06/12/2008 Entry: "BLOGGALLICA"
In the midst of potential PR disaster that included stories throughout the internet and in mainstream press (including but not limited to: G4, Dagbladet, Wired, C Net, Digg, Phoenix New Times, Tech Digest, Idolator, Fark, Ars Technica). The band has taken mattters into their own hands and has brought up the matter of having blogged reviews pulled from the 'net.
From Metallica.com:
However, once we re-surfaced on Tuesday after a few weeks on tour in Europe, we were informed that someone at Q Prime (our managers) had made the error of asking a few publications to take down reviews of the rough mixes from the new record that were posted on their sites. Our response was "WHY?!!! Why take down mostly positive reviews of the new material and prevent people from getting psyched about the next record. . . that makes no sense to us!" So after a few rounds of managerial ear spank and sentencing everyone at Q Prime to 20 push-ups each, we figured why not take matters into our own hands and just post the links here on our site. And as promised the In The Press area of met.com has been updated with those updates.

By the by, I see MM has more letters in the mystery ???. I think the 2 symbols on the ends are just that symbols, almost looking like "U" shaped magnets, with the electrical M's

Hmmm..... the plot thickens!!!! It's gone from being (D)EI(C) - if the first and last symbols are actually letters - to (D)EETI(C), so, following the pattern, the next reveal should be something like (D)EE_ _TI(C). WTF???? indeed.

Metallica: Still Heavy After All These Years Band returns to speed metal on new disc with Rick Rubin DAVID FRICKE
This is the advice producer Rick Rubin gave Metallica over two years ago, as the band knuckled down to write its next album: "I said, 'Imagine you're not Metallica,' " Rubin recalls. " 'You don't have any hits to play, and you have to come up with material to play in a battle of the bands. What do you sound like?' " "It was the obvious thing — that we didn't see," says singer-guitarist James Hetfield. Rubin, a longtime friend and fan who was producing a Metallica album for the first time, "gave it a focus, instantly, with that statement."
Set for a September release on Warner Bros., Metallica's still-untitled new album is their first since 2003's St. Anger and their first with bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined in February of that year. It is also a stunning, overdue return to the shock and rush of the band's speed-metal monuments, 1984's Ride the Lightning and 1986's Master of Puppets. The 10 long tracks are all multi-riff blizzards with jolting rhythm swerves, while lead guitarist Kirk Hammett makes up for the no-solos asceticism of St. Anger with vintage bursts of cackling-hyena wah-wah.
"Rick said he wanted to make the definitive Metallica record," says drummer Lars Ulrich, "a step forward that incorporated elements from what he considered our creative peak. Every time there was a fork in the road, we said, 'In 1985, we would have done this.' " One song illustrates Hetfield's lyric hook "Hunt you down all nightmare long" (there are no formal song titles yet) with vicious-staccato guitar riddled with tempo U-turns and Ulrich's double-kick-drum thunderclaps.
Another combines a hard-funk chorus, jarring tempo collisions and a reflective, growling Hetfield ("Suicide, I've already died/It's just the funeral I'm waiting for"). A third song recalls Metallica's 1988 riff avalanche, . . . And Justice for All, but with a steady conqueror's-march beat. "What don't kill ya makes ya more strong," Hetfield sings on that track — and he says he believes it: "It feels like old Metallica to me, but with more meaning now."
Metallica are a changed band from the one that went through group therapy and nearly broke up while making St. Anger, a weirdness captured in the documentary Some Kind of Monster. "I was nervous because of what I saw in that movie," Rubin confesses. "But I found a unified force that had come to terms with all of the stuff that got dredged up." Hetfield, who went into rehab during the St. Anger sessions, remains on "the clean-and-sober path," as he puts it. And Metallica worked on the new album in bursts of several weeks to minimize time away from their families (all four band members are now fathers). "Making records in the Nineties wasn't a lot of fun," Ulrich says. "On this one, we made ourselves a promise: to have as civil an experience as possible." They started, as usual, with the so-called "riff tapes" — licks and ideas from individual members or recorded during the group's tuning-room jams backstage, then sorted into songs mostly by Hetfield and Ulrich, Metallica's primary writers since they started the band in 1981. It took the quartet all of 2006 to hone hundreds of riff tapes into 26 songs, then pick the half worth recording. Rubin visited Metallica at their San Rafael, California, studio every few weeks to listen to what was working and tell the group what wasn't. "There was so much material," Hammett says, "that James and I regularly had to ask each other, 'Which title was this riff going to?' Riffs moved all over the place."
But when Metallica set up at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, in March and April 2007 to record basic tracks, the band cut everything live, in straight-through takes. "Rick wasn't interested in whether we played the songs perfectly," Ulrich says. "He cared about whether we played together or not. He would say, 'You guys are on fire.' Or 'You guys suck. If you don't get it together in the next two takes, go home.' "
Hetfield finally started recording vocals in February of this year. He says he is not yet sure what his lyrics are about — "The big picture doesn't become clear until a year or two later" — but knows what he's writing is very different from what he sang in mid-Eighties songs like "Damage, Inc." and "Whiplash." "Those things were mainly about playing live," Hetfield says. "Battery" [on Master of Puppets] was from my days on Battery Street [in San Francisco]." He then points to a new song, the frenetic "My Apocalypse." "It fits me now," he says, "whether it's the end of something for me or an end I see coming. I've got kids. I don't want that for them. The warrior aspect, to survive — I'm hooked into that right now."
After more than two years working on this record, Rubin has learned at least one lesson for the future. "There's no reason it can't be much faster," he says, laughing. "Before this one, my favorite Metallica records were the Garage records [the 1987 covers EP, Garage Days Re-revisited, and the expanded 1998 version, Garage Inc.]. They sound the most like a band, and those were made very quickly. That may be the next step we try."

