We were told March 14, 2007 that Metallica was in the studio. It was last May when Lars said that all the "backing tracks" were done. Metallica hit the road for Europe on the Sick of the Studio tour, where it was said that afterward they would hit the studio until October, effectively wrapping up recording their latest studio album. In July Lars predicted that James would lay vocals down in August, with mastering in November for an "early spring" release. Pictures on the official fan club site show the band in the studio as recently as December 10th.
Now Stereo Warning reports that the album may be delayed until September. There have also been rumors pointing to a March 18th release date. Either way, the silence from the Metallica camp has been deafening.
We do know that the band is hitting the road.... May 28: Chorzow, PL - Slaski Stadium May 30: Landgraaf, NL - Pink Pop Festival May 31: Getafe, ES - Electric Weekend June 3: Prague, CZ - Slavia Stadium June 5: Lisbon, PT Rock In Rio June 7: Nurburgring, DE - Rock Am Ring June 8: Nurnburg, DE - Rock Im Park
Comparing it to Chinese democracy(previous newsbit) may be an insult, on the other hand, in the last 10 years they have created 3 songs(2 S&M tracks and I disappear)and St. Anger(which I liked, although I consider it substandard for them). It should not take a band of this pedigree 2 years to make a record, even counting the breaks to tour. If you take a complete year off(following the st. anger tour cycle), you should hit that studio with a vengeance. They clearly have not done that. This is why I'm pissed. And you know what, even if this september stuff is BS, it still has been too damn long.

Where did this March 18th rumor come from?
Posted by Nick @ 01/23/2008 12:45 PM EST
All I know is these guys are breaking my balls bigtime... I have been searching for the latest news every day... Somehow I have started obsessing over it recently seeing how I figure we should be getting news soon... Its not healthy... I am seriously contemplating putting together a YouTube video of me as I await the release of the new album... It'll start out by looking like me, then the day before the album's release, I'll look like a shell of a human being...
Posted by D-J @ 01/23/2008 01:40 PM EST
I like the youtube progression idea... You can do it like "Waiting for Godot." As someone who remembers waiting for AJFA to be released (and walking uphill to the record store both ways--get off my lawn, you whippersnappers!) I am used to waiting a long time for Metallica albums. I just think at some point the "It's almost ready, 6 months thing" gets old. Sorry for the GnR parallel, I should have said instead that the album is going to be called "Duke Nukem Forever" which would have made my point without getting people's panties in a bunch. Whatever, I'm pretty much bored with this topic, and certainly with my own post... so here's my apology, and one more thing....
Posted by Azrael @ 01/23/2008 03:00 PM EST
Well, apparently metallica management has responded by saying there has been no delay, since no release date was set. And continued to say it will be released when it's ready. I got this from 4horsemensite.
Posted by kurt @ 01/23/2008 04:20 PM EST
The report of the delay did not come from management, it came from the record company - who I'm guessing expected any album to release sooner rather than later.
Some press indicates that the album is due in early 2008 - press that I'm sure had to come from some source... be it the label, management or the band itself.
Posted by IS-JD @ 01/23/2008 04:40 PM EST
I've got a strong feeling that it's probably ready (or very close to being ready) and there'll be an out-of-the-blue announcement in the next month from the band that it will be out in 3 or 4 weeks.
I think they're deliberately not saying much to increase the kick-in-the-balls effect we'll all get when we finally do hear from the band.
Have faith Metallibrothers (and sisters)

Well, I just emailed info@metclub.com begging them to give us SOMETHING as far as info goes... Maybe we should all email them! If I don't hear anything soon, I say we should make up our own speculation web site where we all submit fake cover art, album titles, song titles, and song reviews for the album!!!! HAHAHA!!! If anyone wants to run with this, just let the rest of us know the website and we can start making shit up!!! I am desparate...
Posted by D-J @ 01/23/2008 05:20 PM EST
OK - here's an album cover idea (pretty lame but it's something). It shoows how hard they've been working... Notice James is yawning and Rick is trying to pretend he's not asleep:
Posted by Waverley73 @ 01/23/2008 05:53 PM EST
Only slightly less lame (OK, I'll stop now):
Posted by Waverley73 @ 01/23/2008 05:58 PM EST
I hope they also release the new album on Vinyl. Does anyone remember how many more albums they're under contract w/ Warner Bros.? I can't remember when they talked about that.

