04/17/2008 Entry: "9th ALBUM ON THE 9th DAY OF THE 9th MONTH?"

An interesting post popped up on video game Rock Band's forums from what seems to be a "well connected" member of the forum, as posted:

Look for the album title to be announced on missionmetallica.com on 5/10. The site goes live in early May.

Release date for the album is 9/9 as of now, as always that is subject to change.

There are going to be big promotions surrounding this release. If you aren't a member of the Metallica fan club yet and you are a fan of the band let's just say that now is the time to join.

Generally, we'd pass this off with a grain of salt... but, this does seem to concur with a fewe other bits of info we've received lately. The post has been deleted, but can be view using the google cache.

Mission Metallica is the new Warner site to promote the band and the new album. Currently, it's simply a placeholder with a spot to sign up for their Metallica mailing list. It does promise to allow us to listen to experience the new album - before it's done.

Holy Crap!!!! A release date??? This is some needed feedback we've been waiting for!!! Thanks guys!!!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 04/17/2008 02:28 PM EST

not only the release date, we get to know around when that site launches with some new music and the marketing machine will be rolling...this is some fuckin awesome news!

Posted by Mark @ 04/17/2008 02:40 PM EST

See, the release date isn't all that soon. But I don't care, just knowing there is a definite time table(even if it gets altered) makes me feel better. Cause for me it's just been this up in the air, almost chinese democracy, vibe about when we will get new tunes from them.

Posted by kurt @ 04/17/2008 03:45 PM EST

Proud papa moment for me: My 8 year old son's favorite song on Guitar Hero III is One and now he keeps making me play it in the car.

Posted by kurt @ 04/17/2008 03:47 PM EST

I signed up twice because I was paranoid I typed it wrong lol... I am super excited!

Posted by Nick @ 04/17/2008 04:48 PM EST

Looks like metallica will be using their old school logo. man this is so awsome. the razor sharp metallica looks so sweat!

Posted by Bond @ 04/17/2008 06:48 PM EST

I live in the D.C. area and heard on the local rock station, D.C.101 that Metallica will be heading up Ozzfest this year. Anyone else heard anything like this?

Posted by The Unamed Fan @ 04/17/2008 08:58 PM EST

I heard that on blabbermouth.net a few days ago, no confirmation yet though.

Posted by Mark @ 04/17/2008 09:31 PM EST

I was hoping they wouldn't go with the "newer" Metallica logo from St. Anger. I was hoping they would distance themselves from that as much as possible.

Posted by Nick @ 04/17/2008 09:56 PM EST

yeah, are you guys sure that "Mission Metallica" site isn't some spam site, or worse?! It looks kinda fishy.

Posted by Tipper @ 04/18/2008 12:17 AM EST

Spam or not, I'm so desperate for some album news I'd sign up for a fake PayPal page if they promised Metallica news...

Posted by DuManchu @ 04/18/2008 01:39 AM EST

finally some good news, can't wait for may 10th! 'tallica baby!

Posted by Juztice @ 04/18/2008 04:29 AM EST

I don't believe anything I hear or see till its official on metallica.com. So much spam out there, and its been so long, I am not going to get my hopes up just yet. Larz will tell us something when its time, hopefully. I do love the logo on that mission Metallica thing.

So I am looking at the Bonnaroo site last night and Pearl Jam is closing on saturday night and WSP is closing on Sunday night. Can't believe The Boys aren't closing one of those nights. 30 days till new Metallica Trax from the AZ show.

The new vinyl releases from metallica came with an advertisement inside for this site, so im pretty sure its legit.

Posted by Mark @ 04/18/2008 10:20 AM EST

The dude had a Warnerbros. email. It is real. Some may make fun of me for saying that, but it is real.

Experience The New METALLICA Album Before It's Done - Apr. 18, 2008
METALLICA has set up a special web site to promote the group's forthcoming LP. "Mission Metallica" will go live in May and it promises to offer fans a chance to "experience the new album before it's done."

Check it out at www.missionmetallica.com.

A postcard promoting the new site — which was apparently included with the vinyl reissues of the "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning" albums — can be seen at this location.

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently announced that the group's follow-up to 2003's "St Anger" will be released this September.

....once again.... it is real.

Posted by Nick @ 04/18/2008 12:25 PM EST

Yeah, I just signed up. This is all I wanted(obviously besides the CD itself), to see the wheels turning. I'm not even sure I want to hear too much of it prior to the release date. I just want some of these tidbits of info from official sources on a regular basis.

Posted by kurt @ 04/18/2008 02:36 PM EST

I do have to give some props to IS and the rest of the guys who even beat Blabbermouth.net to the punch for this new great info! Great job guys!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 04/18/2008 04:55 PM EST

Yeaah, nice work indeed!! Out of curiosity, how was this link found..

Pissing my pants right now....finally some news!!!

Posted by EPDA @ 04/18/2008 06:16 PM EST

awesome!

Posted by xino @ 04/18/2008 08:12 PM EST

I hope these promotions are relatively tasteful. Nothing wrong with advertising your album, let's just not doing anything silly, ok? ;)

Posted by caspian @ 04/18/2008 08:47 PM EST

You'd think those assholes that created MissionMetallica.com could add one fucking riff from the new album when the animation loads! I've got giant blue balls here... FUCK! This is ridiculous... I am reminded of the episode of South Park when Cartman couldn't wait 3 weeks for the Wii to be released, so he decided to have Butters bury him in snow so he'd be in suspended animation for those 3 weeks... Anyone wanna bury me in some snow until September? Just don't forget me so I end up waking up 500 years in the future...

Posted by D-J @ 04/18/2008 10:09 PM EST

This was found on wikapedia. Some old news and some new....

The music of the album reportedly has an Eastern harmonic minor flair to it that could be construed as Middle eastern and Arabic sounding.[30] Drummer Lars Ulrich explains further, "There's a couple of bits in there that could be called Eastern, but don't read too much into that — it's not an album full of 12 "Kashmir"'s or anything but there is some stuff in that direction, sure."

Vocalist James Hetfield recently revealed some current working titles to include "One Minute Closer to Death (Than You Were a Minute Ago)" and "We Put the Riff in Riff Raff".[35] It should be noted, however, that most 'working titles' under Metallica are humorous in nature and are almost always changed before an album is released.

