officially may 12th! fuck yeah!!!

Posted by xino @ 05/12/2008 12:05 AM EST

The clips at the end of this video of the new shit sounds great. It sounds like our boys may actually be back!!!! It's not much to go by but form the little samples I want to hear more, the riffs sound cool and Kirk's solo stuff sounds great....welcome back boys....long time coming!!!!

Posted by Doug @ 05/12/2008 12:33 AM EST

Help, I can't stop!!!!

Posted by Tim @ 05/12/2008 12:38 AM EST

ahh, isnt it good to have some fuckin news! this is awesome!

Posted by Mark @ 05/12/2008 12:45 AM EST

anyone else getting the mercyful fate medley ? fuckin killer.

Posted by sean @ 05/12/2008 12:47 AM EST

It def. has a Meryful Fate/ Garage Inc. vibe.... Love that the first song played in the shorter video starts out with just bass and drums!

Posted by Nick @ 05/12/2008 01:48 AM EST

SUICIDE! I'VE ALREADY DIED BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH WAITING FOR!

that's the best thing I've heard so far. Some of the tunes in the longer vid were pretty fast, too, I hope that the drums don't spend the whole album doing half time beats though.

Posted by caspian @ 05/12/2008 01:56 AM EST

Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit. I can honestly say all those clips from the first video are, wow, geeez, even better than I could have imagined. This album is going to be ridiculous. Gotta listen to the next clip now...

Posted by D-J @ 05/12/2008 07:27 AM EST

does anyone know how to get these on mp3?

Its Maytallica month... but the website doesn't give/say much. Hope it will have more video's and downloads, or at least the album work

Posted by Bond @ 05/12/2008 09:34 AM EST

Is it working right now? I already gave my email a while back, but when I go to the site not much seems to be happening.

Posted by kurt @ 05/12/2008 09:46 AM EST

I think we should keep an eye on the site today (as if we weren't already checking it every 5 minutes anyway) as it looks like its incomplete. It looks like that trailer should be showing in the little black box, plus on metallica.com they said the whole site should be up today, and I would hope their definition of a whole site is not one web page!

How about that tune that goes:
"Bow down. Sell your soul to me. I will get you free."

The lyrics kinda remind me of Devil's Dance, but a thrash version of it! I dub this song Devil Dance Thrash.

Posted by D-J @ 05/12/2008 09:54 AM EST

If the first teaser is not working then you need to click here :

Damn link is not working, just copy and paste in your Internet browser this " http://www.dailymotion.com/country:ve/video/x5e15h_mission-metallica-teaser_music "

Posted by $trangeR @ 05/12/2008 10:29 AM EST

I gotta say... if the rumors about this being a pay site are true - then someone needs to get fired. It's fucking stupidity. The band already has a reputation as being money hungry and such... this site should be part of the album promotion... not another money grab. It's just a bad fucking idea to sell the album this way... and the pricing is obscene (if whats been posted holds true)... $35 for the CD and digital download of the same CD? It'll be at Best Buy for $10 opening week... and I can rip it for my iPod myself.

This bad management. End of story.

Posted by IS-JD @ 05/12/2008 11:18 AM EST

I love the riff/track at 0:20 in the first video. Sounds familiar, not sure why. JD, surely its not going to be like that. Hopefully the site is there to just promote, not accept money for listenings. Hopefully.

Posted by The General @ 05/12/2008 11:27 AM EST

Totally agree that the platinum thing is completely unnecessary, unless if it's REALLY good. It does reek of a cash grab. JD- do you have links to said rumours?

Posted by caspian @ 05/12/2008 11:44 AM EST

Dont be suprised guys, when the site was up for that brief time there was a pay section with some pretty shitty price points on it that ranged as high as 99.99 from what I can remember. BS i know. Heres to hoping that wont be the case.

Posted by Mark @ 05/12/2008 11:47 AM EST

Oh, so MM may be a complete pay site? (reading the Met forum boards) Well, you've got to be fucking kidding me. I really hope that those rumous are just, well, rumours.

Posted by caspian @ 05/12/2008 11:50 AM EST

Somewhere said it was free for metclub members, which I am. But I think it is pretty shitty for this to be a paysite otherwise. Unless they are assuming it would mostly be metclub type folks that would be signing up for this.

Posted by kurt @ 05/12/2008 11:58 AM EST

yeah, that would suck ass if you have to pay to get to use that MM site. JITS was free, why would they fuck with that? ANyone else notice the new Metallica "M" from the short video? It flashes around the 58 second mark, kinda a combo of the old and new...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/12/2008 12:03 PM EST

I think it sounds great. I love the fans dissecting 10 seconds of a riff or a speed of song and coming up with an analysis on the entire album. I think the pay thing is a cool idea. Companies and bands are becoming creative with declining sales. So you pay but that price includes the CD, download of entire album and many other things. It is an innovative idea. This album will be outstanding, I just cant wait to hear the entire thing.

Posted by Mark @ 05/12/2008 12:21 PM EST

I'm annoyed you have to even register (and log in) to read the stuff on their tour site, but at least that's free. Hopefully they don't go the pay route here.

Posted by Trace @ 05/12/2008 12:24 PM EST

One more thing...I have read so far this is similar to load, I read it is similar to AJFA, it is similar to the Black Album, it sounds like Motorhead or Garage Inc...If I recall Metallia did play on all those albums so there may be a similarity since it is the same band. Metallica did one thing wrong, they wrote the best 4 or 5 metal albums of all time in succession. How can you compete with the best? You can never live up to that standard so there will never be a time or album that every agrees is at that standard. Cant happen no matter what. Some of you know Citizen Kane is typically voted the best movie ever and it was Orson Welles first movie he wrote and Directed. After the Academy Awards there is a famous quote where someone told him you never should of done your best work because you will never be able to live up to that again. It was true of him and true of Metallica. They can never write a Master of Puppets nor could Black Sabbath write another Paranoid and Zeppelin another 4...This album though will still a classic.

Posted by Mark @ 05/12/2008 12:26 PM EST

Like most of you, on one, I wouldn't want to have to pay for this site, but I like Mark's thinking. Maybe this is a cool idea. If they keep constant fresh content leading up to the album release, plus you get the CD delivered to your door step on its release day, plus the ability to download it right away, plus all the other stuff, backstage passes, etc, this could REALLY be a big deal for how bands start releasing their material.

Remember how cool it was when DVD first came out and we started getting all the cool behind-the-scenes stuff? You don't just simply buy a movie anymore. You get a package, cool extras with the movie at the core of the package. This new method they are trying (provided they don't try to charge people an arm and a leg) could be pretty cool...

Posted by D-J @ 05/12/2008 01:05 PM EST

i cant get in all i see is a regestraion screen and nothing more. am i missing something ??

Posted by andrew @ 05/12/2008 01:43 PM EST

General, the riff at the 0:20 mark on the first vid kinda reminds me of Sex Type Thing by STP. For some reason I think of that song when I hear it. Maybe that's what your thinking of??? From what I hear so far, I'm pretty stoked. Sounds like James has complete control of the lyrics again. Sounds like a great album to cruise to.

Posted by Seth @ 05/12/2008 02:12 PM EST

I hope the clips played above end up on the album. I remember when they gave us clips from Shadows of the Cross and Dead Kennedy Rolls and they weren't on the last album. I like what I've heard so far.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/12/2008 02:21 PM EST

yeah it sounds similar to sex type thing. I knew it was something. I kept humming it in my head and couldn't think of it for. So nothing new on missionmetallica.com. Where the updates?

Posted by The General @ 05/12/2008 04:39 PM EST

I was just about to say that, its been the 12th for many hours, wheres the site!!!! aaaaaaggggghhhhh

It's back up!

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/12/2008 05:11 PM EST

I hope we get something new every day.

Posted by Bond @ 05/12/2008 05:15 PM EST

I don't hear Sex Type Thing at all odd comparison in my opinion...

omg new update!!!

Posted by Nick @ 05/12/2008 05:16 PM EST

Who knew Rob could rap like that!? lol!

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/12/2008 05:17 PM EST

OK, I'm confused. Is there anything other than that one window that plays one of two videos. I don't anything else, or can't click onto anything else. Is this where people saw prices? Cause I don't see any.

Posted by kurt @ 05/12/2008 05:33 PM EST

nick, it is a minute comparison, not even the same riff, just sounds similar.

Posted by The General @ 05/12/2008 05:39 PM EST

my work wont let me install flash 8 so i guess im sol until i get home in like 5 hours! aghh,

Posted by Mark @ 05/12/2008 05:48 PM EST

That video is pretty funny lol, too bad there is nothing juicy in it though...

Posted by Nick @ 05/12/2008 05:53 PM EST

What the hell is a "click"???

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/12/2008 06:08 PM EST

It keeps him in beat so his tempo doesn't change.

Posted by Nick @ 05/12/2008 06:19 PM EST

that was the worst video ever. post that stuff on blabbermouth.

Posted by The General @ 05/12/2008 06:22 PM EST

Q: What is a click track? A click track is basically a metronome that is sent to your headphones while you play that keeps you in the right tempo. All the professional musicians in the world use a click track when they record.

The benefits you get from using one are many:
1. Solid tempo throughout the song.
2. The ability to copy and paste sections of the song without tempo shift.
3. Having the click track during drum breaks in the song makes its easier for the overdubbing musicians to keep time when there are no drums.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/12/2008 06:27 PM EST

Hey General we are going to get this kind of videos until the album pops out, I dont think we're getting anything else, besides it was kinda fun, no? Peace

Posted by EPDA @ 05/12/2008 06:47 PM EST

gotcha! Thanks guys! BRING ON THE ALBUM!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/12/2008 07:57 PM EST

Found the second one funny. I like these type of things. Avenge sevenfold did it on their My Space with the latest album. It just helps while waiting the real thing. If you read carfully for the platinum thing it says "If a LOT is not enough" so there will be plenty of informations and video, but if you want a little extra and the album delyver to your home then you can pay and get the platinum thing. I think it's a really great idea. If you don't want to pay you don't have to... anyway, tell me wath is free nowadays!

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/12/2008 07:57 PM EST

fingers still excited... can not even type words correctly!

