05/27/2008 Entry: "MISSION REVEALED"

Here are the Mission Metallica plans... the website is set to launch sometime today. MetClub members get in for free.

- MISSION: METALLICA. Includes fly-on-the-wall footage, riffs and excerpts, new and archival photos, unique live tracks, audio and video blog postings, plus the chance to win concert tickets and backstage passes. Cost: FREE.

- HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL ALBUM DOWNLOAD. Package includes a digital version of the album at 320 KBIT/S, which is a better sound quality than what is available through most digital retailers. Users can pre-order the album download, delivered at midnight on street date. Cost: $11.99.

- PHYSICAL CD + HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL ALBUM DOWNLOAD. Package includes the physical CD, plus shipping, as well as the high-quality, 320 KBIT/S digital version of the album. Users can pre-order the album digital download, delivered at midnight on street date. Cost: $19.99.

- HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL ALBUM DOWNLOAD + MISSION: METALLICA PLATINUM. Package includes high-quality, 320 KBIT/S digital version of the album, delivered at midnight on street date, plus Platinum Mission: Metallica Experience. Cost: $24.99.

- PHYSICAL CD, HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL ALBUM DOWNLOAD + MISSION: METALLICA PLATINUM. Package includes the physical CD, plus shipping, high-quality, 320 KBIT/S digital version of the album, delivered at midnight on street date, plus Platinum Mission: Metallica Experience. Cost: $32.99.

- LIMITED EDITION: FIVE VINYL LP BOXED SET, PHYSICAL CD, HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL ALBUM DOWNLOAD, LITHOGRAPH + MISSION: METALLICA PLATINUM. Limited-edition package includes a boxed set of five LP's, each pressed on 180-gram, 45 rpm vinyl, with five individual sleeves, the physical CD, the high-quality, 320 KBIT/S digital version of the album delivered at midnight on street date, a Mission: Metallica lithograph, the Platinum Mission:
Metallica Experience, plus all shipping included. Cost: $124.99.

Still a lot of questions and I think more than a few of us are a little bothered by this whole "xperience".. after all, Jump In The Studio (The making of St. Anger) was free and you can (more than likely) run down on release day to buy the album at a much more reasonable cost and rip the CD to your favorite digital music device yourself. And for $125 you get five copies of the new album? Seems a bit odd.

The apparent cheapest way to experience Mission: Metallica Platinum is by spending $25 - and in doing so, buying an album you'd probably have purchased elsewhere at a much better rate. I'm not sure whose plan this is, but it sure seems like your missing out on some great marketing by limiting the number of people who can access this. Let's face it, the material will probably leak out anyhow (we do not encourage that), and this will definitely not help the band's image (as being a bit money hungry) for which the Napster issue tarnished considerably.

At this point, I really just want the name of the album and a release date. The rest is just giving me a headache.

While offering a digital download option is a great idea as an alternative revenue source for the band, this "ultra-mega-super-Godsend" package smells of greenbacks. I'm all about the options, but is there really a need for anything other than the physical album, the L.P., and maybe the lithograph?

Posted by Tipper @ 05/27/2008 03:48 PM EST

yeah, seems like a lot of options and prices for different medias. Just give me a CD with some artwork/booklet (and none of that cardboard/paper CD case shit) and I will be happy. But I must agree with Trace, gimme an album title or something to sooth my/our thirst for new Metallica. jeez.

Posted by The General @ 05/27/2008 04:08 PM EST

Still no real description on what the Platinum this really is, longer video clips or something?

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/27/2008 04:10 PM EST

i am sure that they are referring to the re-issue 180 gram vinyl of the first 5 albums, plus the new cd, plus the download. i don't think they are giving you 5 of the same LPs, that would be dumb and doesn't sound like the smart guys in Metallica.
i was a member of Metclub back in the day and this actually sounds better than it used to because you used to just get SoWhat and that was about it.
if i have the scratch, i will probably get the Vinyl package because that is a sick deal for all of that since all of the albums are going for about 30bucks alone.

Posted by godcore74 @ 05/27/2008 04:16 PM EST

I am in the fan club so I suppose get it for free. I will just use the fan club to see stuff online and go to the store the day of the sale and buy it. I can only imagine that people that pay for the CD online, somewhere will not have it the day it is released and be pissed. This does seem like it is not a well thought out plan.