March 18th would be nice. 2 days after my b-day. Couldn't ask for a better gift!! Like most of you,i'm getting so nuts for some news that I'm getting mentally drained which then makes me physically drained. Hope I make it til the album comes out.

5 years between TBA and Load, 2 years between MOP and AJFA, three years between AJFA and TBA, and 6 years between Reload and St. Anger (if you are only counting offical studio albums with new material)---none of us should be surprised. It doesn't make the long wait suck any less, but this isnt the first time we've waited a long time for an album from the boys.
Posted by EET FUK @ 01/23/2008 09:10 PM EST
It's been 5 years since St. Anger. I hope it comes out in march. It's been too long.
Man, I really want this new album to come out soon. I'm listening to Outlaw right now, and it's KILLING ME to have to wait for the new album! What really grinds my gears is all of this European touring....they better do a nice long tour here, in America when the new album is released! I'd like to see a Metallica/Trivium tour.
Posted by Davo @ 01/24/2008 01:18 AM EST
why would anyone like to see a metallica/trivium tour. Why.
But yes, this is really getting aggravating. If we're going to get another St.Anger, I'm going to be really quite annoyed.
Posted by caspian @ 01/24/2008 02:17 AM EST
Hey, changing the subject a little (well... a lot) - does anyone know what equipment Kirk was using during the recording of AJFA? i love his tone on that album.
Trivium tour? They suck live - seen them twice and Matt Heafy is such a Hetfield wannabe it's laughable!
Posted by Stevenfold @ 01/24/2008 06:01 AM EST
i believe he used ESP guitars, mesa or marshall amps and probably a tube screamer here and there...to get the tone of AJFA is kinda easy all u gotta do is turn the middle all the way down and crank the bass and treble knobs
Posted by xino @ 01/24/2008 08:32 AM EST
Cheers Xino, i think with my budget though i won't be able to afford that sort of gear!
Hey, why is everyone in the US so worked up that the boys haven't toured there in a while? You had the Summer Sanitarium tours a few years back! We Europeans have had the odd festival date but the last full tour was in 96... We need our fix too!
Posted by Stevenfold @ 01/24/2008 12:52 PM EST
What does everyone think about all of us here getting together and organizing an email barrage on Metallica.com??? If they all got 50 emails in one day from their fans wanting to know what the hell is going on... well... they can't really ignore us can they?
Posted by NoCreativeNameGuy @ 01/25/2008 12:29 PM EST
It's been so long I have lost interest. Maybe they would be done by now if they didn't have to escape the studio so much. With each year that goes by their revelance diminishes.
Posted by Dave @ 01/25/2008 12:51 PM EST
I found out the new album's title and track listing!!!
The album is titled: The New Album
The track listing is:
1. New Song #1
2. New Song #2
3. New Song #3
4. New Song #4
5. New Song #5
6. New Song #6
7. New Song #7
8. New Song #8
9. New Song #9
They may have a bonus track called The Bonus Song on their European release.
Oh! I almost forgot, the release date for the album is UnknownMonth UnknownDay, UnknownYear.
Sorry everybody... This is just the only way I know to keep my sanity...
In all seriousness, I hope they don't just call the album Nine, seeing how its their ninth album. Although, if they had only nine songs on it, that would be pretty ironic... Also, I hope they get Pushead or someone creative to make an album cover a little more like their earlier ones...
Posted by D-J @ 01/25/2008 04:56 PM EST
What we need are audio papparazzi to try to sneak song snippets from Metallica and those around them... Like hang around Kirk's house and record any guitar solos he may play... Or plant listening devices in James' bedroom so we capture him singing new lyrics in his sleep... Or better yet, sneak into their cars and look for CDs with new stuff on them...
Posted by D-J @ 01/25/2008 05:05 PM EST
My predictions for song names...
Unforgiven 3, Shadows of the Cross, Dead Kennedy Rolls, New Song #1, New Song #2, Bass Solo Take 2, Floods of Vomit, Astronomy Domine, Waylon Medley, Devil's Prance, One Minute Closer to Death (than I was a minute ago), Glass Cow, Killing Me Slowly (with his song), Bat Out of Hell's Bells, I Reappear, Visible Kid, The Call of Sulu, Outlaw Porn, Posable Heroes, Creaping Breath, Whitened, To Live is to Sigh, MotorBeth, St Wanker, Master of Trumpets, My Friend from Missouri, Holier Than Cow, and new fan favorite Everything Else Matters!

