09/19/2007 Entry: "KIRK & RANDALL"
Randall Amplifiers Announces Partnership With Kirk Hammett of Metallica New Kirk Hammett Signature Line Will Include Custom Amplifiers, Heads, Combos and Preamp Modules
Chicago, IL. - September 20, 2007 - Randall Amplifiers, a division of US Music Corporation, announced today that they have joined forces with Kirk Hammett of Metallica. Hammett and Randall will be working together to design an extensive line of signature products that emulates the distinctive tones of Metallica's legendary guitarist. The full line of Kirk Hammett amps, heads, combos and preamp modules will allow guitar players around the world - from beginners to professionals - to harness the sound he uses both in the studio and on tour.
"Old-school tones and new-school technology attracted me to the potential that Randall amps have to offer," said guitarist Kirk Hammett. "These considerations are the answer to my continual quest for a well-rounded tonal palette and this flexibility also enables me to make modifications on the spot. I feel tonally emancipated."
"Everyone at Randall Amplifiers is truly honored to work with Kirk Hammett," said Doug Reynolds, Randall Division Manager. "His sound and playing style have inspired music fans for generations. With Kirk's collaboration and our continued dedication to create innovative, in-your-face amps, guitarists everywhere will be blown away with his new line of signature products."
Kirk Hammett is currently using Randall gear while recording Metallica's ninth studio album - set to be released next year. The album is being produced by Rick Rubin and will be the bands' first release since St. Anger in 2003.
Thanks to Andy!

Randall...? I mean, seriously, is there a worse guitar amp brand out there? Not quite sure what kirk was thinking here.
I mean, I guess they're good if you want a totally generic, digital scooped metal tone, but if you want a guitar to sound remotely interesting..you don't use a Randall, simply put.
Yes, Dimebag used Randall amps. And yes, his tone sucked.

I own (among others) a Randall G3 300RH top. The quality is pretty shitty, Randall shipped that amps although many have flaws (WAY too much Bass, crappy Distortion). I give Randall credit for the good prices and especially the (disappointingly discontinued) Jaguar speakers and cabs, those things rock! But I ain't gonna buy another Randall amp. No Randall can't beat the bite of a full blown Marshall or the sheer power of a (overpriced) Mesa.
Slayer's Hannemann and King still sound freakin' great with their old school Marshall JCM 800s, whereas Scott Ian fucked his sound up when he changed over to Randall i.m.o.!
Could it be that Kirk was a little bit flattered that they offered him an own amp line? Otherwise I can't understand this.
Ok enough gear talk. Hopefully his new amp inspires him to crank out some wicked fast solo stuff!! Keep it rockin'!!!!!

totally off topic, but have you guys heard the new AIC with the new singer? I think it sounds pretty slick. Just bought tickets to the acoustic tour they have coming up. Breezing through nashville on oct. 17th. should be good.

What do you think the new album will use for their Metallica logo? old school, Load, or StA?

|

hopefully old school graphics with a twist

I don't think they'll use St. Anger's logo, because I think they want to distance themselves from that, or at least the new album from that. It won't be Load. Maybe they'll surprise us with the old logo. But with a new stamp on it, like how every album before load had the same logo, but something different about it.

well, they did put the st anger logo in banners and promotions for this recent tour...so i think it'll stay
Posted by xino @ 09/21/2007 12:09 AM EST

I think so too. The St. Anger logo is supposed to be the combination of new and old, hence how the "M"'s are long kinda like the old school logo.
Do you think Metallica are still gonna use the ninja star in any way? Don't really see them use it on anything after the Loads...

General,
I was AIC open for Velvet Revolver (I actually went mainly to see AIC as I had already seen VR). AIC Kicked ass!! William Duvall is a great singer, close your eyes and you swear its Layne in his prime. Even if Layne was alive, he was starting to lose it live.