Posted by Mark @ 05/27/2008 04:41 PM EST

the vinyl is the album pressed onto 5 records, it takes that many because of the type of vinyl they're using

i don't get it, what's the big deal? most of it's basically free

Posted by vinyl @ 05/27/2008 05:23 PM EST

that's no biggie..whoever wants more pays for it. so fucking what... my issue is this delay

Posted by Tony @ 05/27/2008 06:16 PM EST

i cant wait no more!!! i came back from work so excited and still nothing!!! ahhh!!! well hopefully tonight after band rehearsal

Posted by xino @ 05/27/2008 07:01 PM EST

ya, i am waiting too. i just threw my back out at work and i thought by the time i got back, 2hrs, it would be up. still nothing. guess i'll go take some pain killers, wake up in the morning and hope it's on! ahahah.
i even got on my Blackjack at the doc's to see if they updated, but i don't have Adobe for my phone. rats!

Posted by godcore74 @ 05/27/2008 07:07 PM EST

M:M is up and runnin'.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/27/2008 08:25 PM EST

I am sure that this site is run more by Warner than by the band itself so I will have to pass on the band being money grubbing. Will they get a slice of the pie, sure they will but it is not the bands personal website that they are running themselves and reaping all the money from it. I doubt they have much to do with setting any prices or what is being given for those prices. I am with the others, give me an album title and a solid release date and I will be fine. Look at what the site has to offer for free and look for the rest on YouTube if you do not want to pay any extra. No Big Deal!

Posted by Tim @ 05/27/2008 08:31 PM EST

It's terrible for the bands image, though. They've already got enough of a bad reputation as sellouts/money hungry rock stars etc etc and this certainly isn't going to help.

Furthermore, I have no idea how to get into the free section of Mission Metallica. I'm doubtful if there even is one, right now.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:04 PM EST

nvm, finally found out how to access the free site.. to be honest they don't make it all that easy.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:06 PM EST

uhhh, does anyone else to find it that as soon as you click on the new fly on the wall link your net disconnects? It's happened to me a few times in a row, now.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:26 PM EST

just to continue my monologue.. Nevermind! It works fine on Internet Explorer, just not so on firefox.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:42 PM EST

What the fuck is going on...??? I'm not getting anything new on the MM site, at all. Maybe the US version is different to the Australian version. Does anyone have any idea on whether this site operates differently in different countries? Or is there another way for me to see the new content? Cause I'm getting nothing here.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/27/2008 09:52 PM EST

The first option i had when i came in was the free option. Can't find why you had problems with that part! I guess 33$ for the album delivered at home + the platinum option is not rubbing. Selling a ticket 300$ (less expensive tickets available) to see Madona live is rubbing for me... We'll see in a few days if it's worth it

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/27/2008 09:53 PM EST

Try to select another country or to hit refresh in internet explorer. If not, try clearing your cache... If you want to enter the us or canada one, maybe try to change your regionals settings in Windows to get to those sites...Definetly their will be diferences between countrys as they said in an earlier news..

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/27/2008 09:55 PM EST

Use internet explorer, refresh your cache. Somewhere there's a link for payment options; say you're an american (unless you plan on going platinum) look through them and on the 2nd page there's one for the free option.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 10:02 PM EST

I tried to sign up, but some son of a bitch already used EET FUK as a login name! Bastard!

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/27/2008 10:24 PM EST

Is anyone seeing any new clips with new riffs??

Posted by D-J @ 05/27/2008 10:53 PM EST

Hi, I'm new here. Nice to meet you all. Well, I've been following discussions here for a while, trying to keep up-to-date with what Metallica has been up to. This really is the best place.

I also feel a bit uncomfortable with this eh marketing plan.
But then again: there seems to be a great need for new material. That's an understatement. And where there is need, there is money. I read that this album will be the last on the Warner label, so: how far-fetched is it to assume they want to squeeze the last remaining dollar out of Metallica and their fans, now almost desperate to hear something new?

Still, there is a free option and I'm sure the 'Platinum' riffs, should they emerge, will leak anyway. Living in China, I just created a 'free' account in Mission Metallica. It's quite simple as long as you key in a US ZIP code. And I'm using Firefox.

