Someone has to edit the name of the post to get the spelling right......just a thought.
I run a spell-check business on the side...

Cable was out last night from a storm, so I put in Some Kind of Monster.
I'm playing the Death Magnetic clip more and more. I think it kind of has a cool marching sound to it.

I like it. If you think about the name a little bit, then it requires more and more thinking, but that name and how we hear and interpret that name will be 100% dependent on what we get with the songs. A lot of times words don't even have a meaning, but rather an overall vibe associated with them, especially when it comes to music. When you hear the words Master of Puppets, you probably see red (from the album cover) and think of the heaviness, melody, and intricacy of that record, rather than think literally of what a master of puppets looks like, or even means.

You could call the new album "Diet Pepsi Smells Funny" and I wouldn't care. It's the music that makes the album, not the name.
D-J has it right. You think of the music, not the name. Although with the name I suggested above, you would think it was awfully stupid if it was the actual name. And then you would remember the music was good.

its a weird name...english isn't my first language so maybe there is something im missing? but it sounds ok
Posted by xino @ 06/16/2008 04:38 PM EST
I'm sure most people thought "Kill 'em All" and "...and Justice For All" where silly names for an album when they first heard it... now we don't even think twice about it. My only dislike about it is that it sounds a bit too gothy... anything with DEATH in the title will come off that way.
Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 06/16/2008 05:56 PM EST
just call it Metal up your ass.
Posted by fanin @ 06/16/2008 06:47 PM EST
Fanin just had the best idea ever. Man that would have been cool. And they probably could have named it that now, too. We should start a petition for them to rename it that before they start getting these mass-produced with the original name on it.
Posted by D-J @ 06/16/2008 07:07 PM EST
I don't reckon. The fact that Metallica were not allowed to call their first album "Metal up your Ass" has led to the catch-cry "Metal up your Ass" becoming a "Fuck-you" to the record companies and commercial music industry over the years. If they called an album "Metal up your Ass" now, it would almost sell out the entire meaning behind the catch-cry, as in essence, the record companies would have endorsed it and it would no longer be a rebellious "fuck-you". I would prefer to have Jaymz chanting "Metal up your Ass" and about 10,000 Metallifux screaming it back at him, with devil horns raised. Fuck yeah!!!!!

Bring on Death Magnetic! Some kick-ass old school artwork like on Ride - Justice... or Pushead's work... or how about a pushead skull being torn apart at the skull. ???

The album name is awful, but as long as the music's as good as anything pre-St. I really won't care. I do have to wonder what they were thinking, though. Surely at least someone told them "hey guys that's not a very good album name"?
Posted by caspian @ 06/16/2008 08:48 PM EST
It's better than Load, Re-load or St. Anger. I think they lost a bit of imagination with album titles when they just decided to just call the black album "Metallica".
Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 06/16/2008 08:59 PM EST
could of named it Death MagneticA.

The title sounds kinda corny to me.
At least they aren't Iron Maiden who like to name everything with the word 'death' in it: live after death, matter of life and death, dance of death, etc.
I just think using the word 'death' in the title sounds kinda desperate to be 'cool' but I dunno... I'll judge it by the music. Hell, I even liked Load and Re-Load. lol. The music that is... not the titles.
I think all the album titles they have come up with are good except Re-Load and St Anger. This one is good too. The music is what really matters though.

If you think about it...it would fit perfectly along with the first 4 albums....
Kill Em All Ride the Lightning Master of Puppets And Justice for All Death Magnetic
Kinda an old skool tone to the title. I like it.
Posted by Noisyone @ 06/16/2008 11:16 PM EST
absolutely nothing wrong with this title. it has a cool ring to it. plus its not really the words "master of puppets" or "ride the lightning" that we all think are kick-ass, its that we associate these words with the kick-ass music on those albums. words are words. doesn't really matter all that much as long as the music rocks!

I'm not gonna lie or candy coat it... I'm not a fan of this album title.
Yet.

Perfect album title. Very dark and very real. Death is like a magnet, we're all being pulled closer to it every minute...no one get's out of here alive. In the end, Death will greet us all...make the best of your life here on earth. Life is a gift, celebrate it each and every day your alive. I'm wishing all you Metallica brothers and sisters well. Metallica is the greatest band, I love all the albums and I am very much looking forward to hearing "Death Magnetic"! See you all on the otherside, it's the inevitable...death is magnetic...

I have to agree with Scott. I remember the first time I saw the title of Master of Puppets, I was thinking "What the fuck is this...???". But the music kicked arse and it's become a classic. Probably their definitive album. So, let's not be too harsh on the album title, just yet. Let's wait to hear what the album is like and then the title "Death Magnetic" may have a different effect on our collective psyches.

Some people dont like but imagine if today they came out the title Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets or And Justice For All....They would be bashed beyond belief. It will have more meaning after you hear the music.
Posted by Mark @ 06/17/2008 11:00 AM EST
I kinda hate the name right now, but I'm sure in time it will grow on me. Either way, it's what's on the album that counts, not what it's named. It could be called "Papa Het's Super Metal Funtime Extravaganza" and I would still buy it.

"Death Magnetic" is original. The album title is a huge dose of reality and reminder, that life is short. Whether your living as a king or as peasant or living a clean and sober life or not, in the end, all roads lead to death for us all. One way or another, we all die. We're no match for death's magnetic pull...death wins every time. Metallica brothers and sisters, take care and make the best of the life your living. Life on earth is a gift....celebrate it....with Metallica.

i think metallica have done their best work already, the new stuff after garage days, is lame, lack of creativity, but im a really big fan so i have to listen everything they do and give him a chance, but with this tune, my biggest fear is almos confirmed, its a second part of the ugliest metallica album, ST Anger. luv metallica but their biggest talent is gone, creativity, experimentation, and do different things whit rock, black album, master, kill em all, ride, and justicie, load ,reload, garage days, al those records are great, with all the things that they dont wanna do anymore, the results are St. Anger and this new shit.....im very sad for this music...