although i have been waiting since 1988 for rambo 4 and i got it and i never thought it would happen so my eighties nostalgia for metallica still has hope with this new album...and stallone kept it gangster and grew back the mullet for rambo and as anti-image thrash metal wuz it created its own defined image which is important..becuz you know james long hair and black explorer in all black wuz badass and enter sandman wouldnt have been half as badass in 91 without it.image completes the art ..weather its movies, video games or music.

TIPPER... That was funny, my friends from missouri... hahaha. Who's the idiot that said Metallica loses "relevance" with every year? Anyhow... read Slash's book, and it was a good read. He did touch on a couple of things with Metallica, but it wasn't like it was about Metallica... some of the ignorance here is hilarious. Anyhow, best bio hands down is Nikki Sixx the Heroin diaries. No band, and I mean, no band can compete with the crue and partying. Um... listening to Avenged Sevenfold's new album... I really love it, plus the opening line in the song "critical acclaim" goes... "...like me motherfucker you've been at for too long". I wanted to hate them, but God Damn it, I don't! They're a blend of Iron Maiden and Guns n Roses. I think they're cool. For all you posers in here, there's more than Metallica in the music scape. Been listening to alot of Alice in Chains as well... Dam that river is gettin' it for me lately. I do like the new wave of thrash like Trivium. Those kids can play. The bands I can't stand are a bullet for my bleeding through the black dahlia murder atreyu valentine. Gay gay gay! Is it just me, or were Pantera always a bunch of posers? I used to really like them, but now I really loathe them including Dime. Yeah he was talented, but give me a fuckin' break... he's not Jimi Hendrix! Hell, Mustaine and Hammett are where it's at for geetar playing. Don't argue with me because I will jack you up... and I'm grouchy because I've got a nice hang over! Seeing an ex will drive you mad, and I'm sorry to say, that I ripped apart the bathroom at a local bar last night. Metallica will rule like always, and read Slash's book! What else... oh yeah... instead of putting up an easy find from you tube, here's the medley from MTV europe in 96.

It's funny, it was Load that got me into 'tallica and it was almost 2 years after till I got down with the '80s Thrash-tallica. I am pretty optimistic about the new disc, a sub-par album IMO (St. Anger) can be a good thing, a good refrence point, and now they know they can do wrong, they'll pick up their socks and kick ass on this next record
Posted by Yukoner @ 01/26/2008 06:47 PM EST
I listen to way more music than just Metallica, they are just my favorite band of all time. They mean what the Beatles and The Rolling Stones mean to my dad. Killswitch Engaged is some sweet shit and Stone Sour... for new stuff.

I haven't popped in the studio albums much either. Mostly concert bootlegs. Although I've got all the studio records on my ipod. I've ended up burning best of CD's out of my itunes library. It has seriously cut down on the size of my portable CD carrier. Plus, if my car got broken into, so what, they got homemade discs, I can just burn em again. I didn't make a metallica compilation though, since there's not many songs I would leave off, I just keep all those originals in the car. That said, they are still pissing me off.