The great thing about Alice in Chains was that it was never just Layne singing.

yeah jerry cantrell is the glue of AIC. his guitars and vocals are pretty strong. And if Hetfield will share the stage with JC, then he's got to be good. maybe they'll tour together. I wouldn't mind seeing COC again. Its time for Metallica to cover a Corrosion track.

C.O.C. rock big time! Pepper's guitar playing is very cool, whether it's Down C.O.C. or whatever you can always recognize his sytle. I.m.o. the Loads have been a lil' bit inspired by it especially songs like ain't my bitch or that heavy groovin' riff of 2x4.METALLICA '08 LIVE DOMINATION !!!!!!!!!

Duvall is a freakin' great singer! When I saw them the first time with him doing the vocals I couldn't believe that this was really happenning. Close your eyes and you think its' Layne singing (in his absolute prime). Songs like Down in a hole, Rooster just send you the nshivers down your spine!!! Jerry seems to be pretty down to earth. Very cool. Great guitar player and songwriter!

I moved over the weekend and still no new 'TallicA news. The Wait....Speaking of MetallicA, I listened to I Disapper yesterday. In the beginning, you can hear Jason say something like "You be here and that's that" and then you hear a girl's voice, but I'm not sure what she says. Also, the drum sound is also different on it, too. I know it's probably old news to some people, but at least it's something to talk about. I HATE moving! I think I'll hire movers next time.

That's a good idea general. I was actually thinking about a year & a half a couple days ago, now I gotta watch it. It's a great thing to watch and I haven't seen it in a long long time. Have it on video, but since I bought it on dvd I haven't watched it. Since then, been watching cliff em all, cunning stunts, & s&m. Like many, I'm bored with no news.......guess they have a lot of stuff going on and I guess thats good. Hopefully, next time we get an update it will be a big one and worth the wait. A little bit off topic, but has anyone seen the Iron Man movie teaser trailer? I'm a big Marvel fan an I loved what I saw....especially when a familiar song kicks in....got me pumped!!! Also, I saw Kerry King on VH1 about heavy metal...and I just wanted to wish him a very happy fuck you!!! FUCK KERRY KING!!

What was wrong with the Marshal amp? I hope the sound of metallica album will be solid as the previous albums from the 80's and early 90's. No drop tunnings and weird amp configurations. But Marshal amps would have been a better choice for Kirk, but I'm sure he knows best for his style.

A little bit about the Bridge School. Accoustic Recording: "We're still stuck in the studio, but when we were invited to participate in the 21st Annual Bridge School shows, we just couldn't say 'no'. We're going to record both nights (October 27th and 28th at Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, CA) "It's an acoustic show that NEIL YOUNG puts together each year in the Bay Area, and this is the second time for us. And all proceeds from the sale of downloads from these two shows will go to the Bridge School."

Hey Marshal,
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Marshall amps. Honestly, I'm a beginner with guitar and I've played marshall maps and I like them a lot. However, I never played a Randall or heard much about them, just hearing that Kirk is now involved with them made me think that it was a good amp. Now by reading some of your guys' reviews, I'm glad that I'm getting my Marshall mini stack. I just wanto have some fun, and if I get serious about playing then I'll upgrade to a larger marshall or something else. Been listening to ReLoad and while there are some great songs,it has to rank with st. anger as their weakest effort. I do get pumped up listening to fuel and am always air guitaring in my car. People must think I'm crazy when they see my stopped at a stop light.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the nominees for the March 2008 induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame were announced yesterday (Thursday, September 27) and they are MADONNA, THE BEASTIE BOYS, JOHN MELLENCAMP, DONNA SUMMER, LEONARD COHEN, AFRIKA BAMBAATAA, THE DAVE CLARK FIVE, THE VENTURES and CHIC. Five will be chosen.
Not on this year's ballot is the band that the web site Future Rock Hall considered the heaviest favorite to be inducted in 2008: METALLICA. Other acts that were snubbed include RUSH, KISS, JETHRO TULL, STYX, YES, GENESIS/PETER GABRIEL and ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA.