Posted by quickfished @ 05/27/2008 11:04 PM EST

No good. Tried all those things, but it didn't work. It looks like you guys are getting stuff before us. Thanks for the tips anyway. Any other bright ideas? Maybe just send me a link? It's a long shot, but it might work.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/27/2008 11:09 PM EST

*registers*..*email confirmation* ..*signs in* *watches new video* ... .... .... ....... ........ .... ...$$$ LOL $$$

Posted by sean @ 05/27/2008 11:12 PM EST

When clicking on the 2 links for the photos from the fly on the wall section, I noticed that under each link, there's only one photo. I tried mousing over to see if there was an arrow to view more, but it looks like there's only one for each. Am I right about this? Also, I'm guessing the release date will be 9-23-08. Why you might ask? They said it will be 4 months from the update on Metallic.com, which was on 5-22-08. Since they usually release media on Tuesdays, so I'm guessing it'll be on 9-23. I could be wrong, though.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/27/2008 11:14 PM EST

Harvester- I'm in Australia too, so it should work for you.

..And yeah the new video was completely unremarkable.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 11:56 PM EST

Caspian - Still no joy from me. Nothing new since the first fly on the wall, so I dunno what's going on. Is it supposed to come up like another little tag at the edge of the media player? Or is it another link somewhere? Cause I've got no new tags and none of my links are active - (i.e. when I put my cursor over them, they do not turn into the little hand).

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/28/2008 12:10 AM EST

Delete your temporary internet files and clear your cache, Harvester.

Posted by Last Son of Krypton @ 05/28/2008 02:13 AM EST

I couldn't get the site to open either. Instead of using the link in "My Favorites" folder, I linked from the MM link on Metallica.com and now everything is fine. The site does now require Flash Player 8.

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/28/2008 11:23 AM EST

anyone get the 2nd fly on the wall video to play?

Posted by The General @ 05/28/2008 11:29 AM EST

Yeah, I got the new one to play. It seems to be a slowed down version of part of New Song 1, which if I'm understanding their conversation seems to be a breakdown part of whatever song it's gonna be.

Posted by kurt @ 05/28/2008 12:08 PM EST

Wtf anyone else not see the fly on the wall thing anymore when they go on MM. Not to mention I don't see a fly on the wall part 2. Someone help!

Posted by Nick @ 05/28/2008 01:12 PM EST

Nick, are you looking at that main page, or have you signed up to it. I'm a metclub member and I signed up, but I think you can sign up if you're not a metclub member and it will bring you to this timeline type of page that has all the stuff up.

Posted by kurt @ 05/28/2008 01:24 PM EST

Well they have my email, I don't get what I am supposed to put in for a password...

Posted by Nick @ 05/28/2008 01:31 PM EST

Wow, I am an idiot... lol Thanks for the help. So I am still debating on whether I should sign up for MMP... I have never met them before and could get the chance then, but what are the odds of that ya know? ugh.

Posted by Nick @ 05/28/2008 01:51 PM EST

wow, they actually made it into a really cool riff...i love the interaction in between james and kirk in that part

Posted by xino @ 05/28/2008 01:55 PM EST

SHIT SHIT . Someone needs to get fired for this, Cliff Berstien and Peter Mensch are fucking dumb. They just should have advised them to kept JITS like St. anger. With fucking gas @ 4.01, why would anybody spent money on this. Just wait till September. Proof that it was peter and not metallica look this http://youtube.com/watch?v=_0K89UDhI3o&feature=related. That fucking guy is a piece of shit.

Posted by Drum @ 05/28/2008 02:00 PM EST

I dont see why you are all freaking out, if you dont want it, dont buy it. It is free for fan club members. No one is making you by it and they are putting in alot of money to give us these updates. I work for an IT company and this is not cheap to produce. Most bands dont do anything. Again, dont want to pay then dont. Metallica is one band that is always supposed to give it away for free because people were mad about them fighting Napster. Now years later we hear the industry is in ruins thanks to downloading.

Posted by Mark @ 05/28/2008 02:17 PM EST

i don't get what you're complaining about, MISSION METALLICA IS FREE! WTF is so complicated about that.

