03/31/2008 Entry: "ANOTHER TOWN, ANOTHER GIG..."
So when Metallica.com posted a notice of a tour announcement coming today, most folks figured it was the Reading Festival which is slated to announce their line up later today (at about 6:45 EDT). Turns out, Metallica will be headlining another US gig... the rumored (and then thought canceled) KFMA Day in Tucson, AZ at the Pima County Fairgrounds on Friday, May 16th. Tix are $30 and on sale this coming Saturday.
Metallica.com hints at other impending tour announcments, including the suggestion we there will be more today - is that the Reading-Leeds gig?

Lars said we'd hear something new from the live gigs to come. I have a feeling that will be the only hint we get about anything until they start announcing release dates for the fall.

what about the Metallica logo used on the KFMA flyer? looks like it was peeled of the MOP album. Hopefully they'll stick with this logo on the new album instead of the new one.

Hope this isn't an April Fool's Joke...
posted from Blabbermouth earlier on April 1st:
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has commented on the band's headlining appearance at this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals, which will happen, as usual, in England over the August Bank holiday weekend from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24.
"Alongside the hallowed turf of Castle Donington there is no place in the UK that is more historic or more of an honor for METALLICA to play than at Reading," Ulrich told Kerrang! magazine. "Back in the day when I was first tripping on music, I'd look at the line-up and see bands like IRON MAIDEN, UFO and WHITESNAKE headlining, so for us to be asked to come back yet again and stand at the top of the pile so to speak is an absolutely tremendous gift from the organisers. It's just such an absolutely incredible thing to be a part of.
"I remember playing the festival back in '03 and getting the chance to close down Reading, and that was such a massive feeling to carry around," he added. "The fact that they've asked us to come back and do the same thing again is absolutely huge in my eyes. We headlined Wembley last year, did Download the year before, and so playing Reading and Leeds just seemed like the obvious thing to do. In my eyes it's still one of the biggest and most monumental music festivals in the world, and with bands like SLIPKNOT and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE playing I'm sure it's going to be one of the best line-ups that people have seen in quite a while."
Ulrich said fans can expect to hear some new material from their forthcoming ninth studio album.
"We're psyched to play some new songs," he laughed. "In fact, if we don't, then I give people permission to come and find me and slap me across the face! We're certainly planning on rolling out some of the new songs for the first time, but right now our focus is on finishing the record. As soon as that's out of the way, we'll be hitting the rehearsal room and getting to grips with playing these bastards live!"

If it is indeed a September release for the new album, there's good chance that a single will already be out by the time they play Readings and Leeds. My guess is that Bonnaroo is the show in which they play something new for the first time, as that should be around the time that the album is announced. Again, assuming the album is out in September.

As a New Yorker, I am so happy that Metallica won the March Madness thing. I was realy afraid that the Foo Fighters ( No offense to them) would win, or some band like them. I'm a little surprised that they faced off against Pearl Jam and won it by very little. I like Pearl Jam since the first time I heard "alive", but kinda lost iterest in them from the last 7 years or so. Just goes to show that everyone who lovs hard rock & metal, knows Metallica is the shit!! And I'm also pretty damn sure that everyone wants them to put out some new music that will hit everyone like Justice & the Black album did. We need good rock/metal today. Thank God 92.3krock is back and is doing the right thing & having our favorite band as their kings!! Now only if my NJ Devils will win the Stanley Cup this year....what a year it will be!!

ok, so in the interview posted by TTTSNB, we get Lars saying there should be a new album "three or four weeks beforehand". The show is in August, so we're talking late July? or is that when they'll finish the album and we won't see it in stores until September? Clear as mud.

Do not use the Lords name in vain. You should say Hitler or something instead if you are mad.
Anyways, I am thinking Lars meant they will be done working on the album before the Leads festival and it will probably be released in September, but maybe a single out by the time the festival happens?

Not to get into a religion discussion, but I agree with manguy about the Lord's name in vain thing. But I love the suggestion, say Hitler! And for those people that like to say His full name (JC), how about exclaiming "Saddam Hussein!" ?! It has the same sort of ring to it. On to Metallica... All I know is I am hoping to hear a new LIVE Metallica song on May 16th when they play Arizona. Looks like thats 6 weeks away! We should have a countdown timer somewhere, counting down the time in weeks, day, minutes, and seconds until a likely new song!

....... or maybe not... maybe it is when they finish. But I dunno, if he said they are going back and giving the songs titles... that pretty much sounds like they are done now right? James has GOT to be finished his vocals by now and then they are gonna draw song titles from his lyrics... I dunno, I'm thinking maybe a July album boys :)

Lars Ulrich recently spoke to NME magazine, issue out now. Some excerpts are below regarding the new album:
Hows the record going? Lars: We're pretty much at the end of it. As they'd say in football, we're coming up to the 85th minute
What's it sounding like? Lars: It sounds very lively, very energetic, very heavy metal. It's got very lively, raw playing, but it still sounds sonically great. It's big, it's fat and it's fucking lively.
Would you say it's a return to the classic Metallica sound rather than that of St. Anger? Lars: Yes, if "classic" means those records from back in the day. St. Anger was more of an experiment we had to do for our own sanity, this is more in tune with the stuff we did in the '80's.
Are there any details you can share about the songs? Lars: A couple of weeks ago we sat down and said, OK, it's time we stop calling them '10' and '19' and 'Munich' and 'German Soup' and whatever else we called them when we wrote them. We're actually all going to meet next week and sit down and throw some real song titles at each other.
What titles will you be pitching? Well, it always goes between "Fuck your Mother twice" and "Metallica and other addictions" or one of my other favourites "Metallica sucks". Those are always good to come back to when all else fails.
what does that mean? that the songs and lyrics are still not done? if they would have the choruses already they wouldnīt have to think about songtitels :-(

santor, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read that quote. It seems like in the past, James would go and hide away, and come back with the lyrics and song titles. I thought this record was a return to that, and I thought the lyrics and vocals were completed! So where are the song titles? Not good news. But, if they say September, then September it is. And Lars said they would play some songs live during the summer, so I'm pretty sure they are almost done with the songs (lyrics, etc).

