard on misery and live solos... i'm actually kinda worried if they're going to use rob's ideas.. kirk's i can live with, but that's metallica to me....sometimes input from elsewhere just waters the music down and that true metallica of james and lars in the dungeon goes missing.

oh jason is great..great riffage, lots of energy, vocal harmonies, etc ..rob is technically better..if i wanted to hear the intro to seinfeld i would call rob..if i want to hear whiplash i call jason.

prob cause they are turning the bass up at the shows, lol. Jason sang whiplash as good as Hetfield. Sometimes I want to tell Rob that Metallica is not a nu-metal band so quit dancing around like a fairy so much.

Great fuckin' story General... you da man! I agree, if JN were the "newbie" he'd be getting these praises. I love Rob, but Jason is the Metallica I grew up with... Cliff died when I was in second grade. Jason Newsted has done a number of other projects that are as obscure as what Trujillo did before joining Metallica... don't knock Jason. If anyone has the right to feel bitter about our beloved Metallica it's him.

I think Rob is a beast and a welcomed addition to the band. I think he'll contribute quite a bit and I'm anxious to hear what he'll bring to the table. I just wonder how Mustaine can cry about not having Metallica's success after only playing for them for one year. Jason, on the other hand, played for them for 14 years and you don't hear him cryin'. I wonder what Jason's doing nowadays.

ATTENTION EVERYONE!!!! Ok... call me CRAZY, but I am almost positive I heard Lars say in the latest MM vid there is an INSTRUMENTAL!!!! He says something like.. lets get the instrumental out of the way or something like that... Hell yes! O and not to mention the other vid had some sweet ass riffage!
Posted by Nick @ 06/21/2008 02:18 AM EST

Jason had some good points. He could sing and he was an ok bass player. But, Rob is an animal. He's a freak on the bass and he is very similar to Cliff in style. Regardless of who thinks who is better, the fact remains that Rob has had no small part in helping to steer Metallica back on to the road that they once travelled. So if they put something out that resembles master of puppets, then Rob has had a hand in it. And for one, I welcome any influence that brings them out of the fucked-up nineties Metallica and back to the glory days of 80's thrash-metal kings.

Nick, I heard that too....I really hope it's true and if so , that's not the song 11th sond that they cut out from the album. That would be fuckin killer if they have an instrumental on the album. Maybe they've been hearng us ask for one for years now. Also, I loved Jason, but I think Rob is way better. I was s happy when heard that he was now in Metallica since I liked him with Ozzy, Cantrell & Zakk. He does seem to have a big influence on the band make them wanna play better.

i thought i heard that the new single will be at radio stations sometime in august. if so we should be getting a tracklist soon. MM isnt that bad - at least some of the clips are long......and Larz did say 'instrumental' but he was most likely blowing smoke for the camera. but you never know.

I really think there will be an instrumental.. I really do. I am actually liking the amount of riffs they give on MM. It isn't a lot and is why most people bitch, but I want to be surprised when the album comes out... anyways I thought the last few videos have been really good.

so far my fav video from MM is the one with Rob playing the "flamingo" style music, just watching him and and seeing the other guys brainstorming off of it, that's the type of shit I hoped to see from that site. I also have to agree with the General, it's frustrating to just hear the last couple seconds of a riff here and there, but if we did get the whole thing... we would play it until we were sick of it, then what when the album comes out?

oh! and I do hope they are keeping some good clips for a later vdv release because I would love to see them do kinda the same thing as the SKOM movie. Where you can watch them talking on the phone with a record label exec and hear James getting mad and say "wash your back so you won't stab mine". HOW COOL IS THAT?
