06/25/2007 Entry: "SPAM"
The sites been being flooded with spam comments. I'm going to have to try to upgrade the program we use to update the news. Hopefully, this update will go smoother than the last update I performed and there will be little or no downtime -- if there is some downtime, we ask that you please be patient and check the site on a regular basis. When the update is complete, there are a few spam safeguards in place -- most prominent to commenters a captcha will be in place.

Update #1... well, looks like the upgrades will be waiting til Thursday -- I'm working tomorrow, and most of you know it's a 24 hour shift, and Wednesday is my birthday... I might fit some time for in then.
To properly upgrade, I'm going to have to do a few reinstalls. The version we're using is 1.2, and we're needing to get to 1.7; so this might take a while when it comes time.

On the second night of the tour, they harkened back to last year by playing the entire MoP album from start to finish. Justice and Ride got dropped, and they played "The Other New Song" in the encore slot before Seek.

Any Metallica fan would get a kick out of this.... This is from when Metallica last toured with Slipknot. For the last song Slipknot played, Metallica came out and started moshing on stage with masks on. It is fuckin hilarious. Let's just say I am very dissapointed. I didn't expect them to re-hash that song again. The woah hoah bullshit is irritating. BUT, rumour has it it was requested in the meet and great. I'm hoping that is why they played it cause Rob said it wasn't going to make the album. I'm sick of this song. It's too generic and the woah woah part.. need I say more. I'm a huge Metallica fan, but dissapointed.

who cares which songs they played and if you think its a good setlist or not? I dont live in Portugal. What is great is it sounds like a Met concert from years ago; the standard tuning, the fire in James' growl has returned from the dead, Lar's sharpened drumming and double bass. Someone or something has lit a fire under the boys' asses and I cant wait for the new album.

Hey... I have no idea why I was banned from my work computer to post, JD got pissed when I was just giving him shit about the spam... it's hard to convey humor in type. All bull aside, I think that the "other new song" is probably one of those things to gauge reaction and a wait and see type deal... justice sounded killer, they sounded better than some of the stuff I pirated on you tube last year

the funny thing is I saw megadeth last week here in vienna, too. they were opening for black sabbath in canada. and now sabbath is opening for metallica. poor mustaine ;-) but the megadeth-gig was really great in the end, mega so to say!!!!!!!!

I just downloaded the Lisbon show from livemetallica.com and I must say it sounds awesome!!!
Last year I saw Metallica at Rock am Ring playing the whole MoP album, that was a big surprise..and I think one of their best performances of that tour. This one (Lisbon) may be even tighter and more energetic!!
So...I just wanted to share that with you.. It's worth the download!!
Oh by the way, is anyone going to the Denmark show? I think that will be a very very special one...

Downloaded the whole show this morning--it sounds TIGHT! my only complaint is the cheesy drum fills Lars uses in place of the classic fills (for example, the beginning of Creeping Death)but he's been doing that for a few years now. Other than that, an awesome show!

yeah, I know that justice wasn't perfect, and lacked a little, but at least it had most of the guitar parts and the solos were cool and lyrics were correct (from what I could tell). Im sure it will get tighter as the tour rolls along. Heard anything else that sounded special? They've gotta be tightening up Orion by now, and also Disposable. As long as they play the songs with the same arrangement as it appears on the album, I'll be happy. Never gonna sound as good, but they'll be close.---------how do the livemetallica downloads sound?

Kinda figures they would play those seeing the kind of crowd. It's a variety of fans so go figure they do all black album. Still good though. They sounded very tight, and I must say James vocals have gotten better since the last big tour. I wish they had more time on stage though, only 3 songs!

I just got done watching it and the guy that came on before Metallica was a complete jackass!
They sounded pretty tight. I'm glad to hear James growling more and more. His voice sounded great, especially during Nothing Else Matters. Also, his guitar sounded great at the end of Sad But True and the end of Nothing Else Matters. Just seems like he's having a lot of fun out there. Backups are also sounding better.