I haven't weighed in on the the Randall news yet. First of all, I am not a big fan of Randall's equipment. I owned a solid state twin chorus combo about ten years ago and its sound was ok at best, the dirty channel was crap but the clean channel w/ chorus was not bad. And after I got rid of the amp, I never really gave them the time of day. That being said, the people that are going huh? to Kirk's choice of Randall kinda reminds me of the reaction that Eddie Van Halen got when he announced he was designing an amp with Peavey. Let's face it-- Peavey wasn't viewed to be among the elite amp manufacturers of the day back then (they didn't have a reputation like Marshall), but the 5150 (and 5150 II) amps were simply mind-blowing--way beyond anything they'd made before. They were the work horse of EVH for the next 15 or so years and were used by countless others( I've even spotted one at Metallica's HQ in different video clips /pictures). My friend calls it the HEMI of guitar amps! So don't judge Kirk's project with Randall just yet. If he and Randall are really committed to hitting one out of the park, this sould be Kirks' HEMI.

Unamed Fan, they're aren't eleigible because Kill 'Em All wasn't released until 1983. They have to wait 25 years to be eligible for the RRHoF. They should be in there next year. They BETTER be, being the most successful, heaviest band of all time!

Yeah I think TTTSNB is right. Even though they were formed in '81, kill em all was released in '83. They must go by the first album's release date. I agree, they better be inducted next year!!! don't know if this has been posted but here you have some parts of a Kirk Hammett interview in "Rock Tribune" (dutch mag)
quite a lot of old stuff but anyway here it is.. well only the somewhat interesting parts..
Q: "How big is the impact of Rick Rubin on Metallica"?
A: Well he just has some great ideas about music, that's for sure. He says his opinion in all honestly, and that is something we really appreciate". The big difference with Bob is that Rick is not a musician, he expresses himself only in terms as "interesting" or "not interesting". When Bob did not like something he always came up with theoretical stuff we could apply to make a "not interesting" song better, for instance like playing it one note higher ofr something. Rick always keeps it simple, he just says " make it better". After all, we should have stopped working with Bob a long time ago. Well nothing against Bob, he meant so much to us and he has always given us the best he had. But we needed a new "fresh" approach, and thats what Rick has.
Q: It's a known fact that Rick does not like long songs. Still you played a song well over 9 minutes last tour (obviously the New song of course) so now Rick comes in and cuts all songs in half ?
A: Kirk (laughs) Well I can say that there will be some long songs on this new album, some parts even have an eastern twist in it. I think our longest song at the moment clocks in well over 9 minutes, and trust me, Rick thinks it's very interesting. I can assure all our critics that this time there will be solos, even James will do some solos on this next album.
Q: Metallica has always tried to be open for their fans. There always is a M&G when you play a gig. There also was "Some kind of Monster" well more open to their fans a band can't be I think. What do you personally think of all this?
A: I really regret the fact that we actually recorded this film. I was totally against the whole thing, but Metallica is a democracy. I was in minority so i had the accept it. I don't think that the rest of the world should know of our internal discussions. There were some really intimate moments which i think were not of any revelance to this film. Anyway, after all it sure has something positve, but it's not something that we will do again, that's for sure.
Q: What kind of music you like nowadays, from the so called newer generation?
A: Well the guys in Trivium are one of my favorites for sure. I also like Mnemic, they open for us in Denmark. But it's not only the metalscene which I like. I love Muse and the Mars Volta. They got a really different appoach to making music than metalbands, which i kind of like. Interpol is another band which I think are cool. I am definately gonna check them out when they start their set today.

