06/11/2008 Entry: "BONNAROO"
Metallica plays back in the United States this Friday on a 700 acre farm in Manchester, TN. Luckily, we'll be able to check it out a few different ways. AT&T will webcast the show in their "Blue Room (I want an new iPhone) - the Blue Room broadcast starts June 13th, Metallica headlines Friday night!
Blabbermouth reports that Fuse Television will broadcast the Metallica performace the day after on Saturday June 14th at 10 PM. Although, we cannot find anything to back that info up - other than what appears to be an hour at 9 PM of Fuse Live at Bonnaroo and a half hour of programming at 10 PM of 'The Best of Bonnaroo Vol. 1." Check your local listings, etc.
Finally, The Metallica Club announce a pretty vague contest saying: "Let's just say that we have a little something special planned for that day and would love to have you join us." (Thursday, June 12th in Nashville, TN). Might we see Metallica making an appearance somewhere? Do not expect a club show... any cool record stores in Nashville?

I think the new logo has to do with Bonnaroo. Look at the magnets... they are just like the n's in the Bonnaroo logo. Just a guess, I could be wrong.... I do like it tho.

Yeah, that could be right Nick.. Some guy at metallicabb.com had the same thoughts along with some good arguments. I do like it too!

that contest was pretty vague. MM asked two trivia questions that could get you chosen to be at this "metallica appearence" with a few hours to kill on Thursday. Guess I didnt win since I havent heard anything. As far as music shops, there are a few, but nothing that would stand out as the "go to" place where they would show. Maybe somewhere downtown, at one of the little bars. Who knows.

You know, we STILL haven't seen a posting in the Riffs and Excerpts category... Unless Platinum users are seeing that. Is ANYONE paying for Platinum?

Yeah, whats up with the new image? Just think about it. Someone, somewhere is spending there day coming up with images to mess with our heads.

Well it's obviously going to spell something soon. I think we can all at least agree on that. I bet they add letters everyday. But what will it mean? Album title? Song name? ugh....

How many letters are in Deicide?

I doubt DEICIDE would be the album title since James seems to have found a certain way in faith, deicide have something to do with killing a god... maybe another god than he's? And it seems to began with a D and end with a C...

Tipper, New songs #1 & 2 came out in '06. If memory serves me correct in my old age, New Song #1 came out on 6-6-06. Listened to some Reload, Rehearse and Request yesterday. New Fly on the Wall riff was pretty cool!

Guys, I've figured it out...it's gotta be "deictic". Taken from wikipedia: In pragmatics and linguistics, deixis[1] is collectively the orientational features of human languages to have reference to points in time, space, and the speaking event between interlocutors. A word that depends on deictic clues is called a deictic or a deictic word. Deictic words are bound to a context — either a linguistic or extralinguistic context — for their interpretation.
Some English deictic words include, for example, the following:
now vs. then here vs. there this vs. that me vs. you vs. him/her go vs. come
Makes sense, no? Their reputation vs. current expectations? I figured it out!
Posted by joey @ 06/12/2008 10:13 AM EST

I have been thinking about it and have a number of ways of interpreting these clues... 1. If the Metallica M's are sideways, what if the outer letters are not a D and a C, but rather U turned sideways? 2. What if the E and I are put together? It could be an 8. Or it could be a B. 3. Everything up there, except the E, is a Roman numeral: the Ms, D, C, and I. What if they are slowly revealing the album release date via Roman numerals? I just figured I'd throw out some ideas to you guys so we can decipher this.