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/12/2008 07:59 PM EST

I told myself I'd be cool... I knew there wasn't going to be a single or anything on the site... I'd just go and check it out and not get too excited. It's just clips, little bits, no telling how the songs sound from 10 seconds each... and now I'm just lying in a pool of drool (which I hear is the name of the new album) and wanting to hear what comes after that "Break DOWN!" or whatever it is he's saying... This is going to be a really long 3 months.

Posted by Azrael @ 05/12/2008 08:05 PM EST

I got really excited a couple of years ago when I heard that Metallica FINALLY fucked Bob Rock off. I got even more excited when I heard that Rick Rubin was producing the new album, because I knew he'd take them back to the pre-Bob Rock days and help Metallica to gat back on track. And from the excerpts on the vids, it sounds like I was right. It sounds like vintage Metallica, which is what needed to happen. I (like many fans) was at my wits end with the shit that they've been putting out for the last ten or fifteen years, and I have heard it from many people (myself included) that if this album was shit, that we would cut Metallica away altogether and just listen to the first five (fucking brilliant) albums. Bob Rock, after helping them produce one of the greatest metal albums of all time (the Black Album) took the greatest metal band the world has ever known and he turned them into some other band that was no longer Metallica, which I can never forget or forgive. But, with the exit of Bob Rock and the fresh injection of some new blood in the form of Rob (who, incidentally, I believe is the perfect replacement for Cliff and it's a pity they didn't find him in 1987), I am fucking psyched and can't wait for the new album. It sounds like James is back to his brutal best, Kirk is actually playing decent solos again and Lars has fixed up the shitty snare sound that completely overshadowed the already very ordinary St Anger. BRING IT ON BOYS!!!! YOU ARE KNOWN AS THE GREATEST METAL BAND IN HISTORY... NOW IT'S TIME TO PROVE IT!!!! LET'S SEE YOU SHOW THE NEW GENERATION OF METALLERS HOW IT'S DONE. METAL UP YOUR ASS!!!!!

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/12/2008 11:33 PM EST

I think we have our first real song title. If you are on missionmetallica.com and watch the video when you click Get A Preview, Lars is talking to Rick Rubin and says "Just to let you know, the song we just played, Hell And Back, blah blah blah..." Its about 15 or 20 seconds into the clip. And he may very well be referring to the song we hear midway through the trailer video with the lyrics "Bow down, sell your soul to me, I will set you free." I mean, those lyrics sound like they are from the devil's perspective to me... The devil lives in hell, hence, Hell And Back... What do you guys think?

Ok, now for some fun conjecture. Considering those lyrics *seem* similiar to Devil's Dance, and assuming they aren't going to just make another song that simply parallels Devil's Dance, how could this song be different? Well, what if its a song about someone that is having a near death experience... of hell?! Once again, Hell And Back. Now that would be fucking cool...

Posted by D-J @ 05/12/2008 11:38 PM EST

I think he said Halenback, referring to Germany, but I could be wrong. I'm guessing that since they called the songs by the area where they were touring.
"Suicide, I've already died. You're just the funeral I've been waiting for." I'm still having mixed feelings about listening to stuff early from these guys. It's difficult because I want to experience the stuff with others, but you still want something to look forward to.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/13/2008 12:16 AM EST

He said Halenback.

Posted by caspian @ 05/13/2008 02:35 AM EST

Halenback is what he said. Def. didn't say Hell and Back. Metallica and generic song names just don't mix. Anyone would have to agree. I mean the song names they come up with are far from generic. Hell and Back would b pretty generic in my opinion for their taste. Idk... I mean come on... king nothing, fixxxer, master of puppets, etc. the list goes on and on and on.....

Posted by Nick @ 05/13/2008 03:23 AM EST

Here's hoping they play some new tunes live in their next few gigs, too.

Posted by caspian @ 05/13/2008 05:59 AM EST

Ahhh fuck... Actually, I could tell it was Halenback, but was hoping for Hell And Back...

Posted by D-J @ 05/13/2008 07:05 AM EST

...However, I disagree on generic song titles. They DO have some that could be considered quite generic... Whiplash, Seek & Destroy, For Whom The Bell Tolls, One, Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters, The House Jack Built, Hero of the Day, Fuel, and Bad Seed. Hell And Back would really not be too different than these song titles that are very commonly used in our culture.

Posted by D-J @ 05/13/2008 07:21 AM EST

I think it could be hell and back also.

It is also plausible that we might see lyrical content having to do with James' Christian faith. He has not talked about it much, but I strongly believe that is what has kept him out of booze and back with his family.

He has a couple of crosses tattoed on his body and I have heard other references during interviews.

Hell and Back could be refering to his trials, being pushed to the brink.

Posted by manguy @ 05/13/2008 08:30 AM EST

This is where the giraffe album cover comes in. I knew I remembered this from somewhere: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=c-YJ_rEONQA

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/13/2008 08:51 AM EST

I have read some people say what we hear is demos and the drums will sound bigger. If I have had one compaint about Rick Rubin is that his drums are always in the background and not prominent. Listen to Chili Peppers or Linkin Park, I thought the drums were weak. I hope they liven up the drum sound but I think what we hear is the finished product

Posted by Mark @ 05/13/2008 11:19 AM EST

i am hoping for more intros to the new songs. you know how a song would start with a guitar swell, build up then just BAM in your face. Kinda like Frayed Ends. Listen to a lot of the trax from yester-year and they use intros, outros, guitar swells and build-ups to make the song stand out.

Posted by The General @ 05/13/2008 11:20 AM EST

The main problem with Rubin's records (see: any new RHCP, newest Johnny Cash) is that the production is ear-rapingly loud. No dynamics, just CONSTANT SHOUTING LIKE THIS WHICH AS YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED GETS FATIGUING AFTER A WHILE. Google 'loudness wars californication' for good examples.

Posted by caspian @ 05/13/2008 11:56 AM EST

Hey i never post but Mark is right about the drums all those bands he mentioned have low drum sound. I also think that this is the final product. The drums on the black album with the current songs would sound great.

Posted by Drum @ 05/13/2008 12:43 PM EST

is the site still just limited to that one window? Where the hell is all this platinum stuff people are talking about?

Posted by kurt @ 05/13/2008 12:54 PM EST

amusing tallica video, where ever this came from lol.

Posted by Nick @ 05/13/2008 01:30 PM EST

overall vibe from what i heard is like reload/st anger. which makes sense it is their last two studio albums.

Posted by sean @ 05/13/2008 03:34 PM EST

I don't understand y people say Reload really. The guitar SOUND wise to me is Garage Inc. style. Overal playing to me is somewhere between Justice/Black/Garage.

St. Anger Sean? Where? lol I'm not mocking you or anything, I just don't hear it.

Posted by Nick @ 05/13/2008 04:38 PM EST

I think it sounds something like metallica 2008, with a little of every album mixed in there. Isn't hard to speculate what it sounds like with 13 second clips? 3 more days till we hear a new song, in full. get ready. then we'll REALLY know what the new material sounds like.

Posted by The General @ 05/13/2008 04:57 PM EST

Sorry sean, I agree with Nick. With all due respect, I don't know how those clips sound ANYTHING like Reload or St Anger. The heaviness of some of those riffs and ESPECIALLY Kirk's wicked fast guitar lead definitely brings me back to MOP, AJFA, and TBA. Listening to those clips was a natural experience for me. It just totally sounded like Metallica, classic Metallica. When Load, Reload, and St Anger came out, they were totally unknown sounds to me. I had to listen to them a lot to understand the sounds I was hearing as they were so unlike anything Metallica had done before. But I think The General said it best, it sounds like Metallica 2008. It has that fresh, new sound, while definitely having the influence of all the albums. I would say a few tiny bits, like at the VERY end of the promo video slightly reminds me of the repetitiveness of St Anger, but for me it feels pretty representative of the earlier Metallica stuff.

Posted by D-J @ 05/13/2008 05:13 PM EST

I agree with you too General. Some people bitch because they want the guitars to sound like they did in the 80's or Hets voice to sound like kill em all all over again. That WILL not happen. Your getting Metallica in 2008 with old school influences and a new twist. This is a far far far departure of St. Anger. I think that can b agreed upon. Other than that I am sure it will have some influences from all other albums other than Anger.

Posted by Nick @ 05/13/2008 06:50 PM EST

Don't throw tomatoes at me guys...

I just can't help feeling.... like the preview makes it sound.... weak. I know there are many more things to come. The "Bow Down" song in the preview is good, but I preferred either of the two "New Songs"... hell, I love their early work, but I don't want it to feel or sound forced. I would take an album full of Dead Kennedy Rolls and be happy.

I know there's more to come, but damn that MissionMetallica site sucks.

okay, sorry for the rant, I didn't post yesterday or today about it. Been building up!

Posted by Tipper @ 05/13/2008 07:09 PM EST

I just can't get over how natural this new stuff sounds to me. For me, its more natural than when I first listened to Load, Reload, St Anger, No Leaf Clover, Minus Human, I Disappear, The New Song, The Other New Song, Dead Kennedy Rolls, and anything else released since the Black Album.

Bow down, sell your soul to me, I will set you free... (insert wicked Kirk The Ripper lead here)

Posted by D-J @ 05/13/2008 07:56 PM EST

I really wish they would play a new song tommorrow night in L.A., but I'm just not sure they will do it so early... Maybe if we are lucky... What would be really cool is if they didn't play a new song, but rather a medley of 3 or 4 songs from the new album, so we don't really get to hear a whole new song, but rather pieces from a few of them... That would make a lot of sense, really.

Posted by D-J @ 05/13/2008 08:01 PM EST

Bow to leper messiah

Posted by Tony @ 05/13/2008 09:13 PM EST

I know the clips where short but they gave me the chills when I heard them, and for me that is a good thing, I still get them listening to the first 5 albums. Not that I do not like the post black music but it does not have the same feel to it except for some Garage and S&M. An instrumental would be great.

Posted by Tim @ 05/13/2008 10:18 PM EST

hey. does anyone know if Rob is doing backing vocals on this album? I know he does on-stage sometimes...