Posted by Dave @ 04/18/2008 10:58 PM EST

Wikapedia once again is not a valid source.

Posted by Nick @ 04/18/2008 11:28 PM EST

seems nothing new to me..

Posted by Juztice @ 04/19/2008 04:23 AM EST

This is from Metontour.com:

- Posted by : MetOnTour
Metallica returns to Turkey for its third time, once again at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on July 27. That wraps up the European vacation, with one warm up date in Tucson, and a little US festival called Bonnaroo. Currently the band is still recording the final bits of the album, and will begin tour rehearsals in a couple weeks. Hope to see some of you guys and gals on the rail this summer!

still recording final bits? hmm

Posted by Juztice @ 04/19/2008 04:32 AM EST

Recording the final bits of the ablum.....seems nothing new to me.

Posted by Dave @ 04/19/2008 10:29 AM EST

Yeah maybe they aren't a valid source. Who knows. I think those quotes are valid though. Even though the song titles are obviously a joke and the sound could have changed since the Middle Eastern vibe quote. I remember reading that a long time ago.

Posted by Dave @ 04/19/2008 10:30 AM EST

The middle eastern vibe thing really interests me, that coule be some really cool stuff. System of A Down proved that middle eastern music can be made heavy and sound sweet...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 04/19/2008 12:19 PM EST

Well i was hoping that they'd be done with recording about now and that they are now finishing the album in the sense of mixing and mastering... guess we'll just have to wait 'til may for some realy real new news! :D

Posted by Juztice @ 04/19/2008 01:05 PM EST

This is great news. However I don't think that I'll check out that Mission Metallica website. I don't want to hear parts of songs before the album drops. Yeah Sept is a bit away, but I'd rather just wait it out and soak it all in when it comes. Last time I heard little bits was St. Anger, and at the time it sounded great but once I got the cd, it wasn't as great. Also, anyone think that the fact this website will be called mission metallica has an reference to the album title? I know it's very early, but maybe the word mission something to do with the album title?? I dunno....just a thought

Posted by MONSTER @ 04/19/2008 03:46 PM EST

Judging by the design of the Mission Metallica site, I think "Blood, Sweat, and Metal" would be a good name. then again, it's possible that the people that run that site also don't have the slightest idea about new artwork, logo, etc.

I'd pay twice the price for a new Metallica cd with the old logo like that. :) Reminds me of better days...

Posted by Tipper @ 04/19/2008 04:02 PM EST

I agree with you 100% MONSTER, but I just don't have the strength to not listen to the new stuff prior to official release if it's available online. It's just impossible for me. I wish I could wait, but I know I won't! When St. Anger songs became available online, I was like, I'm not listening to them....well o.k. just one song maybe, but that's it.....2 hours later I had heard every single song twice! In my opinion though, I think the album should be listened to from beginning to end, songs in order of course. I don't even like to be intoxicated or high. As far as album titles, Blood Sweat and Metal is pretty cool I guess. It does go with the Mission Metallica artwork. All we can do now is guess what the title will be though, and without any song info, it's hard to guess what a possible title could be, if indeed there is a title. Maybe we can start a new thread of what we think would be cool titles.....

Posted by Dave @ 04/19/2008 07:02 PM EST

Hey, has anyone noticed that if you go to metallica's website and choose the black album skin on top of the page you see Robert instead Jason. I'ts kinds weird

Posted by Bond @ 04/19/2008 08:23 PM EST

When it says experience the new album, it will probably be more in the line of the album title, song titles, pics, interviews and probably a listen to the single soon before its official release or something. I would be surprised if we hear any of the other songs besides the single and if so it will probably be very tiny snippets. I do reserve the right to be wrong however:)

Posted by TMetal @ 04/19/2008 08:27 PM EST

Um that is def. Jason not Rob lol

Posted by Nick @ 04/20/2008 12:25 AM EST

Maybe they'll think of offering 4 different colors of the album like they did on St Anger and then decide to just do one. As a collector, I would've grabbed that stuff up, resulting in more sales for them. Listened to some Kill 'Em All for a bit while driving around yesterday. What are you guys listening to right now?

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 04/20/2008 09:35 AM EST

I'm listening to the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album, Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!

My introduction to their music was Metallica's cover of Loverman.

nick cave is great! i've been listening to his music for the past days, great stuff!

So there is an update on Metallica.com from the Record day event. James dyed his beard. For album photo shoot maybe?

Posted by Nick @ 04/20/2008 05:46 PM EST

they should call it Cloud 9

cause that's where we'll all be when it finally hits

Posted by Tony @ 04/21/2008 02:07 AM EST

i'm loving that new logo. Just another month till new Metallica trax. How many new songs will they play in AZ? two, three, four? I'm going to guess 3. Though I hope its less. I'd rather hear the new shit the way it was designed - on a stereo, w/ volume up.

Posted by The General @ 04/21/2008 09:46 AM EST

Some pics from the signing: http://www.metallicabb.com/index.php?showtopic=66696

Sounds like the album really is going to be released in September.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 04/21/2008 10:28 AM EST

Here's the thing..."harmonic minor" does not give music an "eastern" or "middle eastern" flavor. Anyone who thinks (or writes) that obviously has no idea about the uses or sounds of the harmonic minor scale. Middle Eastern music is defined by the use of quarter tones, which are also called micro tones, and modes that are different from that of the western scale. The wikipedia post is complete BS.

Posted by Chris @ 04/21/2008 01:29 PM EST

Mission Metallica? I can't help but think that website name has something to do with the album title. I guess we'll find out soon, which in itself is awesome news.

Posted by Trace @ 04/21/2008 01:50 PM EST

As long as it's not supposed to be released on the 09-09-09...

Posted by Bleeding @ 04/21/2008 08:24 PM EST

Bleeding, I've been fearing that for a week, and have been too scared to mention it.