Posted by Tony @ 01/29/2008 09:50 AM EST
It was one of those vids that seemed to take forever to find, but if you all want to find it, go to youtube, and type in metallica mtv in the search box. I know that we're all clamoring for a new album, but the wait should make it all the better. From reading Guitar World, to Revolver, it sounds like it's going to be up there with the "first 5". I've really been liking Avenged Sevenfold's new album. I really wanted to fuckin' hate it and I don't. It's a lot more commercial than they're other stuff, but that opening song just fuckin' jams. It's hard not to crank that up. What else... still can't stop listening to Machine Head's The Blackening, even been listening to Megadeth's last outing. What the hell else have I been listening too?... Michael Jackson: Off the Wall, and Thriller, Tupac: All Eyez on Me, Dr. Dre: The Chronic, Ghetto Boys, George Strait, Some poppy reggae like Big Mountain, Rick James, Old R n B like The Delfonics, and please don't laugh... Fergie... I hate all her music, but thanks to my girl, her big girls don't cry song has kind of grown. Ugh... I can't stop listening to St. Anger, well "My World", "Sweet Amber", "St. Anger", and "The Unnamed Feeling". I'm starting to appreciate that album again. No it's not Metallica's best, but that's the only Metallica I've been listening too. Be nice dammit!
Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 01/29/2008 10:08 AM EST
Look at this, for all those who talk shit about metallia live. That sounds like shit, I will post other bands live to prove that metallica is better live
Tom... buddy. Metallica is the heavyweight champ. Slayer just sucks... I do like Reign, and South of Heaven, and in concert they're not bad... just not great. Mudvayne... they don't bug me one bit... not my thing too much, but I'll take them over that horrendous barnum & bailey circus act slippedaknot. I know GnR is more or less Axl by himself, but the one show I got to see, he threw a tantrum and left, and make no mistake, they were/could still be a great rock n roll band. I love GnR again, after years of hating them. Anybody else in here like the group "Hurt"? Some of that radio rock isn't too bad

Posted by caspian @ 01/29/2008 06:51 PM EST
..Also, posting 3 youtube videos doesn't prove crap about Metallica be good or better then other bands live.
Having said that, Metallica's shows last year were EPIC, although it seems that Lars's drumming is slowly getting weaker and weaker. It's hard to fault everyone else though, particularly Trujillo, who is just really, really tight.
Posted by caspian @ 01/29/2008 06:53 PM EST
Tom... your posting of the youtube video's was just a waste of time for everyone. How can you even compare these "Acts" with the powerful metallica? Metallica is their own leage of music. They just can't be compared. GNR are great, but very unpredictable. NOw, if you had mentioined bands like Megadeth you could put them in the same vicinity.
Posted by Bond @ 01/29/2008 07:27 PM EST
I noticed @ 1:11 on the Mudvayne video, some guy had on a MetallicA tank like Rob wears. Other music I've been listening to: Chevelle- Vena Sera. Foo Fighters-Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace-listened to the title track a lot today, while being on the road. Metallica-Puppets, Disturbed-10,000 Fists, Days of the New-their Green album, Lifehouse, Garth Brooks. Heck, I probably switched CDs 5 times on my way to Chicago w/ the lady on Saturday when I was driving. I'm sure it was driving her nuts! I've been listening to the Bridege benefit a lot on youtube. I need to break down and get that from livemetallica. James' voice is really good on it! I would be okay with a ballad on the new CD.

I have to post this stuff I am going crazy waiting for the release date.
I'm somewhat familiar with Bourbonnais, Blaster. I've been there for sales calls. I'm on the raod at least once a week. Are the Bears still having their training camp there? Can't wait to hear some new 'Tallica and see 'em live! An update would be nice. I think we got spoiled with the JITS stuff from St Anger. I know I'm also stating the obvious...
Posted by The Thing that should not be @ 01/30/2008 01:26 PM EST
This Mechanix version is so bad. I would like to love Megadeth but i can't hear him sing more than 10 seconds... and i have to say that in this version, 2 seconds was way to much!
There is some pretty good peices of music in Megadeath, but for me it's pretty straigh forwards songs, like a big riff of 5 minutes, not as much definition that other bands, including metallica, can bring to a song...
Posted by Bleeding @ 01/30/2008 06:49 PM EST
was the drummer wearing receiver gloves? and mustaine sounds like a chipmunk, and STILL talking about Metallica, jeez.