Posted by Tipper @ 05/13/2008 10:24 PM EST

Tim, I agree. An instrumental would be awesome. Every album after Justice has really felt like there was something missing without it.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/13/2008 11:14 PM EST

james always takes care of all the vocals in studio albums

Posted by xino @ 05/13/2008 11:46 PM EST

I miss the instrumentals too. I always felt The Outlaw Torn and Fixxxer were in some ways long lost cousins of the earlier instrumentals. They may have lyrics, but they have that vibe of being epic like The Call of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live Is To Die. I have made a couple of different Metallica mixes over the years to suit my moods, and those all end up on my epic mix, basically Metallica songs that are long as fuck and take me on a surreal musical journey.

Posted by D-J @ 05/14/2008 12:18 AM EST

I've got to think that the sound of these clips is due to the compression used to get it on the interwebs... but I remember thinking the same thing on Stanger, so I won't be surprised if this is the final mix. On a good note, I live about 2 miles from Pizza Hut Park, so it's time for me to finally break down and see an Ozzfest. Can't wait!

Posted by Azrael @ 05/14/2008 01:17 AM EST

Spot-on D-J, The Outlaw Torn is probably the closest thing to an instrumental that they've done for a long while. I dig the really long songs with big instrumental breaks. They do take you on a bit of a journey, don't they? Kind of like listening to certain Zeppelin songs or Pantera's version of Planet Caravan.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/14/2008 02:23 AM EST

Ok, today's the day... Will we be listening to a live version of a new song tonight/tommorrow or what?

Posted by D-J @ 05/14/2008 09:22 AM EST

I have a question, do you think the clips shown are all one song? That would be awesome if so, shows alot of dynamics. The lead sounds like it fits with the second rhythm. Any thoughts?

Posted by Mark @ 05/14/2008 10:24 AM EST

Good question... I think the suicide clip is its own song and the rest is part of the Bow down song... Its hard to tell. I just REALLY hope the Bow down song is going to be released. If the metal gods shine upon us tonight or later this week, maybe we will find out!

Posted by D-J @ 05/14/2008 10:32 AM EST

I love the song Enter sandman its the best song ever!!!!!

Posted by Destiny @ 05/14/2008 11:15 AM EST

Mark- how do those clips show dynamics? Dynamics refer to the amount of sound being output - piano (soft) mezzoforte (medium) and forte (loud) as the basic unit of measurement. Those clips show a lot of stylistic variety which is nice, and also some nice rhythmic and modal contrast, but the dynamic is pretty much the same. Also, it looks like the guys are playing with some different textures which is a nice change from st. anger.

As with many others, Enter Sandman was the first Metallica song I ever heard, and I couldn't believe my ears... It was the most amazing thing I had ever heard. I couldn't get it out of my head, I didn't want it out of my head!

Has anyone heard a complete version of Dead Kennedy Rolls? I've been waiting for 6 years now to hear the whole thing.

Posted by Ice Nine @ 05/14/2008 01:14 PM EST

I maybe misused terms, but I meant if they are one song there are alot of changes in tempo. I loved like most of the old Metallica sound was the musical landscapes and the fast and slow. I think if it is one song, it shows they are fusing alot of changes into one song which is reminiscient of 80's version of Metallica. I love all Metallica but I would love to hear a modern version of Metallica playing that style.

I am now 35 and have been a Metallica fan since 1985. I remember the day Master of Puppets came out riding my bike to a record store that was about 5 or 6 miles away. I remember Justice coming out and actually skipping the day in High School to get it and the Black Album (came out when I was going to college)my friend worked in a record store and brought it over the day before it was released. I remember Load and Reload buying during midnight sales and buying St. Anger a day before it went on sale....I have seen them 35 times and met them on many occassions. At 35 I am still as excited to hear new Metallica as I was riding my bike to get Master. I am still in their fanclub and my wife thinks I am a dork for doing so. I love this period, the wait and then the pay off before each new release. I remember how I felt after hearing each new release for the first time I heard each new release. I have always loved Metallica, all styles, long hair, short hair, old and new. I am in business, clean cut, married with kids, college degree and can understand change and welcome it. Its like I have grown up and changed with Metallica and they have been such a huge part of my life. I recall in 85 when no one knew who Metallica was and they were underground. It was so cool to wear a Metallica shirt, like you carried the flag for this underground movement and no one knew who they were but you had a shirt with skulls on it:). I remember seeing them in 88 for the first time at Monsters of Rock and then seeing them on the Justice with 40000 people screaming die..... I remember watching them on the Grammys and the first showing of the video One....Anyways, my point is I am so excited to hear new music from them. I love and hate this anticipation. I also remember my mother telling me I will someday outgrow Metallica:)

Posted by Mark @ 05/14/2008 01:37 PM EST

Cool post Mark. I remember being told I'd outgrow Metallica and metal in general too. NEVER!!!

Posted by Seth @ 05/14/2008 01:48 PM EST

There's definitely something about this band that causes people to be extremely loyal. Them being so accessible to their fans may be a part of it. If you see someone on the street wearing a Metallica shirt and comment on it, the two of you instantly share that Metalli-bond. Its wierd, yet cool, too. You don't really see that with fans of other bands. There is a definitely a Metallica brotherhood and sisterhood too, for that matter. I remember being at Woodstock 99 a few years back, on Saturday, the day they played, seeing our fellow Metalli-brothers hours before the show wearing there shirts (as I probably was too, for that matter). I remember saying something like, "hey, just 6 hours to go!" and we were all giving each other some "hell yeah" and "metallica!" screams. I remember turning to people around me the first time I saw them and we were all singing Master of Puppets to the band and each other at the top of our lungs. Brotherhood sums it up.

Posted by D-J @ 05/14/2008 02:14 PM EST

Speaking of never outgrowing Metallica, can you imagine us all when we are in our 70s and 80s rocking out to Metallica?!!?! LOL I can't wait to see the reaction of my grandkids to grandpa headbanging.

"Don't throw tomatoes at me guys...

I just can't help feeling.... like the preview makes it sound.... weak. I know there are many more things to come. The "Bow Down" song in the preview is good, but I preferred either of the two "New Songs"... hell, I love their early work, but I don't want it to feel or sound forced. I would take an album full of Dead Kennedy Rolls and be happy." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A whole album of a song that you've only heard 39 seconds of? c'mon dude. The first new song was AWFUL, second one was decent. Judge not lest ye listen to the whole song. == Oh, and YES, I am throwing tomatoes at you left and right

Ok, doing a little math here... Its 5:00pm now, here in Florida... Metallica's show starts at 8:00pm (west coast time) from what I found online... Thats 11:00pm here... Give them an hour into the set before a new song debut's... Let's see, carry the one... Sooo, by midnight tonight here in Florida, Metallica should have played a new song... Let's see, that means it should be up on the internet by about 12:05 am local time here...

Posted by D-J @ 05/14/2008 05:02 PM EST

I am right there with you Mark. I am 37 and still love to hear them just as much as I did when I first heard them in the 80's. I remember finding a tape on the side of the road as I was riding my bike one day and it was Master of Puppets. I went home and put it in and have been a fan ever since.

Posted by Tim @ 05/14/2008 08:03 PM EST

OK, so taking the dangerous approach of extrapolating the sound/feel of an album from a few very short clips... the thing that strikes me that sets this apart from everything in the last 12 (maybe even 17) years is the feel of urgency in the songs. There was always a push forward in the songs prior to TBA, almost the need to rush the beat without rushing. This is almost the core of metal. Without that urgency, it's just loud rock. Lars seemed to develop a need to prove he could "groove" and hang back on the beat at some point during the TBA era, and while he was more or less successful at it, that's the most definite difference for me between what came before TBA and after. When Stanger got fast, it still felt controlled, whereas Damage Inc almost feels like at any moment they might start going faster. Covers like Helpless and the Prince are the epitome of this rush... can anyone listen to those songs while driving on an open road and not find themselves doing somewhere around 120mph? That's the feel of excitement that I remember, and I think I hear it in these clips.

Posted by Azrael @ 05/14/2008 08:27 PM EST

For me the second clip feels like only one song, probably the one they'll play live sometime this summer (hope it's gonna be tonight!). I was 6 years old (1986) when a guy left Iron Maiden Fear of the dark and Metallica Master of puppets at home (he was like 8 years older than me). I started to listen to those tapes and began with Iron Maiden. Then, when i put Metallica it was like a realy big ear orgasm. I still can remember the way i felt. I was listening to Europe and Def leopard so i knew i was loving rock music but Metallica just took control of my body, my soul...in the way that i can relate anything that happened to me to a metallica song! I listened to it until i bought The black album at 12 years old and saw my first show (Load) in 95 i guess. When i was listening albums before TBA, it was for the guitars, then in TBA, it's the drums that was obssessing me... Anyway, i can still see me in 50 years listening to them in my flying car...

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/14/2008 09:22 PM EST

Boys, you're not the only ones. I'm 34, I'm an Officer in the Royal Australian Navy and I have been a huge metallica fan since Justice. I have only seen them once (on the black album tour), but they don't get down here very often. My first tattoo was the "Scary Guy" off the Live Shit: Binge and Purge CD slick and most of the first songs I learned to play on guitar were from Justice. (Probably a bad move on my part - A beginning guitarist trying to learn to play Metallica... especially stuff off Justice), but anyway, I still love Metallica (my wife hates them) and I will ensure my son becomes a metal-head (he's 2 and he already loves playing my drum kit and guitars!!!!). I did lose faith in them over the last decade or so, but as I said in my earlier post, I think that the departure of Bob Rock and Jason, and the injection of new blood in the form of Rob and the divine hand of Rick Rubin will see the greatest metal band in history return in a big way. Fuck yeah, i can't wait.

For the record the new songs and new song 2 were AWFUL. Yes I said it terrible. Anyone who thinks that those are better than the clips.. well are ridiculous...

Posted by Nick @ 05/14/2008 11:34 PM EST

Azreal, I think you have a point on the holding back and back beat as opposed to Thrash having that almost out of control feel. I know what you mean.

Posted by Mark @ 05/14/2008 11:48 PM EST

Nick, I think you are wrong. Sorry you feel that way. Maybe it will grow on you.

Posted by Mark @ 05/14/2008 11:52 PM EST

I misread your comments Nick. I think the new songs were not as good as the new clip, so you are right. I dont think awful but but they needed alot of work.