Posted by Azrael @ 04/21/2008 09:23 PM EST

Could you imagine if it didn't come out until 9-9-09?! The press release would read something like this

According to Blubbermouth: METALLICA SET TO BEGIN RECORDING DEMOS FOR SKETCHES FOR SONGS FOR NEXT ALBUM SOON. Ulrich: "Yeah, uh we're gonna go play some few odd festivals and like, jam for a half-hour before all the shows. We've got a good 40 hours of material that we could mold into songs right now. But you kind of lose, I don't know... the in-the-now-ness of it. So yeah, I'm not a big promoter, but expect the album...ehhh, when you see it in stores!"

....groan.....

Yeah right, that's why marketing machinery gets a'rollin' in spring 08, that EVERY single human being will be informed in fall 09...
I can see the brilliance of this plan very clearly now. Thanx a lot ;-)
Wasn't the mission Metallica slogan not sth. out of the SKOM movie, that Kirk pulled off?
I guess they just liked the term.

Rock on!

Well... I guess no one else is going to the first MetallicA show on U.S. soil in damn near 4 years. Anyhow... if you are, email me... It'd be cool to meet some new friends at a Metallica show... My personal opinion is they won't debut a new song until late summer.

Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 04/22/2008 10:52 PM EST

Sorry, I'm going to a Metallica show in September, I can wait until then... Tickets are going to be a lot cheaper than at Bonaroo.

Posted by Tipper @ 04/23/2008 12:14 AM EST

took me a while to get situated in my new place and i guess i havent missed much. i dont like that mission metallica thing but then again alot of bands do that for new albums now like trivium and lamb of god etc.

METALLICA's ULRICH: 'Metal Is Alive And Well And Doing Better Than It Has In Many Years' - Apr. 22, 2008
RollingStone.com conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich this past Saturday, April 19 at the band's Record Store Day signing event in northern California. An excerpt from the chat follows:

RollingStone.com: You were one of the first artists to sue over copyright infringement and voice concerns over aspects of downloading. Eight years later, with bands like RADIOHEAD embracing the Net and yet charting, how has your stance changed, if at all?

Ulrich: We have FLACs and MP3s for sale. It was never about downloading per se. We have the Vault where you can download shows from twenty years ago for free, full-on and it's been there for years. You can download recent shows days after they happen for cost. Back in the day there was a much bigger question about "on whose terms?" We said, "Wait a minute, it should be about the artist." Then all hell broke loose and we sat on the sidelines for a while. We've always been fiercely independent and controlling; sometimes to a fault. That's why we exist and why all these people show up.

RollingStone.com: And as far as the next record goes ...

Ulrich: You know, this is our last record under contract with Warner, so we're looking at how we can embrace everything.

RollingStone.com: Like a 360 deal with Live Nation?

Ulrich: Mmm, we've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a players as possible. We've been observing RADIOHEAD and Trent Reznor and in twenty-seven years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet.

RollingStone.com: What can you say about working with mad genius Rick Rubin on this upcoming album?

Ulrich: Mad genius? You've heard then. [Laughs] It's been a great year, and it's been a lot of fun — a chance to re-invent the wheel again. It's great to have someone who sits there and throws things in your face. He's not very methodical; it's all about the vibe and the moment. We were interacting and playing off each other more. There was little method to his madness, but you learn to trust him and roll with it.

RollingStone.com: Have you thought about the climate into which you'll be dropping this new album? What is the state of metal today?

Ulrich: I think you saw. Metal is fucking alive and well and doing better than it has in many years. It seems like most of the metal in the Seventies and the Eighties is still revered. It seems like most fourteeen year olds are into DEEP PURPLE, IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST, as opposed to some alternative, grunge and especially the rap-rock of the Nineties. When you've been around a while you tend to disregard cycles, but there is a resurgence way deeper and more penetrating into the fourteen-year-old mindset all over. It's unbelievable.

Posted by Nick @ 04/23/2008 01:55 PM EST

They are sure keeping things close to the vest....

Posted by Nick @ 04/23/2008 01:55 PM EST

Remember back in the day when there was Metallica news EVERY DAY on the internet? This went on for YEARS. I remember there were "Metallica" private chat rooms on AIM back in the 90's that were always full of people! News and discussion ALL THE TIME! Over the past few years the boys have really teetered on the edge of irrelevancy after so many brilliant and exciting years in the limelight. The new album NEEDS to be good. Really good. It also needs to be released as soon as humanly possible.

Posted by Scott @ 04/23/2008 08:31 PM EST

I remember when we had new Metallica t-shirt designs to talk about.... I was always a fan of the older Pushead designs. The SpongeBob and Fire Dancer designs never did anything for me.

So as a question... which Metallica T-shirt is your favorite? My favorite is the Unforgiven.

As long as Lars doesn't start saying Trivium, BFMV and A7X are good metal, I don't really mind. remember before St.Anger how he saying that he loved all of the nu-metal bands? That was terrible, and obviously didn't rub off well into the album.

Posted by caspian @ 04/25/2008 03:48 AM EST

I could care less what Lars personally likes. I don't expect him to only be spinning Angel Witch discs all these years later. I think it's good if they have some kind of idea is current, whether he likes it or not, or I like it or not is irrelevant. Inspiration can come from odd places. If he heard something from a group I don't like, but it inspired some great idea in him, then fantastic. BTW, none of this was a shot at you caspian. I also don't care from Trivium BFMV and only like a couple of A7X songs.

Posted by kurt @ 04/25/2008 09:14 AM EST

I really think Trivium is a real good band with good roots.

METALLICA: New Album To Be Released In October? - Apr. 26, 2008
Amazon.com is currently listing an October 28, 2008 release date for the new METALLICA album. It should be noted, however, that this information has not yet been corroborated by the band or the group's record label, Warner Bros. Music.

METALLICA has set up a web site at MissionMetallica.com that says it will offer fans a chance to "experience the new album before it's done."

You have to b kidding me. I thought Sept. was pushing it. Not very happy if this is confirmed.

Posted by Nick @ 04/26/2008 11:15 PM EST

FUCK that.

Posted by Tipper @ 04/27/2008 02:45 AM EST

Good point, Kurt. Bond: trivium blow goats. Also, October 28? you've got to fucking kidding me. Again, though: " It should be noted, however, that this information has not yet been corroborated by the band or the group's record label,"

Anyway, hopefully it'll get leaked a bit earlier. Sitting on an album for this long is just asking for some album leak action.