At big events like this, time restraints always play an issue and it looks like it did here as one song ended up getting dropped. I would like to have seen them do something that wasn't off TBA, maybe Battery or something.
BTW, in your total weird moment of the day, I was watching NEM live on my computer screen while Bravo was airing Sad But True.

The band sounded pretty good today. Vocally, they still need to tighen up a bit, but musically, I thought they were solid. Some cool things about the performance were Kirk's "Third Stone From the Sun" intro to Nothing Else Matters, Jaymz going a little crazy on his NEM matters solo, and the General got his wish--Het played and explorer the whole set. Was a little disappointed in the setlist, a repeat of the Freddy Mercury Tribut setlist. Sandman is a staple, but throw in somthing from the first 4 albums and maybe a track from the Loads/Garage Inc. period. Who was that guy that was speaking while Metallica were setting up?--what an ignorant fucking idiot! Speaking idiots, time to watch Spinal Tap.

Idk if anyone else noticed this, but at the end Het says take care of yourselves and "think for yourselves" makes you think about his intentions. Metallica isn't a political band that talks a lot of shit and I'm happy about that. But when he said that it made me think about how he felt. Everyone there is trying to tell what is and what isn't and Papa Het kinda just throws that out there.. I thought it was interesting.

Nick, I know what you're talking about when James said "think for yourselves." I also thought it was kind of cool that he threw that out there. I also noticed that when they got off the stage w/ Spinal Tap that they had the recording on there which said to BUY music online to reduce the use of fuel to ship CDs and stuff. Speaking of buying music, which of the summer perfomances do you guys think stands out the most so far? I definitely want to buy something from livemetallica.com.
Yeah, Sean, Fuel, Memory & No Leaf Clover are the newest songs they've played on this tour so far...not counting the other new song since it hasn't been on an official record.