Still waiting for them to get on stage...

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/15/2008 12:18 AM EST

Nick, I agree. New songs 1 and 2 are pretty ordinary. They sound like more of the same crap from St Anger. Those 2 songs (and the entire St. Anger album) need a lot more work to get them to a standard that is worth putting the name Metallica to. Let's hope that they were just getting something out of their system and they improve on it from here.

Spin are a bunch of idiots... Well, here it is, moment of truth. I just want to hear that "Bow down, sell your soul to me, I will set you free" tune in its entirety. I'll take anything new... Just not sure they'll do anything new tonight...

I think Spin is having "technical difficulties." From Metontour: Right now the band is pounding out Sanitarium! Before that, we had Creep, Fuel, and Bellz. "We haven't played in a long time" said James before Fuel. Oh, and what is that I see? A new guitar for James? Looks like a Truckster, but it's BLACK!

what bugs me is that they keep closing with seek and destroy...and well they keep playing the same songs, nothing new, they should take a look at what pearl jam or dream theater do, they change sets every night...well hopefully orion will come back to the set and justice will stay for the next us tour

From Billboard- Looks like a full U.S. tour beginning in October

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich revealed last night (May 14) during an intimate Los Angeles benefit concert that the band will follow the September release of its new, as-yet-untitled album with a tour in October.

"That was the first show of the tour," announced Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, who, along with his bandmates, shredded through a nearly two-hour set with such thrashy hits as "From Whom the Bell Tolls," "Fuel," "Master of Puppets," "...And Justice for All," "Enter Sandman," and "Seek and Destroy," among others.

The group didn't reveal any new material during its lengthy set. Nevertheless, "it feels good to play live again," singer/guitarist James Hetfield told a packed audience. "We haven't played here in a long time."

Well, to join the others above, I am 36, and have been hooked since hearing disposeable heroes in the car on the way to high school(fresh or soph year, don't remember).

Xino, look back to the last full tour's setlists, lots of variety. But I agree that S&D is not the best closer.

Posted by kurt @ 05/15/2008 02:24 PM EST

I think Seek is a TERRIBLE closer. Only thing that could be worse would be the 20 minute version they did on the black album tour in '92 & '93.

Posted by The General @ 05/15/2008 03:04 PM EST

What ever happened to closing with Battery, much better closer than SD. Dyers Eve would be solid too.

The wait is slowly sapping the life out of me... I want to do like Cartman in that episode of South Park where he couldn't wait for the Nintendo Wii to come out, so he froze himself with the aim of waking up when it came out... Of course, he woke up so far into the future there was only one Wii left - in a museum, and its power cable wasn't even compatible with the electrical outlets of the future...

Posted by D-J @ 05/15/2008 04:31 PM EST

yeah watch the video clips white flying v for fight fire with fire=badass. overall they sounded better than usual. i think seek and destroy is a good closer. how about no remorse and justice? i thought setlist was top-notch. 10/10 last caress too! anyways im gonna go buy a 5 dollar guitar and amp, where a 1976 blazer with pink sunglasses and try to get into SPIN magazine.

livemetallica is a great idea but how many live versions of creeping death do you need?

wonder if the white V is the old one with bullet marks, or a newer one? either way, I need a white V, that is toooo slick. Loved that they playd ...Justice. Bet you could get on the cover of spin with that get-up. how many kids were in that site last night? all of them. Looked like the metboard let out school early. Hey General, I thought we were all entitled to our own opinions? Anyway, what I meant was I would like to hear more songs in the same vein of "DKR". I feel there's a lot of Presidio stuff that would kick ass if they ever get around to releasing it.

and I get that you guys like the "Bow Down" song. It's cool, heavy and fast sure... but I hope there are cooler, heavier and faster songs waiting for us.

Posted by Tipper @ 05/15/2008 07:04 PM EST

well i know its kinda varied, but come on, opening with creaping death and closing with seek and destroy, i think they've done that since '06, fuel is another song im getting tired of, give me an M give me an E give me a T blah blah blah, i rather listen to the cool slide intro that kirk did back in the 90's, i know they have to play Enter sandman, sad but true, master, nothing else matters and one in every single show, but they should add some load/reload - garage inc stuff in there

Posted by xino @ 05/15/2008 07:56 PM EST

well as i said before, as long as they keep playing justice and they add orion when they tour the states in october im gonna be cool...

Posted by xino @ 05/15/2008 07:57 PM EST

Good call Xino... especially stuff from load... they have some awesome songs that would so wel live like the house that jack built or aint my bitch, especially the latter, I dont care what anyoen says, thats a heay fuckin tune. And on another note, I think that MEtallica has to play Fight fire with Fire everytime they enter a stage

Posted by Yukoner @ 05/15/2008 08:18 PM EST

Im not trying to be greedy, but i thought missionmetallica would be in full swing by now. bah. Also..about the setlists lately, i love all the old stuff...and i dont think they should play the "normal" load songs..but some rare ones would be good..like fixxxer, where the wild things are, the house jack built, cure. ya know..the ones they dont normally play live...i would definitely download some of that shit from livemetallica

Lets have a vote:

Which band is best?

Metallica

or

the Metallica that doesn't exist

Posted by Tony @ 05/16/2008 03:25 AM EST

Suffering from a little insomnia now, since I fell asleep on the couch ealier and can't get back to sleep...anyway, I'd love to hear more Fight Fire w/ Fire and Trapped Under Ice. I say maybe start the setlist out with FFWF instead of Creeping Death. Don't get me wrong, I love that song, but I think it would be good to try that as an opener. And if they do some FFWF, bring in a real acoustic like The Unforgiven. I'd also like to hear some The House that Jack Built, too. Maybe some Fixxxer. As far as a closer, I think Whiplash fits perfectly. It has tons of energy and and the lyrics at the end are very fitting. Just my thoughts, however. Hopefully we'll have an album title and see the cover of the album soon.

I seen the stuff from the other night on Youtube. I think it is pretty good, they sound good and I don't think any hardcore Metallica fan such as myself from early 80's should feel these guys are losing it or lost it. They are master's at what they do, this is what makes them Metallica.

I often wondered if they came out with a first album like Load and started their journy from there.. and worked backwards to Kill being the newest album, would everyone wonder why they gave up the rich sound the mature sound actually to be thrashy, would they be picked at for trying to be thrashy?

I myself would have thought that if it was all reversed in the style's they created that this would be really cool to hear they go all wild and release style from the first few albums and be bold and daring to go in that direction.

Posted by Inker @ 05/16/2008 11:41 AM EST

Ok so y don't they open with Fight Fire with Fire????!!!! It sounds great and they could use the intro.

idk i think there is different levels of maturity in music. for example if you see a 19 yr old boy band singing please dont go girl..o-k. 40 yr old boy band singing please dont go girl..creepy. i think it kinda applies to thrash metal too. metallica 19 yrs old -jump in the fire...o-k. 44 yrs old..grow up. my point is i hope they find a medium and it doesnt sound forced.
you dont wanna be that one creepy old guy in the back of the hip-hop club-weird. at the local bar-o-k

Ulrich promises 'dynamic' new Metallica album
by Gary Graff - May. 16, 2008 09:04 AM
Billboard.com
DETROIT - Metallica is "a couple of nips and tucks" away from completing its next album, which is still on target for a September release, according to drummer Lars Ulrich.

During a conference call on May 15 to promote this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival, which Metallica will headline on June 13, Ulrich told reporters that the group hopes to wrap up work on the album in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday. Metallica recently met with a graphic designer to begin planning the package, though there's no confirmed title for the album yet and the songs still have working names.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the 90s, (which) were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment - and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

Ulrich said Metallica came into the project with 26 songs, which were knocked down to 14 when the group started working with producer Rick Rubin. There are now 11 slated for the album, though Ulrich said "length issues" might mean one more has to be eliminated.

"These are long songs ... we're talking seven-minute, eight-minute, nine-minute nutty ... songs," Ulrich revealed. "We don't make them long or short on purpose; you just kind of do what feels natural. We're not really gonna edit them, (so) we're gonna lose another one at some point in the next month or so and probably end up with 10."

Ulrich described the material as "definitely pretty all over the place. There's a lot of variation, a lot of fast, slow, melodic ... kind of hardcore, nutty, super-fast speed stuff. It's a little more like how some of the earlier records were a little more dynamic within the songs."

Ulrich was not sure how much of the new material Metallica will preview on the road this summer, although he said that "by the time we come to Bonnaroo, hopefully we'll have some new stuff ready."

The group is playing radio festivals May 16-17 in Arizona and California before heading to Europe for an annual festival run that will be interrupted by Bonnaroo and the lone Ozzfest date on Aug. 9 in Frisco, Texas. An extensive North American tour is expected to follow the album's release.

Does anyone have a picture of the new "skull-with-wings" sign on the amps of metallica? looks awesome, maybe it 's a little preview of the new artwork!?

Posted by Juztice @ 05/16/2008 04:26 PM EST

says james: 'We have a tendency to rehearse way too much'. and still lars manages to butcher the second half of 'One', and doesn't play any fill worthy of the name in 'Fight Fire'. I love Metallica, really, but Lars needs to up his game. May be at 44-45, playing the old stuff is just too physically demanding. And one other thing: long songs doesn't equal good songs - when referring to the new album.

Posted by toolish @ 05/16/2008 04:33 PM EST

What gives??? Lars can't seem to get thru an interview without using the word 'Nutty'!!!

Toolish- i totally agree. However, you have guys like Dave Lombardo playing similiar, if not slightly faster stuff, at the same age. Lars just needs to freaking practise more.

Personally, I think Lars and the rest of the boys would benefit from playing shorter live sets. No one needs to hear enter sandman again. Or NEM. Play a 90 minute set that's fast and straight to the point. Play it QUICKLY. James would be able to use his voice more, Lars wouldn't get as tired. It would be great.

WTF ?! 2 shows done and no new songs ?!

Posted by $trangeR @ 05/17/2008 05:23 AM EST

In a couple of posts up this page, Lars is quoted as saying by the time they come to Bonnaroo they'll hopefully have some new stuff ready to play live... Soooo, thats about a month from now. These shows this week seem to have been added fairly last minute, so likely they didn't have the time to practice the new songs the way they wanted to.