Posted by caspian @ 04/27/2008 04:23 AM EST

Fcuk Amazon, James and Lars said SEPTEMBER !

Posted by $trangeR @ 04/27/2008 06:40 AM EST

yeah, as much as I've come to like Amazon.com lately, I hope if they're posting a release date as anticipated as this one, that they would check their sources...

Who knows? Amazon might get the album in October and Metallica might pull a NIN or Radiohead by releasing the MP3's on their site. Hell, I'd probably buy the MP3 version AND the physical album. I know how bad it pissed me off to download the new NIN and then see it in stores with an art booklet and everything...

i doubt the album title is mission metallica. That sounds like junk. plus you gotta figure they'd debut the abum title on their official website. i hope it is something more creative than mission metallica.

Posted by The General @ 04/27/2008 02:50 PM EST

I have to agree with General. Mission Metallica sounds lame... then again so do ReLoad and St Anger.

Posted by Tipper @ 04/27/2008 04:12 PM EST

Dumb

Posted by Nick @ 04/27/2008 06:43 PM EST

"Mission" must reference the album title or a song title in some way.

Posted by EET FUK @ 04/27/2008 08:48 PM EST

my sister had a baby last year, and you know what, i wasn't crazy about the name she chose, but now i love it and i love that baby

i don't care if metallica calls their album SHITBALLS, it's going to be METALLICA. not some lame ass shit.

and if it's MISSION METALLICA,
then i say FUCK YEAH

Posted by Tony @ 04/27/2008 08:52 PM EST

I'm not saying the album title has to rock my socks or anything. All I want is a title I'm not embarrassed to say. "Mission Metallica" "Mission"... no, it just doesn't fit. "St Anger" is better than that.

Posted by Tipper @ 04/27/2008 09:57 PM EST

My vote still goes towards "Metal up your ass!" or "Floods of Vomit"

Posted by Tipper @ 04/27/2008 09:57 PM EST

How about this for an album title: We Will Destroy You. Kinda catchy, don't you think? Its powerful and yet personal at the same time...

Posted by D-J @ 04/27/2008 10:12 PM EST

How about a variation of that... " We will destroy you and all will perish in our path"

Posted by Nick @ 04/27/2008 10:50 PM EST

haha... well that IS pretty good!

Posted by Tipper @ 04/27/2008 11:03 PM EST

No, it's not. You guys suck at making album names up. I doubt it will be mission metallica; that would be truly dire and except for St.Anger Metallica have done alright when it comes to album names.

Also: Tony, are you sure it's not going to be 'lame ass shit'? A Metallica logo on the front is by no means an indicator of excellent quality (though it often is, heh) Obviously you had forgotten about St.Anger when you typed that comment.

Posted by caspian @ 04/28/2008 04:43 AM EST

I doubt they would name it mission metallica. If they have been putting in all this time, switched producers and everything else to make the ultimate metallica album, they would have to be smart enough to not give it a name like that. I don't trust Amazon's dates(they are often very wrong with novels), but Robert just said "fall" during that record day thing.

Posted by kurt @ 04/28/2008 09:09 AM EST

I'll bet my left nut that the album title will be more then one word. I think they are thinking old school with everything, including album titles. All the older albums are KEA, RTL, MOP and AJFA... I'm thinking it's gonna be longer like those...

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 04/28/2008 10:29 AM EST

I just hope they don't title it "The New Album"

Posted by D-J @ 04/28/2008 01:44 PM EST

Its kind of pointless to guess what the title would be, but since we're all doing so lets look at the only info recently on anything Metallica and that would be from the site that will post info. Mission...Metallica. What would the Metallica mission be this time around...Conquer? Surmount..Overcome? Perhaps one of those will appear in the title...or a track

Posted by guidedbyvoices @ 04/28/2008 03:11 PM EST

Their mission is to do what they want despite whats expected of them.

The title will be:

"OBLITERATE"

TALLICA RULE THE WORLD

Posted by Waverley @ 04/28/2008 06:43 PM EST

What about "Vulturous"... or "Metal Vultures"... I know they toyed with that song, etc.

I still think we're gonna get another eponymous album.

it amazes me that people think the album name is gonna be mission:metallica, i mean come on its supposed to be part of the albums promotion... anticipation, just like maytallica

Posted by xino @ 04/28/2008 11:05 PM EST

St.Anger wasn't particularly good, Tony. Perhaps when you get out of your raving fanboy phase you'll realise that. It wasn't *terrible*, but it was/is riddled with faults, and is certainly not good beer drinking music.

An untitled effort would be quite alright. To be honest I don't mind the idea of "The New Album", as it's a fairly irreverent, unpretentious title. I like the idea of calling it "Conqueror" to borrow GBV's idea. (named yourself after a great band, btw.) Unfortunately Jesu released an album with that name last year.

Posted by caspian @ 04/28/2008 11:36 PM EST

also, waverly:

"Their mission is to do what they want despite whats expected of them."

In that case perhaps the album should be called "SELL LOTS OF RECORDS" :P :P

Mission: Metallica sounds about as good an album title as Mandatory Metallica. Its definately going to be something nobody could ever guess. Possibly 2-3 words. Something like "Destroyer" or "Conquerer" are just to lame. I wish they would call it "red vette" or "grinder" and be done with it. lol.

Posted by The General @ 04/29/2008 09:00 AM EST

Eye of the Beholder Caspian... raving fanboy doesn't really mean much...the point is the biggest fucking heavy band in the world put out an album called St.Anger that was heavy as shit, and even if it was just an album of riffs without drums/bass/vocals, it would still have that signature to it that you can't find anywhere else. I'll excitedly take whatever the hell they have to put out, because afterall it can't be compared to anything, can't be compared to an album they didn't put out, can't be compared to a riff they didn't make, can't be compared to a Metallica that doesn't exist. It's fuckin' Metallica.

They put a video for people like you so that you can see how the whole process of the album was different. That's what it was, a moment in their life, now apart of history.