The NOT DEAD title I think is bs, but I wouldn't be surprised if they do come out with another album like 9-12 months after the release of this one. Didn't they have like 20 songs written? I know Rubin came in and picked like half of those to work on, but they probably are going to do something with the others........unless they're planning to release the presidio stuff!!??. I can live with the Jan 18 '08 date, but I was hoping for it to come out by x-mas. I agree with Nick, a mix is good....makes the album more interesting and makes you want to listen to it more.

that is actually true sean, but hey at least they did it everything (unless u expect them to play some dance music) and now they're coming back to do what they like, as a musician i really admire these guys, its like they're artistically free and can do whatever they want with their music, coming with the loads wasn't a great carrer move after the black album, i mean they could've done another black album, that's what was selling right? but they did it for themselves, just like st. anger and now i hope this one turns out being a little more old school oriented.

well load backfired becuz alot of ppl were expecting metallica to save metal not join the alt bands esp by 96 nirvana pearljam alice in chains stone temple pilots etc were all going down hill by then so it woulda been perfect. so to me you can see it as metallica was making music for themselves with load/reload and st anger or you could say they missed alternative by 2 years and nu metal by 2 years..and now with the emo metal bands fading away theyre prolly gonna miss that by 2 yrs with this release. as 50 cent sed ppl dont make music for themselves if that wuz the case they would keep that shit in theyre headphones...ppl want there records to sell thats wut they say wen they dont sell.

Yeah, and 50 Cent has tons of experience in the music business, doesn't he?

50 cent has no place on this board. Only real musicians should be mentioned here. Also, this might sound dumb, but what are emo metal bands? Just don't know what the emo means.

You don't like 50 Cents? I don't care; that doesn't give you the right to piss on someone else's opinion.
Is he a real musician? Depends on your definition of musician. Obviously the man makes music. I think Sean's quote is a valid one... now, the rest of you need to get off your high horses and look at the statement as what it is.
Leave the 50 debate elsewhere.

jeez, he was making a comparison, not talking about his favorite 50 cent lyrics. It's true, people from blabbermouth DO love D&D and think korn and lump bizkit invented metal.

Before I speak I have seen Metallica live 10 times and they are by far my favorite band. Also Load is my 3rd favorite record of theirs MOP being #1 followed by Justice. The Sean guy does have a point, put aside the fact that he made reference to 50 cent. I think they keep making excuses for their records (the last 3) after the backlash. They should just say this is where we're at right now and stop just trying to please the crowd. Go listen to Load and tell me that isnt great work, its just not metal.

This band called Evile has just recorded their new album with Flemming and in an interview the guitarist of this band Evile states that Flemming confirmed that Lars did play Dyers Eve. Here is that interview:
UltimateMetal.com's Jason Jordan recently conducted an interview with EVILE guitarist Ol Drake. The following is an excerpt from the chat:
Q: It’s no secret that acclaimed producer Flemming Rasmussen, who produced METALLICA's finest albums, turned the knobs on Enter The Grave. Did Rasmussen exercise any creative control over your arrangements like Steven Wilson did with OPETH? If not, what was he like as a producer? Did he tell you anything interesting about Metallica that the average metalhead may not know?
A: "Flemming flew over to go through pre-production with us a few weeks before recording. He first came to one of our shows at glamorous Bradford. The next day he visited our rehearsal space (rundown warehouse with carpet) and we sat down and played through our 10 proposed songs. He sat and watched/listened. After each song he’d go through the good and bad parts of the songs. Funnily enough he liked pretty much all of it. I think there were only three or four things in all the 10 songs he made changes to for the better. As a producer he’s brilliant. I’ve said it before but he’s such a laidback, cool guy. It’s hard to not get on with him. His vision for the album was 95% exactly the same as ours. Things about Metallica the average metalhead may not know? Yes. Lars actually played ‘Dyers Eve’ so shut the fuck up already!"