Posted by wtf @ 05/28/2008 02:38 PM EST

I'm not sure about this, but even if you don't pay for the extras, isn't there a bunch of stuff you can check out for free? The money, if you are not a club member, is just for the extra stuff. I don't get all the complaints. And let's not pretend that all of the little clips will be available at various sites on the net. I've got a few cleaned up and edited versions of the song snippets already released and I've seen the clips(at least the first three) available at a site.

Posted by kurt @ 05/28/2008 02:42 PM EST

I gave in and paid the 24.99 after signing up for the free part, but I still can't access the Platinum part that I f'ing paid for wtf! The email says they will send you an email for log in info and haven't received crap.

Posted by Nick @ 05/28/2008 03:10 PM EST

If you just signed up it might take a bit. I first sent my info to them months ago, but didn't get my code until yesterday. Now that was probably because it wasn't set up yet, but you'll probably get it soon. And to be honest, so far your not missing that much.

Posted by kurt @ 05/28/2008 03:41 PM EST

when I click on the video, the 28th, a player pops up but doesn't play anythingm, it just sits there. Got my password in and everything. What gives?

Posted by The General @ 05/28/2008 03:52 PM EST

Watching that Youtube video that Drum posted, actually getting a chance to listen to Kirk play The Memory Remains without any vocals... the guitar solo and riff sound just like something Hendrix wrote... pretty cool shit.

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/28/2008 04:17 PM EST

I signed up for the free stuff because I'm cheap. Is that the reason why I'm not seeing a video for the 28th? I just see the 2 Kill 'Em All links. Am I missing something?

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/28/2008 06:51 PM EST

just got the videos to play on my home computer, its got vista on it. And maybe an updated flash player.

Posted by The General @ 05/28/2008 07:33 PM EST

Disregard my comment above about today's video; I just watched it.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/28/2008 07:47 PM EST

Thanks for the help, fellow Metallifux. I finally got in. I think it's still a bit limited with what we get here in Oz - keep getting this screen saying "coming soon" or "access denied". Guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/28/2008 07:48 PM EST

No need to upgrade for platinum BS, you will see those videos on Youtube shortly, such as MOP

devils dance!!

Posted by xino @ 05/28/2008 11:52 PM EST

I just want to hear the mother of all Metallica covers, Am I Evil. The opening riff along with the main riff are just the meanest, fattest riffs ever, even if it was written by Diamond Head. It just doesn't chug any better than that. Pretty simple to play on guitar, too.

Posted by D-J @ 05/29/2008 12:36 AM EST

Devil's Dance IS pretty wicked. Here they are playing it for the first time ever live in 1995. Distorted sound, but mean as fuck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdf9j52HuuA

Posted by D-J @ 05/29/2008 12:40 AM EST

Notice how that set list is made up of mainly stuff from the first five albums...??? Nothing from Load, fuck-all from Reload and nothing from St Anger. I have also noticed that over the last few years they've started to play a lot more stuff off Lightning and Kill 'em All. If this is an indication of the direction they're heading - back to the glory days, when Metallica ruled the world - then bring it the fuck on!!! I just hope this album isn't the disappointment that St Anger was.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/29/2008 02:46 AM EST

4 Shows and No NEW shit.... Hmmm....

Posted by $trangeR @ 05/29/2008 03:53 AM EST

Am I evil is my fave metallica cover, too, although I think it's the beast of the bridge that really makes it.

Posted by caspian @ 05/29/2008 05:54 AM EST

$trangeR, based on some comments the boys made, I don't think we have a prayer of hearing anything new until after Bonnaroo. From mid June to mid July, they have a month off. I suspect they will rehearse some new stuff for playing live, so the earliest I realistically expect to hear a new song live is second half of July. Also, that way it will be a few weeks before the single is released to the radio (I am estimating August, assuming the album is released in September). I think it'd be cool if they did a medley of a few songs, maybe even no lyrics, just to give us a taste of the new sound, but without revealing too much. They must have something really cool waiting for us because they are intent on making this album a surprise.

Posted by D-J @ 05/29/2008 11:26 AM EST

Even on the St. Anger tour, their setlists were first five album dominant. On the night I saw them, only 4 of the 18 songs didn't come from those five albums. As for something new, I wouldn't expect it until Bonnaroo at the earliest, and probably not until later in the summer. The thing that jumped out at me about that setlist is the different format- they played a longer main set and a shorter encore.

damn, more vids on MM. IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!