Lastly I just wanna say that I can't get that emotion anywhere else. St.Anger just has that raw fuckin' crazy emotion to it, the drums sound like bombs, everything is just scorchin' and MAD. There's lots of metal bands out there, but with their tight sounds, it almost seems too fake and perfect to be real. And when you are crisp like that, it kinda takes away from that ultra madness feeling you get with St.Anger, and what a name they chose..

Lose it a little man! You know they did....

Posted by Tony @ 04/29/2008 02:51 PM EST

I completely agree with Tony. There's always plenty of criticism do go around for St. Anger, but they were not aiming to go for some super eardrum-friendly sound. They had a lot of things going on in their lives at the time, with Jason leaving, with James in rehab, and they have never been afraid to do what they want to do. While I am sure they would want people to like their music, they are more concerned with being true to themselves. They've always been like that. They were that way when they caused an outcry releasing Fade To Black. They were that way when they did the Black Album, Load, and Reload. I love these people who have called them sell-outs over the years. Newsflash - if all they ever did was say, oooohh, everyone loved this album, let's do another album just like it!, THAT would have been selling out. We would be looking forward to Kill Em All 9. You know what you get when someone takes a formula and just copies it over and over again? Megadeth. Now, I must say, they DO have some music that I think is pretty good, for sure. BUT, look how much Metallica has grown. Other bands have not.
I went off into a tangent... As far as St Anger is concerned, when I am dealing with some crazy family stress thats been going on lately, there is nothing else better suited to get that anger out than St. Anger. There is no other Metallica album or other band that does for me what the shear rawness and anger of that album does for me. I don't ever really listen to it unless I am dealing with that stuff. St. Anger is therapy.

i think simon cowell should be hets vocal coach. "that wuz dreadful metallica kareoke"

Posted by sean @ 04/29/2008 09:45 PM EST

I think the main reason people didn't like St Anger, Tony... was because we all believed it was a step towards their former sound. We had every right to believe that at the time too. Lars and Kirk both hinted at Kill 'Em All and Justice styles. When the album came out, it just didn't hold up to expectations.

True, Anger is not a bad album, It just doesn't feel complete. We as fans have a right to an opinion of an album we paid our hard-earned money for.

No disrespect to anybody here, but St Anger is one of Metallica's mis-steps, just like the Napster issue. Sure the band has a right to be humans like the rest of us and have the right to change, etc. We just want the old Metallica back. Everybody does.

Posted by Tipper @ 04/30/2008 01:11 AM EST

Napster a misstep? I think it was more of what they and everyone else (other bands) were thinking at the time, but had no balls to say anything. Metallica did, and now bands/artists are in more control of their hard work. Any Metallica fan should know the reason why Lars and Co. did what they did, as far as the Napster shit goes. I wouldn't expect them to react in any different manner. The only regret I have about the whole Napster hoopla, is that Hetfield didn't punch Shawn Fanning in the face at the awards show when he mocked them by wearing a Metallica t-shirt.

Posted by The General @ 04/30/2008 09:04 AM EST

I liked st. anger, but did hold some disappointment based on how it was billed, song by song review in so what, etc. It wasn't really how they described it in advance. Nevertheless, I liked it. I TOTALLY disagree with the Napster thing. Look at the state of the music industry now. They were RIGHT. It was the record companies, who couldn't come up with a proper business model for it, who fouled it all up. The current state of the music business is a total mess as a result. Think of bands like Priest, Maiden, etc, that didn't take off until a few records into their career. That could never happen now.

Posted by kurt @ 04/30/2008 09:10 AM EST

General and Kurt, please re-read what I said. I didn't agree or disagree with what Metallica stood up for in my post. In truth, I always supported them, even the Napster stuff.

It WAS a misstep for them, though. They lost a lot of respect and fans over that. That isn't an opinion – it's a fact. I can't paint rose-tinted reality for you guys. Metallica is a phenomenal band that gets trashed for where it stands on certain issues, whether they're right or wrong. That's all I said. They lost points in the PR department.

Sorry for playing Devil's Advocate, but I'm in marketing and so I know a bit about these things. Sorry to step on toes. Peace.

They should call the album Blue Balls, since thats what the tallica boys are giving me with all this anticipation.

Posted by King Nothing @ 05/01/2008 01:54 AM EST

Tony, just because St.Anger was raw and emotional doesn't mean it's GOOD (and it certainly doesn't make it unique, either- if you think there aren't a lot of raw and emotional metal bands out there now you need to look around a bit more). I haven't said it was a sellout (my sell lots of records joke was just that- a joke) but the fact is that there isn't really a lot that's good from that album, but there's plenty of cringe worthy stuff. FRANTIC TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TOCK anyone? YOU FLUSH IT OUT, YOU FLUSH IT OUT, anyone? And so on. I understand that the time of the recording of St.Anger was a tough one for the band, but that DOES NOT MAKE THE ALBUM BETTER. Furthermore, integrity does not make an album sound better.

Ok, its May already....any clues about Mission Metallica?
St Anger was great. period.

Posted by EPDA @ 05/01/2008 09:47 AM EST

no apology necessary. AS far as them losing respect and fans for standing for what they believe in, I'm sure they aren't losing any sleep over that loss. Those are the same people that only know Sandman and want their music for free. I am positive The Boys would have rather the Napster thing to have not happened, but it is what it is. IT shouldn't be held over their heads, 9 years later. Anyone that still talks about hating Metallica, because of Napster, is lame. I fail to see the point in this discussion, and I grow weary of typing. Oh well. Where is the new music......ARGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!

Posted by The General @ 05/01/2008 09:52 AM EST

General, it's amazing the number of people that still carry on about the Napster stuff and throw Metallica under the bus. An article on Digg the other day proved that, just a bunch of whiners complaining about Metallica and Napster. The biggest problem I have is the people who can't recognize what Metallica was really fighting for, control of their work, that's it. For some reason it always leads to some argument about how 'Tallica is a bunch of money grubbing bastards. Fuck Em' All, right in their stupid asses.

Posted by DuManchu @ 05/01/2008 10:45 AM EST

Tipper, no problem. In fact, I guess I agree in a sense. Not that their reasons were wrong, but maybe how they did it was a misstep. Because they certainly did suffer a major hit. I also think all those other bands that were with them, and then hid in teh shadows, were either smarter or a bunch of pussies for not putting their own names out there.