I haven't posted in a long time. I don't know why they posted anything on the website. Waste of time. This long wait could have been made much easier if they released a DVD of the last tour, or the presidio recording to hold us over. Bottom line, 5 years is a long fuckin time between records. I understand why, but give us some filler material in between.
Made me some mix CD's of megadeth, maiden, priest, etc. to hold me over. The last Down CD is pretty good, but nothing on it really grabs my attention and makes me listen repeatedly.
Hopefully we'll start hearing more soon. See ya.

ya, ya, ya, yuck it up. They got caught doing what every team does. The same thing can be filmed from inside the booths, LEGALLY, and it is done by all the teams. Besides, since "cameragate", what is their margin of victory? You modify a line from Blazing Saddles......"We don't need no stinking cameras"

I hate the Patriots, and yes Kurt there ARE areas where you can film, BUT they are in certain areas with certain angles. You are NOT allowed to film the coaches, nor is that possible with the angles they are given (also monitored). They went over this on ESPN, so no, not everyone does it.
Anyways Metalicaland sure sux these days huh????

I love Patsies fan excuses. "Everybody does it!". Not only are the Patsies the only team that have been caught, but they were caught MULTIPLE TIMES. To think that is didn't play a role in there three Super Bowl wins in ignorant. They won those three games by a COMBINED NINE POINTS. And yes, they're rolling teams this season because they are a very good team, but karma will come back to haunt them, and they will lose. Oh yes, they will lose...

Well, if you think everyone isn't doing it, or a close facsimile of it, I'm not the ignorant one here. I'm not saying they didn't do it, but if it wasn't commonplace, how come so many NFL coaches are pissed at Mangini for opening this can of worms? Why? Because they are all up to something. If the coaches on the other team aren't smart enough to cover their mouths with the playsheet(gee, really hard to do), or, god forbid, mix up the calls, then they are the dumbasses.
Anyways, geez, total lack of news in metalliland. Maybe some info will come out when they play to two acoustic shows.

MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn has posted a lengthy new "diary entry" on the band's official web site. An excerpt from his posting follows:
"[Supporting] METALLICA at Wembley Stadium [in London in early July]. Duuuuuude!? DUUUUDE!?!?!? Such an honor. Handpicked. Last minute [as the replacement for BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, who had to cancel].
"To be honest, we thought it might be a bit rough just because we were thrown on so late in the game, our fans might not know about it in time, etc. But oh my god, dude.
"Let me preface this and start by saying that, straight up, the first three songs were literally the sloppiest we'd played on the entire 'Blackening' run. Jesus?! Guitar cutting out, broken strings, tech hands me my guitar wildly out of tune, Phil's [Demmel] wireless goes out... it was like, NOW?! Were gonna have all these problems NOW??!! Christ al-fuckin'-mighty! But you know what...it didn't matter, the crowd went friggin' APESHIT! The circle pit for 'Imperium' (which Monte Conner says is the new 'Davidian') was... just... oh my fuckin' GOD! We FINALLY pulled it together for 'Halo' and 'Davidian', and from 'Halo' on...the world just fell into place...everything got easy. Didn't know it at the time but [James] Hetfield watched us... from 'Halo' on... whew!
"MASTODON ruled, as always. But METALLICA, man, METALLICA... dude... untouchable that night. I've seen a couple bad shows from them recently, but man, they walked on fucking water that night. What a vibe. Setlist: impeccable. Between-song banter: hysterical. The crowd sing-a-long to the 'la-da-da-da' part, from the lone post-'Black'-album song they played ('Memory Remains')... it went on for two minutes after the song ended... goose-bumps man... fucking... goose-bumps.
"Hetfield hung in the dressing room, told us he's rockin' to 'The Blackening'. 'There's some epic shit on there.'... My brain pretty much imploded at that point... smoke out of the ears and everything... full-on frizzle fry.
"The afterparty was drunken insanity. I gave and received no less than 17 skull bites to Brent from MASTODON. But the highlight of it all was hanging out with Lars [Ulrich] after the afterparty, drinking a small ocean's worth of booze and picking his brain about every detail of the thrash era that I thought I knew about or wanted to know about. With Adam [Duce], and a small pow-wow of people, him and I held court for nearly an hour talking about everything from the years he followed DIAMOND HEAD around (he was in the rehearsal studio with them when they wrote 'Am I Evil?'), following MOTÖRHEAD around, Dave Mustaine, Napster, EXODUS, Baloff, Cliff, what their mindset was when writing 'Master of Puppets', who were their rivals at the time, the first time I saw them, what they thought of SLAYER back then... Dudes, I was in full-on METALLICA history nerd/geek mode, and it RULED 'cause he was spilling all the dirt.
"We raged on over to some fancy-schmancy hotel his friends were at, where, in between skull bites, WWE wrestling sessions and all of us flashing all of our penises at cars passing by, we talked the pros and cons of cocaine, while he fawned hopelessly over our publicity girl... it was c-r-a-z-y!"