Juzstice, here's a picture of the Vulturous logo for you: http://www.encycmet.com/news/2007-02-12c.shtml Sorry, forgot to put that up on my last post.

Why are you guys all caught up on Lars being some monster drummer? He's never been one, and he's never going to be. He is a great rhythm section leader- a guy who lays down the tempo and the beat, and stresses the beats that need to be stressed. He's never been the Neal Peart type, and that's ok- because you don't need to play a billion notes to be a good drummer. And by the way- the fills on Fight Fire with Fire were never really that great in the first place.

heard Hetfield was playing one of these at the next show..... http://cgi.ebay.com/Limited-Edition-Gibson-Reverse-V-White-Only-300-Made_W0QQitemZ140232370049QQihZ004QQcategoryZ2384QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Posted by The General @ 05/17/2008 12:16 PM EST

well, I heard Battery from that show and while the band sounded good... the drumming was awfully simple. I'm not comparing it to the studio version either... I'm talking about compared to their tours in 2003 and 2007. The newest version of Battery has so many missing drum parts. I'm not complaining, it's the truth.

Posted by Tipper @ 05/17/2008 01:03 PM EST

General, that is the ugliest guitar I have seen in a long time! Looks like a Dean guitar that somebody put together blindfolded! In 2003 I pretty much given up on Lars as a drummer, because apparently he has given up practicing and maintaining his craft. He's always been sloppy live, but he would at least have his moments of brilliance. Now he is dull at best.

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/17/2008 06:22 PM EST

Does anybody else hear the fan at the beginning of the 2nd Bridge School show yelling "LARZZZ...YOU SUCK DICKKKK!"? I had it playing in my car today and laughed my ass off when I heard it. The boys are pretty cool to leave it in there--ego could have easily edited that clown out.

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/17/2008 06:28 PM EST

Hey check out on Metontour pics from KFMA Day.James has a guitar for Cliff. It has a Cross with "Burton" written on it,To Live Is To Die written below and dates(probably birth and death,it's not clear)above.Very Cool!God Bless Cliff Burton!

Posted by Jesius @ 05/17/2008 06:51 PM EST

seems like I have seen that Burton cross before......does Hetfield have that tatoo on his back or arm? Yeah EET, that guitar is disgusting. Alomst too gross to make fun of. SEEK was the encore again, they must love playing that song live. I guess its alright, but a little variety would be nice. Whiplash would be such a better closer, just like the justice tour. WHERE IS LEPER MESSIAH???????

James: "this next one... I don't know what album its off of. what is it? what? Oh yeah... Justice. I think I had that one.." Motherfucker! I don't know about anyone else but I was so hoping he was doing a little fuck around before playing a new song. But nope, Harvester.

Posted by xino @ 05/18/2008 02:01 AM EST

anytime you watch Metallica follow other bands live, it always is such a reminder of how much they really blow every other band away when sharing the same stage. Metallica made that their own concert by the end of the night. If a portion of that crowd wasn't there to see Metallica at the beginning, they fuckin' were by the end. Can't wait until October.

Posted by Blaster of Muppets @ 05/18/2008 02:10 AM EST

Sweet!! KROQ is pimp for streaming the concerts!

Posted by Metal in AR @ 05/18/2008 02:10 AM EST

Not the most varied setlist, but that was to be expected. Still, Harvester and So What! were nice additons. Overall, I enjoyed it. It definitely got me stoked to see them when they come around my neck of the woods.

Posted by Trace @ 05/18/2008 02:33 AM EST

Blaster, two things.

1. Harvestor, damn it?! I mean, I understand the disappointment in no new song, but Harvestor of Sorrow fucking kicks major major ass!

2. Yeah, I agree with you on how they blow all the previous bands away. I remember seeing them in Orlando with Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. I remembered thinking, wow, these guys are pretty good, they are new, etc, I hope Metallica is up to par on this. Then of course Metallica came out and fucking destroyed Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. I still feel guilty to this day for ever having such a thought.

This concert was one of the best Metallica shows I have seen in years. Waaaay better than their Load and Reload shows. They owned big time. Did anyone else notice that last riff they played? I didn't recognize it! Was it from the new album???

Posted by D-J @ 05/18/2008 02:34 AM EST

The riff after Seek? They've played that for a while now. I hope that ends up on an album someday. I think they should add I Disappear to the list and Shortest Straw.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/18/2008 09:24 AM EST

that riff is an acdc riff so nope not going on the new album

Posted by Metalupyourass @ 05/18/2008 09:37 AM EST

im glad i got to see them 92,94,96,97,00 cause james voice is gone.i almost cried watching that show last night.

Posted by sean @ 05/18/2008 11:19 AM EST

really, it was bad? and noticable?

Posted by The General @ 05/18/2008 11:34 AM EST

Thingy, that's the riff from AC/DC's "Let There Be RocK".

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/18/2008 11:50 AM EST

I disagree. I think his voice was at his worst during the Load, Reload, Anger tours. Yes, there was still some stuff that wasn't great, like Enter Sandman, but I thought he did the best he's done in a long time on MANY of the songs. I was impressed. The Unforgiven was BADASS, period. It was cool seeing him play the acoustic guitar for the chorus and his regular guitar for the verses, just like he did on Live Shit: Binge and Purge. Wherever I May Roam, Fade To Black, One, Battery, and So What (a VERY nice surprise) were all really good, I thought.

Posted by D-J @ 05/18/2008 11:54 AM EST

james voice was really good compared to the 04 shows, hell even better than last year tour...

Posted by xino @ 05/18/2008 01:08 PM EST

Hey there nancy boys. The KFMA concert was awesome... Apocolyptica was kinda cool, did some sepultura, metallica covers and originals, but it was worth the 800 mile drive to see it. Metallica sounded great, and yeah, you bunch of nancies will pick apart little things like the drum breakdown in seek and destroy 3 minutes and 33 seconds and 1/8th into it, but fuck it. Metallica ruled! Kirk was on fire... The set was fucking loud, and I have bruises on my chest from the kick drum! Oh, funny side note, on the way in, I got out of the car to piss... I saw a snake, scared the shit out of me, ran back... On my way, I ran into a cactus. I had this warm feeling on my left leg, thought I pissed myself... Nope, blood from running into the cactus!

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 05/18/2008 05:00 PM EST

scared of a fucking snake? who's the nancy-boy? just kidding dude. I bet that hurt.

Did anyone read the Weenie Roast thread on the official message board? That thing was ridiculous with all the whining that was going on.

Posted by Trace @ 05/18/2008 11:28 PM EST

So anyone here have any idea when we might finally hear a new song live? I was looking at their tour dates and I am thinking they will probably debut a song on the second leg of their tour starting mid-July. My thinking is that they'll be taking a break for a month from mid-June to mid-July, so they may exhaustively rehearse whatever new song or songs they want to play live for when they start back up in mid-July, not to mention the fact that they will be just 6 weeks away from September, the new album's release month. Honestly, I hope I am wrong and they debut something before then, but they may not want to start anything too soon for fear of it being "old" by the time the album comes out.

Just watched a bunch of the songs on youtube... James voice is def. improved from the past 4 years. He seems to have it a little bit more under control right now. But it is just a couple shows in...

Posted by Nick @ 05/19/2008 11:46 AM EST

I picked up Kill 'Em All yesterday on vinyl and it will remain unopened as a collectible. Yeah, the official metboard is pretty annoying, but at times, it's somewhat good. I wonder when we'll see some more clips from Mission Metallica. It's been a week now and not much has changed other than seeing a video of the fans meeting them. On a side note, I was on Metallica's website and went to Media/Photos and they have a section listed for 2010-12.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/19/2008 01:19 PM EST

Im pretty sure Lars said in a recent interview .. i think it was conducted at the first gig that new material wouldnt be around till about Bonnaroo..im about 80% sure thats what he said

Posted by Mark @ 05/19/2008 01:35 PM EST

Any person that doesn't think James has gotten his voice back, listen to him singing the acoustic version of All Within My Hands from the Bridge Benefit... This is from late last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uehfBvwvy_Q

Posted by D-J @ 05/19/2008 01:42 PM EST

He DOES NOT have is voice back. But his voice IS WAAAAYYYYYY BETTER than the past handful of years.

Posted by Nick @ 05/19/2008 03:14 PM EST

Oh I agree completely. I never meant to imply he has his voice back to the way he was back in the 80s and early 90s. I am merely trying to dispel these idiots that say he still can't sing at all, when clearly, he is doing so much better than he was doing a few years back. That video clearly proves that. Although, it seems like the one song he has never been able to really do too well on is Enter Sandman, which sucks for me because that was the one that originally opened my eyes to these guys in the first place. In fact, it was James' vocals that really sealed the deal. I remember the first time I heard that chorus. Wow...

Posted by D-J @ 05/19/2008 03:27 PM EST

Even on Hetfield's worst day of singing, he's still WAY better than Mustaine.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/19/2008 03:40 PM EST

I can't believe that Lars just changed the color of the drums instead of changing the drum-set, maybe expanding it.. I really hope that the drums wont be weak on the album.

Posted by V @ 05/19/2008 04:02 PM EST

Just watched Unforgiven at KROQ.I think that James can't sing it nowadays, although the bridge school performance was decent.I listened and the 2007 performances and I hoped that since his voice sounds a lot better this year(it really does!) he could make it but...Too bad though!

Posted by Jesius @ 05/19/2008 04:06 PM EST

It's important to remember that the Weenie Roast is not an ideal situation for sound. That many bands on the same stage, rapid setups, not enough time for proper sound checks... I agree that James doesn't tear into his voice like he used to, but this is probably one of the worst possible setups for him to get the best vocal performance. How many people on here remember the Grammy performance of One, where his voice was basically destroyed from the tour, and he couldn't sing the slow parts at all? So it's not like this sort of thing is new, it was happening back in 89, too. The guy abuses his voice, live with it. We're all singing so loud we can rarely hear it anyway.

Posted by Azrael @ 05/19/2008 09:58 PM EST

...and too busy headbanging to watch... I remember the second time I saw them live, at one point, I was like, shit, I need to stop headbanging for a minute because I am missing the show!