Posted by kurt @ 05/01/2008 02:08 PM EST

St. Anger would have been a very nice album if they hadn't repeated the same riffs/lyrics 3 times on each songs... They did 7 minutes songs with 3 minutes of music... Lyrics were also "fade" compared to what Het was doing on all other albums.

I really like some stuff in that album, witch is different, but after 4 or 5 minutes, i feel to just skip the end and start the next one. For me Shoot me again and unnamed feelings are probably my favorite songs!

That said, i realy belive that the next album will be great, and, it's funny to say, even thou i want it to sound like the first four albums, i really hope that it will be completely different from what they did already... Like someone said, it's the fact that they do what they feel is right that keeps me in their stuff...

Posted by Bleeding @ 05/01/2008 05:16 PM EST

Mission Metallica now says "coming May 12!" So what do you think we'll see and/or hear on that fateful Monday, hmmmm?

Posted by carbon mon ox @ 05/01/2008 05:59 PM EST

Hey Bleeding. you know what's funny about St Anger? Most people talk about how the songs are too long, like you mentioned about a 7 minute song with 3 minutes of core material.

I agree. But the weird thing is I haven't once skipped any of the songs for length. I guess there's something hard-wired in my brain that won't let me change during the middle of a song.

Now I'm not the kind of guy that listens to a song on repeat (annoying), but the length or repetition of the St Anger songs didn't bother me. (I can't figure that out).

May 12th.... 11 more days!

Posted by Tipper @ 05/01/2008 08:33 PM EST

i remember the first time i saw the st anger video (this was before the album come out) i was like fuck they edit the solo..fuck MTV! then came the MTV icon and i remember MTV cut the transmission while they where still playing frantic, so far the song was really good and fuck i was expecting for so much more, and when the album came out the next 4 minutes of frantic where a freaking loop, as the album as a whole, i was kinda let down, to be honest the snare never bothered me, and well neither the lack of solos considering that with every release they where putting less and less solos on the songs, but the fact that the music was so long and so repetitive did get to my nerves...as time passed i started appreciating the album more, its not my favorite but it stands on its own..

Posted by xino @ 05/01/2008 08:34 PM EST

also by the time st anger came out i was listening to a lot of dream theater, satriani, friedman, becker, malmsteen and power metal so i had my fix of guitar solos...

Posted by xino @ 05/01/2008 08:36 PM EST

For some reason, for me anyway, Metallica songs seem to go by pretty fast. You can listen to some of their songs for over 8 minutes and then other bands might have a song that lasts 1/2 that time and it seems like it takes forever for it to get over with. Hmmm, I wonder what kind of news we'll get 11 days from now...I'm guessing a possible title of the album. Speaking of Napster, I saw Fanning on a VW commercial just the other day.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/01/2008 09:09 PM EST

If you're a fan, this has got to be good news: the boys have brought a finished song to their record label, Warner and played it for the execs. Read after the break to find out what the label thought...

Yes, the good news continues:

label sources tell Stereo Warning that the song was "heavy" and "brutal" but also "punkish." I don't know about you, but to us that sounds kinda like "Ride The Lightning." Can anyone say "Creeping Death"? One can only hope, right?

punkish? I´m scared!

Posted by santor @ 05/02/2008 08:00 PM EST

Sounds like good news, Santor. I hope it's true! Picked up Lightning on vinyl today...she's gonna stay wrapped up, too.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/02/2008 11:14 PM EST

"heavy" and "brutal" were also used to describe St. Anger... so I'm not hanging on to those comments just yet... but still appreciate the update Santor!

" "heavy" and "brutal" but also "punkish." ", sounds like The Other New Song....

Posted by $trangeR @ 05/03/2008 04:55 AM EST

punkish...that doesn't sound good. The label should shut up and let Metallica do the promotion. Though the punkish thing gets me scared about the vocals, I hope James doesn't have a lot of whoa-whoa's in there. The vocals can really take a song to another place, even though the riffs are heavy. I'm also scared from what Lars said, that they were close to finishing but still had plenty of time to "fuck it up". Bad vocals can definitely fuck things up. But I'm sure it'll be great, I'm looking forward to the new album, have been ever since the GnR drummer heard pieces of it and was blown away. No, yeah, it'll be good, because everything has Rick Rubin's stamp of approval, he will not put out a shitty album.

Posted by booglypoo @ 05/03/2008 08:00 AM EST

just to beat this dead horse: The issue with Napster has to do with how popularity works. It's not just about how many people like you, but how many are aware of you, and how many hate you. You want people to be aware of you, but only a minimal number to hate you. If you sell 15 million copies of an album in the US, you've managed to get 5% of the people to like you enough to pay money (ignore the fact that it's less than 5% because of all of us who own multiples.) The remaining 95% (Metallica have very high awareness) are hopefully ambivalent, and don't run around talking about how crappy/greedy/etc you are. Napster pushed the number of people who hate the band instead of not caring about them much higher. That affects who is willing to listen to the band when I'm playing it, how many people will come up to you and tell you they hate the music you are listening to, etc. Obviously this is much less of a problem now than it was during the height of the issue, but it's likely to always be tied to Metallica and affect their overall popularity.
Obviously none of this has to do with the important issue of whether the album will be good. I'm working to remember that it won't sound anything like I expect, and if I keep an open mind, I'll be able to give it a good listen. If I expect MOP2, I will be disappointed regardless.

i've been reading the metboards and i'm kinda curious about how u guys feel regarding bob rock and metallica in the 90's

Posted by xino @ 05/03/2008 07:00 PM EST

There's not a damn thing wrong with 90's era Metallica. The only thing that used to annoy me is that they would go out of their way to not say "metal". They'd say "rock n roll" or "hard rock", and I know they don't want to be pidgeon holed, but c'mon fellas. If metallica were to put out an album full of spoons, whistles, and banjos, it would still be Metallica therefore rendering it Metal. Re-Load is a pretty decent album, Load is great, and The Black Album is one of the best albums in history regardless of genre. Re-Load had the most filler between songs like Slither, Attitude, Better than you, and Where the Wild things are. It always bothered me that Pantera stole a little bit of Metallica's thunder, and Metallica never put them in their place. For as much as I like Pantera, (I've seen'em both live) no one, not Slayer, not Pantera, no one lays the brutallity down like Metallica.... Period. Bring on May 16th

Agreed that Load and Reload were good (load especcially), but to this day I really don't why they didn't make them both one album and cut out some of the filler. The best of those two albums in one would be a fantastic release indeed. it's a shame, really.