Author and journalist Joel McIver spoke with James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo of METALLICA before their spectacular Wembley Stadium show on Sunday night (July 8). McIver has released the following excerpts from the conversation to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
Q: A lot of long-time METALLICA fans are asking one simple question. Is your new album going to be old-school thrash metal?
Trujillo: "There's a lot of everything, man. There's speed on this. There's a couple of tracks where you're gonna go 'Wow!' and I know you're gonna like it because it has the flavor of the old. But it has this kind of groove and power behind it that I think is us today. And then there's stuff that I think is pretty progressive. Sometimes, when you're in the thick of it, when we're all creating it together, it's hard to get the feel of an outside perspective. But then you get someone like Scott Ian from ANTHRAX, who is in the lounge waiting for us to go to dinner or something, and he's like 'Rob, man! That riff fuckin' ruled, bro! What song is that? Is that on the album?' and stuff like that — and you go, I think we're doing the right thing. I gotta say, the attitude and the conviction of the old school is there, the speed is there and the power, there's an element of groove there that's really strong."
Q: Are you contributing to the songwriting, Rob?
Trujillo: "Yes. This is a collaborative journey for us, and everybody's contributed riffs. There are some of my ideas in there, and there are a ton of James' ideas, and a lot of Kirk's ideas. Kirk was away a lot because his wife was having a baby, so often it was just me and James and Lars — so for me to witness the collaborative spirit between James and Lars was so motivating. It's kind of mindblowing. It was really neat and inspirational to see them both going back to the old-school method. The general spirit of a lot of these arrangements and ideas is taken from what it must have been like back in 1982."
Q: Does producer Rick Rubin make suggestions about the songs?
Trujillo: "Yes, he does. He actually makes suggestions, and you try them: some of them are great, and some of them aren't gonna work — but that's OK. Some of his words of wisdom were very inspirational in bringing this band back to the old school, and getting James and Lars to step back in time. It's pretty exciting, although it's not like there haven't been any headbutting contests: there's been a little bit of that, but sometimes that little bit of tension is good for the tracks."
Q: James and Kirk, you both played bass alongside Rob with SPINAL TAP at the Live Earth concert, also at Wembley Stadium, on Saturday. Did you enjoy it?
Hetfield: "Dude, I'm telling you, I told 'em yesterday, "Don't plug me in!" No, it was fun. He [points to Trujillo] ripped into this solo that was fuckin' unbelievable. I was like, 'Dude, why don't you do that with our shit? Come on!'"
Hammett: "I woke up this morning, and I'd been playing bass with my fingers — and my whole muscle all the way up my arm was sore. I just shook it out and it got better, but it's never happened to me before."
Trujillo: "When you're playing with your fingers in cold climates, and you're playing with these guys, your fingers want to cramp. Playing with METALLICA in cold temperatures is a taboo, man!"
Hetfield: "METALLICA give you the cramps!"
Trujillo: "We have a chiropractor guy who's with us."
Hetfield: "He's a voodoo doctor."
Hammett: "He's my personal assistant!"
Trujillo: "He's there and he makes things better. He gets in there and works it out in the forearm, and also in the bicep. It's like acupressure."
Hetfield: "He makes everything else hurt, so your arm doesn't hurt as much!"
Q: Robert, you've been a member of METALLICA for four years now. Do you remember much about your audition for the band back in late 2002?
Trujillo: "Oh yeah! [Therapist] Phil Towle was there and the cameras were all there, so it was kinda crazy. I didn't really know how to handle myself. At 11 o'clock on the first night, Lars said, 'Hey man, let's go get a beer,' and I was thinking, this guy could potentially be my boss, so I'd better go and have a cold one with him. I'm not a big drinker, but we ended up drinking until five in the morning. This guy's a crazy Viking, right? People talk about hazing — like the hazing that went along with Jason [Newsted] — and I felt in a way that this would be the beginning of their new version of hazing. I slept maybe three hours, and I literally had the worst hangover of my life — and then we went to the studio and I had to play. So on the DVD footage that you see of me doing my audition, I was pretty hammered!"

I'm pretty sure the 'woahs' in the new songs were because they didn't have the full lyrics yet. I wouldn't get too worried about that - seeing there's no guarantee that they'll appear on the record anyway.

just downloaded the show from nashville in 2004, has ktulu, i disappear, clover, unforgiven, disposable, FFWF, and it sounds pretty good. Might pick up that portugal show, but will wait till the tour is over just in case the play TUI and then I'll definately get that show. Still dont know why they played the EXACT same songs at the live earth as they did at the fred mercury tribute. we need some surprises on future setlists.

refering to the interview-link above kirk says the new album feels like the missing link between ....and justice for all and the black album. you know what: I start believing them now in terms of going back to the classic sound cause rob says something similar when he says the new album has the dynamics of master of puppets and the melody-style of the black album. my excitement keeps raising!!! the new interviews sound so good...

I've just watched wembley's video on metonour and athe meet and greet,a fan asks lars aobut the new album.Lars says tha it has some fast songs,they have 14 songs but the new album's gonna have 9-10 because they are long.Also looking at James,I think he has jis guitar upper than he had did all the other years and it looks kinda strange seeing the explorer like that.

Okay, I was away on holidays the last couple weeks and have been out of the Metallica loop the whole time.
Just from going through the posts here it seems the only new song Metallica played on this summer tour is "The Other New Song". And everything else seems to be the usual?