I always said the stuff we heard so far had a little bit of a Garage Inc. vibe to it.

I agree with Ruin regarding doing the records faster. I'd like to see Metallica do what quite a lot of other bands do and only spend, say, 2 months in the studio (pretty sure most of their earlier records were done relatively quickly). That'd be quite interesting; surely some sort of pressure like that would be good.

Rob will get his respect on this album. This is a big thing that we haven't discussed on here. He has to be chomping at the bit to get his first record out.

METALLICA performed a "secret" show earlier tonight (Thursday, June 12) at The Basement in Nashville, Tennessee in front of an estimated 175 people.
The group's setlist was as follows:
01. No Remorse 02. Fuel 03. Harvester Of Sorrow 04. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 05. For Whom The Bell Tolls 06. Master Of Puppets 07. Sad But True 08. Motorbreath 09. Seek And Destroy
In addition, there were a few impromptu jams, including "2x4", "Slither" and "Frayed Ends of Sanity".

I was thinking the "symbol" is a radio tower and the N's are for Bonnaroo since they are written similar to the Bonnaroo logo. They are advertising it will be broadcast live and that new Metallica will be played. I think the words will "New Metallica" and the three ?'s are for New Metallica Song??? The letters for new metallica are there so far. Everyone concentrates on the letters being in the middle so far, but that could be to throw us off. Any thoughts?

Mark, thats a good theory. The only downside is that at the rate they are going for revealing new letters, the whole thing won't be spelled out until sometime next week, yet Metallica plays in mere hours!!! I REALLY hope they play something new tonight... Certainly not expecting it, but it would also up the anticipation as we would have to wait a whole month to see what they do next.

I'm hoping they pull out something special tonight. A new song is probably asking too much, but maybe they can do one of the early albums straight through, or pull out a few songs they haven't done in years, or this being the "jamming" festival, bring somebody else who's playing up on stage for a song or two. Or play a little longer than they have been. Or hell, just come out and start the set with Enter Sandman. I don't know what, exactly, just do something different than the fairly standard setlist that we've been seeing so far on this tour. Just a hope.

9pm central time, so I guess it will be 10pm est. They also have a link called the AT&T blue room on the left side that will take you to a live broadcast that's already going on right now, of course, right now, some bluegrass band is on. I know most of you guys may not be into that sort of thing, but I have watched a few of the earlier acts and I felt like my ears were raped earlier, so this bluegrass band is helping to repair the damage.

"DemonDiurectic" Nope. "Denostalgetic" Hmmm. Nope. Sorry kidz. The D and the C look like horseshoe magnets, someone thinks the M's look like magnetic flux, and yep, it's gonna be Demagnetic. Wheee. The good news is that we've got several months of further disappointments in creative direction to convince us that the album will suck and really drive our expectations down, at which point even a "just good" album will seem like a godsend. Liked some riffs on today's FotW vids, so I guess I shouldn't be so down on this process. I need to go freeze myself until the album comes out so I don't have to go through this anymore. Anyone know how to freeze-dry cheesy-poofs?

I loved that Esquire article! Metallica is not a Disney feel good, happy go lucky thing. They're bad asses... It's great if they kill Bonnaroo (which they won't) and they guy who wrote is probably pissed off at them because his girlfriend in highschool fucked a football player who listened to Damage Inc. to get fired up before a football game. I know Caspian named about a hundred "better" bands than Machine Head, if it weren't for Caspian they wouldn't have an album sold. Anyway, Rob Flynn posted a very cool diary about our beloved band... here's the link! http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=98934

"Death Magnetic"? You've got to be kidding me. I really hope that's the name of the single. Who picks these sort of names? Metallica were on a real role with album titles until St.; this one is probably their worst yet... to be honest I don't care that much, though; I'll take good songs over a good album name. Motorbreath: one day, when you're no longer 12 years old, I like to think that you'll understand that Machine Head aren't that good.