It's nice to know that someone else is listening to a pretty eclectic variety of music Thingy. Who says MetallicA's gotten weaker? Sure there are younger bands, but fuckin' A right doggy! No other band has stuff like: Sandman, One, Sad But True, Bells, Fade, Seek, Puppets, Battery, King Nothing, Fuel, and others. Until someone has those songs in their set list, not one fucking band can touch Metallica, and I think Lars problem was called "Bobrockitis". It seemed like since the woodstock 99 show he was pretty sloppy, but I'll tell you what, all the 2007 shows he's back to being one of the top drummers. No he was never technical, but fuck it... He's been dead on, and fuckin' furious with the speed stuff.
Posted by MOTORBREATH666 @ 01/31/2008 09:02 AM EST
Even after 25 years Metallica has maintained a pretty good(actually, a awesome) reputation when it comes to the "needy gritty sound of music". Megadeth is a real good band(s) however they just lack that extra 10% (most their songs are 4:00 min long). Imagined if Mustaine had staid with Metallica. By 85 the band would have been history, and there would be probaly no songs such as Puppets, Disposable, ONE, Eve, Battery, Sanitarium, Sandmanb, Fuel, Roam, Matters, etc. And I'm sure no other bands could immitate Metallicas music.
Posted by Bond @ 01/31/2008 10:04 AM EST
metallica rules because they are real and aware of their surroundings
they stand out for so many obvious reasons, but i'll just name a few..
no one comes close to lars when it comes to stylish drummers. THE REST SUCK, stiff backs and just straight up Geeky hits. Technical or whatever, but it's not a computer, it's a drumset..
James writes deep lyrics that can be interpreted from many points of view. Not to mention it's the kind of lyrics that gets people to yell the words out loud.
Overall Metallica rule the world simply because they are smart. They didn't reach more people for no reason. They are genious, because they acquired so many fans. You can't do that by strictly doing 1 thing for 20+ years. Some bands continue to do the same old thing and that's why you don't hear them on the radio. That's why they turn into whiny babies like Mustaine.
The worst thing I see going on is people selling Metallica short, when they have no idea what it takes to make an album. Think about how shitty all those home-made demos sound of all those people across the world. TERRIBLE, DESPICABLE!!!
You'd be lucky to spend 3 years getting 5 fans to listen to your music regularly. Now upscale it a bit and think about Metallica and the millions they've reached.
They are in a class of their own, obviously..but some dweebs don't realize that yet, and maybe all it takes is less beer, less living in the past, looking in the mirror, less jealousy, better speakers, better headphones, meditation to pry open their pea brains
Say there was this huge party going on.. Bunch of people all different ages, all wanting to have a great old time, who you gonna get the scientist/technical geekazoids, or the stylish hard hitting groovy hipsters
the choice is very easy
I don't deny that any other band exists. I don't deny they are good musicians. But songwriting is a whole other beast. Getting people to move is a whole other story
Metallica shouldn't be considered Rock or Metal, they should be considered HEAVY GROOVE
the groove is what is normally missing when I listen to all these metal freaks, and even if it's there, each member comes up short and it ends up sounding like a rip off of Metallica, and sounds oh so cheesy
Posted by Tony @ 01/31/2008 11:56 AM EST
I don't totally agree about labeling Metallica "heavy groove", but I know what you mean. Most metal bands out there don't do it for me. There is just something about Metallica's groove and everything else they do that is just perfect to me. The other metal bands aren't hitting that sweet spot, that groove that makes them gods.
Posted by Nick @ 01/31/2008 01:45 PM EST
O by the way some bands I enjoy lately are Breaking Benjamin, Theory of a Deadman and Seether. I plan on seeing BB and Seether at the rave in Milwaukee soon. My thing is if anyone else agrees with me... Y the F*** would Seether open for Three Days Grace and BB? I thought that was very odd... Anyways if you haven't heard Theory of a Deadman, I strongly urge you to give them a shot! They are like a Souther Rock meets Alice in Chains type band. They are one of my favs after I saw them live. They did a cover of Midnight Rider.. wow.