3. until it sleeps
4. king nothing
5. unforgiven II
6. bleeding me
7. ain´t my bitch
8. slither
9. low man´s lyric
10. wasting my hate
11. where the wild things are
12. the outlaw torn

UPDATED NEWS!! Guys I just got back from the Grove (in LA) where I went to see Iron Man. As I'm standing in line to get my soda, Bob Rock gets into the line next to me and is talking on his cell phone, RIGHT NEXT TO ME! I kindly wait for him to finish his conversation before I freak out. Once he hangs up I tap on his shoulder and say "Bob Rock?". He says "yes.." and then we shake hands as I say that I'm a huge Metallica fan and that I was listening to St. Anger in the car ride over. I ask him if he wouldn't mind taking a picture with me, he agrees (twice - the first one was blurry).

Anyways, we start talking about the new album and I mention the latest news (Warner execs listening to song), and he says that he actually just spoke to Lars and that he's heard 8 of the new songs and that they are: around 8 minutes long, have really long solos, and that the songs sound awesome and very old-school!!

I ask him if we'll hear some new songs during the upcoming summer tour, and he says that we should actually hear the first SINGLE in a matter of weeks!! (So we should definitely hear new material this summer). He says he spoke to Lars and the album will be finished in a month!

This is AWESOME news, this is all true. I'm NOT making this up. This actually happened to me tonight, and I'm still so excited about it. I met Bob Rock! He looks like a rock star in person :) So cool. Very nice. I hope you guys enjoy the news as much as I did. I still can't believe this happened.

Posted by The General @ 05/05/2008 10:14 AM EST

Nice to see that V in James hands. There was an interesting interview with him in the new So What, and some pictures of him with some of his older guitars. I've thought for a long time that Load could have been one record, with some additional b-sides. If it was made today, I'd bet they would do it that way. Back then, they had the mindset that they had to release every single song. And I still say we would have never missed Unforgiven II if they never had made it. I'd still love to see the Presidio stuff released someday.

Posted by kurt @ 05/05/2008 10:56 AM EST

Just watched the video you mentioned, kurt. Had some crunch to it. Noticed that the Vulturous logo was also on an amp behind James. I'd also like to hear some Presidio stuff. Like I've said before, I'm sure they have tons of stuff that could be used for new records from that and the 50+ hours from the attitude and tuning room before they hit the stage. I hope they continue to do that for the tour coming up.

Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 05/05/2008 01:20 PM EST

There was a time when a number of bands figured that because you can get 75+ minutes on a single CD, than you should fill that whole single CD up. Metallica fell into that trap with the Load albums. I still think there's enough good stuff on both albums to cut it down to just one, but cutting a few songs from each would have helped both albums. As the Presidio stuff, a good way to fill the time between this album and hopefully the one that comes after is to finally give us another box set.

Posted by Trace @ 05/05/2008 02:23 PM EST

The return of the white V isn't the story here. Do you motherfuckers got ears? STANDARD TUNING. Pretty cool stuff.

Replying to zazula. I agree 100% they should have made one album. My combined Load/Reload album would be as follows: 1. Ain't My Bitch 2. The Memory Remains 3. The Cure 4. Until it Sleeps 5. Bad Seed 6. King Nothing 7. Devil's Dance (very underrated heavy song) 8. Bleeding Me 9. Prince Charming 10.2x4 11. Wasting My Hate 12. Slither 13. Ronnie 14. Fixxxer

Standard tuning? Interesting. I wonder how James's voice is holding up, too- obviously standard will put a bit more strain on his voice. Based on a few live shows of last year it seems that his voice was either really good (Lisbon Bootleg for one) or really freaking bad (bilbao, for one).

well he apologized to the people in spain about his voice, he said he was having some problems...

I actually took the best songs from Load and ReLoad shortly after getting them and made my own one disk, called it LOADS. Much better then with all the album fillers...

Another non-musician here. I can tell the difference in tuning better on studio recordings, but I wouldn't have picked up on that if it wasn't mentioned here. Nice lars interview posted on blabbermouth. Lars said the record should be out in september and this should be the last week in the studio.

I'm not ashamed. I just don't want to post my picture on the internet, even though it's anonymous.

Are we looking forward to the new album, people? hahaha....

I couldn't see a picture. Blurred out photo, you're kidding right? what is the internet coming to? Mass paranoia? Dude you have nothing to worry about with showing a pic of yourself. Ever heard of myspace or facebook? only about 400,000,000 pictures to choose from. I'm sure one of you won't do much harm.

Ah, that's a relief then. his voice was completely gone in Bilbao, it was quite hard to take, really.

Alright everybody, quick vote... Metallica's playing two shows next week, on the 16th and the 17th. Who thinks we'll hear a new song?

Posted by D-J @ 05/08/2008 02:28 PM EST

If anything I bet they only play one new song. I think they may think it's too early to play a new one, but then again it is their only 2 dates in the U.S. for a while so maybe they will.

DAVE GROHL's 'Open Letter' To METALLICA - May 8, 2008
Former NIRVANA drummer and current FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl has released the following "open letter" to METALLICA:

"Dear METALLICA,

"Hey, it's Dave! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1983. I bought your first album 'Kill 'Em All' from a mailorder catalogue called Under The Rainbow, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1983 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since (even 'St Anger'!).

"I can't wait to hear the new shit, and no matter what you guys do I'll always be first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I'm sure you'll come out and blow everybody's fuckin' minds, because you're fuckin' METALLICA!

"Good luck. And don't release it until it's kick-ass.

"Yours, Dave Grohl.

"P.S. Are you finished recording the drums yet?"

Nothing super important, but kinda coool.

Posted by Nick @ 05/08/2008 05:45 PM EST

I think Metallica will play a new song, just one. I'm hoping they will. And it looks like Dave Grohl is wanting to get a personal phone call from Lars.