Songs make great albums, not titles. Demagnetic was gonna hurt a bit, I can live with this if the Title track rocks. Remember the first time you heard the St. Anger intro riff before we heard the production and the ridiculous repetitive thing and the inexplicably slow section? I was so stoked, then the song didn't live up to that intro. If it had, we'd all be talking about the follow up to the "great St. Anger." Death Magnetic it is. Ok. Now let's see what the music does to make that a great title.

Just checked out that riff...........fuckin awesome. It does sound a little like frayed ends with a bit of disposable heroes with chug part. I think its great and can't wait to hear more. If the rest of the songs have that sound & feel, then we're gonna get a great album. And if that's the abum title, i think it's cool too! Different than there other titles, but it definitely sounds metal. 3 months is a long time to wait to have the album in my hands but little pieces here & there and even a single soon should tie me over.

The way it makes sense is by Magnetic being a NOUN, not an ADJECTIVE.. so that a Death Magnetic is an actual thing.... it's not meant to describe death... GET IT?

The word Magnetic can't be used as a noun. It is an adjective. But it does make complete sense if you think of it as describing death as magnetic - i.e. especially with the substance abuse and subsequent rehab that Jaymz has just been through, would it not make complete sense that he can look back at that time in his life as being a magnet pulling him towards death...??? The feeling that I get from this album is that a lot of the material written by Jaymz will be very personal and based on his experiences and subsequent life changes. Therefore, does it not also make sense that the title of the album should reflect the same theme? Just my thoughts, anyway.

I reckon it's a kick-arse title and I reckon it'll be a kick-arse record.

Oh yeah; based on the samples this is going to be one hell of a record. As far as I'm concerned they could call it "turd in an eggcup" and as long as there are huge riffs (and lots of them) then it really doesn't matter at all.

Turd in an eggcup... that has a certain ring to it.

Yeah, on further reflection "Turd in an Eggcup" would be a pretty excellent album name.

Harvester, look it up in the dictionary... it is also a NOUN...and i'm pretty sure that if they wanted to use it as an adjective they would have grammatically made sense by calling it Magnetic Death, but it is reversed, hence, the use of Magnetic as a Noun.

I just formed a new band... We're called Turd in an Eggcup. We've got backing tracks done, and just a little work left to do on our album, so you should look for it in stores sometime in 2011....

What is an egg cup? Actually, I've always thought a GREAT band name would be T.P. For My Bunghole. I mean, that has a seriously cool ring to it. We could have shirts with it abbreviated TPFMB on them. Sounds waaaaaaaay better than Bullet For My Valentine. Who wants to see Bullet For My Valentine when you can go see T.P. For My Bunghole!!! Our fans could even be called Bunghoolios!!!!

Oh, we are opening for Turd in an Eggcup on Saturday night! Hmmm... I have a feeling our two bands could have a pretty good tour together. I REALLY hope that riff Lars and James improved midway through the above video makes it on the album. Thats one of the coolest riffs I've heard them play yet.

Don't know what an eggcup is? You Americans and your lack of vocabulary. It's something that you put an egg on when you've finished boiling it and what not; I guess you guys call it something else. THIS TOPIC IS NOW ABOUT EGGCUPS AND VARIANTS THEREOF

Tony, I DID look it up, in 3 different dictionaries, just to be sure. It's an adjective. The word MAGNET is a noun, the word MAGNETICALLY is an adverb, and the only way the word MAGNETIC can be a noun is if it's followed by another word, eg. MAGNETIC TAPE, MAGNETIC NORTH etc. So, my new band is going to be called "MAGNETIC IS AN ADJECTIVE". LOL. I'm with you caspian.

yeah xino I was at the secret show, just posted a write up on it. Talk about a cool show to be at. Still not sure what to think about this new album title. At first I was hoping it was the first single. Its starting to grow on me, death magnetic. Don't care to much for death in the title of anything, sounds a little un-original.

"Death Magnetic" is an original and perfect album title. It's very dark and very real. The album title is a huge dose of reality and reminder, that life is short. Whether your living as a king or as peasant or living a clean and sober life or not, in the end, all roads lead to death for us all. One way or another, we all die. We're no match for death's magnetic pull...death wins every time. Metallica brothers and sisters, take care and make the best of the life your living. Life on earth is a gift...celebrate it....with Metallica.