oh yeah, those guys crack me up.. "well i'm running back and forth, from here to south carolina"...
it made me laugh more than anything but in a good way. that voice is hilarious.
It's cool maybe a few times, but obviously nothing close to the Mighty Met.
I think a lot of people's misconceptions come from not seeing Metallica live. They don't understand that whole energy that's in the air. You know, wherever you are in the stadium you can just yell Metallica and everyone in that vicinity will just go nuts.
It's above and beyond, and honestly I've seen Metallica many times, but the most recent concerts I've been to were toned down energy-wise. People are way more laid back than I remember them being 10 years ago. I guess everything slows down. I'm just so grateful that Metallica hasn't stopped. They continue to do what they do best, and if everyone is uptight at their shows, atleast they're pounding it onstage and running away with the ticket money. God bless 'em.

from the MetClub:......................................
Hopefully you all know by now, the boys will be heading back to Europe this summer...just a friendly head’s up that a few more shows are coming your way as we’re getting ready to announce dates on the second part of their summer vacation.
Most of these shows will have pre-sales for Clubbers only, so keep watching MetClub for more details. Big hint...you might want to start checking around 10:00 AM CET February 1st (that means 09:00 AM GMT, 04:00 AM EST, and as always 01:00 AM PST).
As for you Americans who have been having a good moan, we’ll have a little something for you next week.
No more hints for now...

if this album isnt out or completely finished by this european tour i think everyone should stay home and not give metallica a reason to play vintage setlist # 4857594893737

"oh yeah, those guys crack me up.. "well i'm running back and forth, from here to south carolina"... it made me laugh more than anything but in a good way. that voice is hilarious. It's cool maybe a few times, but obviously nothing close to the Mighty Met." - Tony
Your a moron. Did I compare them to Metallica? NO. I said they were a damn good band, and they are. Are they Metallica? NO, no shit. I love Metallica, but I have a life and I listen to other music. Seriously get a clue.

"Overall Metallica rule the world simply because they are smart. They didn't reach more people for no reason. They are genious, because they acquired so many fans."
The whole 'good because they are popular' is one of the worst arguments you can make. That means that Fall out Boy is good. Or Avenged Sevenfold is good. Or Britney Spears is/was good. And so on and so forth..
Also, I would agree with Sean. I hope the tour for the next album sees Metallica move on from their eighties glory. I hope they play large chunks of this album live, instead of the same old tired songs (particularly Sandman. Seriously guys, it's not that great a song, STOP PLAYING IT EVERY NIGHT). ...Assuming the new album is any good, of course.

Woah woah, first, Nick..no need for insults here tough guy.
And Caspian, it all depends what you define "good" as. Good at what??? I say selling the most albums is Undeniably GOOD period. At whatever it is you do, you're fucking good! Fall out Boy? Who the fuck is that? and Who will they be in 10 years? Same with Avenged Sevenfold.. These bands are good at what they do but they aren't good at selling records. What is "good" in this instance? BLACK ALBUM GOOD
yes Britney spears falls into that category, she reached that type of sales volume. now she can't wipe her ass without someone trying to take a picture
where you have the old, the young, the girls, the mothers with the words of Nothing else Matters in their head, that kinda bigness
Maybe you guys don't understand where I'm coming from. I can only think Big. Big scheme, big picture

Adding some sort of long term qualifier to 'popular=good' doesn't help much, either. By that assumption, the Monkees are good. The Eagles are good (for the record, they suck cock- and they've sold a lot more records then Metallica). Any terrible soft rock band that oldies still love is 'good'. Celine Dion is 'good'. And so on and so forth.
People are fairly idiotic in general. They go for that which is safe and bland- and so whether that's some soft rock, or saccharine pop balladry- or Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters- it's popularity is more to do with that then any sort of perceived 'goodness'.