Posted by booglypoo @ 05/08/2008 11:08 PM EST

I would like to hear a song with Grohl.

Posted by Nick @ 05/08/2008 11:36 PM EST

dave grohl is one of the best drummers around. it's not a surprise that he loves Metallica. only a few more days till some new stuff from the boys, hopefully one new track. Seems like its been decades since i've heard new material.

Posted by The General @ 05/09/2008 12:21 AM EST

sean- they didn't always play a half-step down, this was a thing the started later on, that darkened, and mellowed the tone. Eb is a very dark, mellow key, whereas E is much brighter and active. This is why composers write in different keys. Beethoven didn't put the 3rd symphony in Eb because he figured it would look the prettiest on paper- he picked it because he loved the sound of Eb. Now that they've gone back to standard tuning you will notice a major change to the sound of the band.

Posted by Chris @ 05/09/2008 01:18 AM EST

They started that during the Load era by the way. They had a few songs here and there in different tunning but the Eb didn't really start till the Loads.

Posted by Nick @ 05/09/2008 02:05 AM EST

Donington 95 was the 1st show they played half step down. They did it for James' voice

Posted by Jesius @ 05/09/2008 02:39 AM EST

If you want to be pedantic, it was the London Astoria gig in 1995 where they debuted the Eb standard tuninig. Who cares anyway!

Posted by F1XXX3R @ 05/09/2008 03:05 AM EST

Also: God that Failed was in D.

I wonder why they didn't keep on recording in E, though? Sure live it may be difficult, but in the studio vocals are another thing. It's a pain in the ass tuning down to Eb when you want to play along with some load/reload material.

Posted by caspian @ 05/09/2008 05:20 AM EST

I know what you mean, if I wanna jam for a couple of hours I have to retune my guitar about 20 million times between TBA and St Anger!

From Encycmet.com

Album updates by Lars:

Lars Ulrich told a Los Angeles radio station on Monday that the new site, MissionMetallica.com, will showcase a "making-of-the-album" like what was available on the DVD in the St.Anger package.. Ulrich explained, "We thought, instead of doing the DVDs and all that, why don't we just do it on the Internet and people can kind of tune in every day, watch clips, contests, get updates for what's going on with the record and kind of watch the last couple of months of song titles, album titles, final mixes...So it's kind of a little bit of a countdown type of thing. It should be fun."

"Knock on wood, this week is our last in the studio," adding that the group expects to get its ninth album out in September.

Ulrich said that fans can expect to hear new songs "about five minutes after we finish playing it -- thanks to the Internet,"

Hallelujah!!

Posted by Escapist @ 05/09/2008 08:12 PM EST

The 1st 5 albums are standard tuning except for "The Thing That Should Not Be" which is dropped D tuning;"The God that Failed" which is in Eb (half a step down)and "Sad But True" which is a whole step down (D). The Loads are Eb. ("Bad Seed" is Eb then dropped D...well dropped Db, I guess. The new stuff on Garage Inc is Eb except for "Sabbra"-Standard E, and "The More I See" (Same as Bad Seed). Disappear is Eb. St. Anger I think is down a whole step ( D) and mostly (if not all) Dropped D (C) tuning. Did I miss any?

Posted by EET FUK @ 05/09/2008 11:28 PM EST

Invisible Kid is in G#. WAYYYY down.

And everything else in St.Anger, with the exception of Dirty Window (which is Drop D down one semitone) is drop d down one tone.. or drop c if that's what you want to call it.

So, Metallica will start a couple days early with the benefit show at the Wiltern on Wed. May 14th! Pics are up from this week's rehearsal. Band are sounding great, and are having fun playing "new shit, old shit, and new-old shit." Don't forget, Mission Metallica on Monday, May 12th!

WAIT. . . ONE MORE!!
5/9/2008 [ back ]

Our friend Flea asked us if we could squeeze in one more day in Los Angeles and we just couldn't say "no", so we're honored to partake in the annual "Hullabaloo" benefit concert for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music to be held at the Wiltern Theatre on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, along with our buddies Scars on Broadway.
Flea and fellow musician Keith Barry founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in 2001 to help fill the void left by music education program cuts in public schools. Money raised by the benefit will go into scholarships for low income students who would otherwise be unable to afford instruments and/or lessons and will help expand the school's summer camp program and fund a new building. For more information, check out www.silverlakeconservatory.com.

Tickets go on sale on Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 10:00 AM through www.ticketmaster.com and will be $200. A limited number of VIP tickets at $500 will be available only for purchase at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music (3920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90039) or by calling 323-665-3363. VIP tickets include reserved Loge seating, giftbag, two drink tickets, and entry into the Silverlake Conservatory after party held at the Wiltern.

Met Club members: Check www.metclub.com for information about a special pre-sale for you.

VINYL. . .TAKE THREE!
5/9/2008 [ back ]

As promised, June will see the re-release of "Master of Puppets" on vinyl . . . the retro summer continues! Following on the heels of "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride the Lightning," we dusted off the masters and MOP will come out in the same formats - a single disc at 33 rpm and a deluxe two disc version on 180 gram vinyl spinning at 45 rpm.
Look for "Master" on vinyl to hit the Metallica.com Store and your friendly local record shop on June 17, 2008 in North America and damn close to that date in the rest of the world. You know the drill . . . we'll keep you posted here! And for those still following along, yes, "Justice" is up next . . . probably some time in August.

It's hard to explain, but I can kinda see where they are coming from when they say it's the album in between Justice and Black. Those songs for what I have heard have the attitude and rawness of Justice with Black lyrics and a little bit of a Black sound. Meh my opinion. I need a single!!!

Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 05/11/2008 11:14 PM EST

Those riffs aren't exactly AJFA quality, but they're pretty short samples so it's quite hard to tell. I'm looking forward to this a great deal, though.

Posted by caspian @ 05/12/2008 01:30 AM EST

The riff during the suicide song or w/e sounds a bit like AJFA and ReLoad. I like it. It helps to listen to it with some nice speaker, u get the full sound. I didn't before and when I did I noticed that the first song played in the "teaser" starts out with a bass solo and drums.. sweet!