Posted by D-J @ 05/19/2008 10:18 PM EST

Remember too that this was the second night in a row to sing. He didn't have a day to recover.

Posted by Metal in AR @ 05/19/2008 10:29 PM EST

I agree with you guys, but I'm reffering only for Unforgiven. He changed the chorus a bit and he struggles to sing the verse.I don't think that has to do with the Winie Roast cause 2007 performances are almost the same

Posted by Jesius @ 05/20/2008 06:45 AM EST

well to defend james now..you go to a concert and scream for 2 hours and cant speak for 2 days..try doing that for 26 years straight..=james hetfield= and wen i say his voice sux it duz compared to 92 but it is still better than jack white, dexter or most anyone elses live.

Posted by sean @ 05/20/2008 10:11 AM EST

atleast it's real, would you rather have him lipsing??

Posted by Tony @ 05/20/2008 10:19 AM EST

God Mustaine is a terrible singer.... James Hetfield's voice also sealed the deal for me. It is unique and different from most of the rest. His voice separates Metallica from a lot of metal bands. Other metal bands vocals are some of the reason I only like a select few other than Metallica.

Posted by Nick @ 05/20/2008 11:06 AM EST

Anyways, this Mission Metallica site blows eh?

Posted by Nick @ 05/20/2008 11:07 AM EST

for some reason the "suicide" lyrics remind me of something Dave Mustain would right...

Posted by Iwasbanedhereonce @ 05/20/2008 11:10 AM EST

Nick, yeah, there's some real good music out there by other bands, yet the vocalists suck. The other one is when a band covers Metallica and the music sounds pretty good, sometimes even giving it a unique twist, only to be ruined by the singer. Having said that, I have to say my favorite Metallica cover was Drowning Pool doing Creeping Death. Even though Dave Williams' (RIP Dave) voice is nothing like James, I still thought he did a great job. I was fortunate enough to hear them perform it at Ozzfest when they played a few years back. In fact, it was a few weeks before he passed on to that great big metal gig in the sky. I like Disturbed's Fade To Black and even Korn's One, also.

Posted by D-J @ 05/20/2008 12:09 PM EST

anyone downloaded one of the new shows from livemetallica.com? sound the same as usual? Thinking about grabbing up the one with FFWF w/ Flea. Why all this jive about jaymz' voice. It sounds decent. I mean if you could capture the vocals from the '89 Justice Tour in a bottle, and let go whenever they played a show, that would be a perfect world, but in a perfect world we are not. Korn singing ONE was absolutely horrendous.....1. he didn't know the lyrics and 2. it sucked

Posted by The General @ 05/20/2008 12:28 PM EST

all this being said, James voice is the perfect trademark voice for heavy metal. No matter where you are, you alway know James voice and it's what makes Metallica Metallica. So his voice is getting a little weaker or takes a little longer to recoup, I still couldn't think of anyone else I would rather have growling into that mic. Plus hearing those clips from the new album... hearing James yell "BOW DOWN! BREAK DOWN!" Man, gives me chills.

DAMN bring on that next album!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/20/2008 01:11 PM EST

Yeah, James said "we want excellent" in an interview, and I think thats exactly what we are gonna get. I REALLY REALLY dig his vocals in those new album clips, too. The whole "Bow down, sell your soul to me, I will set you free" lyrics... man, I can't wait to hear that AND Kirk's shredding tear up the radio airways. People out there are gonna get a full on assault and reminder of what REAL metal sounds like... Everything else will seem trivial by comparison. I'd love to hear some Hetfield growls on the new album too. If the rest of the album sounds like whats in those clips, I'm gonna be exhausted my first day of listening to this album. Then I'll lay my head down and dream sweet metal dreams...

Posted by D-J @ 05/20/2008 02:13 PM EST

DJ, I saw DP do creeping death at the ozzfest and it was decent, in combination with the nutties tearing up the sod and mud behind the seats and a very large and messy battle began(tweeter center in mansfield, MA). I did not care for Korn's version of One. I love the powerful, and soulful, and angry vibe in James vocals on all mets recording(maybe not as much on KEA when he was a youngster still). Do I care if he can always carry it live? NO. Why? Cause I've been to many a live gig from blues rock, to rockNroll, to the nastiest metal around, and very few of the vocalists can consistently bring it live.

Posted by kurt @ 05/20/2008 02:46 PM EST

Did you guys notice the links for winning backstage passes that was supposedly up on missionmetallica.com before their three concerts last week? I have checked that site almost on a daily basis and I never saw any links. On the metallicabb boards, someone won passes and was posting about it. Others like me was like 'how?' and a few people mentioned the links. I don't get it. Am I blind or something?

Posted by D-J @ 05/20/2008 03:52 PM EST

The links to the contests were in the exact same place as the "share their experience" link is right now. There were three separate contests. Then it went down to two and then they were all gone. If I remember correctly they were up for about a day and half.

Posted by Serbitar @ 05/20/2008 03:57 PM EST

I also noticed those links, we will probably see more from those contests soon.. and hopefully some more previews verrry soon! and by the way, TTTSNB thanks for the link to the vulturous picture :)

Posted by Juztice @ 05/20/2008 05:14 PM EST

the vibe i get from the new clips is if dave mustaine rewrote the guitar parts for reload and james redid the lyrics. that might offend some people using that analogy but to me thats awesome.

Posted by sean @ 05/20/2008 05:50 PM EST

You're absolutely right, it does offend some people... heheheh...

Posted by D-J @ 05/20/2008 07:54 PM EST

All I know is that I signed up using my e-mail to Mission Metallica and they haven't sent ANYthing out. In fact, if I had not checked in here and other places on the net, I wouldn't have even known about the trailers. WTF?!

Sounds like somebody dropped the ball with this idea. JITS was waaaaaaay better! At least we got something for our wait, those 5-6 years ago. Now we get..... a trailer..... for a website..... that does nothing! Okay, well it does show me a trailer...... for a website....

all I'm saying is that the album is pretty much done. It should have been done a while back. Why does it take SO LONG for a Metallica album to come out? Fuck the marketing, they don't need it!

Posted by Tipper @ 05/20/2008 08:17 PM EST

Regardging James' voice, I'm a big fan of both Bob Dylan and Neil Young. If I can deal with them, I can handle anything James throws my way.

Posted by Trace @ 05/20/2008 08:49 PM EST

I'm curious about the Unique Live Tracks link...wondering what that's all about considering they have the LiveMetallica Site and also the Vault for which nothing "new" has been added in quite a while...I guess we'll find out sometime soon.

Posted by Crushing Metal Strikes @ 05/20/2008 10:44 PM EST

What I don't get is Metallica has more than God, soooo here's an idea... Hire someone full time for like $40k a year (a drop in the bucket) to put together weekly videos for the site. I mean, all they have to do is point the finger at someone and say, do it. I mean, why aren't we seeing more content? I really honestly doubt that even later in July and August that we will get frequent updates on that site. We *might* get 1 weekly update IF we're lucky. I'd LOVE for them to prove me wrong.

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 12:23 AM EST

Meant to say Metallica has more money than God.

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 02:17 AM EST

I would kinda figure they would have someone to do that already to be honest with you man...and $40K, i think they could afford more than that, haha

Posted by Mark @ 05/21/2008 02:29 AM EST

I am sure they could afford more, but why spend more when its not necessary? Actually, they need to just hire someone full time from now until September. Clearly, the person doing the updates on that site is either 1. working for Warner, or 2. one of the regulars that already work for Metallica that already have other responsibilities.

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 07:09 AM EST

I work in a secondary school and pupils here create much more interactive and better looking websites than the bloody MissionMetallica.com.

I think they ballsed the project up big time...

Posted by $trangeR @ 05/21/2008 08:57 AM EST

It seems that it hasn't really yet begun, MM. I just hope it gets going SOON.

Posted by caspian @ 05/21/2008 11:25 AM EST

I agree there is a lack of updates, but I think the purpose of the site is just to provide snippets of new material. Since the album will not drop until September at the earliest, I imagine it will be released slowly to us over months rather then weeks and certainly not days. They know we are chomping at the bit to hear anything new and I am sure the lack of information is on purpose. You are angry now but once that new video pops up, you will be all over it. Sounds corny, but I played in a band and a band that was signed once told me never give them what they want, always leave them wanting more. There is alot of truth to that. They are not going to hand out full versions of songs anytime soon.

Posted by Mark @ 05/21/2008 11:58 AM EST

Ain't that the truth... But what would rock big time is if they would play a medley, just select pieces, of 3 or 4 new songs on their upcoming tour. That will NEVER happen, though, but it'd be a great way to preview new material to the fans, so we get the overall vibe of the new album, but while still teasing us at the same time and not giving us a whole new song...

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 12:04 PM EST

Posted by new vid @ 05/21/2008 02:23 PM EST

I just checked and it's right under the preview bar. It says 1st fly on the wall. I agree it is the riff from the "new song" reworked. It seems slowed down and has Kirk's wah all over it.

Posted by Dave @ 05/21/2008 02:32 PM EST

It is a cool riff. On Metallica.com there are already people bashing it. It seems they are showing old footage of writing these songs so this riff would sound much different on the album. I still love to hear, it sounds like Load, no like Garage Inc, no like St Anger...Duhhhhh...Those were written by Metallica, what else would it sound like? Cracks me up.

Posted by Mark @ 05/21/2008 03:25 PM EST

Ah HA!!!!! No wonder I haven't been seeing these updates... Apparently, the site is not Firefox friendly... The 1st Fly On The Wall tab does not show up in Firefox...

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 03:29 PM EST

...Just a thought... If they keep adding new tabs like that every time a new clip comes up, they're gonna run outta space. Head over to www.kroq.com and watch James' interview with one of KROQ's deejays. Its about 12 minutes long, I think. Also, James mentions they intend on updating the site every day with 20 second clips. This 1st fly on the wall is about 20 seconds, so who knows, maybe this is the start of getting something new at least every other day or so...

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 03:34 PM EST

Pretty cool James interview from kroq. It looks like he got the "M" logo put on his right hand between his thumb and index finger.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/21/2008 04:38 PM EST

Yeah, James has been getting pretty crazy with the tattoos. I like the spiderweb on his elbow.