From Metalla's site, Metallica reacts to the album reviews or blogging: Reviews . . .
While we occasionally enjoy reading the various comments, rumors, speculation, reviews, gossip and all the good that the internet brings, rarely do we feel the desire/need to respond to the "blogosphere" . . . hey, everyone is entitled to have their thoughts and opinions, right? However, once we re-surfaced on Tuesday after a few weeks on tour in Europe, we were informed that someone at Q Prime (our managers) had made the error of asking a few publications to take down reviews of the rough mixes from the new record that were posted on their sites. Our response was "WHY?!!! Why take down mostly positive reviews of the new material and prevent people from getting psyched about the next record. . . that makes no sense to us!”" So after a few rounds of managerial ear spank and sentencing everyone at Q Prime to 20 push-ups each, we figured why not take matters into our own hands and just post the links here on our site. Kerrang, Metal Hammer, The Quietus. You see, we have maintained an "in the press" section here on Metallica.com for many years now, posting links to reviews of shows, album and DVD releases, and various other tidbits we've come across while surfing around. Some good, some not so good, but we put 'em all up . . . sort of the same way we treat our message boards on this site . . . welcoming all feedback.
So in the spirit of keeping this section current, we've put as many of the reviews of the rough mixes of the new record up here as we could find. If we missed any, let us know . . . and in the meantime, we're always adding, so peruse at your leisure.

Im really tired of the business/promotional aspect of this album..just release the thing already. MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF
Posted by sean @ 06/12/2008 12:52 PM EST

Based on all the reviews, the only two things I am concerned about on this album are the lyrics being diverse enough (as opposed to a small amount just being repeated a lot), and the songs' riffs feeling continous, whereas with The New Song and The Other New Song, it felt like a lot of good riffs that don't really belong in the same song together, thus, making the song sound "forced." Did any of you get that feeling with The New Song and The Other New Song?
Posted by D-J @ 06/12/2008 01:27 PM EST

The business/promotional aspect of music is always present- no matter what band you're listening to. All bands have labels that hype the album, whether online, or in print. The best thing to do is accept the business side of music as reality (because it is a business, just like everything else) and then you won't get so pissed. Music does exist for music's sake- but the music industry exists to make a profit. All bands are money grubbing- all bands want to get paid for the work that they do. I don't care if it's a crappy band at your local pub trying to get their 400 bucks for playing last Friday night, or Metallica trying to get royalties for songs released on the internet- it's all the same, just on a different scale.

Well at least people can stop bitching about this topic. Of course, the legions of bashers will say the reviews were only put back up in response to the negativity. And then they will find something else to complain about, and then complain on top of that. At 36 yoa, I simply don't bother with stuff I don't like anymore, and I think most people in my general age group do the same. Thus, my thoughts are most of these bashers are youngsters that first discovered the band post TBA(and thus are full of shit when they start talking about the old days).

It DOES seem some people put a ridiculous amount of energy into hating. Maybe they need to listen to Wasting My Hate a little more closely...

I think you guys are looking into these letters waaayyy too much. You can't tell me you even know for sure that the first two are for sure a D and a C. The speculation on these letters has gotten a bit ridiculous.
p.s. When is Metallica going to play Fixxxer live!!!!!!!!!???????????

I'm not even trying to figure it out. I've heard One about 500 times in the last couple of weeks. Both of my sons(5 and 8) love it from Guitar hero III and make me play it constantly in the car. I had to make a mix of the original, Binge and Purge, S&M and some bootlegs of it just to mix it up some.

Its gotta be the album title. Does anyone else here feel like they are playing Wheel Of Fortune? I just want to get to the point where we can solve the puzzle. Not sure about the latest riffage in the Fly On The Wall video. Sounds like harmonized leads going on, but still not sure I like the sound...

The album was described as 9 epics and one song. So maybe it could be a word play on the epic bit...but hell, it could be a word play on the EET FUK bit for all I know--lol! This is like Wheel of fucking Fortune.

What if the mystery image spells out ECLECTIC? Perhaps the 'D' at the beginning is a backwards 'C'. Plus, there could be a pretty good meaning with the new album being called Eclectic.

I agree. It has always seemed most logical (geez, I sound like Spock) to me that they will get through Bonnaroo, then use the month off they have from mid-June to mid-July to practice new songs and then play them when they resume touring. BUT, Lars DID say they were hoping to have some new songs ready by the time Bonnaroo came around... Who knows? Tonight could be the night. They should just practice that 5-minute song and play it tonight. You know, we haven't heard one thing about the 11th song that was cut from the album. When we will hear it? On the b-side of a single?