Yes, I talk to lots of em!! No smartass, but sports radio is on at work all day long and they frequently interview NFL reporters, insiders, etc. Well as you would expect, here in Boston this topic was pretty much non-stop 24/7 for a couple of weeks. And according to those "insiders", lots of people are pissed at Mangini.
Back to met, I agree that the load type material fits the acoustic vibe better. On the other hand, it could be cool to hear how they try to handle some of the older tunes acoustically.

Nothing new from lars. It all sounds good, and I guess we can't complain cause they've already stated late 07, likely early 08. But if it were to be early 08, wouldn't we be hearing more by now. Something like, hey recording is almost done, hitting the mixing stage, couple of backing vocal tracks left. But we are not hearing anything like that whatsoever. I just hope the lack of news doesn't mean it's going to be mid or late 08.

Kurt, you seem like a level-headed guy and a true football fan so I say let's take a hit off of the ol' peace pipe. I will admit, I hate the Patriots mainly for their Super Bowl conquests and I could never understand why they were so good. I always believed that the MVP of that team was their coach. To be able to patch together a team of has-beens and never-was's and win multiple titles is beyond me. When this story broke earlier this year I felt like it all made sense. But, they're the best, so I guess I can shut up now.
Anyway, changing the subject, Metallica needs to release an album. Jesus Christ already.
Finally, Fuck Kerry King! Oh, and while we're at it, Fuck Jeff Hanneman too! Just for the Hell of it. I'm sure he could use a good "fucking".

Hey Seth in a way you can say hey I should shut up, look at the way they are playing and stuff. But those are VERY VERY VERY different teams. They revamped a lot to get where they are today, so looking at them today isn't very valid. I mean shit, look at the teams that go from 3-13 to 13-3 in one year. You just can't make that point when there are that many new players (moss, stallworth, welker, maroney, odalious thomas, just to name a few).

Peace pipe for certain seth(or at least a vodka and red bull). Look, I definitely got a bad feeling in my gut when this story broke. Whether this helped 1% or 50%, it doesn't sit well. However, I do beleive that all teams attempt this to some extent or other(or why would lots of teams have 2-4 different guys giving "dummy" signals, all this isn't just to avoid patriot watching eyes). Well, I read the link to the interview with lars(rather than just the quotes on blabbermouth) and it said the record should be out in february.

Seth, that band wasn't too bad. Riffs were kind of punchy @ 2:48. As far as MetallicA, if they do plan on releasing the CD in February, you would think we'd be hearing more about it. They'll want to start pushing this thing fast. I wouldn't be surprised if it kicks into overdrive by Christmas. Who knows, if they definitely plan on releasing in Feb., we might hear the single on the radio by then. That'll be a tough decision to listen to it or to turn the dial. I like to be in the moment, but on the other hand, it would be nice to hear the album in its pure form. I guess I'll decide when I hear it on the radio...One thing for sure, though, if they release it on vinyl, I'll definitely get it and leave it wrapped! One other thing, when they considered releasing St Anger w/ 4 different color schemes, I definitely would've bought those and left them wrapped up. I have seen some promotional St Anger posters w/ the 4 color schemes on them and thought about picking them up as collectors items on Ebay. I still want the vinyl box set. Sorry for the long ramble (Lars babble)!