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 04:45 PM EST

I have firefox, it shows up on firefox. They changed the tunning and the way the riff is played. Sounds less St. Angerish this way, which is great. I strongly believe that is the only part of that song really coming back... also a great thing...

I got firefox and it works fine for me. That's definitely a re-working of the new song riff. I like it much better though, it's a lot less muddy in a different tuning. I know some people are gonna shit on Kirk about how much he <3s his wah-wah, but I thought it sounded great here. If the mission of mission metallica is to get me pumped for the new album, consider it mission accomplished.

New contest winner vids for KFMA Day and Wiltern are up. Laughed my ass off at James when he Kirk and Rob pose for a phot with a kid and James says "it's our new drummer!".

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/21/2008 05:54 PM EST

I meant KFMA and KROQ Weenie Roast.

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/21/2008 05:55 PM EST

Noticed James was wearing a Cliff shirt in one of the videos, too. Also homage to Cliff on one of his guitars. Very cool!

I wish they would of put the date on the clip or hope they do on future ones so we actually know when it was filmed...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/21/2008 06:35 PM EST

ALSO!!! That "M" they show at the end of the clip... is that new???? I don't think I have seen that style before... I brought it up before but nobody responded to my thread. Could it be a sneak at how the new font is gonna be?

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/21/2008 06:37 PM EST

NCNG, no that M has been around since the St Anger rehearsals. You can see it on the amps.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/21/2008 07:00 PM EST

Yeah, its working fine on my Firefox here at home. If I go in to work tomorrow and it still isn't working on my Firefox there, then my Firefox must have some issues. I am pretty sure I have the latest version. On the other hand, maybe they had to make some changes to get it to display on Firefox and they were still working on that earlier in the day when I checked it... Interesting...

Posted by D-J @ 05/21/2008 07:54 PM EST

James mentioned in the KFMA contest winner vid that there would be something "really cool coming out soon" when talking about kids bringing their Guitar Hero guitars to be autographed. Maybe a Guitar Hero Truckster or a Guitar Hero diamond plated explorer?

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/21/2008 11:08 PM EST

So I am thinking... yeah we are all giving the Mission Metallica site shit cause it doesn't show much, but think about it... WE ALL will be thanking them that they didn't throw too much out there when it actually comes out. Yeah we wanna hear more, but it's best not to hear too much. It's like Mom telling you hey your X-mass gifts are in my closet so DO NOT go in there.. what do u wanna do? You wanna go in there!

Posted by Nick @ 05/22/2008 12:22 AM EST

Yes, Nick, this is true. HOWEVER... all I want to hear before Sept is the following:

1) a single

2)one B-side/extra track/itunes exclusive

Everything else, let me hear when it's ready

Posted by Gino @ 05/22/2008 01:53 AM EST

Does anybody else besides me think that Lars is a wanker? Yeah, sure he's a good drummer, but man he talks some shit. Whether it's watching one of Metallica's vids/docos or looking at the new stuff on Mission Metallica, where he keeps wanking on about the fucking click track, most of the time, I'm watching him and thinking "Lars, just shut the fuck up and play the fucking drums". Why the fuck isn't James the band spokesperson anyway?

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/22/2008 02:37 AM EST

p.s. Sorry about the multiple posts, this site is going ape shit at the moment. It's not my fault, I promise!!!!

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/22/2008 02:40 AM EST

Sounds like they're using the main riff from New Song #1. :(

Posted by caspian @ 05/22/2008 02:40 AM EST

yeah, i don't know about that riff modified like that, i mean it sounds cool, but not cool enough to be on a metallica album...on a side note i saw dream theater live last night and opeth opened for them...what a great metal band, any opeth fans here? i may buy something, don't know where to start though

Posted by xino @ 05/22/2008 09:51 AM EST

Hey Xino, big Opeth Fan here. You should Satrt either with ORCHID or BLACKWATER PARK, great Albums! Peace

Posted by EPDA @ 05/22/2008 10:04 AM EST

I am really confused why people hate the New Song riff? I think it kicks ass and would hold up on any Metallica album. I think the solo in the new song, that riff and the rambler portion are great as well as excellent double bass. I think the not the end part and the verses are weak...Now they have said they used parts of these songs in other songs and it is one riff. I find it almost frustrating how critical people are on something that might be 10 seconds of a CD.

Posted by Mark @ 05/22/2008 11:54 AM EST

yeah blackwater park is good. missionmetallica-ugh why dont they just show james sitting there with headphones on humming the new album. they are trying too hard to give us alot of nothing.

Posted by sean @ 05/22/2008 11:57 AM EST

love opeth...blackwater park, as has been mentioned, is probably the best starting place (also where i started, and my favorite), i love seeing them live if for nothing else listening to akerfeldt talk in between songs, dude is hilarious but so understated

Posted by akerfeldt @ 05/22/2008 01:20 PM EST

yeah, the dude is funny, im gonna see them tonight as well...big DT fan

I was a member of the club a few years back, but let it lapse as there was nothing really new happening at the time. The up side is that I got to go backstage to meet James and Jason (back in 1998... shit thats 10 years ago... man I'm getting old... I'm 30 now.) Those of us that got to go back stage, the chosen ones, man, we were flipping out when we got selected. As we were walking back stage, we turned to the crowd and we were like "fuck you, and fuck you, and fuck you, and fuck you, we're going to see METALLICA!!! WOOHOOO!!!" Luckily the crowd was too far away to hear our taunts. Jason was actually really really cool - he really took his time and didn't rush it, you know, he'd make eye contact with you, ask you how you were doing, shake your hand, all that. MTV popped in when James came out, so he was kinda distracted with that and he moved through the line a little quicker than Jason did. At another concert, I got a guitar pick thrown out to the crowd by Kirk, although it wasn't the one he was actually playing with. So looks like I still need to meet Lars and Rob!!!

I was wondering, do any of you read any H.P. Lovecraft, considering The Call of Ktulu was named after one of his stories, and The Thing That Should Not Be is based on Shadow Over Innsmouth, I think? Actually it might have been based on The Doom That Came To Sarnath. Anyways, this site has all the Lovecraft short stories on it. http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/
There's a lot of really good stories there. Some of the really short short ones that I think are pretty cool is Memory, The White Ship, and The Cats of Ulthar. Some lengthier but also really good ones are The Call of Cthulhu, At The Mountains of Madness, Pickman's Model, and The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. Cool, freaky, creepy stuff...

platinum ? thats like a porn site. call me old school but i'll buy the 12 dollar cd.

Posted by sean @ 05/23/2008 04:11 PM EST

the record company is supposed to pay for the promo.

Posted by sean @ 05/23/2008 04:12 PM EST

absolutely, sean.

Also: opeth sucks massive dong.

Posted by caspian @ 05/24/2008 03:07 AM EST

Yea- and hey, you know Sean, the company should just give you the CD for free, and then throw in a bunch of other stuff- that's a good business model.

Geez- it's a platinum site - they deliver the CD to you, and they give a bunch of other exclusive content. They basically let you be a part of the Metclub (plus CD), by joining the platinum section. If you're already a member, then don't join, unless you want the CD delivered on the day it's released.

You know, record companies have to make money. They're the ones that supply millions of dollars to build studios, run them, and record and produce artists. I just think you guys need to suck it up and quit bitching.

Posted by Chris @ 05/24/2008 12:19 PM EST

chris im not talking about pre-ordering a cd, heres a metaphor for you buddy ...pre-order a book from amazon for 14.95 but for 99.95 you can see the author sitting at a type writer in his underwear and once a week in the video clip they will flash a fucking chapter title on the screen. wheres my credit card and my hand lotion...fuck that.

Posted by sean @ 05/24/2008 10:07 PM EST

Record companies aren't the ones that build studios, and most bands have to pay for their own recordings. they're right charging for the CDs, obviously, but charging for some extra special promo? That's a cash grab if I've ever seen one, and I really wish Metallica would see sense and get rid of the platinum thing already, as it's not good for their image.

Posted by caspian @ 05/25/2008 12:49 AM EST

Metallica is not stupid going with the platinum thing, in fact i think it's a realy good idea. The ones that are stupid are those who gonna get this platinum membership. Every single enterprise is looking to charge extra fees anywhere and music band are in a "record industry" witch means that they are there to make some cash (for them or for someone else like music companies). Try to get an account at any bank that will give you a number of transaction for free, impossible... At least Metallica let you experience something that may be will be worth it and they don't ask you money, and at the end, you will be the one that'll choose if you're going to buy the album or not!

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/25/2008 10:55 AM EST

i dont get all the fuzz about this, i t clearly states IF A LOT JUST ISN'T ENOUGH....and if the fee is for 99 dollars, u got this - the album (13.00) live downloads (approximately 10 bucks each) download of the album at midnight (13.00) contests to go and meet them (priceless...hehe) ringtones (2 dollars each?) and they still have more stuff to announce, plus i believe that the album is gonna be delivered in the format of ur choice...so i would pay the 99 dollars to have the complete experience, of course im a metclub member so i'll just buy the album (btw i already got my code....how fucking awesome!)

Posted by xino @ 05/25/2008 11:41 AM EST

The album would cost maybe $6 to distribute to each person, tops. Albums don't cost a lot to produce or to post. "Format of your choice"? Unlikely they'll be sending out vinyl to anybody. The ringtones are completely pointless, seeing as soon as it's released you'll be able to put the songs onto your phone and use them that way. The contests are good but also cost nothing at all to promote. Also, we're not talking about some dirt poor garage band here- we're talking about an extremely rich band and a rather massive record label. Paying for a pre order or midnight download is valid, but you should not have to pay for the promotional stuff (i.e vids, ringtones), simple as that.

I can understand where the record company is coming from- they want to make a buck, fine. However, Metallica were always a very fan-friendly band (ever heard of the reason behind the naming of the $5.95 garage days EP?) with a fair bit of integrity behind them- except for the commercial (yet still awesome) s/t, Metallica have never done anything I would classify as a "cash grab".. and that is exactly what this platinum package is.

Posted by caspian @ 05/25/2008 11:53 AM EST

Caspian and Sean- you're both idiots.