and regards to the solos. Just listened to that whole song again, man there are some really cool riffs from that song, I do hope they use some of that shit in the new songs, really kicks some ass. But if you think about it, Kirk really hasn't written a solo since 1997!!! It's been over a decade! So I'm thinking Kirk has got to have a build up of some cool stuff up his sleeve, the one from the New Song is a good indication...

Yeah, thats what I was thinking as well. Plus the other cool thing is that they mentioned some songs feel a little like Fade, Sanitarium, and One, ie, slow and melodic for 2/3 of the song, then an all-out slug fest for the last 1/3. I could definitely use some more of that... They say this album goes back to the feeling of MOP, yet sits between Justice and Black... I was thinking yesterday, how would Justice have sounded if Cliff had been there? How would Cliff had them build upon MOP? Maybe this album is going to be the closest answer to that question now that they are all at peace, not grieving over their former bass player, not hazing their new one... Again, this is the first album with Rob on board, much like Justice was the first with Jason on board, so thats yet another parallel.

I fear you may be right, but let's hope you aren't... Of course, there is another possibility... They supposedly recorded a few more songs that will not be on the album, so James could say "I have some good news and some bad news. Better yet, STP has reunited, is touring this summer, and will record a new album starting in November! I am a huge Core/Purple fan, but there's a few good songs off their other three albums. The last song they ever did together (but only made it on a greatest hits album), All In The Suit That You Wear, is pretty cool stuff. Here's a music video of it using World of Warcraft http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0cXV3_d0QU The new stuff is supposed to go back to the Core era. They will be playing here in South Florida at the Hard Rock Live on August 20th, so I'll be there.

That news was huge fail, but I'm pretty sure that NoNameGuy was being sarcastic. I certainly hope so, anyway :D

That is the first time I have really seen paparazzi like pictures of James. I was curious, but I'm of the opinion they should just let him relax with his family in peace. Damn, you go to Hawaii to the beach with your kids and there's some douchebag taking pictures of you.

Anyways, this vacation makes sense because he won't really have time during the summer due to the touring. I'm still trying to decide if this is good news or not (good if the album is so close to being done that they can take time off before touring, bad if we will hear that the album won't come out until December - then we will really have to slap Lars across the face :))

Hey... I know you bunch of Candy asses keep talking about the same old shit, and debating how James Hetfield should pose for pictures, but are any of you girls going to the May 16th show?

I was reading on encycmet that the album is finished and is ready to be manufactured. probably the album title is out also along with the album art. Why are metallica torturing so many fans with the lack of info. If they give us at least the album name and some art at least there is something to get refed up about. i'm really disapointed with that lack of info.

IS-JD, seems like the screen is off to the right on the sight. Not sure if I'm the only one seeing this. Hope to hear some updates soon from the boys. I've bene listening to Turn The Page a lot lately, including the acoustic one from the Bridge benefit. Right now, I think I prefer that one over the cover from Garage Inc. Maybe because it's newer. Hard to believe they played that 6 months ago already. Think I'll go look for the new vinyls today.

Speaking of the Bridge Benefit, I am floored by their acoustic version of All Within My Hands.

Its so melodic. Could be a hint of some of the types of melodies awaiting us on Number Nine. Number Nine... That would be so typical of Metallica to just call the album Number Nine...

Seriously, I can understand the people that wanna watch their idols 24/7, BUT I think we should leave them their privacy and leave it to them if they wannna share some of their family/private luck with us. When I leave for hollidays wouldn't want to have some f*ckheads surround me mollestin' my family and me all the time. James seemed to be pretty cool ( what a generous/cool gesture from him), but let these guys have their peace. They're not those " I use the media to become popular for f*ck's sake" people, like Tittney Spears etc. What would you think if you were sourounded by some folks that take pictures of you all the time while you're on vacation? That's a petty and a shame! F*ck that!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!Metallica 08!!!!!!!!!!

The encycmet article assumes that the album must be done because James is in Hawaii. At this point, I'm not sure I'll believe that the album is done after they announce it, have claimed to ship it, and I have it in my hands... basically, until I put it in the cd player and it starts playing, I won't be sure that it won't just be Lars going "yep, got ya, we'll be done in 8 more months after we record the glockenspiel parts and mix them into the vocals. James still needs to finish those too, sorry." And even when I hear the album, I'll still wonder if it's just some youtard trying to promote his band by claiming its Metallica.

I'm pretty sure this no-news thing is a backlash from the over-abundance of news updates we got from St Anger. I think they're going to let the music do the talking this time.
I picked up the new "The Sword" CD, Gods of the Earth. It's amazing and I'm glad Metallica picked them to play a few dates with. Pretty bold in my opinion. Also, Down is one of my favorite bands, so that lineup is like a dream concert to me. Ugh... if only it was for the US.

STP opening for Metallica would be my dream concert... I know they are different styles, but I don't care...

May is when the Metallimarketing machine starts firing up. Nothing to do with album release, I'd say.