METALLICA Guitarist Says His Pet Dog Was Penetrated By Next-Door Neighbor - July 12, 2007
As a child of 11, guitarist Kirk Hammett watched in horror as his pet dog Tippy was penetrated by the guy next door. That's just one of many jaw-dropping facts we learn about ultimate rock monsters METALLICA in the new issue of British magazine Q.
Hammett explains: "I went to my neighbor's. The guy took down his pants and started having sex with the dog! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. When he got up, I just took the dog and left. She was still wagging her tail."
Other key revelations include frontman James Hetfield's jealousy over Hammett and drummer Lars Ulrich's massive consumption of cocaine. "I did not like being around them when they were on that stuff," says the singer. "I resented the closeness they had through their drug use."
What Hetfield and Ulrich did share, though, was their love of groupies.
"Those guys really went for it," recalls bassist Jason Newsted. "Lars would probably be the king as far as that crazy promiscuity goes. Blowjobs under the stage during the bass solo, that kind of stuff."

Lars said in that interview that they released 4 albums in 4 years. I guess they did w/ Load, Reload, Garage Inc and S&M. We've waited this long, Spring doesn't bother me that much. Granted, I'd like to hear it sooner, but we'll all have to wait.

seriously. One of the great things about Hetfield, besides being the best front man/rhythm guitarist ever, is that he is smart. Its not necessary to run your mouth about how you feel politically, keep that shit to yourself. Nobody wants to hear it. And he says that Rubin wants them get the feel from back when they were recording MOP. I bet Rubin realized that Puppetz was their most powerful album, and why not try and get that feel again. Hooray.

I thought what he said about Rubin getting the best out of the people he worked with sounded good. I just think that Bob Rock was too close to the guys to really push them anymore. When your friends with someone it can be hard to be an A-hole, even if you sometimes need to be an A-hole.

Check out blabbermouth. There's a couple of articles with links to press conferences in Moscow and an interview with James. The James interview shows him giving the most direct criticism for St. Anger that I have heard from anyone in the band. Stuff like: the sharing of ideas of everyone made it unfocused, it was more of a music statement than songs that they enjoyed playing live, they thought it would. Check it out.
Also, over at 4horsemensite.com there is an interview with Bob Rock that is a pretty honest assesment of the whole St. Anger time as well. Interesting read.

yeah bob rock summed up st anger perfectly.
mastodon is more progressive stoner rock..imo sounds like if DOWN was a BLACK LABEL SOCIETY cover band. love em or hate em but noone in that band can lift hetfield or mustaines torch. or testament or whomever but the guitar skill just is not there.

In the last few weeks there have been a lot of rumors flying around saying that I was detained by airport security in London while on tour in Europe. I'm here to tell you that it never happened . . . pure fabrication! The story is simply that there is no story . . . it's scary how gullible and easily fooled the press is!
With that said, we had a blast out there on the "Sick of the Studio" tour and big thanks to everyone who came out to the shows and to the crew who made it happen. Now back to the studio . . .

Although this thread is going in a completely different direction right now, i was just looking through fark.com, and skimmed over a news story about the West Memphis 3 guys that are in jail for listening to metallica and wearing black (you know those dudes), well, DNA tests have just proven that they had nothing to do with the murders but nothing has been said about them being released yet. I thought y'all would like to know. I can't wait for this new record!

That's great news! While I would normally say "Justice is finally done" that's really not the case yet, however.
Hopefully they'll be released and perhaps some sort of compensation will be given.. And perhaps they'll actually catch the real killer?

I hope nobody takes this too seriously, but comparing Matodon to Metallica on any musical level is like comparing kumquats to delicious granny smith apples!!!! I'm a retired chef so I know what I'm talking about....lol.....I like Mastodon a lot but come on.......it is cool that Metallica acknowledges Mastodon and had them play some shows with them. If they do a summer sanitarium show again, hope they are on the tour!!

Kirk Hammett: Yeah, it's our eleventh studio album, but it feels like our sixth. It's just a really spectacular range of songs. This time we're not afraid to refer to our past music in order to create future music. People will see that we've kind of embraced our old vocabulary again and are using that vocabulary to express new things. I'm super excited to make this album, finish it and release it — 'cause then we can go out and play it to the people. We might have stretched our cores a little too much in the last fifteen years, but we've always came back to what we originally are and have been. I think with this album we're definitely going a little more back into our roots.