"Albums don't cost a lot to produce"???? How stupid are you? Have you ever actually been in a recording studio? I'm guessing not because that is one of the most retarded posts in the history of mankind. Why don't you actually take a studio tour one day and see how much it costs to run a studio on a weekly basis AND produce a major album.

And Sean- nice metaphor- obviously you like to jerk it to novelists- whatever floats your boat. You still fail to realize that Metallica are giving you EXTRAS. You don't have to buy it. You don't have to utilize their service. They are saying that some people like to get closer than the average fan, and they are letting them. Do you honestly think Metallica is trying to make money off of this website? The charge for the platinum level will hardly make them enough money to pay for the webmaster running the site, let alone the amount of video and audio editing that is going to have to go on.

But please, keep bitching...your ignorance is astounding. I love it when people that have no concept of how the music industry works, or who have never recorded a CD, start espousing their ignorance to others.

Posted by Caspian @ 05/25/2008 12:50 PM EST

And see, I even used your name on my post Caspian- so you can, for once, not sound like a complete idiot.

Posted by Chris @ 05/25/2008 12:51 PM EST

i am co-founder of soulx studio in hudson valley ny. i charge 100 per hour of recording time depending on equiptment inventory. BUT chris ill cut you a deal..an extra 200 ill film it and you can have your very own flash website with a option of platinum membership for exclusive behind the scenes access..this way you can rip off your fans too. ok im done arguing about MM because some people dont have a problem buying a new master of puppets live every week with no chorus vocals-as xino sed "the people who cant get enough" ..what? sad but true 2008 !? wheres my credit card..

Posted by sean @ 05/25/2008 01:22 PM EST

Im sorry i cant help to see more business than music lately..and you know why they been touring in europe and not usa..im not even gonna say the reason but it starts with a M and ends in a Y.
2 albums in 11 years and yet still so many metallica things to buy and buy and buy.

album,concert ticket,t-shirt. everything else is bullshit.period.

Posted by sean @ 05/25/2008 01:49 PM EST

one more thing..the internet didnt ruin the music industry..the music did. there is no new metallica, led zeppelin.floyd etc no great new bands..thats why..not the economy, not limewire,napster...none of that.ppl got smart..nomore promotion of 1 good song is gonna cause ppl to buy a whole album anymore. so i guess now we pay for promotion..pretty good tactic.

I thought i was on the intersandman site here, not fucking blabbermouth

Posted by Mark @ 05/25/2008 05:04 PM EST

Guys I think this is the last Metallica album with this company,so you know, maybe it was a rule or sth like that.Companies always try to get as much as they can and because Metallica are very protective when it comes to their music maybe this was their last option.Besides it's free for Metclub members(I am not) and whatever material is gonna be released,i guess that we will be able to find it!

Posted by Jesius @ 05/25/2008 05:07 PM EST

yeah sorry i wont say anything else until the single is released may 27th.

Jeeze I go to the Indy 500 and come back to everyone bitching! lol You guys, u know this is their career. I have no problem they make u pay for "platinum" AS LONG as it isn't too expensive. Single on the 27th??? Where did that come from?

Posted by Nick @ 05/25/2008 11:48 PM EST

I'm gonna bet my left nut that the new single will be available for Guitar Hero before we hear it on the radio...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/26/2008 12:06 AM EST

Think I heard the new single is suppose to hit on Rockband..bet we will definitely see it on that before radio, either that or it will be released on both the same day.

Posted by Mark @ 05/26/2008 12:16 AM EST

chris, I ment "produce" as in "make in a factory". I work in a studio part time and am aware that they are somewhat expensive. I can see where you misinterpreted me; however I thought I had made the context and thus the meaning of the word fairly obvious.

Also, I love how you assume that Metallica are paying for Mission Metallica completely out of their own pockets.

Posted by caspian @ 05/26/2008 12:52 AM EST

Sean- if all you're charging for your time is 100 bucks an hour- I would never, ever want to hear the piece of that you produce.

Posted by Chris @ 05/26/2008 11:41 AM EST

the 99 bucks is for some kind of uber-cool sounding 5 vinyl edition, i think the platinum starts at like 20 bucks or something for the digital download and the extra content or 35 for a copy of the album, the download, and the content...there was a leaked screen shot of it a while back

Posted by geezus @ 05/26/2008 05:57 PM EST

anyone that would rather have the album on some shit mp3 instead of on a CD or vinyl is crazy. You would take a chance of losing some of the music quality just to have it on your computer? lame....Chris, Nirvana's first CD, Bleach, was recorded for $606.17 - so money doesn't equal quality music.

Posted by The General @ 05/26/2008 09:19 PM EST

Well, it's nearly midday on the 27th here in Oz, and still nothing new on the MM site... Looks like I'll have to wait for another few hours til you guys catch up.

Posted by Harvester of Sorrow @ 05/26/2008 09:34 PM EST

12:05am right now Eastern Pacific time... still nothing...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/27/2008 12:06 AM EST

Yea - 606.17 - where'd they get that number from??

Money does not equal quality music. However- studios that charge 100 bucks an hour are obviously MUCH lower quality than your normal studio. Therefore- the quality coming out of the higher costing studio WILL be better than the quality of the lower cost studio. Period.

Posted by Chris @ 05/27/2008 01:35 AM EST

that's certainly not always the case. I'd compare Pelican's Debut EP, recorded on $200, to St.Anger, Morbid Angel's Heretic, and, well.. most of the bigger rock/metal bands out there today. It's got huge crushing guitars and massive drums, and it was recorded live in two hours or so. No, good studio certainly don't make records automatically better sounding; there's heaps of factors involved.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 07:35 AM EST

"The main sessions for Bleach took place at Reciprocal Recording Studios in Seattle, Washington, with local producer Jack Endino manning the board. The sessions took place in December 1988 and January 1989. They cost a total of $606.17, which was supplied by soon-to-be second guitarist Jason Everman,[3] though he did not perform on the album. Nine of the tracks on the final album were recorded during these sessions."

--- bottom line is you're sounding like a dumbass talking smack about someones studio you know shit about.....and why?

Posted by The General @ 05/27/2008 08:37 AM EST

Mission metallica, according to metclub, won't be running until sometime in the afternoon (Pacific). So if you are EST, like me, expect nothing till at least 4pm.

Posted by manguy @ 05/27/2008 08:45 AM EST

Hey dumbass- let's think about something for a minute....I buy a $1500 mic, and then I buy a $20 mic...now which one has the better quality on a recording? THE EXPENSIVE ONE. I am not talking about the quality of the music- because that's subjective and I really don't want to have to make you feel like more of an idiot than you already are. However, if you need more examples on how higher-end studios produce higher quality music, just let me know.

You wanna come back for another round?

Posted by Chris @ 05/27/2008 08:56 AM EST

Just for the sake of argument, I once read something about this.

It said a Good Producer with 1 sm57, which is like $100, can produce better results than a Shitty Producer with all the best equipment in the world.

Posted by Tony @ 05/27/2008 09:05 AM EST

NO BUT TONY IT IS CHEAP SO THEREFORE IT IS CRAP

Chris: I hope you never get to record anything. The "throw money at things to get good tone" thing never works.

But hey, keep on talking shit.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:17 AM EST

eh, perhaps that statement needs clarifying. microphone placement, a tight band, and a band that knows their tone is far more important then buying an expensive microphone.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:18 AM EST

I dunno guys, with todays technology does a cheap studio and a high price studio really make that much of a difference? Maybe 15 years ago but I don't think so much today. There's a new band out of Toronto called Alpha Galates, just released an album and it sounds great... and apparently they recorded the whole thing in their apartment.

Jesus christ, I came in here to see if the site is up yet, and all I see is this back and forth bitching. As I've said with everything metallica that people have bitched about, don't bother with it if it bothers you that much. It's optional for extra stuff. People can still access stuff for free.

Posted by kurt @ 05/27/2008 12:21 PM EST

Did anyone notice that on Wikipedia's entry for the new album, it says that Lars was quoted telling Spin Magazine that this album will be a high point in their career??? Where did someone get that info from?

Posted by D-J @ 05/27/2008 12:48 PM EST

Caspian- too bad you're a little late on that, since I've done more professional studio sessions that anyone on this board combined. I'm a classical musician mostly, so I'm pretty sure I know what good tone is. Probably that master's degree is music performance that I have helps too. Don't talk about things that you have NO CLUE about.

Posted by Chris @ 05/27/2008 02:10 PM EST

well chris, i've only done a few studio sessions but i've been on the radio, have you?

whats up with this missionmetallica... lets go already..

Posted by Tony @ 05/27/2008 02:44 PM EST

Actually, now that you mention it, a performance of me performing the Brahms German Requiem was just broadcast two nights ago. So yea, I have done plenty.

It just annoys me when people who have no concept of how the professional music world works start talking like they do. Recording on garage band is way different than doing a professional recording that's costing a studio A LOT of money to produce.

Posted by Chris @ 05/27/2008 03:24 PM EST

So you're a bigtime professional battling the small time folk of garage band, and right in the comfort of a home welfare pays for, on a metallica message forum.

Solid, you are an idol of our time.

I mean who else goes from playing Brahms German Requiem to being annoyed by what someone online thinks recording is all about. Aren't you busier than that? Me? I'm not. I just sold a broken Gibson acoustic on ebay for 700.

Posted by Tony @ 05/27/2008 05:44 PM EST

I have done a fair bit of recording myself too, Chris. You're a fool if you think the most expensive option automatically gives the best sound; or, for that matter, if you think that being a classical musician automatically gives you a good ear for tone.

But hey, keep on talking out of your arse.

Posted by caspian @ 05/27/2008 09:25 PM EST

Tony- the only one in here on welfare is your mother. Which I guess would mean that you're the one living in the welfare housing.

And Caspian- a) you obviously have never worked with any sound equipment not bought from radio-shack or wal-mart, and b) being a classical musician doesn't automatically give me a great ear for tone (because it is great, not good as you said) the fact that I've worked my ass off for a long time on my tone gives me a great ear for tone.

You guys wanna spread some more of your expansive musical knowledge? I would really love to hear it.

Posted by Chris @ 05/29/2008 03:51 PM EST

Classical? where's the crunch you pansie?

I'll have an EP out within a month and i'll be glad to share it with you.
